It says Package file was not signed correctly when I try to install it. Could this have something to do with the ROM I'm using?
I'm running skyraider 2.2 and it installed perfectly for me; straight from the market. The alarm clock function doesn't work but I think that's an issue with sense rather than the rom.

Which Skyraider? I'm using the aiccucus rom which is a non sense rom so maybe that's the problem?
I'm on CM 6 nightly, didn't install for me either.
Yeah, I am using the sense rom but if anything I'd figured that it'd play nicer with vanilla.

Sorry guys, I just deleted the VoiceSearch.apk from my phone and voice search still works which means this file isn't the one you're looking for.
From Twitter:
cyanogen: Yes I know the new Voice Search won't install on CM because of different signatures. Should be fixable.
Sent from my Incredible using Tapatalk
Is anyone else using the new voice search getting a Force Close every time you try any of the new functions which depend on (afaik) gmail -- such as "note to self" "send email to..." and so on? Other functions work fine such as "call such and such" or "listen to whatever", but anything message-like causes a FC when I press 'send' from the text-confirmation window.
I am running on the 8/1 leak, and have tried various things all to no avail including clearing application data, uninstalling old versions first (by different methods), not uninstalling old versions first, and all with nandroid restores in-between. Any more ideas?
EDIT: OK, some progress. It seems that there is an issue with the Gmail.apk that I was using (version 2.2.1). If I removed or renamed it, then the messaging functions of the new voice search would not force close, but would instead look for another mail handler (such as htc). I then tried pushing via adb the Gmail.apk that was originally in the 8/1 leak (version 2.2) and to my surprise everything works now. I will mess around a bit more to see if I can get a 2.2.1 working again without it causing a FC, but it seems that is where my issue was.
Voice search installed fine on jager rom v3.2 no force closes yet. I've tried to use the note to self voice action, but after I say the command it asks to send an email with an empty subject and body message.
hey everyone, if you're having trouble getting the voice search to work. Vlingo just made their android app free on the market so i downloaded it and it works fairly well. it was previously 10 dollars. i know it's not the new google voice search but i'm going to try and use that until this gets working or we get an official OTA 2.2.
my incredible is unable to find it on the market so i used my girlfriends droid. I had to first delete voicesearch.apk to get it to install. I got it installed and working. So now i want to make a copy to send to my incredible but the problem is i dont see it anywhere on my phone. Not under /system/app or /data/app. Not a single app is showing as even being written on the current date, yet the voice search works.
UPDATE:
I didn't see a com.google.android.voicesearch or com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox, so I just removed the 2 apk's, and voice search installed just fine.
Saw a force quit during note to self.
I found this article on CM forums, but do these instructions apply to the Incredible running CM?
I'm running CM test 8, but the pm uninstall commands don't seem to want to work - I'm getting this error:
pm: exec: line 7: app_process: not found
Does anyone know how we can uninstall VoiceSearch.apk as well as the widget?
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/4231-installing-updated-voice-search/
adb pull /system/app/ ~/Desktop/app/
adb remount
adb shell rm -f /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
adb shell pm uninstall com.google.android.voicesearch
adb shell rm -f /system/app/GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk

Running the 8/1 leak, 2.2.1 GMail. "note to self" with the updated voice search works fine for me.
I have it running in a CM6 Nightly. I removed it with titanium backup. Rebooted and it installed. I may of wiped cache too.
I was able to install it using Skyraider Vanilla with no problems.
Now the Chrome to phone app wouldn't install, I think it was because I already had that app installed which it was an older version of that app.

I believe in Fresh if you want to use any voice applications you need to go and reinstall the voice search APK.
It can be found on the SD card under fresh-removed-apks/VoiceSearch
and the reason flipz took this out was it breaks something?

you can download "talk 1.3 installer [root]" in market...

