[Q] New phone - Desire General

Hello guys,
i 'm new here and i would like to ask you sth..I currently own an iPhone 3GS but after a year of use i got a bit bored , tired mainly with the software..too closed imo..u have to jb so that u can make the most of it and apple just makes things worse patching stuff and other s**t like that..So i found about Desire a week ago and i was thinking of buying it..But because i dont want to spend my money on a mobile which probably will be outdated in a while , would it be wise to hold on to my iPhone and buy an android cell later on in case some new cpu models ship , new android os comes out and stuff like that??
thnx

There will always be a new phone coming out. If you hold out till later today, you will hear of a new phone being developed with awesome specs. I heard of the Desire HD a month after I got mine and I'm sure you will hear of a Desire 2 or whatever coming out early next year just after waiting for and getting an HD.
Know what you want out of a phone and look for a phone that best fits your needs and wants. The Desire does this for me and I look forward to my next purchase next year when my wants and needs change again. The HD will be a purchase for the gf if she's good but its too big for my personal use. I'll get a tablet next year as well (Android of course) and that will fill a different need and want.
Good luck picking a phone

Worth getting Desire now (to last 2 years)?

Getting a new phone at end of August, one that will need to last me two years. I know a phone usually goes out of date within a year but I'd like a phone that will make a decent attempt at staying in, via updates or whatever.
I'm really attracted to the Desire, but it is already 6 months old and I am worried that the hardware is already out of date. Should I get the Desire or should I start looking at some of the newer phones to continue the next two years?
If you think I should look at other phones, please suggest them. I also have my eye on the SGS, but the dev community behind the Desire (and the lack of apparent bugs on it, the SGS is fraught with them) keeps pulling me back to the Desire.
Chances are, there will be an 18 month contract out in August, so it might not be too bad.
Id recommend the Desire, but then again, better Android phones might be out by then so only time can tell.

Hmm, I'd rather stick to a 24 month plan as it is generally cheaper to do so.
Of course, if another amazing phone comes out in the next month then I'd reconsider, but as for now that's unlikely and choice for me is really coming down to the Desire vs the SGS.
I really like the community behind the Desire, and if people are going to stay behind it for a long time to come, I will most probably get the Desire. On the other hand, if the Desire's life is 'coming to an end' with the Desire HD and SGS coming out, and if people think the SGS is the 'next big thing', I might just get the SGS instead.
I think a 24 month plan would leave you stick with the same phone for too long.
1.5 Ghz Snapdragons are scheduled to be released till the end of the year, and dual cores are expected in the first half of next year.
1 Ghz snapdragon is still the high end category, but not for too long.
If you really want the Desire, wait a little more, and you might get one with a super amoled screen.....
Personally, I'd choose one of the new or upcoming droid(s) now.

There won't be any super amoled Desires, HTC are going to use a SLCD. (or a similar name)
My bad if I've missed more recent news about it since I read that

So would you recommend getting the SGS, ride out the bugs and wait for better updates?
I'm still a student and the phone I get will have to last me two years. Unless I win the lottery, of course.
I havent really heard of any new phones that are "Major game changers" recently, Unlike the desire which I had discovered well before it was even called that! I think all the companies have brought out there major hardware for this year anyway, X10, Galaxy S, Desire, Nexus One, Only other thing I can think of is Dell Streak and Motorola's new phone, When ever that comes to the UK if at all judging by the Milestone delay.
Stick with desire IMO
I can't speak for the Desire but I do have an SGS and am fairly happy with it. To me it seams, yes, there are many bugs still and it's far from perfect, and the dev community for SGS isn't so big yet. However, there have been a massive amount sold already and they expect a lot more sales, so that is bound to grow.
Also, it seems Samsung is working their ass off to get things fixed, and are dev-friendly (easy root, APIs, etc) We have new leaked firmwares now every few days. But will it fix everything? I had to face the same decision 3 weeks ago and went SGS.
So what to advise ? I wouldn't at the moment. If the SGS were operating perfectly I would definitely advise it over the Desire (I personally fell for the specs), but such is not the case.
The best advise I can give is, you still have a couple of weeks... postpone the decisions until more information is available, and SGS has had more fixes
Hi, Vodafone do it on 18 month for £35, 600mins, Unlimited txt and 1GB data which isn't half bad! (i think) lol

Thanks for your input, probably the best I've had in a while. I definitely got that impression about Samsung and how they seem to be acknowledging the dev community. If this is truly the path they are taking and the community is willing to take the bait (why not, it's a great piece of hardware) then the SGS will definitely be a great phone.
I suppose I'll take a break for 3 weeks and reaccess the situation then. My brain is still thinking a LOT about this though and it's hard to shut it off!
Thanks all, though more input is always welcome.
EDIT: Nvm.
HTC Ace
I have the Desire, and it's great. Rumoured HTC Ace (aka HTC Desire HD) coming in October ... bigger screen, more on board storage, HDMI out, same 1Ghz processor.
As much as I love my phone (even more now that it's rooted to Froyo), I would be tempted to hold off a couple of months to see what appears.

