[Q] Audio only over HDMI - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have my micro HDMI going into my home theater receiver and it works ok for video out of the Evo to the TV, but I'd really like to avoid adding another cable to go to the 3.5mm jack for playing MP3's or Pandora. Does anyone know of an app that will allow you to play purely audio over the HDMI out. As an aside, if I play MP3's while watching a movie, I can hear both...not quite what I'm going for but interesting none the less.

I think this is a great question... if we could figure out how to do that, we could make some very nice car docks that would only need the hdmi connector on the bottom for audio, instead of having to plug in the audio at the top after sliding it into place.

How about a App that shows visualizations for the video part while playing the music?

I was actually looking to do audio only on hdmi as well. Tried a couple different things, but like you could not get anything to work. Though I didnt try playing mp3's and a movie at the same time, I might have to just try that to see what happens, lol.

Music & BT Car Stereo

I purchased a JV KD-R730BT which uses BT to stream audio. It is pretty awesome. The only issue is that the player does not stream the actual MP3 Tag info with certain music apps. I have been using Power Amp which is awesome but nothing on the player. When I use the default music app built into android it does. Anyone else with any experience in this or suggestions?
And what are some other good music apps I might be able to try?
Thanks.

I'm using an Alpine 133BT, which I bought recently and LOVE being able to stream music wirelessly. I've also noticed that not all music apps transmit the ID3 MP3 tag.. I noticed that after updating to ICS, the Google Music app (which I prefer) will send the tag info to the headset. The only issue I have (and might be related to my deck) is that I have to toggle the songname/artist on the deck for each song, the tag info doesn't get updated every time I switch songs. I have to toggle the info off and then on to refresh it on the head unit.. frustrating.
I want to be like you guys when I grow up.
i use a JVC double din BT unit and mine does not transfer any tags to the player either, But Im not sure if its dependant on the phone or the actual head unit

I just ordered one of these from Crutchfield. It's supposed to be in Thursday. Mind if I ask if every connects quickly and properly? Have you tried using the JVC app to control the music?
I have a Kenwood bluetooth unit and it always displays info for songs no matter what app I stream with. Connects very fast and call quality is excellent.

for my exact same setup in my car, when i had my epic 4g no info was transferred from any app, also text message reading wasn't supported so i think the phone has a big role since now with the Epic 4G touch the stock player shows song info.

what apps have you tried? Also can you take a picture of it for us?
Only the stock player transmits song info for me as well. I have tried grooveshark, tune in radio, slacker, mortplayer, miui player, pandora and slacker.

Sorry for the late response.. i totally forgot about my thread here.. (moving around)
For the most part it connects fine. Sometimes it can be quirky but overall it is good. The Voice Talk app automatically opens and when you say the wake up command you can launch the default 'Music' player.
The JVC app to me is garbage. Just use the Voice Talk... set it to listen for the voice prompt on BT connect and you will be fine.

Better Audio Output?

So - I am highly invested in Google music due to the convenience, and I just put a high quality audio system in my 2007 Acura MDX.
I really can't stand apple but, their ipod integration is just everywhere - and I hate it. When I hear music from an ipod I know its a digital connection & it sounds fantastic - just like a cd - its digital direct audio.
Unfortunately, when you stream audio through your headphone jack - its an analog system and so your audio quality is greatly degraded.
Is there ANYTHING at all out there that I can use to get the google music from my Phone to my car system to sound like an ipod?

Why are you so invested in Google Music? Google Music is your first culprit. Have you considered Neutron player? It offers streaming audio and processes the audio at 32/64 bits. It sounds like a blanket have been lifted from my speakers when comparing the sound to google music. It offers much more depth and clarity. If you don't like the UI of it, you can try Power Amp( its still an improvement of Google Music.) Also, You should also check out Ac!d Sound Mod. It really helps to clean up the signal and results in a more natural, less distorted sound. What format is your music in? I have completely retired from the MP3 world and switched to Flac. I don't know if you're familiar with the format, but its Lossless audio, so theres no audio degradation from the original recording. It takes up more space, so its recommended you get a 32 or 64GB Micro SD card, but the difference can be heard immediately. I honestly dont know how I ever listened to MP3 for so long. Even at 320Kbps theres a big difference.

Well, I would recommend a bluetooth capable stereo for your car. I have one in my car, and when my car starts up, Google music automatically starts playing. It displays Artist, Track, and Album info etc to the head unit in my car (which is great), and I can skip tracks from the stereo without even removing the phone from my pocket.
Once I arrive at my destination, the music is automatically paused. The quality is much better than what come out of the audio output on my phone...my Galaxy Nexus has a cheap DAC, so streaming over bluetooth bypasses the DAC and sends the digital stream to your car stereo's DAC instead....

