[Q] 2.2 Froyo - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm with Virgin Mobile and I own a HTC Desire. I'm sick of waiting for the 2.2 Froyo Update. Anyone got any inside info on when they are going to roll it out? Also I like the idea of Rooting my phone to escape Virgins' hold over me, but am terrified of Bricking it. Is there a link to an 'Idiots Guide' of how to do it, or do I have to jump back and forth between posts and cut and paste my own guide? Thanx for listening, Rob.

Hi, If you just need the Froyo update, you do not need to 'ROOT'! There is a wealth of information on how to go about it. If you have not already found out what to do, check out the various relevant posts. unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE as to your requirements, it is worth your reading a few comments to know the consequences of the various procedures.
To start you off, this is one of the most straightforward manual Froyo update prceedures i've come across. I'm not yet able to post live links here so just cut and paste, or navigate to: 'androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available'.
It includes simple instructions. You'll need to create a "gold card" to perform the procedure.
I hope this helps.
Please post your progress just to let the forum know how you got on

Or you could just root and flash one of the many Froyo roms on here and be happy! Takes 15 mins to sort out with Unrevoked 3.

Thanks 842m8s, I'll get straight on it and let you know as soon as. I rooted my Desire today before I read your reply and tried to flash a custom ROM. The rooting worked fine but after flashing ROM the phone just kept re-booting. Minor panic until Nandroid saved me with recovery image. Phew. I'll go slow now. Will try your method tomorrow. Thanks again. Rob

Hi SBdags, I tried Unrevoked 3 and it just kept rebooting. 3 times I tried. Had to re-root and use nandroid image to recover. Followed these instructions to the letter. Hemorrdroids.net/one-click-root-thanks-to-unrevoked. Will try again if I can't find more simple method. Thanks, Rob.

Help i'm rubbish at this
Hello again, I just made a gold card with a 1 gig SanDisc. When I put it in the Desire it said it was damaged. Is this normal? I doubt it somehow. I formatted it to fat 32 with Windows and it seemed fine then. Bloody Phones, I love em. Should I have formatted the card inside my Desire instead of with windows? I tried to reformat and start again but Windows said the card is now 'Read Only'.

Hi, Everything now sorted. Gold Card worked. Flashed 2.2 Froyo successfully. Can't thank you all enough. Excellent site and members, I think I'll leave well alone for now. One question though. Will I still get updates from Virgin, or will I have to revisit XDA when next update occurs? All the best, Rob.

I'm pleased you got sorted, well done!
With regards to Froyo, as you are now sporting stock HTC Bravo Froyo firmware, your 'de-branded' phone can now only get OTA upates from HTC same as any un-branded Desire, and for now, to install these, I believe you will still need the gold card you created for future Froyo firmware update installations.
Maybe someone else can confirm that.

Hi again, I should add that my comment in my prevoius post to you is based on the assumption that you flashed with Stock HTC Bravo Froyo ROM and are un-rooted. If you rooted, and you install stock, you will lose root. To retain root, you'll need to follow whatever process your ROM release source dictates. Rooting is not something I claim to have a lot of experience on so again, maybe someone else can elaborate on this. There is a wealth of info on rooting related issues at this site, so just browse!

Froyo update
Hello, my sugestion is to do nothing and wait for the provider's update. Froyo is faster but has still bugs like filming in 720p (HD) is stuttering!!! Just sucks!!
So I have also a question, who shares with me the same experiance.
Watching tv programmes is still smaller than my HD2, witch I had..[/U]

help to de brand orange desire

hi i am looking for some help with debranding and updating my desire from orange crap ware to froyo i ask for help as i have killed 3 phones already and dont want to do another one "it's becoming a standing joke round my place" i cant seem to find anyone to unlock it tried 4 different people with code not found to new i suppose.orange wont do it fir 3 months any help would be appreciated i dont mind paying someone say 10-15 pound to do it if there in my area colchester if its all fine and working after thanks in advance
i did get the first one done but then the radio messed up usual orange mess up
I take it by saying you need to unlock them you flashed the WWE with the radio? To fix it all you have to do is take the SIM out, boot the phone and do the OTA update to Froyo which will flash a radio compatible with Orange.
i see there is a htc froyo image available now will this work 100% with orange phones "why do they have to be such a pain" i still nervous about doing it i think orange might get funny if i keep sending them back

