The stock messaging app is compressing my pictures WAY TO MUCH. All the way to 23 kb from a 1.5 mb picture. And it greatly reduces the image quality. Is there a way to make it not compress so much. Maybe only compress to like 1 mb to send.

I noticed this too. It makes our picture messages look like CRAP. Would love to be able to send out better quality pictures. Not sure if it a limitation with the MMS standard though.
+1 I'd love to see a solution to this problem.
The same picture using the stock messaging app reduced the pic to 29kb while handsent reduced it to 267kb ... it would be great if the stock messenger could do that.
Surely there is a way to fix this problem?
Anyone?
I've tried Handcent too and it still compresses it to silly amounts.
Hey guys, try flashing these but do a nandroid first. I take no credit for these as they were not made by me but I'm on the xda app and I can't link it to the thread.
This one doesn't compress the image unless you go over the limit (1mb)

This one raises the limit to 5mb

Hope this works for you
Most custom roms raise the mms compression to 2mb or 5mb give some a try or search for the mms compression fix.

Is this only for sense 2.2 roms?
Update I
I think so I have sense 3.5 and the flash aborted

does anyone know how to change the mms LIMIT size on the g2 sense roms?
my default mms limit on my message app is 300k and i wanna change it to 3500k.
ive been looking around and i have not found a solution -___-
appreciate any help.
thank you in advance.
To go up that high you would need to rip apart the Mms.apk, something I've actually been working on for CM/Vanilla since Calkulin over in the EVO 4G section managed to do it. He did it with the Sense mms app so it's a bit different and I'm newish to this whole decompile/recompile business.
Here's a link to his stuff if anybody want's to give it a go (maybe it'll work with our Sense ROMs?).
Handcent would still compress images to a crap 1KB-25KB size when sending since it relied on the Mms.apk to do some of the work, even if you set the limit to 1MB or higher (now you can set it to 5MB, says only for the EVO though). Lately though with CM7 I noticed that it's not an issue anymore. Maybe it's a self reliant app, in which case you may be able to completely remove the Mms.apk. I'll try it later and report back. The stock Mms app still seems to compress though, at least last time I checked it did.
That's all I have for you right now. Hope it helps.

on Virtuous rom i was on 3500k mms. now on SEGA rom the limit is 300k.
Yeah, some devs change these limits. Doesn't really matter much if they don't edit the compression though which *i think* virtuous does.
I have not tested this yet so I need a few volunteers.
This is a recompiled stock messaging app with the mms compression size increased to 5 Mb (stock is 1 Mb).
Flash in recovery. I have also attached a 100% stock version in case you are having issues and need to return to stock.
Let me know if it works.
I tried this on my Midnight rom... It was a nogo. Am i doing something wrong? Thanks
Its too early where i live to mms anyone now
Ill wait a few hours before doing so

If this fails, then it means it must be code, which I don't know....
Sorry to bring back this thread from months ago,,,but anyone know of a modded mms.apk that allows slightly larger pic messages?
other than switching to gomms or other messaging apps...
I'm trying to send a picture, but I get an error message saying,
"Message size limit reached."
Sorry, you cannot add this picture to your message.
the picture is 982 KB and I wanted to know if anyone knows a mod that will extend the limit size like they have droid x
running MIUI 203020 version
droid incredible
I believe that is a cap set by verizon and most other carriers, and not the android os. I could be wrong though.
No, I'm afraid that--that's not the case. It has something to do with MIUI rom.

Oh yeah i forgot there is a setting for 200k, 500k, and 1.2mb in the stock gb messaging app. Sorry i know nothing about MIUI. Have you tried a third party app like handcent etc. I use handcent and like it way better than the stock app.
I like the miui sms app...
Currently most Mms.apk's have a max size of 1MB. Anything over that gets insanely compressed as you all know. The stock one is even worse.
I'm thinking of doing one with a max size of 2 or 3MB since that's around the size of most of our pictures. Hopefully I can take even more slack off the compression (no promises on that one yet, haven't found it's hiding spot).
Anyone interested? I'm going to do it anyway just figured I'd see the interest level here before making a new thread for it. Also, any other ideas/suggestions are welcome.
Id be interested. Im tired of having to run a different rom just to get some features someone could mod.
Handcent has the option to increase the size limit to 5mb which is what i use and it works great. It says Evo only but it works fine on my phone been using it for a long time now. But if you can get the stock messing app to that limit i will use it. Handcent sends portrait photos sideways bcuz of samsungs crappy way of determining orientation. When sending portrait photos is the only time i send thru stock app cuz it sends correctly but quality is destroyed

