Do you have issues? This is my second desire and it has the same issue as the first, reception is dire, unless your stood under the transmitter all I seem to get is static, its a major pain as I still have to take my Sony Ericsson to work to listen to the radio.
I have better FM reception on my desire than some radios in my house. I found with most phone radios it requires the earphone cable to be more horizontal than vertical.

Hmm interesting, It not to bad when out in the open, but go inside and all reception goes.
mine is attrocious indoors and bearable outdoors. it seems to take a while to warm up as the reception is much better on the way back from a journey over the exact same route. the angle and position of my headphone cable does seem to make a massive difference which is annoying.
over all, reception is not a patch on my last SE phone ...
I found using different headphones work better. Using desktop headphones and having no issues at all.

I use Sennheiser in ear headphones and they work great with the radio.
using the same headset i use on my mp3 player that has a radio inbuilt, i get better reception on the mp3 player, to such a point i can listen to the radio on my mp3 player where my desire is just static.
though it's a phone not a radio the length of the earphones will make a difference to the reception.
""I don't know what conductor works best as an aerial (copper or steel), or what lengths suit what wavelengths. I would think that less shielding on the cable would give better signal strength. Normally more shielding is a good thing as it stops interference from nearby electronic devices, but in this instance less shielding will give you a better radio signal""

Hi, the fm radio's reception is far than smooth on the desire, especially with headphones other than the ones that came with it..
Are there ways to improve the signal? maybe even an fm amplifying headphones extension cord of some sort I could buy?

slightly better, but far from ideal..
I've also found reception to be very poor with stock headphones. I haven't tried the ones that came with it yet.
yep, I agree that reception is terrible! I've resorted to beebplayer for listening to BBC radio.
agreed, poor reception, depens on ear phones too, it was better on my big headphones, then my little in ear ones.
so.. no solution there?
Yes, I've found it very poor, too. The only improvement has come from using a set of earphones that has a very long cable.
Is there a way to use the EVO Radio app without having any headphones plugged in? I know thats what the evo uses to get signal, but is there a way to edit the app and trick it into thinking it has an antenna on? Because you should still be able to get signal considering the phone has metal and even the headphone jack connector is metal.
Any Ideas? (This would be a sweet hack)
Thanks,
Shawn
I don't think so. The reason the headphones work as an antenna it's because the fm chip uses the headphones as a loop antenna. The ground on the main board does not produce the same loop as headphones.

Alrighty. I did not know that...now I do. Thanks. (FYI I thanked you too lol)
It was just a thought.
For sure, it would be much more convenient. I remember an old rom I had when you turned on the fm app it would play static before it detected there were no headphones connected and then muted it.
Public Radio Live Stream app, from the Market, streams lots of radio stations that have web streaming. No headphone/antenna necessary, as you're streaming the program via 3G, 4G or WiFi.
I took an old pair of my headphones and cut off the connector with about 6 inches of wire remaining on it.
I plug that in and use the phone's speaker to listen. Works like a charm

I have done the same thing but without the extra wire. Maybe we have stronger FM locally.
I have spent 20 minutes searching this forum and cannot find my answer so....
Why is the fm radio so poor, all I get is static and music in the background. If the fm radio cannot be improved and this is the best it is why have it?
I went for a run last night and didn't realise I deleted my files as a reboot and tried the radio but its hopeless.
Is this the same for everyone?

Yup it's probably because fm's an old technology, and it require quite a bit of an atenna in order to gain proper signal, and the headset on the desire is apparently not enough of an antenna.
If you have a proper data-plan, i will suggest you tune-in radio from the market. It's got most local radio stations
I have 1gb of internet, thank you for the info.
If not ill strap an aerial to my head and hope the thunder does not start.
Surely they know the radio is awfull also can anyone fit those headphones in your ears? I know I can't.