Nobody has reported issue with it on Orange—it updates the radio to the correct bands.
yep should work fine
I updated my own 'graphite' Orange phone and a friends 'black' Orange phone.
We're both very happy and flawless
I too had a spangly new Desire on Orange and was dead nervous about rooting it but it was a real straight forward process in the end. Now,with fake flash, I put the Roms I like on my memory card and just flash them whenever I fancy a change. It seems quite daunting but in truth it really is nothing to worry about. Take it from a very nervous first time rooter
pm me if you want a step by step guide or any links.
Thanks for the reply I went and done it to official froyo .ruu last night not worried about rooting just wanted rid of Orange crapware and froyo. All went well apart from use going to sleep had to unplug phone and plugvit back in to get it to work strange but did it all ok

It's very simple use unrevoked to root your desire and flash one of the many custom roms. Or if you want to debrand make a gold card then use one of the RUUs found on the forum.
tried and failed, could get either processes to work and followed the instructions to a T, has orange just locked these phones down completely
No they haven't I have rooted and unrooted my phone many times.

So what are the steps to flashing my HTC Desire on Orange UK?
1. Make a Goldcard?
2. Flash the RUU?
3. Root the phone?
4. Flash the ROM?
Would that update the radio and put a custom rom on it?
Thanks for any help for a noob!
Goldcard and then Ruu
You are not obliged to root it, this 2 thinks are very différents.

[Q] Go back to Stock???

Hi there
Im asking if somebody can tell me how to get back to stock. I've rooted my phone using unrevoked and have clockwork installed, I've been playing around with custom ROMs and Ive had fun but I want to go back to stock.

Hi,
may I ask you why you decided to go back to stock? Unhappy with modded roms or simply bored with them? Was it worth it? I am considering playing a little too, but I can't say that I'm not happy the way it is!
Thanks & ciao
Luca
I had alot of fun, and the ROMs that the devs here have worked on are utterly fantastic without question. especially LeeDroid and Pays Rom. Both very good, but really it's A2SD that I can't be dealing with. Other than that Id like to be able to update the GApps. I guess the more things change you want them back to normal

Thanks however I don't really see much that answers my question, I want to go back to stock completely, no clockwork and no root.
Can I do this by plugging in my Goldcard and running an official RUU on my PC?
Yes, and the link is in there as I said.
Thanks for you reply toyface!
However, what do you mean by GApps? Google Apps?
I'm sure I'll root my phone, but 1st I want to have the way back safe in some folders on my pc. I know it should not be too difficult to find the stock rom (plus my phone is unbranded, so no need for goldcard or anything), but, so far, I haven't been able to understand which one is the right one for my phone among the many that one can find on this website.
I guess I need to post this question too!
Thanks again TF
Luca
You're right the link is in there, sorry, it's been a long day, great FAQ btw thank you very much!
Yeah, the google apps as in GMail and the rest of the family. I really like the custom ROMs that the devs here have cooked up, I feel the best is LeeDroid, but if you were going for your first go around ROM wise I'd wait a little bit, there working on getting the Desire HD ROM ported properly, and when that happens, the ROMs will be even better!
Thanks for the advice TF!
I'll pretend I understood exactly what you mean by porting the Desire HD ROM!
However, one other thing that keeps me from rooting now is that I may want to upgrade to the HD and so willl need to get back to stock in order to trade in my phone to the dealer.
Furthermore, I hope we'll see Gingerbread soon and that may be the time to root and flash a cooked rom with android 3 since, as usual, HTC will get there much later than google release it.
One last question, if you can spare some more time: One of the feature I'm after, as stupid as this may sound, is waking up the phone using the trackball. Is it true that this a feature available right after rooting even without flashing any rom. It sound strange to me but I read it somewhere here and nobody denied it, so I guess it could be true.
Ciao TF and good night
Luca

How to go back to stock ROM?

Hi all,
Strangely, I failed to find the answer of, what otherwise seems like, a simple question. I am running a custom Rom right now on my DHD, and I want to go back to stock Rom because I am selling this phone. Can someone point me to a guide, maybe already written by someone.

