[Q] Wiping question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do I have to wipe data and cache if I'm just flashing a new version of a kernel over an old one?

From what I understand, you can probably skip wiping data/cache when flashing just a kernel or radio. Wiping data/cache is primarily used for major changes with the ROMs being flashed.

When flashing kernels I wipe cache and dalvik cache. I only do a data wipe if I'm flashing a brand new rom.

quickie: Still wiping caches for kernels?

Ive since seen both sides of the fence on this one.. but are people still wiping caches ( dalvik etc ) when installing new kernels? Or is that one of those old practices?
Still doing a wipe of cache and dalvik cache when updating kernel. Its the best practice.
I would strongly suggest wiping cache and dalvik before flashing your new kernel, or anything else for that matter. I've been wiping, flashing, wiping again before rebooting, letting the phone sit idle for 10 minutes after first reboot, and then reboot again. Use as you would normally from there. Just how i do it. So far so good.

CM nightlies

Do I need to reflash gapps when updating to the new nightlies? And should I be wiping either of the caches for best results?
Edit: nvm, flashed the new one and wiped dalvik after. Everything working beautifully.

Going from a nightly to a newer nightly of the same version (i.e. a CM10.1 nightly to a newer CM10.1 nightly), you should not need to wipe your system partition, but it never hurts if you are not in a hurry. You may want to wipe cache and Dalvik cache, as it may help to optimize the new versions of apps.
You would need to wipe your system partition when changing ROM (i.e. CM10 to stock) or changing from one version of a ROM to another version of the same ROM (i.e. CM10 to CM10.1).
Wiping cache and Dalvik cache do not uninstall apps -- so no, if you only wipe cache and Dalvik cache, you would not need to reinstall Google Apps.
But wiping system will format your system partition, deleting all system apps and user apps. This means that once you have reflashed a new ROM, if you had formated your system partition, you will need to reflash Gapps also. And reinstall all your other apps.

[SOLVED] Before installing ROM

Hi All,
So I've just unlocked my bootloader, flashed .79 firmware and flashed DooMKernel v14
My question is what do i need to do before installing the ROM from my SD card
Format the phone "Factory Reset"?
Wipe dalvik cache?
Wipe cache partition?
Also if I'm wanting to try another ROM do I need to do any of the above before installing a different one?
Thanks

Yes wipe data(factory reset), then wipe dalvik cache and cache. You need to do this when switching ROMs. If its an update of same ROM and OP say there is no need for wipes then dont, otherwise always wipe.

Re: Before installing ROM
Dalvik is contained in /data if I remember. I thought it was system, data, and cache that you had to wipe.

Yep I agree
I do the following:
(1) Wipe cache/data/advanced dalvik cache
(2) Mounts&Storage format cache/data/system
(3) Install rom.
Maybe you do not need to do all that but I do and don't get any bootloops

[Q] Clean install before installing a rom?

I tend to have troubles with roms when i flash them by how the instruction says. For example I only do a factory data reset for cm10.2 then install. I have problems with it after 6 hours, people say it's smooth and amazing so how do I do a clean install?
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partitions
Wipe dalvik cache
Format system
After that install rom.