Yea I just tried Neutron player and it is HIDEOUS. I'd really like to keep google music as my primary music player because of the lockscreen integration and the UI & widgets are gorgeous.
Right now I'm starting with the basics, Im downloading an album in FLAC right now, its actually not as bad as I thought, only about double the space. Google music album was about 150 mbs, FLAC was 350 mbs. I thought it was gonna be a gig or 2 & that was gonna be a problem.
Acid is just a kernel & more of an internal software mod right? I could still use google music and see the improvements right?

Acid Sound mod is more of an internal software mod. You can use it with any music player( you just have to be rooted) .Flash V5. Its just a zip file you can flash in TWRP or CWM. Have you tried Poweramp? It has a much better GUI,direct gain controls( gets rid of high level distortion), and a better sound overall. The 10-band EQ in it( compared to Googles 5 band) is also much more useful than google. It comes with themes, lock screens, and widgets that are all customizable. Let me know what you think of Flac.. You're right, the size isnt too bad and the gains are just amazing. Also, have you applied any EQ? I give my Low end a 4-5db boost at 31hz, 2db boost at 62hz, and 1-2db boost at 8k and 16k in my car, to get the best sound out of the kick and fill the mix.

I notice a HUGE improvement using Bluetooth audio over using the line-in on my stereo. But like I said, my phone has a cheap DAC so that is where my limitation lies...
I have not noticed any less punch over Bluetooth, but I do run a custom rom (AOKP) and I believe they have tweaked the Bluetooth audio AVRCPso that it streams at a higher quality than is default on Android.
At first I would load FLAC files onto my phone directly, but when I did a comparison to the 320 MP3s that Google converts to when you upload something to Google Music I could not tell a difference. When I did the comparison my car was turned off sitting in the driveway. Since I couldn't hear any differences in that quiet setting, I knew that i certainly would not be able to tell a difference while I was driving and there was noise pollution.
i LOVE LOVE LOVE bluetooth audio
For acid do I have to physically remove dsp manager with titanium?

Ive read great reviews about the FiiO E7, but they're almost 100.00 dollars. Im sure the gain is nice, but your battery will drain faster, because your powering an external unit with your phone battery.

This has been a nuisance for me ass well. I use Google Music because I have all my music using the cloud. Are you able to set up power amp to play music from there and not stored internally? I was looking into buying an aftermarket deck. Pioneer (deh 6500bt). btw

The 6500BT is a good buy. When setting it up, read the manual on how to adjust the slope and hz of the three bands. It make a huge difference compared to just Raising and lowering the decibels. Poweramp does not support cloud storage playback...yet. Its still in the works from what i gathered; However, Neutron player is capable of streaming audio file formats like RAM, ASX, PLS and M3U( but I dont believe the pertains to Cloud storage). If cloud playback is really a deal breaker for you, I would consider downloading the modified Acid Beats V2 or Ac!d sound mod V5. This way you can apply a system wide EQ. I've noticed the S3( as well as the other Galaxy Models) Tend to drop off from 50-20hz. So I would compensate there and boost everything above 14Khz 1-2 Db. Hopefully, we'll see cloud integration on poweramp and Neutron soon...until then you could always get an external USB hard drive, format it exfat and use up to 1TB space in your car. You will have to buy a power inverter though, and connect the Ac adapter to it, because USB OTG wont power that big of a drive and just mount it in your car( On my Xmas list)lol. After you get your stereo, you can connect to the USB connector on the front of the stereo and have a permanent 1TB drive( sounds like Heaven) lol

I've got a fiio e11 I just picked up yesterday and it sounds great but not CD quality, nowhere close.
I assume its because its an analog out with an amplifier. The e7 looks like it will do a digital out. Does the s3 support digital audio out?
Stink in iPod will work with digital audio out and the reviews say its really like CD quality.
Basically exactly what I'm looking for.
Now just to get the digital audio out, how can I?

Have you tried connecting your USB Cable into your stereo, using the USB port on your head unit. Essentially, it will be doing the samet hing as connecting an ipod via usb. Ive seen this done with the S2 and S3. Ill attach a link to the video.

I don't have a USB input but I guess I could get an adapter for my factory stereo. Haven't watched the video, but I like the sound of that, literally!! If I go USB direct in then in theorie, there is No degredation of audio quality because there is no analog out put or loss.
I can only imagine how good it would sound. Am I on the right track here?