Did you make a goldcard before rooting? if not, this could be the issue.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
yes, i did create a Goldcard when i first did it a long time ago.. Tried FULLWIPE.ZIP as well.
at this stage im going to have to send it back to VF with Android revolution on it..
kiwiboy1978,
Check this guide / links to guides for your very problem;
The Complete Guide 2 Return Rooted Phone Back 2 Stock for Vodafone Australia Warranty
The procedure should be the similar for othe carriers, although you might have to obtain the HBOOT & Recovery image from elsewhere.
Can you explain about the goldcard question. If I DIDNT use a goldcard would it cause this? I didnt think that I could root the mobile in the first place without the goldcard.
Its just weird as every other ROM installs without a hitch. Just the stock Vodafone ROM is doing this. And of course its the one I really need back on there!
aargh!!
**clarification, i did use a goldcard as far as i remember*
I never had to use a gc, as not carrier branded. Reading on xda, others have had issues trying to downgrade to stock without the gc. Without it they were getting cid mismatch or such when trying to flash.
Even if you have cid 11111111 now, it is still possible to check what your cid was before. Maybe this is part of the "check" it does when trying to flash back and giving cid errors/mismatch.
Check original in ADB, command prompt;
adb shell getprop ro.cid
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
ok, checked my CID and its VODAP021.. does this sound right?
shouldnt it be as you suggest 111111111?
If you did it in adb, that confirms that your phone was definitely carrier branded and you need s gc.
If you go to fastboot, system info, if your phone is s-off, cid will show 11111111.
I'm away atm, and can't really to any digging for you, sorry. There are a few threads going around on the topic, incl the one I gave you previously.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
ok. remade a goldcard got the stock ROM on it, same issue.
under system info it says S-OFF but the CID is still VODAP021. do I need to root this phone again using Visionary?
Deleted, been a long day.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Hi, just wanted to thank you anyway.
Those guides didnt work in my case. What I ended up doing was re-rooting the phone. Making a backup of the Android-revolution HD rom through ROM Manager, then replacing the contents of the backup folder with the contents of the Vodafone ROM.
This worked.
Cheers.
Good to hear.

So folks here .. does that mean GB upgrade should be done only once i have taken sufficient reviews and made up mind for the same.
Guys is the upgrade not worth it!!! i heard the memory available will reduce to something like 128mb but i heard there are better abilities to move applications to SD card.
Is it true??? is any once facing serious disappointments after the upgarde?
I am kinda waiting for responses !

Why don't you install a pre rooted version? Then your hboot won't be upgraded and you can return to froyo if necessary.

Well i m looking at installing the Stock GB via RUU from HTC.. which now i dont think will be favourable for me after the responses !
I had contacted the HTC Support to ask the query regarding the downgrade possibility. The support guy has informed that this HTC Stock GB upgarde is some sorta special upgrade and hence it seems they will rollback my device incase i m not happy ..
" We informed you that after upgrading your HTC Desire to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, if you wish to again move for Android 2.2 Froyo you may visit our service center and get your device downgraded to Android 2.2 Froyo. "

Since i m a newbie i have a doubt, does that mean there is no hboot upgarde happening ..
Looking forward to further thots from all the geniuses here !!
No there is an hboot upgrade, I think it just means only they can downgrade it for you which is why you have to take it to their service centre.

i was thinking of doing this too, what is wrong with it,why do people not like it,2.3 has a force to SD card function so memory shouldnt be a problem,a review would be great so i can make a decision, does it affect your SMS and MMS like they said it might? and if this does stuff up then how else could i get it rolled back as i live in australia and have no idea where a service center is,i would have to go to my Telstra store to have it sent in which case im not sure if it is covered by warranty?
Service centre for sydney is fonebiz rokdale
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
At the moment there is no way to have it rolled back, it'll change your boot animation so telstra will most likely notice that you don't have their official rom on it therefore voiding your warranty. I think the main reason people don't like it is that once its installed you can no longer root your phone so you're stuck with it. Also, I'm not sure how great the stock force to sd feature would be.
Sent from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
i thought my warranty goes through HTC? at least thats what i was told? if its a ROM by HTC why would it void their own warranty? well is it that bad that ppl want to go back to froyo? or is it coz they just want to complain or what? what is the actual difference that makes it a poor upgrade, and how come u dont think the force SD would be good?
Not so great, better to flash custom rom.

New Member (NOOB) Looking for help. HTC Desire

Hi folks, I have just joined as a friend of mines told me XDA was the place to look for help in sorting out my HTC Desire.
I will do some reading over the weekend and hopefully sort the problem out myself and not need to look like a complete tosser. There is obviously millions of members and endless amounts of topics to chose from.
A brief description of my problem : I installed the HTC Gingerbread 2.33 RUU a few months back and ran into issues with the storage, which I believe the update warned of. Anyway, that RUU updated the handset no problem, but me being me I decided I wanted to revert to a stock rom so downloaded an older version which failed to install on the phone.
I used Revolutionary method to gain S-Off and created a NAND back up without any problems then I tried to run the old RUU and hit a brick wall so to speak. I am now stuck on the TMobile UK loading screen and although I can boot into HBOOT menu I cant use recovery to gain access to the back up or anything else.
My PC is now wont find my Desire as a phone but just a Android Device.
As I say I will do some searching and hopefully find my way through the maze of information.
If I need anymore help I will give full details of ROM Version , HBOOT and exactly how I got my phone into such a sorry state.
Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help me.