For sure I used the link provided above: talk installer 1.3

i installed busybox and talk 1.3 but didn't work
can you tell me all the steps that you have done?
Didn't work for me.
I backed up and uninstalled the Talk app with TB, then ran the Talk 1.3 installer from the market, which failed (said something like "can't copy Talk.apk"). Then, to make matters worse, TB refused to reinstall the app from the backup - it just hung, even with the indirect option enabled (makes me wonder why I paid for it!).
I eventually got the talk app back by flashing the latest stock ROM (there just happened to be a new one available when I fired up Kies).
Edit: I just thought I'd try again using just the Talk 1.3 installer. However, it won't even backup the stock app - like with the attempted installation before, it says it cannot copy Talk.apk. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, since I'm not doing very much at all!
Edit2: I just checked in /system/bin and there is no "cp" symlink in there - perhaps that's the problem? (I rooted using the recovery method, which installed busybox, but it doesn't seem to have created the cp symlink...)
Edit3: I sorted the cp issue by installing a terminal emulator and running "busybox --install /system/xbin". Backing up with the Talk 1.3 Installer now works. I don't have a good data connection where I am at the moment though so I can't have another go and installing the modified Talk app until later.
Edit4: The installation of the modified Talk app now works, but it force closes whenever I try to start it. I've tried all the versions in the installer, and they all FC on startup. I could easily restore the original apk from the installer's backup though, so no damage done.
Confirmed [root] Talk 1.3 Installer works.
Requirements:
1) Rooted Phone
2) Titanium backup (root)
Steps:
1) Sign out from gTalk
2) Make backup of Talk app using Titanium
3) Wipe Data for Talk app using Titanium
4) Uninstall Talk app using Titanium
5) Download [root] Talk 1.3 Installer from Market
6) Run it .. it will ask you to backup .. Select No
7) It will ask again ... again Select No
8) Use recommended version and then let it install new Talk
9) After installing you will need to sign in again to your Google account.
10) Now you can use Talk with voice and video
Yay! The above method works. I can only assume it was force closing before because I didn't wipe the data from the old app.
The only problem I've found so far is that I don't seem to be able to start video chats with anyone - they have to "call" me. But that's not a huge issue.
Edit: I also seem to have an ongoing video chat notification that I can't get rid of, even after signing out. I have to force stop Talk to get rid of it. Annoying, but again, not a huge issue.
I went back to the stock version in the end. As far as I can tell, the modded version only works with video the first time you connect - if you want to start another video chat after you've ended the first one, you have to force close Talk and start it again. I think this may be connected to the fact that the ongoing video chat notification never disappears from the status bar.
Anyway, I've decided it's not worth the hassle - I've reinstalled the stock app and I'm just going to use Skype for video chat instead.

Amazingly, there are no search results for my issue, that I can find.
Anytime I go to use Swype, it pops up with a message that says it will not work until I update it. It's referring to the system update, however I'm running RandomRom EI22. I've also gotten the annoying system update message, even after freezing it in Terminal and deleting the file in Titanium. I've even let it try and update, let it fail, go into recovery and wipe cache. My Swype just won't work.
Any ideas?
Here is the instruction from RandomKing:
1. First, using a file explorer delete the following files:
- /system/app/Swype.apk
- /system/lib/libswypecorexxxxx.so [the x's stand in for the exact number]
2. Next, head here to download the installer.
3. The rest is pretty self explanatory.

Make sure you register to get access.
PS: Just got message from swype that their system is down....guess they are getting flooded with requests.
Remove Swype with root explorer and go to Swype's website on download their newest beta.
Edit: I see Tempt beat me to it.

Nevermind. Working now. Good luck.
Does anyone know if the swipe broke on stock?
Edit: Tested a stock EL30 Epic and swype still does work. Wonder why it broke on custom roms.
Most custom roms broke because these roms were running with beta swypes. Stock had older production version, I assume.
Only worked for a couple of days
Installed the new beta and it worked for 2 days. Now all the beta says is "please try again" every time I try and Skype. It is like before I installed the beta. If anyone can help that would be great.
installed new swype - but it force closes
I am facing the same issue but on my AT&T SGS2 running ICS'd out ROM.. All it says is new update available. please update to continue. I tried all steps to uninstall the current one (using root explorer) and install fresh from beta.swype.com but to no avail.. the new swype force closes.. Any solutions?
Edit:
FIX:
This is what worked for me::
1. Uninstall the newly installed swype beta (which caused force closes) via manage applications.
2. Delete (or move or rename) the following file: /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@[email protected]
3. Restart your phone and go to beta.swype.com and repeat the instructions to install swype beta.
Worked for me =)

Installation Option 1:

Installation Option 2:
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer (here's an easy way that doesn't require downloading the Android SDK). There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone. This should, though:
1. Download Gmail 4.2 from one of the mirrors above.
2. Rename it to Gmail2.apk.
3. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
4. Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail. Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
5. You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 4 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
6. Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
7. You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 7, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".