But the thing is handcent for me is spotty. Very spotty.
Well I'll be starting the work and testing on it after this weekend. Yes, Handcent is nice but as stated it can be spotty and not work sometimes. I don't think the max size needs to be at 5MB, 3MB should be enough but I don't see any harm in setting it a 5 just in case.

this would be great!
(I hate handcent!)
I hate handcent as well lol.
Idk what u guys mean by spotty. I didn't think handcent needed a signal lol.. But i look forward to ur work when its done! I'll be able to send pics taken in portrait mode straight not sideways, plus no horrible compression

Spotty as in sometimes it wont send the pic even though it is saying it is.

Ah ok. I think i had that issue when a update came out. I fixed it by messing with an option that disabled the stock messenger. Once i enabled it back the problem went away instantly. I stick with handcent bcuz the stock app is ugly and the horrible compression it does. Maybe OP can give the stock app a make over? Lol

I have been looking for some time and this is driving me nuts, I'm stuck between the stock AOSP Messaging apk and ChompSMS. The reasoning is because the stock AOSP Messaging apk scales my MMS photo's to a butchered mess of pixles (horrible for scsreen shots because you can't even read what I tried to take a screen shot of when sending it), so to solve this I was using ChompSMS to send full resolution pictures via MMS however ChompSMS is messed up too because if anyone sends me an MMS I need to disable chomp, restart the phone, then the MMS appears in the stock Messaging apk.. Driving me nuts having to reboot my phone so frequently during the day every time I receive a MMS and the fact that I need to use two programs just so people can see what I'm sending them is a hastle.
Are there any stock AOSP messaging apk's that do not scale the photo's before they send? Can I take the messaging app from JellyBAM 7.7.0 becuase that one did not scale photo's via MMS but now that I'm on RootBox it scales just like it does on ParanoidAndroid, CyanogenMod, Xylon, LiquidSmooth, AOKP, and JellyBAM 7.8.0
I just don't want pixaly scaled MMS photo's anymore, I use MMS a lot and no one can ever understand what I'm trying to show them because the photo's are of such poor quality.
Any idea's how I can find a stock AOSP Messaging apk that doesn't scale MMS? or extract the AOSP messaging apk from JellyBAM 7.7.0 to use with RootBox 4?
You could certainly extract the desired apk and place it into your build to test.
I use both winrar and 7zip when messing around with apk's...
There are many other methods, but I've found while using winrar, I can pull apk's from one build and place them directly to the next then flash and test.
It takes a bit of practice, but is really quite easy.
And was my debloating method of choice for a long time...then root explorer apps became very popular and easy too.
The method of extraction and placement is entirely up to you, but many methods work, and are certainly worth a try.
Standard disclaimers apply of course, and remember those nandroid backups before playing around in system files....g
I didn't think it would be that straight forward, thanks, I'll give this a go and if I can get it working, I'll upload the non scaling messaging apk for others.
Thanks again
No problem. ...
When I first started playing with roms I'd swap apk's all the time with winrar on PC...
I download the rom I want to use. ..and the rom I wanted parts from. ..
Then open and copy/paste the apk into the destination app folder. ..
Winrar kept my rom signing intact so the build would flash. ..
It's fast and a kinda fun once you nail the technique..
At one point I used a stripped CM9 rom that was only 54 meg in size after I stripped and modded it...
Wow that rom hauled butt....lol
Happy moding.....g
hey
handcent is also a great messaging app i gives you the option to have it re-size which i know you hate or it can let you use the phones standard mms or i like for a large picture is say you have a picture 1920x1200 or what ever you can use there service and it will hold the picture and send a link to the person and they can just click on the link and it will direct them to handcents server and get the full unchanged pic try it out if ya dont like it there will be different options good luck

This is the greatest thing I have ever heard about Android to this date! I'm so glad that I just bought a new WINDOWS laptop instead of another Mac
Also, for the record, RootBox fixed this problem in 4.1 and still working in 4.2 so no more scaling photo's for MMS, I still can't send Video though, it says size limit exceeded even if I record it in low quality it still won't send. Oh well, MMS Videos look like crap anyways.
Thanks for the tips, I'm going to get further into Android now that I'm on Windows again.