It works quite well if you dont want to wear the headphones ^^ hold it in a direction and search for signal ... it works quite fine than ...
To the questions of the headphones ...
They aren't the best but fit quite good for me without the softskin over it.
Well I had issues with the factory earphones/headset, but it works fine with my Ultimate Ears earphones and AKG headphones.
i also found the FM radio a bit rubbish
I was sure it was 'better' (not perfect) on the HTC Touch HD (Blackstone)
will probably use internet radio and/or Music Beta from now on...
No offence but if you can get the HTC headphones in your ears then you must have massive ears!
Thanks for all the comments, I hope the sensation is better.

Use a cable extension to the headphones to increase antenna size. Radio is quite acceptable with my pillow speaker which has approx 2m of cable.
Even the sound is soo low... while in a bus or something its hard to hear it . hhh
Ive never researched them, and I was hoping to get some input.
My friends usually have issues with audio quality on theirs, I was hoping sometime could recommend a good quality, fair priced FM transmitter?
Is like 40$ enough for a decent one?

Your best bet is to find a no brand name car stereo with a aux port, I found one at a pawn shop for 23 bucks....wired it up in my work truck and more don't ever have the crap sound and reception...I did use a fm transmitter prior, they are all the same and in today's times they are trash.

I use my belkin fm transmitter, it dulls the sound a little.... but other then that is crisp and clear!

Jabra Cruiser works very well. Bluetooth and fm transmitter, works well for hands free calling over car stero and streams music from phone to car stereo. I have been having one for 2 1/2 years and it has worked flawlessly!
Most common FM transmitters only work to 20-30 ft, because of regulations more powerful ones are not particularly legal. But if you want something with a little more "kick" check out this one, there's a dial you turn on the main board to crank up the juice. I use it at work to sync 4 radios in our shop to the same input source, but be care full, at max power it will transmit about 1/2 mile. Audio quality is the same as any strong radio signal you normally get, in other words, quite good for what it is.

The best transmitters were from a company called Aerielle... And, of course, it now appears they're out of business. A long, long time ago (this was probably 7 years ago) Kensington had a transmitter for the iPod that used Aerielle. It was $80, but it was probably the only transmitter that didn't get horrible reviews. I had one, and it did work really well. Anyway, Best Buy used to sell some universal transmitters under their Dynex brand that also used Aerielle, and they worked great too. Every once in a while, I see some pop up on eBay. If you're lucky, you can get one for $5-8. The model number is DX-FMDC1. Most FM transmitters are garbage, but if you can find any of the Aerielle ones, I swear they blow the rest out of the water.
Maybe I should put this thread on accessories. But I'm not sure if it can be solved in the phone itself.
I'm looking for a simple headset which allows audio streaming, and can be used in one ear only.
My problem is that several headsets I tried don't have a range that extends from my left pant-pocket to my right ear. And even the range left pocket to left ear is problematic. And the problem isn't that I'm very tall!
The symptom is that the music breaks off for a few seconds, and then continues.
I tried the Platronics M25, and Jawbone ERA.
Is there anything one can adjust in the phone to extend the bluetooth range? I'm on the standard 4.1.2.
Or, which headsets have a good range?
Thanks!
Do you want music or talking? I mean, is must sound quality important?
Basically there are a ton of Bluetooth headsets for calls that work at good distances. From the sounds of it your Bluetooth is not functioning properly.
I use a Plantronics Voyager Pro+ and it work pretty much anywhere in my house.
Shame it doesn't have an external speaker or vibrate function for incoming calls!

This is mainly for listening to podcasts. So sound quality isn't super important, but I need a2dp, or some such.
Could it have to do with the fact that I'm biking? Could it somehow be that the phone is at a strange angle, or moving, which makes the bluetooth reception worse?
No, I just did an experiment with my M25, both on the Note 2 and on an Xperia ray:
phone on the couch, I walk away ~3 meters, and music reception drops.
Maybe I should try the PRO+. But I'd like something smaller....
