I've upgraded my Desire to LeeDroid 1.8. I went from the branded HTC 2.1 ROM to the LeeDroid. After that my POP3 mails won't stay on the phone if I download the mails with my computer.
Before I was able to save a copy of the mails on the phone an deleting it after 3 days. Now my mails instantly disappear after syncing my POP3 account with a email client like Thunderbird. That's annoying. I searched for a workaround but I can't find one.
Any hints for me?
Well, that sound OK for me ... just tell Thunderbird to leave the mails on the server for 5 days also. Otherwise you won´t be able to get them with your phone, and mails you have allready downloaded with you phone are deleted, because the phone thinks, you deleted them elsewhere. Thats the sense of syncing ...
Otherwise you could use IMAP instead of POP3. In this case, your mails stay allways on the server ... kind of backup then.
Bug or feature?
Well, before the update the phones stores copies of the mails and saved them for 3 days! That was great, because the important mails stand on the phone and get deleted after a short time.
It's annoying because in 2.1 the mails where copies and stayed on the phone. Have I really switch to IMAP? I don't want to connect all my mails with google.
I think, you have to share at least 3 days of you mails with google ...
You don´t need to use IMAP, but you have to setup thunderbird to leave the last 3 day´s emails on you pop server.
I can confirm the same behaviour with the stock froyo update.
Previously on the Telstra branded 2.1, Emails would stay on the phone even after downloading the emails onto my PC which would remove them from the server.
Since the upgrade, the next sync would empty the inbox on the phone which matches the now empty server. This matches what I have seen previously on Win Mobile.
On 2.1, the emails would stay in the phones inbox even though they have been removed from the server.
Tried setting to IMAP or POP but with the same results.
I quite liked the feature in 2.1 where the emails stayed visible.
That's the thing what I mean (but my English doesn't let me explain it so clearly like yours)
I hope there is a fix?
I think this was a fix, because now it does what it should do.
Just leave your mails a few days on the server with your pop client.
This way you have to delete spam mails only once.
Ok, perhaps there should be a button for switching the behavior.

Can someone help me here please?
I have Exchange set up on my Desire. Occasionally, the last day or so's emails will not show on the phone under the inbox. They are there on the PC which is also on exchange but not the phone!
If I move the lost emails using the pc to a subfolder then back to the inbox and then resync the phone, the emails reappear on the phone's email app!
Any clues about what is going on here?

Are you sure none of the clients are removing the mail from the server after reading?
We have been having this problem in our office as well, without the use of phones. Some computers see all emails and others tend to make a selection. Really really annoying.
Couldn't figure it out.
I was getting this the first few days that I had the phone, in desperation I deleted the account each time and added it again. I think I did this three times in all, but I've not had it happen for sometime now. It's my own Exchange server running Exchange 2007 - I couldn't find anything in the logs to indicate a problem, and as it's not happened since I not bothered to look any further.
My wife's phone has done it a couple of times. Mine never has. We both use Activesync against my own 2010 Exchange server.
Deleting the account and re-adding seems to sort it, but is a pain. The mails are definitely there on the Exchange side. The mails seem to appear initially on the phone and then some time after (during another sync) disappear completely from the phone.

You mention you are syncing with an Exchange 2010 server. Does your Calendar also get synced?
What makes it really weird is that touchdown running on the phone doesnt bugger it up! I may email HTC just to get really annoyed and fobbed off by them....

Yep - the Calendar syncs.
Unfortunately the Desire doesn't support stuff like setting appointments to free/busy/out of office and if you create a repeated appointment on the phone you can't set an end date.
These are issues with the phone as a whole though, not just Exchange 2010.
i configured my hotmail accounts (2 of them) on the stock email program that comes with the desire.
yet it doesn't show my old emails.
it only shows my new emails.
it's a bit annoying, because now i can only read my new emails, but not look back at the emails that were on the server before is configured my desire.
i double checked that the emails are kept on the server, and not removed by an other email client or something.
i had 20 emails on 1 of my account that were on there before i configured my desire.
i've recieved 2 emails on that account since then.
on my desire it only shows 2 messages (the new ones i just recieved).
anybody any idea how to get those old ones?
Increase the download option to All messages or to your preference in settings?
allready choose the option to download all in stead of the last 3 days... no avail...

it all works great, and i like it very much.
except for 1 thing, if a delete a message on the server, my phone still saves it.
i want it so sync and delete the messages that are removed from the server.
i check my mail during the day with my phone, at night i check it on my laptop.
there are often emails in my inbox that are rubish, so i delete them.
usually i do this at night (don't know why, but i just like to do my paperwork at night).
so when i want to check my email during the day, my phone syncs with the account i select but still shows all the email i deleted.
so i have to manually delete them from my phone.
i hate this stupid way they made this.
why in *****'s name would i want to save a message that i deleted from the server?
does anybody have a solution to this problem?
because there aren't a lot of good email clients for android.

