OK, this is downright embarrassing, I have linux experience, I have experience unlocking and flashing almost every HTC winmo device, and right now I seriously need a clue on how to flash my evo with damagecontrol.. i believe i already rooted it properly, i come to this conclusion by typing "id" at the terminal on the device and the uid is root. seriously i feel dumb right now.
well if you are rooted all you need to do is put the rom zip on your memory card and then go into recovery..
from there wipe then flash from zip.
from what ive seen soo far, might i have to rename the damagecontrol rom zip to pc36IMG.zip? and to get to the recovery screen just hold vol down and power?

You don't need to rename it. Yes, that is how you get into recovery. If you're using ClockworkMod recovery, then you should select "Install zip from SD card" and then browse to the ROM, then install it. You might need to wipe your data first for it to work properly. Do a nandroid backup first in case something goes wrong.
ROM Manager... works wonders for noobs like us
ok, Maybe i need to see the whole picture in a verifyable way. Just so i can see this thing from the inside out i have some more questions.
1. How do i verify that I have full root access? I am root when i "id" at console.
2. Im assuming NAND is protected storage onboard the phone.. How do i verify I have it unlocked?
3. How do i know the recovery image has been flashed?
Where these questions come from is the fact that I used jiqqaman's OTA simple root witch i think was a big mistake if i was to understand what is actually happening and being done.. so basically after running OTA simple root i have no idea whats been done, or how it was done...
if you used simply root you should be ok.. i rooted my Evo 1st thing the "old way".. not sure how to check if you are fully rooted. maybe someone else can help there.
1st thing you need to do is find the pc36IMG.zip and delete it of remane it.... i did mine root-pc36IMG.zip
then power off the phone..... when its off hold the power button and volume down ( same time) this should give you a white screen while it reads for the pc36 zip... since you remaned it nothing will happen.... after this you should see recovery.. should be the 2nd one...
volume down to highlight it and hit power buttom
the phone should go into recover mode.... from there you should see wipe etc... wipe data and cache then flash rom from zip
dont remane the rom.... volume keys to navigate..
hope this helps
ok, so far so good, but when i go to flash the new rom, I choose install update from SDcard, it then looks for it and cant find it. The rom is on the root of the SD and it's named "DamageControlv3.1.2-deodexed.zip" also trying the ROM manager pops an error of "an error occured while attempting to run privileged commands."
Alright what you need to do is download ROM manager from the market. Once you do that do the "flash clockworkmod recovery" and then once its done click on "reboot into recovery" then you should be able to install the ROM. Hope this helped

it should find the rom.. where you can volume down to highlight it.
are you unpluged from the computer while you do this?
once rooted.. simply put the rom in your card and unplug the phone to flash.
Ok, The missing link here being the clockwork recovery mod.. Think im back on track here

well once i had rooted my phone (this was over a month ago) via unrevoked it installed superuser for me... so idk. and it was on the stock ROM
Okay I have no clue what you have and don't have. But a few thoughts, make sure you are choosing install zip from sdcard/choose zip from sdcard and not apply sdcard:update.zip. If you are unsure you have a recovery image flashed, in extras on SimpleRoot there is an option to flash recovery. Other than that not too sure what is wrong.
unrevoke will only give you root and not nand unlocked...,you need to run toast method 2 nand unlock.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
When you boot into recovery (while the phone is off hold volume down and power up) check the top of the screen to see what version hboot you have. If you ran simple root and showing version 0.79.0000 then something went wrong. It should say 0.76.2000

I am having the exact same issue. I get the error message from rom manager as well. And I cannot tether. I flashed some other roms that have had too many bugs to count so I am back at "just rooted" nandroid restore and am getting the same errors. What is the next step?

