Instructions how to change boot animation is in the sticky on top named:
"[TUT]Complete upgrading guide(root, unroot, flashing ROM & updates)"
Did a search for "change boot animation" and it listed the thread just fine.
The Simply brilliant boot anim is in the post before mine.
EDIT:
Even easier:

Do I need to create the folder 'local' within data as it's currently blank (no folders or files)
Will it then load the file automatically as it's a .zip or do I need to flash it?

Did you bother to search Development?
Do you mean the boot.img that contains the kernel or the splash that has the picture when you first turn on your phone.
I suspect that you mean splash.img- there are several threads about how to mod the splash.

Yeah the image/video i see when i power-up the phone , i want to make one personal. I do not think the HTC LOGO in power-up , but on the loading image/video
You can change both- the first pict is the splash.img while the image/video is the bootanimation. There are several threads for both. I think the bootanimations will be in the themes and apps forum.
Good luck!
I've replaced my stock boot anim with some custom boot anim. I found a few flashable zip files that have some great looking boot animations (can't remember where of course). So I boot into CWM and flash the zip files, it says that zip file flashing took "hold" reboot the device, it's still the same boot anim as before.
So then I extracted the flashable zip and found the bootanimation.zip file and overwrote the bootanimation.zip file in /System/Media.
Rebooted the device and STILL the same boot animation as before. I can't get rid of this thing! LOL
Any ideas?

You probably have one in /data/local which is preferred over /system/media if it exists.
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434950
Edit: wrong sub-forum btw...
Data/Local

Yeah same thing happened for me, once I copied any new boot animation zip to data/local it works fine.
I know it's the wrong sub-forum but this thread went unanswered for a few days in the "Q&A" section. So I knew it would get a response here
Thanks!
So, if I delete the one in \Data\Local the one in \System\Media will take preference?

Why don't just go to Market, search for 'boot animation', and download an app! You can select zip then. So easy!
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e using XDA App
My issue was no matter what boot animation either flashing it or placing it into System/Media .. the same boot animation would remain...

Install my script linked above, what happens?
I didn't install the script. Initially I just copied the bootanim.zip out of the data/local to system/media and the "new" boot animation took hold. Then deleted it out of /data/local and everything worked. Just like you suggested!
I took a look at your script but I am scared. LoL!
I will have to read / pay attention to the instructions when I've got more time. Because the idea of rotating random boot animations sounds cool

Hi,I was wondering if I can change the boot animation in 4.2.1
I'm using PA 2.99.8,it came with the "X" stock boot animation so I wonder if there will be a problem if the animation is changed.
Thanks

you can only try it out after backing up
some roms allow you to change the logo
so just try it and see what will happen
No offence but your comment was, well, kind of useless.
Anyhow, I'm going to take your advice and give it a try.

are the boot animations still in the /system/media folder? I keep on putting my bootanimation.zip file there (with the correct permissions) but the boot doesn't stick.

/data/local directory is searched first for a bootanimation.zip file . If it is not there, /system/media is searched
I am using Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300 JB 4.1.2 stock ROM but rooted. I wanted to change my boot animation and tried copying "bootanimation, zip" to "system/media" but does not work, not a single one of them. I think the problem is, my phone is using a .qmg file as boot animation named "bootsamsung.qmg" and "bootsamsungloop.qmg", that is why "bootanimation.zip" is not working. I thought of deleting both file and try but I am afraid that my phone would not start at all. So please can any expert here help me out with the boot animation problem. I am a newbie and really wanted to change it. Thank you in advance...
There is a patch for that from anbech...

Once patched you can use the zip format.
I posted some bootanimations over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911963&highlight=bootanimation
cheers

DELETING THE FILES WILL ONLY DELETE THE CURRENT BOOTANIMATION. try extracting the zip file and then moving the two files to system / media.make sure to mount system rw, then change permissions to rw-r--r-- change ownership to 0-root then execute the script for each of the new qmg files .reboot. good luck.

You need to read the boot animation zip instructions its simple if you do but difficult otherwise . Essence is boot animation.zip requires slight system file modification on many roms . jje

Hey I've had my fire phone for a while now and I just recently rooted it and I accidentally changed my boot animation before getting a save of the original so does anyone know where I can get that original boot animation from?
Stock boot animation: original ZIP file download @ zippyshare.com
Thanks for trying
Thanks for trying but I was looking for the fire phone boot animation which just says fire
This is the boot animation from the factory image, there is no other variant, afaik... All images (US, UK, DE) use the same boot animation.

Can't speak for "bhoot" but the ZIP is a standard zip file used for android boot animations, that's why it's not flashable. You can find guides here on XDA about creating and switching boot animations.