What type of email you have setup?
POP3, IMAP?
POP3 will not delete emails (if you delete an email from server, it will stay on the device, and vice versa).
In IMAP, if you delete email from server, it will be deleted from the device too (or vice versa -> device-server, on the next sync)
like is said, it's hotmail so it's pop3.
who came up with the brilliant idea to sync imap and not sync pop3?
again, one of those things i so ****ing hate with software.
why does my windows vista mail program (on the laptop) sync beautifully with my account, but not my android mail program?
is android just to retarded to understand how to sync with pop3?
the day somebody comes up with a program that just works.....
it just pisses me off that nothing with the desire is made to be just right, every little rotten thing needs tweaking to make it work right.

..hm I came from a windows mobile device and I synched the same account; deleting an email in outlook has been also deleted on the device - and vice versa!
It's not about android, Desire, or Windows XP. It's how POP3 works.
Even if you setup the same account on 2 different PCs as POP3, you wont be able to delete emails from one PC to the other.
What I suggest is enabling IMAP on gmail and see how it goes.

If it's a gmail account and it used to work on WM but not on Android, then I would delete and re-add the account. My gmail account works great. I delete or mark as read an email on my PC or webmail, and the same goes to my Desire on the next sync.
If we're talking about personal domain (not gmail, hotmail...), then during setup in the Mail application choose the IMAP protocol.
that still deosn't solve the issue with hotmail on the desire.
hotmail is pop3, doesn't do imap.
but it works great with windows mobile.
on android it works like it's just rubbish.
I don't know about that really, I don't use hotmail.
I use gmail, and personal domain/server.
I hope someone else can help you with your hotmail issue.

they can figure out how to get the bleu led to switch on and off, but nobody can make a tweak so hotmail gets synced properly?
I think it's because in the WinMob email app you can tell it to download emails from the last 3 days and anything older disappears automatically.
The Android email apps don't do this but you can set them to delete emails from the server so if you delete the email on your phone it will delete it from the server but you can't do it the other way round.
has anyone found a solution for this.

