Hello, how do I set sync intervals and what to sync on my desire?
I don't want contacts nor picasa (just calendar and mail), and I would like to know how often it syncs.
Thank you

settings>accounts and sync>tick auto sync>click on google>tick what you want to be synced>back>disable auto sync.
you cant choose when to sync calendar or picassa or contact, to choose the mail sync frequency go to settings in mail and do it from there,

I was pretty sure I already checked "account and sync"...thanks!
Anyway, I just disabled picasa and contacts.
I forgot to say that I use GoogleMail and not Mail, so it should be push email right? How does this work exactly? I noticed I receive emails within seconds/a minute tops, does it mean I'm always connected? Does it affect battery life a lot?
Thanks again
I cant see that push email is better on battery but will be better on data. Unless push signals the phone over the 2g network then there cant be any savings battery wise. I think all you may see is a data saving with push email. I stand to be corrected!

I must be being thick here - didn't know you could sync Picasa and can't find in Mail Settings how to set a schedule for Google Mail?
dont know about picasa but gmail is a push app so you cant set a check schedule unless you are using gmail as pop3 through a 3rd party app

Hi
I had this app set up with hotmail, ive just got rid of that account and set it up with my Gmail.
Question is this....when running my hotmail i had the background set to black, it has now reverted to white (default) and i cant find the option to change back to black !!
cant find it in the settings when in K-9 or in any setting in my main app menu !!
Where the hell has it gone....maybe im going blind !
Any help !?
In the Accounts menu,
press Menu>Settings>Theme>Dark
Hi
Thanks for the answer...
Sweet.
i had some sort of mental block with pressing the Menu button twice !!!
Thanks Mate
Another question for you guys,
Is K9 a good alternative to the GMail app in terms of speed/push emails and battery usage? Does it use IMAP idle?

Yes, K9 pushes email (IMAP) and polls (POP). I would say I receive my email instantly (Gmail and University accounts). Not too sure about the battery but I think push email would drain the battery less no?
As far as I know push is better, that's good to hear, I just now need to find a comparison of the GMail application and K9 and which is better IMAP or Exchange.

I seem to have a problem that my contacts are not showing when I type their names in the To column. When I do this in the Gmail app, it will give some suggested email addresses Does anyone else have this problem?
Oh, and to answer your question, K-9 is definitely faster (in fact, my Gmail app doesn't seem to push at all? How do I set it to push? Do I have to set it to auto sync? Even then it takes like a minute or so where K-9 takes about 7 seconds)
is this generally deemed to be a better app than the standard one installed for POP email accounts? will give it a try
Is your K9 using activesync or imap?
I believe you need autosync on.

My K9 is using IMAP and it's fine. It pushes my gmail account. I was asking about the Gmail app but you're right, I needed to turn the autosync on. Even then, it doesn't push. It takes about a minute or two for my email to come where it only takes about 7 seconds with K-9. Now I'm concerned about the contacts not showing in K-9 I might have to use Gmail app after all
I would use the GMail app for everything but emails. You can select in options what you want to sync and not sync easily.

I only want my Gmail app to sync with my calendar but not email. How do I do this? I go to Settings>Account & sync>Google but I only have the option to Sync now or Remove account? Can't press menu when I reach this either Am I supposed to manually press sync calendar each time?
Press your gmail account under the list of syncable items.
Anyone migrate to K9 how is it?
I want to try using the Mail app instead of the GMail one, but is it actually possible to disable the GMail app without losing all the other functionality you get from logging into your Google account? - there seems to be a unified log in used by GMaps as well, for example. And when I try to remove the account in settings, it says I have to do a factory reset, this seems bonkers to me.
I couldn't manage to get my Google Mail account to sign into the Mail app...

Turn off sync for Gmail under Settings->Accounts & sync.
You might also want to switch of notifications in the Gmail app too.
Regards,
Dave
Will the phone sync google mail contacts via imap on the mail app or do I need to stick to the gmail app for that?

I think you must have a different version from mine. I have
Settings - Accounts& Sync
Background Data (tickbox)
AutoSync (tickbox)
Manage Accounts
Google
Stocks
Weather
If I tick Google I get a new screen:
Sync calendar
Sync contacts
Sync Google Mail
Sync Picassa Web Albums
(These all just trigger a sync)
At the bottom there are 2 buttons, Sync Now and Remove Account.
If I try remove account a box pops up warning that it will delete all the data, I say OK, then another box that says it can't do it, I have to factory reset because it is required by some applications.
I have been using the Google Mail app since I've had my phone, but today came across a problem - I could not copy & paste a tracking # from an email. I then quickly set up my gmail in the Mail app, & was able to perform this action very easily.
So my question is: has anyone used both apps extensively, & could they give me a quick "pro's & cons"?