The other advantage to this method is that you'd be charging all the while. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the USB method working between my S3 and new Kenwood BT HD radio unit. However, the Bluetooth function works great, and I can still charge through the USB port if desired.

HDMI adapter to TV?

Hey guys
For you that are using this on your tv, which adapters are you using?
How well does it play 1080p HD mkv files over hdmi to your tv? I'm not sure how the resolution would work for this to a 1080p TV.
You can get a Samsung wired hdmi converter on ebay for about $10. Or the allshare wireless dongle for about $40 or $50. Keep in mind if you root the Allcast dongle will no longer work.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda premium
Two times no...
I use a rooted P605 and my Allcast Share Dongle works despite the system status Custom which did not work on my N8000.
I did yet find no wired adapter which works with the P605, either partial, intermittend or no display. And the Samsung store showd no official adapter.
Erstellt mit meinem Note 10.1 2014 LTE
This is the one I had bought previously for my Note 2, which also works on the G Note 14 as well....

Maybe the LTE version works...mine didn't I had to return and exchange it. Even flashing back to stock would not work after I tripped the flash counter

I played 1080p game trailers and movie trailers using an HDMI connection. It plays whatever the source is. One thing to note though. Playing videos with any app other than the default video app does not fill the screen all the way. There will be borders on the sides and top/bottom. It's not horrendous but is noticeable. However if you play using the default video player this gets corrected somehow when being output to the tv.

Great! Just wondering, is there any lag at all when playing 1080p movies. I was watching some videos of the Nexus 10 doing it since its probably the most similar device to ours right now and the reviewer mentioned there is a bit of lag since it has to power the video on both screens. Unless there's a way to turn off the tablet and just let it use the TV as the screen.
Also does the default player support mkv? I don't have my note to test it out right now.
Just make sure to buy the 5 -> 11 pin MHL adapter if using a normal MHL adapter. Just like the Note 2, the standard 5 pin MHL adapter won't work.
Also, don't forget it has to be a powered MHL device.
I have to do the same thing for my GN2 on my Pioneer App Radio. Only I use an adapter.

For videos, you won't notice any lag since you're just watching the video. Not to mention, when using the stock video player app it detects that you're playing the video on a larger screen and shuts down the output on your tablet screen so it's only visible on your tv. For games though, you may perceive a little lag since you're actually controlling what happens on the screen.
I haven't tested playing mkv's on the stock video app on the tablet but I can confirm they play on my galaxy note II so they should work. The only thing is that the stock video app doesn't support all audio codecs so if your mkv file contains dts audio you'll probably run into issues as the stock app won't be able to decode.
Apps like Archos video player (along with the free codec pack) should work fine for playing everything.

The tablet screen stays on during hdmi out and if you turn off the screen it stops hdmi output. The reasoning is that when you turn the screen off you are turning off the digitizer, too. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to control the device during playback.

Fair enough. But if I want to have 2 hours of constant playback for a movie without having to pause or anything, is there any app that does turn off the screen while its playing other than the stock app? I don't want the same thing to be playing on 2 screens at once. The stock app was mentioned saying that it automatically does turn off the screen while playing back via HDMI, which is cool. Sadly it doesn't play the audio on some of my MKV files cause of the codec, but MX player does. I'm looking to replace my laptop with this if possible to connect to my TV to play movies, but it should hopefully work just as well as the laptop otherwise it isn't worth it. I wouldn't be connecting this to the TV for anything other than movies anyway.

There are a couple schools of thought. Unfortunately I do not know of any way to turn off the screen during playback. However, there are a couple of apps out there which turn off the backlight during HDMI playback. One of which I believe is called screen off which you can find on the Play Store. The other is called tasker which allows you to create a system trigger event task that will do X when Y happens. Some people have said they're able to have the backlight turn all the way down when HDMI out is detected.

The tablet screen stays on during hdmi out and if you turn off the screen it stops hdmi output. The reasoning is that when you turn the screen off you are turning off the digitizer, too. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to control the device during playback.

Sorry, it doesn't turn the scrim off but it dims the screen quite a bit to where it's hard to tell it's on and does not actually show the video that's being played. I should've been more clear.

No apology needed. There are a lot of new members on the forums and they can be easily confused. I just thought it appropriate to clarify.