New phone what to have...

I am able to get a new Phone in 3wks time as my contract is up, its a dilemma for me though i'm more than happy with my DHD, but my daughter wants it and i'm getting some pressure to get a new phone...
I'm thinking maybe Sensation or Galaxy S2, last few phones have been HTC and i've been more than happy with them but the galaxy looks pretty good too...
Anybody made the move recently any regrets, thanks for any info...
My dad has got the s2 and its a really nice phone. One thing I don't like about it mind is the plastic. I've gotten so use to the aluminium on the dhd that it just seems kind of cheap. However it is very light.
Maybe wait for the next round of ICS devices before you purchase a new phone.

[Q] New phone or continue with my Desire?

I love my HTC Desire more than any phone I have ever had. I baught it the day it came out, and I have not had any trouble with it ever since. I have used CM since 6.x version and I love the product. It has kept me up to date without having to upgrade my phone.
Now im testing out some of the ISC versions that works on my phone, still I feel that the hardware is now not enough for me, (including cam- quality, and especially internal memory and processor speed).
So I wonder what phone should I consider if I decide to buy a new phone? Or should I wait for something extraordinary to come on the market?
Wait for HTC Edge or Ville. I also came to conclusion that I want better GPU and better camera. For 2-year-old phone Desire is still unbelievable competitive.

Those two phones looks amazing, especially the Edge with the quad-core. Hope the camera could be a reasonably replacement for a digital camera. I havent seen many phones that can match the flash that regular digital cameras have.
I am more devoted to stay with HTC after I saw they have the HTCdev.com .
Was considering to look into some of the samsung- phones, but I feel its a bit more plastic than HTC.
I agree with mikbe on this one. My Desire is suprisingly competitive after almost two years. If I should buy a phone today, it would probably be the SII. But since my Desire is still alive and kicking, I'm gonna wait for the "next big thing", whatever (or whoever) that might be. I love my HTC, but I'm not married to them Maybe the SIII...?

After experimenting with launchers and AOSP I have always come back to Sense. That's why HTC is my next phone.

Same here, still enjoying my Desire as if I got it yesterday.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
if you buy today, then I would choose HTC Sensation
but it is reasonable to wait for HTC Edge
if you buy the Samsung I bought a samsung galaxy nexus
Just be a few weeks until the next set of HTC phones will be released at MWC. I would wait until after then - something might grab you, or if not, the current phones should come down in price. This is the worst time to buy just now!

after my htc desire I may switch to the htc sensation
though...i also like the size and look of it very much
having a tablet some of the 'new-power-devices' features are not required
i may even go back to a smaller phone next time...so having more a 'telephone' than a small supercomputer
I was htc fan for many years now..but also considering a samsung as my next android phone
I think I will wait for the next great HTC phone. Now that I have Sandvolds ICS I can float a bit longer. And now that I have an extra partition I can install lots of stuff. The ICS is a bit buggy, bit hopefully it will become complete. Sandvold is doing a great job. Recommend it for everyone !

Buy the HTC ONE X or wait?

Hello everyone, i still didnt buy the X, waited to see the reviews after launch so far so bad.
Do you think its better to wait SGIII or just buy the phone ? Plz details.
Its better if you own the phone to answer the question.

Up to you. Specs or OS? Sense vs TouchWiz.
Sure the SGS3 may beat the HOX on specs we all know that! But it comes down to user experience and Sense beats TW. Unless TouchWiz 5 will be a complete revamp we don't know!
You can wait but you'll be waiting forever there's always something better around the corner. Choose what's important for you.
Wait!.... err I mean BUY IT!
Really?
Every new phone will have issues, will always be like that, the SG3 will also have issues.
Just buy the One-X or wait for ever on your "perfect" phone

I agree with this...you can sit and wait for the "best" phone, or just jump in and get it done. Who's to say the SGS won't have issues?? That is not to say "Buy the OneX", or "Buy the SGSIII"...it just means, you can sit and debate what will be best until you die and never have a new phone.
For my 2c, if you are asking this question, it means you really just want someone to justify what you already want, so just go out and buy it. I did and I am really happy with it. Sure, there are one or two niggling things, but all phones will have those...seriously, this thing is freaking amazing. If you want it, just do it...if you want the SGS, hang out for a while. Simple.
Getting my OneX after weekend. If in couple of months I will prefer S3 then I will change. if not i will continue with pretty awesome OneX
If you would have aproved specs for S3, then I would say choose w/e you like best.
But since there are only rumors around S3, then it can take forever to get released, by time its released theres soemthing else to come! Its same as w8ing to be 80years old to finally buy a house.
Want upgrade? Found phone you like? GO FOR IT
The One X just happened to be released first after my contract was up - so I got one - if the SGS3 was available earlier I may have got that.
One X is superb and I will not be regretting this decision so unless you just prefer Samsung for some reason get the One X and enjoy it NOW
htc one

[Q] Your Desire's second life?

