4g speeds capped? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been running speed tests around Austin/san Marcos/san Antonio and noticed that 4g only reaches 2.5 megs, whereas in those areas was able to reach anywhere from 5 to 8 meg speeds.
From what I see the test fluttered at 2.5 which is one of the symptoms of a cap.

I live between Austin and San Marcos on 183 and I have gotten up to around 5.5mbps on 4g a couple times. It is always faster at work (near the airport) than at home. Home is usually around 2.5mbps

Not capped

I have got up to 12mbps

It all depends on the server location you run the speed test on. I live in TN, and for some reason when I do a speedtest to Clarvsville, TN I only get around 3mb a sec.
Now, if I set it to test on a server in witchita KS, I get 7-8mbps.
So, try different server locations. I use the speedtest.net app since it seems to actually work correctly now.

first if anybody is going off the results of the speedtest.net app, dont put too much trust in those results, that app isnt very accurate, go to the actual site from the phone...anyways i noticed the same symptoms (capping) but im thinking that sprint is throttling the speeds in certain markets to help off-load the strain which alot of providers do, nothing new, whats disappointing is that what ever they are doing to regulate their speeds seems to affect the coverage, some days i get 1 bar 2Mbps some days i get 2bars 500kpbs and somedays i get 3 bars 1.5Mbps and my area is SATURATED in 4g coverage

Ive ran speed test 50 times in Nashville, and I've only seen 3 mb (even with full bars). Of course, Nashville isnt official yet.

After the 2.2 update I went from average 2-3mbps to 6-7 mbps. I live in San Marcos by the way, so I would think in SA or Austin the speeds would just be a bit faster. My 3g speeds also increased after the update but those have been piss poor since I've had a treo 700wx....
And hello xda, been lurking around since I've had a mogul. Thanks to all those who have contributed to this wonderful place of knowledge.

T-Mobile 3G Users Welcome to HSPA 7.2 Mbps

So anybody who gets T-Mobile 3G now is able to take advantage of The new upgraded HSPA 7.2Mbps 3.5G network. Phone that are able to take advantage of this are the HTC G1, HTC MyTouch, HTC Dash 3G, HTC Touch Pro 2, Samsung Behold 2,and I believe the Blackberry 9700.
Check your speed using you phone browser at www.mobilespeedtest.com
Here is my speed in Miami, Fl.
Must not be in every market. 3g In phoenix seems to top out around 250kbps...at least right now.
Should in all 3G markets. It might be rolling out to different cities throughout the day.
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/01/t-mobile-officially-upgrades-to-hspa-7-2mbps/
Also try doing the 1Mb or larger test.
Yeah you're probably right. I'll just keep checking through the day. These speeds will nearly make the fee for 3g worth it.
Mine is 541kps, is that good? lol Have no idea about phone speeds.
The way ISPs advertise speeds is in bits. When we download is its bytes. So 7.2MBPS should be equilvalent to 7200 / 8 = 900 Kbytes a sec. So 900kbps should be max on our phones which is in between dsl and cable modem speeds. This is of course on the Tmobile Network. The fastest I got on my Tmobile TP2 was 800kbps full 3G bars.
I'm in the Tampa Bay area with full 3g bars. I did the 1MB test and got 717kb's per second. Not sure how to tell if I improved from before tmobile "upgraded" to hspa

Me too, just about the same, which is an upgrade at least 50% from before. I can't wait to try it out at work tomorrow with a full signal!!!
1774kbps in phoenix right now...pretty decent...
I have always used :
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
However the site posted here gives me much better results, so I think I prefer it. Bit odd though.
Ok guys. When you test it out it gives yous the small download test. You need to retest at 2Mb or higher to see the real speed. I used the 7Mb test to test my connection and was consistently getting 6500Kbps - 7000Kbps
I noticed quite a difference between Opera and Opera 10 Beta. What's the most accurate browser to use?
To get a "true" test I use Internet Explorer
Too bad all this speed won't mean **** because our CPU is slow. You will only take advantage of these speeds when you tether to your computer.
Not sure the test is reliable, got so many reading on my end. 700+kps, sometimes 25kps (huh????) sometime 650++, etc.
I've tried 3 times using dslreports simple mobile test. 1MB and got
~700kb
~800kb
~900kb

Sluggish 3G Puerto Rico

Anyone experiencing slow 3G speeds, specially in the San Juan area?
3G speed in sprint here are pretty unstable (Mayaguez-Cabo Rojo) yesterday i got 1.2 Mb dwn and 680 kb up but the is just one time. My average connection home is 200kb and 500kb, it really sucks...hope they work on that
how slow? I know I've also noticed it, getting anywhere from 200kbps to maybe topping out at 600kbps in Bayamon.

I am around the same speed u get. It has been really bad like that lately. My average connection is 200kbs...just like you
I don't now what's happening with the network lately, I used to average over 700kbps not so long ago, maybe 4 months ago...
Have you tried calling Sprint?
yup, and also tried changing the Home Agent addresses

[Q] Anybody else having slower 3g/4g lately?

used to get an average around 3mb download on 4g
but lately I barely get 1mb
3g barely gets .3 mb lately also
Yes, as a matter of fact. About a week or so my 3G speeds plunged as well. Usually I get over 2 Mbps, I just did a speed test now and its .13 Mbps down, .06 Mbps up. My 4G clocked in at 3G speeds, 2.8 Mbps down and .50 Mbps up.
Fortunately, I'm usually on WiFi, but I'm still not pleased.