He mentioned that he ran simple root program not unrevoked and simple root will unlock nand. See my post above to verify if your actually rooted. If hboot version is .79 then you have not unlocked nand.
success, it seems once youve already used simpleroot, it's a PITA to get clockwork on it unless you use the option in extras of simpleroot. Success is mine, although i think i have a few more grey hairs for it. Thanks to all those who helped. And to put out words of advice for any other newbs... when they say wipe, they mean cache, userdata AND DELVIC! If you dont you might crap yourself when the phone goes into boot loop! I know i almost lost it. Thanks again everyone!
Hi
I am trying to backup my current rom from my rooted Tmo G2(just for trying because i could get the original rom from the xda wiki.
When i click on the backup rom, my phone reboots and tries to go onto recovery mode, but then i get that black phone and the red exclamation point. after that i cannot do anything.
I have to remove the battery to reboot the phone.
What am i doing wrong here?
thanks
The red exclamation means your still in stock recovery. Reboot the phone, go into ROM Manager and flash the recovery TWICE. I had this same problem and flashing it a second time solved it
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
you are a genius.
I did update the recovery before trying, but this time, i did it twice in a row and that did the trick
thanks again
Same problem but flashing it twice still doesn't fix it?
pretty much what i said above... I have the same exact problem so when i =read this i flashed it twice and still get the red ! arrow when i backup it restarts? any other ideas?
If you get this image, just hit Vol (+) and Power. This will continue you to recovery and you can see whether you are still stock or CW Recovery. I am CW, but I will sometimes get the triangle image.
I think you have to flash twice because of root permissions.
My G2 did not ask me for superuser permission until after it had already downloaded the recovery and was in the process of installing it.
The second time you flash it, ROM manager will already have the superuser permission it needs to successfully install it.
I think that the initial (unsuccessful) installation of recovery is what gets ROM manager to ask for superuser access.
So if you have a way to grant ROM manager su permission before installing, it SHOULD work the first time. I don't really know how to test this theory yet though.
I temp rooted + flashed the recovery part 4 times now, "successful" each time, but on "ROM Backup", the red exclamation mark is the only thing that works..

Do you have Desire HD ? If so, you are in the wrong forum, this is the Vision forum (G2/Desire Z).
If you do have a Vision, then I suspect the problem is that you don't have S-OFF. Temp root is enough to run ROM Manager, but not enough to flash a custom recovery.
ok, thanks that might be it - still ..strange that it detects the recovery software as installed after boot - maybe it's just saving the information and fakes it. ?
yes, I am in wrong forum - just searched for this issue, and it seems like it is just the same.
Thanks.

If you don't have S-OFF, then your recovery partition (plus others) is write-protected in hardware. So the software thinks it's writing to it, but the data is just being held in cache. When you reboot the cache is lost so you see the old image (i.e. stock recovery) again.
Remember to have "USB Debugging" enabled, i've just spend over 2hrs tbefore i've figured it out...
I just perm rooted my G2 using the Visonary + gfree (No ADB) method, and it worked on the 1st try. I am also trying to backup my stock rom, and was wondering about the steps. I have ROM Manager, and I know that I need to flas ClockWorkMod Recovery, But do I do it before I attempt to backup my current ROM, or after? Do I need to erase recovery before flashing ClockWork?

This worked perfectly for me. Thank you!
Firstly, I'd like to apologize if this info is already somewhere on this forum or the web but I've searched endlessly since yesterday trying to find an answer to this.
The gist:
- Rooted evo using unrevoked3
- Stock info: hboot .97; radio 2.15.00.09.01; kernel 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e
build 3.29.651.5; pri version 1.77_003; prl 60670
- Flashed CM6.1.1 rom > tried to flash to a myn rom and had issues flashing going through ROM manager or through bootloader, screen kept freezing on white screen
- Somehow it came to be that the phone would endlessly loop on the bootloader screen and I couldn't get the CM6 rom to load either
- Ended up using a RUU (Supersonic_WWE3.26.651.6_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_NV_1.4044signed)
- Now the hboot is .93 and bootloader shows S-OFF but I dont have root access for some reason. I've tried doing the unrevoked3 process but even after uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and that whole process the unrevoked3 program would not recognize my phone being connected to the computer and in device manager it showed my phone as a portable storage device instead of under android phone like the first time around
I have no idea what to do to regain root so I can flash roms on it again, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Try reloading factory settings then go through root process.
Then flash a ROM using ROM manager (its what I use).
Or just load into bootloader and install .zip from there. Another easy way to flash new ROM.
Sent from an unknown ROM using an unknown device in some scary place.
Can You get into Recovery? If so do a Restore of the CM6, then do a factory reset. Then Flash Myns

It sounds like you don't have a custom recovery installed any longer. I would start your troubleshooting there and see if that helps at all.
Just go into the market download superuser should give u Su. If not then good news is you have s off just find a rooted pc36100.zip like a Sprint lovers version can be found in the universal root method .... if you have s off you can install in unsigned roms .. once that's done install Rom manager after superuser app is installed and flash recovery from the Rom manager first install clockworld if you want then flash ra

Your Evo is fine, so relax.
Try toggling off Signature Verification, then flashing your ROM. Also, I recommend Amon Ra over Clockwork because the newer Clockwork will not flash older ZIP files that don't use the newer install scripts. Did you at least make a Nandroid Backup before attempting any of this?