Here you go someone has already done that:

The only thing that really annoys me is the fact that your Mail widget does not update the list of emails unless you open the Mail application.
Even if you already updated the email list in your GMail appl.
For example: I receive an email. I get a notification in the notification bar. I open it and it takes me to the Gmail appl (by default). I check my emails, read them, exit the application.
However, my HTCMail Widget (sitting on the desktop) does not show any updates. I have to open the HTCMail manually, sync (again!) and only then can I see the updated list.
Aaaargh!
I've been tempted to move to using the mail application over the gmail one as well.
I think ill setup the mail application with my other gmail account then compare the 2
I much prefer the gmail app. I think its quicker and easier to reply, and it syncs straight away unlike the mail app.
Only downside is the lack of widget, but with the number of apps I have on my homescreens, this isn't an issue.
I always feel it's worth mentioning k9mail at this point, if only because it supports IMAP IDLE.
I'm using CyanogenMod 7.1.0-RC1-buzz. i use an Exchange email/account for my work and gmail for personal. I can see fine the Gmail side of things but the Exchange calendar doesn't show up in the settings so I can't see any events from that account. Also in the Account & sync settings it does not display my exchange account under Manage accounts.
Anyone help me out?

Maybe I can help.
From your PC or normal internet you need to log into your Google account and link your exchange Calender etc etc to your Google account and then from your phone you will be able to choose which accounts to sync/show. I can't give great detail as it was a long time ago I had to do this but for Facebook Calender sync so can't recall exactly what the process is. Hope it helps though? Regards Slymobi.

Thanks for the tip, but that method I'll have to export my Exchange cal and then import it into Gmail - that way I won't be able to edit my events with have to redo the export from exchange etc etc.
Cheers anyway
you may want to check this out

I have searched and read, and most want to sync from gmail to phone..I want the opposite...I have my calendar setup on the SIII with the default calendar app. Im trying to sync this calendar to a new blank gmail calendar. Pretty much just birthdays and other repeat events. the gmail account is checked in the calendar settings. Sync is "ON" for gmail, hit sync now and it will go through with no errors, check google calendar and nothing is there, still blank online.
issue...
I have the same issue... exactly.
Can it really be possible you cant do this?? I dont get why something this simple is not an option, hell they force every other google thing on ya, but NOOO cant sync to google calendar...wonder if this is a google thing or Samsung thing that has the breakdown...and you can sync from google to samsung, just not the other way...
in your settings (when inside your calendar app) why can't you pick your gmail calendar as your default calendar??
Not sure what your asking, gmail is checked in the settings, but there is no gmail calendar app installed there is only s planner stock on the S3...Ive pretty much just given up as nobody has the answer so Im guessing it just cant be done, I dont see any other places to check or change. Gmail calendar can update s planner , but it will not sync the other way.

oh, sorry. i have a calendar app and in those setting you can specify which calendar you wish to sync with.
If you click the calendars button at the top you will see a list of calendars. The first one is probably My Calendar, then My Tasks, then a list of gmail calendars you have. Only the gmail calendars sync with gmail. The sync is bi-directional.
Thanks

Thanks mate - you helped me, big time.
So I don't know if it's just my phone, but push notification of emails in Gmail does not work. There is not option in settings to have Push notification. It only lists never, every 15min, 30 min, hour, 4 hours, once a day... and even when I put it on every 15 minutes, it doesn't notify me when I have an email. I have to manually go in the Email app and refresh the email. My hotmail works great though and it has an option for Push. Did I set up the sync schedule wrong? I have peak schedule at every 15 min, off-peak at every 30 min, peak days selected for every day of the week, peak start time at 6:00am, peak end time at 2:00am and manual for while roaming. This is another concern of mine for this phone. My iphone did a great job of notifying me when emails came in.
Thanks!
Questions:
Under Settings -> Accounts and Sync ... Is sync set as on?
When you click on your gmail account name, it should give you a list of things to sync (mine has: calendar, contacts, gmail)
Is Gmail checked as on?

I can't seem to find what you're talking about. I'm pretty new to android. Would you happen telling me what settings to go to? Device settings? Email settings? I'm using the email app for gmail, not the gmail app since I have more than I email address.
Thanks
You'll have to set up your Gmail as a separate "Exchange ActiveSync" account to get proper Push.

That is so much better. Thank you so much!
Btw, you can use the Gmail app with multiple Gmail accounts. I use it for all of mine, and the email app for non-gmail accounts.
