[Q] FROYO costumaise - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
i have froyo update zip.
If i remove unnecessary apps for app folder (update.zip/system/app/)
delete appsharing.apk
delete Appsharing.odex
so will phone install update or it just will show error ?
If you know, how correctly remove system app ?
( i don't need, beep, twitter, appsharing , teeter, stocks,news, etc)
So it will save lot of place in phone.
Thanks for any help

Which apps can be safely removed without breaking?

Hey there,
I got a HTC Desire with Froyo and the lastest update. Rooted and S-OFF as well.
I was just wondering which apps that came with the Desire standard that I can actually safely remove without breaking the OS/Phone.
Mainly I am concerned about these apps as I don't use them or has a replacement for them:
* Footprints
* Friendstream
* Gmail (I use K9 instead)
* Mail (Again K9 used instead)
* News
* News and Weather
* Peep
* Stocks
* Teeter
Those are the apps I would like to get rid of, and prefebly their widgets too if it possible. But which of them are safe to simply delete without causing random errors and/or breaking of the OS.
Can't remove FriendStream as it's leave the phone in a constant sync loop - it's linked to FB contacts being linked to your phone book

You can if you want but it won't sync. I just unticked it to stop syncing. You can remove a fair few amount of system apps. I got rid of maybe half of them. But what you listed if fine and won't mess around with anything. Just make sure to back them up and then install them if anything goes wrong.
And I will still be able to use market?

Market (Vending.apk) isnt linked to any of the others. You'd know that if you used Cynaogen with Gapps. It's plain Google.
But I don't and im not really into beginning using custom roms just yet as they don't seem stable enough for me just yet .
Now I just need to find a moment of peace to go digging for the correct way to remove apps and then having the time to do a full backup and get started
u can remove teeter n stocks n footprints .. i had long ago didnt face any problems but better to do a nandroid backup n delete watever ud like to your hearts content..n if fails just restore the rom !
Is there a GUI program available to delete those unwanted apk files, or does it have to be done through ADB?
If you're rooted look at Android Commander - still needs adb but it's a GUI. I use it and its easy!

I have rooted, but Android Commander claims it can not get root. So that one is a no go. And Droid Explorer crashes when I try to uninstall, and just reloads the page when I try to delete something

You can use Titanium Backup to delete any system apps you want as long as TB has super user permissions.
I personally delete the following:
stock (dcs apk and dcs service also)
teeter
peep
twitter
If you are using a sense based rom, do not delete any widgets else rosie utility (sense) will keep crashing when you try to use any widgets.
Here is a list compiled by baadnwz (of insertcoin fame)
Safe to remove apks from /system before flashing or after in order to free some space
If you delete those you will loose the HTC Book Reader
EReaderLibrary.apk
EReaderViewer.apk
EReaderWidget.apk
HTC Stock will be gone
com.htc.StockWidget.apk
DCSStock.apk
Stock.apk
HTC Mail will be gone if you don't use exchange or you use k9 mail you can delete
htcmailwidgets.apk
Mail.apk
HTC Radio
com.htc.FMRadioWidget.apk
HtcFMRadio.apk
HTC News reader
HtcGreader.apk
HtcGreaderWidget.apk
HTC Likes
HtcRecommends.apk
HtcRecommendsWidget.apk
HTC Messages - if you use Handcent you can remove default htc message apks - you dont need 2 apks for the same thing
Mms.apk
htcmsgwidgets.apk
Included live wallpapers, if you dont use them or need them you can delete those too
LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
Mode10Wallpapers.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk
Flickr- well if you dont use it for uploading ur pics its safe to delete
Flickr.apk
HTC Sense - if you prefer launcherpro or adw or whatever and dont need htc sense you can delete
Rosie.apk
You can delete any apk from /system that has the word widget into his name if you don't need it, i for one remove all widgets i dont use (90% of widgets present :B). But if you delete them from zip before flashing or via adb after flashing you might encounter "ghosts" widgets in widget list #ff3ccc3 for example will be a widget - and if you select it rosie.apk will crash. Don't say I didn't warn you. Best is to have s-off and uninstall them via titanium backup

