[Q] Car Charger makes SD card unavailable - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hopefully someone can help... When I plug my Evo into my (off brand) car charger, it makes the SD Card unavailable (like it was plugged into a PC). At first, I thought it might be the charger, but my wife's EVO works fine. Any ideas???
Here are the things I have tried...
- Restarted the phone
- Moved all apps back from SD card to phone memory
- Disabled USB debugging
- Restarted phone again

Update...
When I unmount my SD card, plug in the charger, and then re-mount the card, it works. Pain in the rump though... and in case anyone was wondering, no my phone is not rooted or modified in any way. My wife's EVO works fine with the same charger.
Anyone have any ideas??? I would really like to be able to access my music while the charger is plugged in without having to unmount/re-mount.

Go into settings and change the default USB Connection action from USB Mass Storage to Charging. You must've changed that a while ago and forgotten about it.

Are you using DoubleTwist? It has a feature that automatically mounts the SD card to be used from a PC over the USB cable. For some reason it thinks a car charger is a PC.
This probably holds true for other programs that can auto mount SD to USB.

Already thought of that... That wasn't it. Thanks for the help though.

DoubleTwist was it! I went into the settings and disabled that option. Thank you! This is why I love forums!

THANK YOU!
The same issue was driving me nuts.
DoubleTwist is great; but the xda forum is even better ...

[Q] Force automount of SD ONLY???

I tried on incredible forum and got someone asking if I've tried the obvious. PPCgeeks hasn't had any replies yet, and google searches only return me to my own threads! So....I'm trying my luck with you guys.
I've got an incredible, and was running the stock 2.1, rooted, and I had the phone set to automount the storage as a disk drive whenever connected to USB. Due to a bug in 2.1, whenever you set it up to mount automatically like this, ONLY the SD card was seen as a drive, and the phone storage portion was not available. You could make them both available, but not automatically.
This was PERFECT for me, because I have a car stereo that accepts USB disk drives, and all my music was on the SD card. The one limitation of the stereo is that it only reads the first available partition. Nothing I can do to change it. So, with that setup, it mounted only the SD, the stereo saw only the SD, and I was in music heaven.
So I got virtuous 3.01 loaded on there, and I love froyo.....except....they fixed the mounting bug, and now the phone properly presents BOTH the SD card and "phone storage" when it's plugged into USB. And of course, phone storage is the first presented partition. End result is my car stereo now CANNOT see ANY music stored on the phone. Worse yet, since it takes the phone some time to do this, the stereo doesn't always recognize that a usb drive is even plugged in, where the timing was absolutely perfect before and it picked it up every time.
This seems like it should be extremely simple, like there should be some setting in the phone to mount only one single partition when plugged into a usb port. But for some reason, after days of searching, I can't find this anywhere - everyone always has the opposite problem and wants to make it mount everything.
Can someone please point me in the direction of a setting (most preferable - since I know it worked under 2.1, I know the phone must be capable of this at the OS layer), an app, or SOMETHING, that just straight up automounts ONLY the SD card when plugged into USB?
Under 2.1, with the "bug", it worked FLAWLESSLY. Every time I got into the car, plugged it in, and bang, music. I don't wanna give up froyo because of this, but it's pretty frustrating. I hope maybe someone can show me what I've missed!

Charge Only = Disk Drive ???

I have a weird problem, When I plug my phone into charge, be it via PC or even the wall connection, it acts like "disk drive" mode is set, even though charge only is set.
If I reset it to charge only it then says "preparing SD Card" and is fine again.
I know of one other person with the same problem, any fixes?
I have this problem when i use my HTC cable but nt while i use my Dodgy cable from hong kong,
work around : Change the mode to HTC Sync from Charge only and it charges perfectly fine...
You can reselect charge only mode and it works fine, just dont understand why it acts like a disk drive in the first place
quite wierd i agree, the hong kong cable working, makes me think its the cable, but why could a cable change it to disk drive mode automatically(i have seen my htc cable change it to car mode automatically, which is understandable)
Do you have any apps such as Double twist, winamp etc? These apps have an auto mount sd function that you need to disable. Then magically it will no longer do this.
Check your apps people.

same here!!! it's since i permarooted with visionary_r12 and flashed hboot as well as an oc'd zimage and the adb-boot.img (before kernel)!
the strange thing is: even after a wipe and a clean flash of a stock rom i now have this problem...
must have something to to either with visionary, hboot or boot.img i think!
EDIT: shame on me, and big thx to ephumuris! indeed winamp was the cause... the strange thing is: i installed winamp about two weeks or so, and the automount started when i flashed hboot etc. ok, perhaps it has something to do with root rights etc.: winamp automount was active since i installed it, but started working after permaroot! anyway, big thx again!

E4GT and a usb car stereo... help plz

Hey guys... just picked up my E4GT and I have a USB car stereo. The stereo currently gives me a "device error" when I plug the phone in because the phone is not in "storage" mode.
My question is... how can I have the phone default to "usb storage" mode when I plug it into something, so that the stereo can find music on it?
Thanks.
u can either pull down the notifi ation bar and press the mount usb button or u can go to the market and grab an app called multi mount sd-card and it will auto mount it for u every time u plug it back in to the stereo.