Hey guys the Desire has been out on the market for a while now and I'd think that some/many of you would have had a chance to get a new phone. Therefore I'm curious whether this is actually the case and, if so, where are you still using it for? Did you find alternative applications?
I think most of the people here use their desires at their primary device (or for a friend or loved ones primary) . That being said I also think most people here are stuck in contracts, frugal, or from a country with weak buying power. Because let's be honest..There are much better phones out there.

Perhaps they just don't want to trash a working phone? Because that's quite a decadent attitude. I count myself to these people who just don't want to be a consumption zombie just because there's something "better and new". :cyclops:

I agree with your logic. I know there are much better and powerful phones out there and may be I can afford them too.
But my Desire is working flawlessly and there is not a single scratch on the screen and all the hardware buttons ate working well.
Keep flashing new ROMs and I don't see any reason to get the latest and greatest phone spending a fortune. I will get one when my dear old Desire dies completely

Somehow I agree. I'd rather spend that money upgrading pc than buying a new phone which is exactly that - a phone.

Had my Desire since it came out in the UK and still going strong. Better phones coming out all the time but my Desire does everything I need to do so will keep with it until it gives up the ghost.

That, although I got mine as payment for SIM unlocking a stack of 10 of them... And it sounds a bit more "lived in" than yours. Got one persistent issue with wifi tether and WPA2 so will probably order up a new phone soon.

I agree, add that to the list. I'd like to mention selling and upgrading is a healthy alternative to downright trashing.
For me, I've been pained with reception issues with my desire. I believe in the desires case newer is better.

I have been using the desire from 18 months now. I like playing around with it. I guess I may use it for another one year or so. There is nothing wrong with the phone except the battery (Not such a big issue for me as I have a desk job and can charge it anytime).

I'm not stuck in any contract and I'll also keep my Desire as long as it works. I like the weight, size, build quality, and capabilities. With a nice ROM it does pretty much the same things as newer phones. So why should I spend money on a newer, bigger, plastic phone if I like what I have.
Another thing is that after playing with friends' newer Android phones or iPhones I still like my Desire most. I'd be in trouble if I was to choose "my next phone" nowadays. I think the Desire has a big chance to become one of those "legendary phones" that people will remember and miss for a long time to come.
I don't stuck in contract too. I could buy me a new phone if i want, but i don't want that because my Desire got a second live thanks to vijendrahs.
I've installed vijendrahs CM10 JB 4.1.2 and i am very happy with that.
My Desire (i buy it 31 months ago) works like a charm, very fast and smooth.
Need to say:
This is the first phone, i use for that long period of time! Before i bought new phones every 12 to 24 months.

Yes, this is the first phone that I have managed to use for so long (33 months) and thanks to Custom ROMs, I am as happy today as I was on day 1.
More importantly, the phone has worked flawlessly all this time!
I bought a Desire S to replace my original Desire (PVT1), and gave my Desire to the missus. But I had hardware problems with the Desire S and I really didn't lioke how difficult it was to move the text cursor around on the screen when you can't see what you're doing because your fingers are in the way!
So I bought myself another original Desire (this time a PVT3), and that's what I'm using now. My wife has a Desire HD now as she prefers a bigger screen, so I've got the PVT1 back as well to use as a spare.
As well as being one of the last phones to have a decent hardware touchpad, the Desire is also nice and easy to change things on. I still plan to get the Desire S fixed (as newer OS releases have made the cursor work a bit better), but I'll keep the Desire for a while yet.
i think the desire does a real good job, when im looking to the JB ports... when you keep in mind, that the desire was (IMHO) the first good android phone (parallel to the first nexus )
I still really like the desire, but I had some problems with overheating, which resulted in bootloops and crashing the system. Additionally some buttons were not functioning properly, especially the volume and menu buttons, and I've got some difficulties hearing people at the other end of "the line".
I prefer the hardware buttons and the touchpad to whatever screen solution google is coming up with these days...
I'm still using my Desire as my primary phone after almost 3 years - first of all because I don't want to spend money on a new phone when this is working perfectly.
Admitted, I did spend a LOT of time flashing different ROMs in order to keep my phone alive and up-to-date. I thought as long as I got the latest android, why would I need a new phone?
Just downgraded to Gingerbread, though. Althogh JB was fun, I just like using tried-and-tested software on a tried-and-tested phone.
ALSO: why did they go away from hardware buttons? I would only buy a new phone which still has that optic trackball.

Agree, that trackball does (text) editing so much better, therefor i even like my D even more than my DHD
I totally agree with you guys. I plan to stick to my Desire for as long I can, this phone is just so good I hope it never breaks down.
With all the support from the developers here and some really great roms (especially vijendrahs CM10 JB 4.1.2) this phone has got alot going for it.
The funniest thing is when my friends brag about their phone having this or that that my phone hasn't I just tell them, well... we'll see in three years time what phone and rom you'll be using, my Desire has come this far so... and i've got JB on it while they mostly have ICS (they just stick to not rooting and flashing so it depends on the phone manufacturer).