Flashing to Amon RA recovery will be your best bet. Forget about clockwork. The easiest way to flash to Amon Ra would be to use ROM Manager, and select 'flash alternate recovery'. However, you can't get booted up, so that option won't currently work for you. You can download Amon Ra V2.3 in PC36IMG, from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026. You would then place the PC36IMG on the root of your sd card, either using USB MS toggle in recovery, or by removing your sd card from the phone, and using a card reader to put it in your PC and then dropping the file on it. Then put it back in your phone, and boot to the bootloader. It will detect the PC36IMG.zip, and ask you if you want to update. Hit volume up to say yes. It will then flash the new recovery for you. At that point, I'd try wiping again, flashing Calkulin's Format all.zip (attatched), and then try reflashing a ROM. Remember, don't try restoring any previous nandroids made by Clockwork while your using Amon Ra. It will mess stuff up. Good luck.
honestly im not sure if i did i did a back up in the rom manager.. and tried restoring from there but wont do it.. and i believe the toggle is already off

Alright, I'll tell you how to get back to completely stock and then root all over again. It shouldn't take long at all. This is what you do:
1) Download this ZIP, name it "PC36IMG".zip (no quotes) and put it in the root of your memory card. Meaning if your card shows up on your computer as E:\, then put it in E:\ (no folders).
2) Go into Bootloader mode/hboot (Power + Volume Down), and let it find the zip after a few seconds. It'll ask you if you want to apply it. Hit yes. This will take a while and your phone might reboot a few times.
3) When it's done, you're on an unrooted ROM, but still S-OFF. You can do one of two things:
A) Download the latest Unrevoked and run that all over again (takes like 5 minutes).
B) Download Amon_Ra recovery zip (replace the other PC36IMG.zip) and repeat step 2 to flash it. Then flash whatever you want.
That's it. From then on you can flash whatever you want. What kernel were you trying to use btw? HTC 17?

Okay. You're almost there. Now that you have the PC36IMG on your sd card, power the phone off completely. Then hold power and vol+down so that it will put you into the bootloader. Then just wait a few seconds, and the bootloader will scan and find the PC36IMG, then tell you it found an update, and ask you if you want to update. You wll press volume up to say yes to the update. It will then flash the PC36IMG (whether its just the recovery, or if you're unrooting and rerooting using Fred's method, you flash the same way from the bootloader)
sorry, fred already got to ya!

Just to verify, because it needs to be exact. THe file that you put on your sd card, is named exactly like this, correct ? :: PC36IMG :: It must be capitals. Do Not add a :: .zip :: to the end of it, because the phone does that. If you did label it :: PC36IMG.zip, it would really be PC36IMG.zip.zip, which the bootloader won't recognize. so be sure that it is on main root of your sd card, and named properly, then the bootloader should recognize it.

I wanted to back up my phone so I can have a stock back up but when I went into fast boot and tries to access clockwork I got the android on his back with the red exclamation mark. I'm not sure what happened. I was able to access it once. Maybe a reboot did something. I'm not new to rooting but I'm new to the galaxy line. Thanks so much for any help its appreciated geeatley.

I'm not sure what happened. I was able to access it once. Maybe a reboot did something. I'm not new to rooting but I'm new to the galaxy line. Thanks so much for any help its appreciated geeatley.
I rooted using the dev kit v7.0 I'd that helps any.

Nexus line.
have you tried reflashing cwm recovery via fastboot?
flash CWM via fastboot.
and why do you need a backup of stock? You can always re-flash the stock images to go back to completely stock. Restoring a rooted nandroid backup won't put you back to stock anyways...
OK makes sense. Is there a how to and link to the cwm download? On HTC you used to just download the file rename it pc86img and reboot into fast boot and let it update. Is it the same for the nexus?

Similar, except you put it in a folder on your PC and flash it over USB with the command line.

Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529058
And look for the "Setting up ADB for our device:" then "Obtaining Root Access and Custom Recovery:".
Can you boot into the OS? If you can, download Rom Manager from the Play Store and use that to install CWM Recovery.
Did you delete recovery-from-boot.p from /system? I had to do this to "permanently" install the recovery. My first Samsung phone, my first Nexus device, so not sure if this has been a regular thing ... never had to "permanently" install a recovery up until then. That fixed my issue as my recovery was only sticking once per boot ... was blowing my mind for a couple hours.
Not sure if root via toolkit solves this, but I did a manny root and had to do this. Hope it helps.
edit-
- remount /system in read/write mode (use something like the Root Explorer app or ES File Explorer; both have root modes (check the app's settings) for remounting /system as writable)
- rename the /system/recovery-from-boot.p to /system/recovery-from-boot.p-bak
(note: you could delete it, but renaming is much safer since its easily reversible)

Could also, apparently, rename it. I just reinstalled recovery, deleted, and haven't had a single problem since.
What bleedblue said; now go into fastboot, and reflash cwm.