Thanks for the tip. For some reason, though, when I plug it into the stereo it doesn't let me change to mass storage by pulling down the notification screen. I tried changing settings, but it didn't have any effect.
I tried multi-mount free version and it didn't seem to do anything at all. I'm kind of skeptical about picking up the paid version since the free version didn't work at all.
been gone for a while. did u ever get that fixed? because i fugured out extra info tonight actually. ive got 2 cables that fit this phone, one will let me switch to mass storage on my radio and one wont. also the best place to have your music is not in what i thought was my sdcard but move your music folder to sdcard/external_sd/ and your head unit will read it way way faster. as for those cables i seem to think some usb cables are charge, data, or charge/data only. just my thought though. hope u get straightened out.
the automount widget by JRT studios, in the market works perfect imo (NOT DUAL USB MOUNT)

[Q] Conect a 1 Terabyte hard drive through OTG cable.

I'm having problems getting my terabyte hard drive connected to my phone with my home made otg cable.
It works just fine with my 2 gig sandisk flash drive, and my USB mouse. So I know it's not the cable.
I'm on Ravers blackedition Rc6 ICS. Just wondering if there's a workaround.
Oh, and I can't get my x-box controller to regester with my emulators, is there an app for that.
Sent from my very own Galaxy.
You need more power to power that external drive. Flash drives do not require that much juice.
Sorry I had to retype the post a few times due to my connection timing out and left some key stuff out.
The terabyte drive is self powered with an AC plug.
When I plug it in it gets as far as telling me that its connected, then reboots my home screen. I go to access the drive and it says its empty.
I can hear the drive working so I guess its scanning media.
If I leave it plugged in it will freeze the phone. And I have to pull the battery or hold the power button. Then I can't access cell or SD card functions. But a few reboots brings it back.

Probably formatted ntfs and the kernel is lacking proper support.
i have the same issue with my 1TB external harddrive. it also has the ac plugged into the wall then i hooked it up to my phone and it showed this...
also mine is formatted to NTFS.
it is probably only reading a fat partition on the external, as mentioned above if the drive is NTFS formatted, your phone probably wont read it.
This is irrelevant but I really don't see the need or the practicality of plugging in a massive (both storage and physical size) hard drive to a handheld device.

All of my music and movies are on the hard drive. its easier to copy the files from drive to the phone, instead of mounting both to the computer and copying that way.

Ok I see, why not get a 64GB SD instead then? Save the trouble of having to plug in your phone to the hard drive all the time.

MicroSD/USB-C Adapter - Without Root?

Hi guys,
my Micro SD/USB-C adapter has arrived and I was planning on testing it through the Gear VR. Sadly though, even just plugging it directly in to the phone jumps the phone to Charging mode! I've found a number of apps that will turn it back to MTP access but they all require ROOT access. I'm not prepared to root my phone as a number of my banking apps disable themselves if they detect this. (And i'll also be returning my phone to Samsung in a week or two for a less "explody" version)
Any ideas on how to get the port to default to MTP without rooting?
Thanks!
I am sorry, what the heck are you talking about?

THIS!
When I plug it in, Android says "Charging" even though it's clearly NOT a charger and is supply NO current. I want to be able to browse the files on the MicroSD card.
I plugged my micro-usb micro-SDHC OTG adapter into the micro-usb to USB-C adapter and then plugged it in. It doesn't do anything. It worked just fine on S6 Edge. But Note 7 - nothing.
Does Note 7 even support USB-OTG?

Now, I got it to work. Check this out.
I plugged in Micro-SDHC to Micro-USB OTG adapter with the memory card into a Micro-USB to USB-A adapater which came with the card adapter (it's OTG compatible.) Then plugged in this monstrosity into the Samsung USB-A to USB-C adapter which came with the phone. This adapter is apparently also OTG compatible. Then I plugged it into the phone and it worked!
It appears that the tiny adapter that came with the phone, the Micro-USB to USB-C adapter is not OTG compatible.
Now, here's how to make it work. When you plug it in and it lights up, swipe down to open notification panel and click on USB charging notification. From there you should be able to change it from charging to MTP. The sd card will be under /storage/[name] where [name] is the name of the card.

That's the part that doesn't work for me. I select MTP and it immediately jumps back to Charging without any interaction from me. In addition, once I plug it in to a Gear VR I won't be able to swipe to change the setting so, I need to force the default (I use wireless charging anyway) to be MTP.

It works in that YT video and it just worked for me. Something is broken with either your phone or this adapter. Or maybe your sd card isn't formatted properly?

There are differences. You and the video have gone through one or more adapters, mine is a straight MicroSD card reader with a USB C connector. I'm wondering if there is something special that the reader has to do to be OTG?
edit: In addition, as I said, how do you "swipe" the notification when it's plugged in to the Gear VR? Even with an OTG adapter, I still need to be able to set the default to MTP.
edit 2:
THIS is the exact item i purchased.