Seeing how HTC have now screwed up email storage so that once the email is deleted from the original source it is also deleted from the phone, is there a way to save certain emails in another folder?
Or does anyone know if HTC are aware of this problem and are working on it? It started after the Froyo update.
The way you're describing it, it doesn't sound like HTC (or Google) screwed up anything.
If I delete an email from the server, I would expect that same email to be deleted on my phone. This is the very definition of "synchronization". Whatever happens on one device will happen to every other device that synchronizes with it.
If you intend to keep an email, why would you delete it off the server?
Why not create an archive folder to store the emails you want to save and then set up your phone to sync that folder? Or just leave it in your inbox. You can choose to flag it if you want to be able to spot it faster.
Btw, you didn't mention how you're connecting to your email. Exchange, POP, IMAP?
I'm connecting with POP. Now up until the Froyo update I could leave emails on my phone for as long as I wished by setting the Send & Receive settings - Download Options - By Days - All and it made no difference. Since the update it deletes the phone's inbox whenever I delete mail from the server it came from.
I won't go into why I delete from that server - it's to do with having access to mail on three different devices and how they collect it.
There are ways around it but it means having to delete things manually from the server and making sure a few are kept until I don't need them on the phone any longer.
Can I save emails on the phone in another folder that I create?
It doesn't sound like you should be using POP3 at all. POP3 is suitable if you access your email using one client only. Once you access your email server with POP3 from more than one client, it just gets very messy. Each client's inbox contents will be different from one another.
If possible, you should always connect via IMAP4 or Exchange. As a plus, they allow you to synchronize folder structures.
I've always found that POP3 causes a lot of trouble for me. Always end up with mysteriously deleted emails on either server or client.
I understand what you're saying, but if I use IMAP, does that not mean that the emails only stay on the phone as long as they are on the server, leaving me in the same predicament?
At the moment, I have all my email go to a webmail service. From there it fwds to my ISP and from there to my home computer where it remains permanently. Now, at the same time, I have a laptop that gets the mail from the webmail and then deletes it off the server. I also have my phone which gets the mail from the webmail but leaves it undeleted so the laptop can also get at it (once it's on the laptop, I don't care if it's on the phone). BUT, there are some emails that are good to have saved on the phone like flight info, etc for when I travel for work.
Not as confusing as it sounds and this works best for us as my wife and I share the address and we can see all the mail at any time on any device.
From what I understand of IMAP, once it is deleted from the webmail, it also disappears on any computer that is using IMAP. I want to make sure that certain messages are on the hard drive of any device at any time.
If you know better, then I'm all ears!
First, yes, using IMAP will mean that deleting the email off the server will effectively delete it off your phone.
But I still think you should use IMAP but just change your behavior a bit.
- Connect via IMAP with your PC and your phone.
- Create 2 folders under your Inbox. Name it appropriately. (eg "Attn needed" and "Archive"). Remember to setup your email clients on both your PC and phone to sync these folders as well.
- If you have any emails where action is required, then leave it in your Inbox or put it in the "Attn needed" folder.
- If you have any emails where you just want saved, then put it in "Archive" folder.
- Delete emails only when you're absolutely sure you will never need them.
It sounds like you delete your emails because you don't want to use up all your server space. To get around this, just do the following. (I'm assuming you are using MS Outlook but you should be able to do this with other email clients like Mozilla Thunderbird, etc)
- Create a Personal Folder. In Outlook, these are *.pst files. Name it appropriately. (eg. "Old emails")
- Every month or so, just do a quick cleanup by moving all the mails you don't want on the server into the Personal Folder which is saved locally on your PC. (Keep in mind that the moved mails will no longer be available on your phone as well.)
Alternatively, try the following. This is easier and more automated. But depending on your needs, it may not be appropriate for you.
- Connect via IMAP with your PC and your phone.
- Create a new Gmail account.
- On your PC email client, set a rule so that each new email gets forwarded to the Gmail account.
- This way, you can delete mails off your phone, PC, or server as much as you want. A copy will always be available in Gmail. As a bonus, the search feature in Gmail is just great. (If you want to save all outgoing emails as well to Gmail, just bcc yourself on your emails)
- For emails that needs your attention, just flag it. In the HTC Email application, you can filter out all the flagged emails by sliding over to the "Marked" tab.

The fact that the device can't store emails once they come off the server is total bs. In fact, I have the same problem which DID NOT OCCUR when on 2.1. As soon as I put froyo on it started to happen.
THIS IS NOT NORMAL!!! All my blackberries never did this nor did my desire on 2.1. There is something wrong with froyo on certain devices and HTC does not have an answer yet.
Go to your setting in outlook and check off the 'leave emails on server' option for 3,7 or however many days you think you need.

I have requested that they reinstate a proper use of POP3 and I would suggest to anyone else to email them on their support page and ask the same. I they realise how many of us are annoyed at this then they may do something about it.

Can you believe that these clowns are calling it a 'feature?'...they honestly must we're stupid or something. How can auto-deleting emails be a 'feature'??? Why cant I simply delete them myself like on Gmail? ALso if this is a 'feature' why is it then that some handsets do it while others don't???
Just moved from WM (Diamond) to Droid and loving the desire so far, however there's 1 problem that drives me nuts.
I've setup my Desire to receive mail from yahoo, as well as a few other POP3 and IMAP email accounts I have, and while the phone does download emails according to schedule, all downloaded email are marked as UNREAD whether they are actually read or not.
This happens using the MAIL application that comes with the phone (I'd think it's a goggle app, not a HTC app), but also the K-9 Mail app.
This problem also happens on 2 different ROMs ... so it's not a ROM problem.
It's extremely annoying because I keep getting notifications of 'new' emails that I've already read!
This does not happen for gmail if I use the gmail app ... but gmail is not my primary email account.
I never had this problem in my WM days neither.
that is, because the mail app actully downloads new emails (via pop3) and doesnt know, if you already read the mails elsewhere.
Go to properties and change the protocol to IMAP. (and the according adresses and ports).