No sound when playing prime movies

I have 2 major problems:
1. amazon prime movies have no sound, and sound works properly every where else.
2. I cannot download amazon apps from amazon fire TV home screen, it won't even let me click into them to see the price.
Looking for some help what it could be.
Notable tweaks:
I have a rooted device with nova launcher, xbmc, rboxs module google play store module. And various other apps.
Not knowing how you are hooked up, that is hard to speculate about. One thing though, some movies are encoded with Dolby Digital Plus and not all equipment can handle it. The AFTV also has an Optical Out so one can get Dolby Digital instead. I pitched my Roku3 I for this reason. I could not get surround from Netflix movies. Had to to opt for Stereo.
Here's more info, I don't think its the way I'm hooked up. I have aftv HDMI to TV then fiber optics to sound bar. Appears to be software or something. Any one else had this problem?

It's still a little hard to diagnose with that info. Could be the HDMI so you'd try a different cable (higher quality if possible)
I'm sure you've tried rebooting by now but sometimes that fixes lots of issues, in fact I've fixed some sound issues with a simple reboot. Other times I've unplugged it for a short period of time then plugged it back in.
The only other thing is lots of people have complained of netflix/prime video playback but I don't think the sound was the problem for any. The fix there, that I know of is go to amazon video in apps section, clear data 3 times, unplug 10 seconds then it works.
But I'm just hoping I might help. Based on the info I'm just taking a stab. Of course you might eliminate the sound bar or try a different tv if possible to rule out software like you suspect. Good luck.
Since you have Optical connected to your soundbar is Optical selected in AFTV Settings for sound output? Just asking.
No offense taken, thanks for your suggestion! I have ruled out the cables, I got the apps to work, it was a module that puts the amazon app store on that was causing other apps not being able to install.
So now its just the sound not working only while watch amazon prime videos, the sound works in every other app!
OK its all fixed you were right sound out put all it was. Went thru the trouble shooting tips here

DD+ is a nightmare for many with equipment a few years old. it is HDMI only and meant for 7.2. Kind of overkill for many. It is supposed to backward compatible to DD 5.1 but not in many instances. Had to ditch my Roku3 because of it but found the AFTV which is more fun anyway.

Take a look at the amazon tab. I found a crossed out speaker icon on it. right click to unmute and then turn up the sound. worked for me. Check out chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting

[Q] Crackling/Popping sound coming from my galaxy tab pro's speaker.HELP!

So i bought my wife a tablet for school. However we keep hearing this crackling sound/popping sound coming from the speaker when playing youtube videos, playing games such as jungle heat. It is really annoying because when we are watching videos we can hear the sound. If anyone could help us, I really appreciate it. This is the 3rd time we exchange this device but the result is still the same. I dont know if its just me. Thank You!
Can you post some music or a movie from youtube where you ARE sure you hear a lot of crackling? Just so we can check it out ourselves?
I have yet to experience this at all. It is weird if you have had that issue on 3 devices now. Do you have bass boosts or equalizer on?

Give me a youtube movie or clip of music. Not your recording mate. Just something original that makes it pop. A name of a song or a video. Doesn't matter. Do the people you talk about have the same tablet as you? Or random?

ok no problem
If it is a hardware issue then Samsung should repair it if it is within the year warranty. Best buy should cover it if it is pretty new as well.
Are you running stock System? Have you checked to make sure you are up to date? Install Kies3 on your computer and see if it finds any updates.

I don't hear any popping or crackling sounds from my tab pro 8.4 I have tested with its internal Speakers, The Headphone jack, and using a bluetooth headset / headphones.
Does it have this problem when you plugin headphones or is it only the speakers? if it does it on all audio outputs then its most likely some kind of interference happening first try the headphone jack which is analog like the speakers.., bluetooth is digital with a2dp so it probably won't happen on that (though this could also be a temporary solution to use bluetooth external speaker or headphones)-
If it is interference then you need to find the source and hope it is coming from your own house , best way to find interference is to either unplug everything you can find or go to the house circuit breaker box and switch off the main switch this will turn off all electric in your house then use the tablet and play back a video /audio you have saved to the internal memory and see if it still happens.
Many people have this problem (including me). Any time the app you are using has something that emits sounds (even if you have muted your sound), you can hear crackling based on how heavy the CPU is working. It is most likely interference coming from the CPU. Not much anyone can do about it, except for Samsung. It would probably need a rework of the components though, that's why a simple replacement of the speakers will most likely not work. As soon as you put something in your 3.5mm jack though, the crackling should stop. (Most likely because the speakers get turned off physically instead of just being digitally muted) So really, the best we can hope for is we can find someone who may be able to create an app that emulates the headphone jack being used whenever the sound is muted. At least the crackling stops when the sound is muted then.