Does this pre-release version supercede future Gmail updates?
Thanks for the update. Love the new pinch-to-zoom feature! (BTW, swipe to "archive or delete" always archives for me. Can't figure out how to choose delete, instead.)
Question: Now that I have this pre-release Gmail2.apk installed, does this mean that I won't get any more Production releases of the Gmail app? (After all, I uninstalled the original Gmail app with Titanium Backup before I installed the new Gmail2.apk.) Once Gmail 4.2 is formally released, should I uninstall the Gmail2.apk and re-install the deleted Gmail.apk? (Will that work using TB?)

I read where a lot of people don't like Google Hangouts, and would like to install Google Talk again. There are GTalk files available, but installing them proved to be unsuccessful for some, which prompted me to find out why.
Below is a short tutorial showing how to get Google Talk back back onto your device. I have no doubt others already know how to install GTalk on devices with Hangouts installed, but many don't, and after searching and not seeing a how to, I started this thread.
I've tested this successfully on my rooted T-Mobile M919. I've not tested this method on other devices, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for others.
1) download Google Talk:
http://d-h.st/9Uf
2) go to Titanium Backup
3) find Hangouts system app
4) make a backup of Hangouts
5) un-install Hangouts
6) reboot
7) using your file manager, find the talk.apk & install the package.
8) Enjoy
If you want to install Hangouts again, un-install Google Talk, reboot and
re-install Hangouts using TiBu.

Yeah, that's why -
If your ROM came with Talk, then you can uninstall updates and get back to Talk. Whereas, if your ROM came with Hangouts, then uninstalling update won't work.
(And here, by ROM I mean the ROM istels or GApps package you flashed. )
Just out of curiosity why do you like talk over hangouts? To me hangouts has everything talk had and more, not sure why I would want to go back.

Personally, I've used Talk very little and never tried Hangouts.
The reason I started this 'How to' thread was because I found others that had Hangouts wanted to install Google Talk like they used to have on other devices, but we're unable to install Talk. I looked around and didn't see any clear directions on how to do this, so by trial & error I figured it out and started this thread
With the above being said, I've read many who prefer Talk for its simplicity, in addition to being able to tell who is available for chat if they're on their pc etc. which you're not able to do with Hangouts. I'm sure there are pros & cons for both apps, and sometimes it may just come down to:
- those who are familiar with a service they've used for years (Talk) and figure it works well so why change it.
- If it 'ain't broke, why fix it?'
- the KISS Principle (keep it short & simple)
Others who have used both Talk and Hangouts will be able to offer more specifics
I don't like hangouts either. I have a modified talk apk somewhere on my computer that disables the stupid play store notification to update.

Google should listen to their customers and split Talk from Hangouts. The later seems aimed at teens and people who enjoy selfies.

I've read where a lot of people don't like Google Hangouts, and would like to install Google Talk again.

I see you have a Sprint S4.
I just tested the tutorial again and I was able to install GTalk.
Follow the steps exactly.
If you still fail to install GTalk, as I mentioned in the op, I've tested this on an M919, not other devices. If you've followed the steps exactly, then there appears to be an issue installing GTalk on the Sprint S4.
Thanks a lot

Not sure.
You can always try moving it with TiBu and see what happens.
Have a Nandroid just in case
I am using Samsung Galaxy S3 4.1.2. I never installed the update to GTalk from play store since it was going to replace it. Anyways I got a an OTA update of about 80mb I installed it and I got a software Play Games and my GTalk has been replaced with hangouts. From the app manager menu when I go to the hangout app it only shows the force stop and disable option and not the uninstall option. In the playstore it is showing me that there's an update to it. How can I remove this crap software? I cannot root due to warranty issues, sorry.

The tutorial I posted requires Titanium Backup which requires root.. You also need a file explorer.