Sprint getting clogged? I haven't done formal tests but I've been using 4g a lot bc 3g was so slow.....
Maybe they are pushing us towards 4g hard? I'm lost too, anyone else?

Certainly hope not seeing as though they don't have any plans whatsoever to build 4G towers here in this tiny, barely populated, back water town of San Diego, CA.

yeah, it bothers me too that we don't have 4G SD yet..... When I bought my Epic, the Sprint Rep told me that they were planning on rolling out 4G in early Feb here.... but for some reason I really doubt that, seeing that we aren't even on Sprint's proposed list.
Right now there's a 4g outtage thts why 4g is slower.... its national. And when that goes out it put some extra strain on 3g... that's y its slower right now... atlease that's what they keep explaining to us at work...

fc 24 modem internet speed

ok, i live in nj area, about 5 min away from samsung headquarters. i've heard people in CA area go up in speed of internet with fc 24 modem, but for me, the speed has decreased alot. It went from my usual 600-700 kbps, to 100-250 kbps.. less than half the speed. my 4g went from 3.5 mbps, to 5 mbps. so kudos on that.. and my gps works great! I know that the samsung developers come here to research and etc..
can you guys make the internet speed more bearable for people living around nj. i know you guys have two buildings, one is texas and one in nj. it's weird because one time, i had over 1 mbps 3g speed, but with gps issues, but on this one gps is fixed but internet speed is horrible..
do i really have to give up one, in order to use the other? i love all the hard work you guys do, but let's make sure it works great near the samsung headquarters! yay! my rant for today.
oh and also, call quality went up as well. I wasn't able to get a reception at my work place, but i get two bars now.. that was amazing, since no other modems did that.
I have the same experience in NJ.

OK, you must be literally right down the street from where I am right now. I was actually running some speedtests on both of my phones and the past couple of days the speed has been in the toilet! Lol. I was getting 1.5Mbps down on 3g and the past few days I am right where you are. I am off of Patterson Ave. I was shocked because I didn't change anything on my Epic Touch at all. Maybe it is due to other factors.
Now if people are reporting better speeds in SoCal, I can't wait to get back because my speeds are always good there...well at least the 4g speeds are

I noticed the reduction in speeds as well on FC24, 350DL and 100 UL and just to make sure I wasnt losing my mind, I flashed back to EL29 and ran it again. Speeds went back up where they used to be at 1100DL 500UL. So I think I'll stick with that until we all know for sure what the real deal is.

T-Mobile Horrible Download and Upload speeds at home

I just switched over to Tmobile from AT&T and I'm having horrible download and upload speed. I got the phone last night and I have been consistently getting under 1 mbps download and upload. Sometimes speeds will go up to 5 or 6 (for a short time) but never more than that. Is this an issue with my new phone (LG G4) or congested network. I tried a factory reset and many reboots with the same result. Any help would be great. Thanks!!
The last speed test with 15 mbps was while I was at work, so this is only going on at my home.
Edit: I live in the San Francisco/Daly City area
Always check their coverage area

Look at the coverage map again and zoom in to street level. See what it says then
I live in Hayward and have been getting terrible T-Mobile speeds for a few months now. I called T-Mobile and they said they're updating the network in my area, that's it's been going on for a few months and should continue for a few more.
Cleared data cache and did a speed test and it was in the 20 mbps range (this was while on the phone with a T-Mobile rep). Subsequent speed tests after I ended the call were back to my unusually slow speeds. Going to give them another class this weekend.
I used to get great speeds, but now I'm not getting LTE speeds at all.

I also live in SF, coverage here sucks. Even in downtown.
i'm in Abu Dhabi tho, its all about provider/traffic
I'm just outside a Chicago a few miles. 2 miles away would be a Chicago Zip code less than 20 mins from the loop my speeds been crap for almost a year this is why I never upgraded added a data plan just the 1GB free didn't need alot but not going to pay for speeds where I'm only getting 1-3 at night and 0.50 -1 down during the day. The 4g speeds are better not much but they are. I only have 2-3 bars inside full signal outside but that does not matter. I just live in a ****ty spot but it's just not where I live I run into this alot on the go just around the area or a few miles away.
You know what's funny did a speed test around 1am got the same results I posted above just did one now and guess what. 30 down and 4.5 up I know other areas are faster but I can live with that and buy data if the other areas are about the same. I wonder if they finish the upgrade in the Chicago area or maybe mine ? I had to take another look to make sure I wasn't on Wifi but once I seen the upload speed I knew it wasn;t since my ISP is faster then that.
Just did a few test outside 4 or 5 bars in 5 different spots hit 19-47 down and 14-18 up looks to be decent finally.
I recently switched to T-Mobile as well. There is an area in my neighborhood where I can pull down over 70 Mbps!! If I move two or three blocks over towards my house though, it drops down to around 10-15 Mbps. I use WiFi in my house so I'm not that annoyed though.
Are the speeds horrible everywhere in your neighborhood? Are the speeds bad just INSIDE your house? What if you step outside? Remember T-mobile runs on higher frequency and maybe your house blocks the signals.
And now we are back to 1-3 DL tonight. Ha **** does not make sense.

Yes BW 15. Just ****ty they might be doing upgrade's so I don't know. I just know it's always been crap and took a test again now to prove it 0.19 Down and 0.97 Up on LTE. So I don't know what that one test was the other day maybe they were doing some testing ? Because I hit 47 Down and 18 up on the one test. As I mentioned it don't matter much since I have Wifi at the house but I'd be pissed if I was paying any extra for Data and not getting something that's atleast usable. I'm sure my area will catch up in time.