What about these?
Gmail.apk
Gmail.odex
Cause I don't use the build in Gmail app either. Unless removing this one breaks all the Google Syncs ?
After going through a long list of stuff to remove I still got weather and News & Weather I would like to get rid of. But what are their proper names?
Doing the installorama I sadly realised that at some point during the process apparently facebook breaks so that it will no longer sync the profile images to people >_<. I very much like that feature, so is there any files I have to avoid for that not to break?
barebone experimenting
First of all, baadnewz, thanks for oa beautiful and well working rom. And I totally respect your (or anyone else's) choice to ignore this post. I'm not expecting anyone to wast their energy on dummies like me. I will keep on searching and trying on my own anyway.
Used leeDroid for a long time but this rom is fantastic.
I am a noob, but not a stupid one. This is the first time I post, after having done my own experiments, testing, searching, reading, learning (I hope) and of course, failing a lot. I'm addicted to deleting apps I don't use.
I work in the area of personal development and I research a lot, so I use my desire as a pure work tool with Docs2go, ezPDF, iReader, PowerAmp, SpringPad, ThinkingSpace, Dolphin HD and TextEdit as my main apps plus helpful apps like AdFree, AutoKiller, BookmarksToSD, BrightnessControl, DesktopVisualizeR, DropBox, LaunchKey, QuickSysInfo, RootExplorer, SetCPU, SuperUser, TitaniumBU, WirelessTether and obviously XDA. Occasionally I download a game but if I'm not using it enough I uninstall it after a back up with Titanium for possible later use.
Other than that I love sense, so I leave the Calendar (+widget), FriendStream (+widget), HTC-Mail (+widget), News (+widget), settingsWidget, WorldClock (-widget), PhotoAlbum (-widget), Messages (-widget), People (-widget).
I also have a few apps like barcodeScan and stuff, but no big space user, except Adobe Flash (do I really need flash if I don't watch film online?).
I think this was all... Yes, everything else is deleted from the zip file, including everything in the resource catalog (wallpaper and stuff) - I only use the wood skin and a wood wallpaper. I deleted some fonts and replaced those with dead files with the same names (stupid maybe). Deleted clock widgets and slideshow. Deleted all media files except for one of each. I also deleted all boot animation zips. I tried to delete libraries that looked like they were connected to apps I deleted, but not anymore. I'm not sure if this was the season, but different functions stopped responding, so I try to not touch lib files and files I don't know. Anyway, all this worked until I tried to do the same with a clean wipe 1.9.5 ? Big problems all the time!? I also tried flashing 1.9.5 on top of 1.9.4. but this worked much as bad. So I'm back on my 1.9.4 restore point...
I love to free up as much memory as possible, at the moment: Internal Storage 117mb, System Storage 77,5mb and Memory 206mb. I believe this is pretty good,or!?
To take some advantage of your latest rom baadnewz, I flashed 2.6.32.29-insertcoin-kernel and lower_voltage_UV_flashable on top of my "barebone" 1.9.4 - donno if this improves anything really, but now everything is working like heavens....
I have tried some kitchens and done some adb, but the kitchen bit feels wrong as long as I don't really understand what I'm doing and what's happening behind the scene..
So, in other words, I have a very stripped down iNsertCoin rom, and I will keep on trying and searching/learning more....
My big question is:
Is different file/apps/scripts/lib and more, dependent on each other, so deleting some will lead to loops and/or errors/fc? Can I edit code/script to support everything I delete?
Is there a place where dummies like me can learn the basics about Android programming, so to be able to understand my question before this one? And YES, I have been looking for this for a long time with no success...
Keep up your brilliant work baadnewz, and thank you so much for all your effort!

[Q] Deleting stock broswer

Is it possible to delete the stock browser with a custom ROM? At the moment if I try and do it from the Manage applications view it doesn't give me the option. But I was wondering if I could manually locate it and delete it without causing any stability issues?
Thanks
You can. ADB from recovery (S-ON), Root explorer (S-OFF).
But I don't know if it causes stability issues - never tried it.
It can be done and has no bearing on anything - just means you can't browse until you get one from the Market
Yes, can confirm that! I'm using Dolphin HD - so removed the stock about an hour ago. No problems.
I can add stock email, news/weather & chat apps to this list - no effect on other apps performing these functions, at least on Oxygen 2.0.1 anyway...
Brilliant, next question. Where is the stock app stored, as I will manually have to remove it.

For me it was system/app/Browser.apk
Removed with Root Explorer.
Sent from my customized HTC Desire using TTP
Ah yeah got to that file using Astro but it's only 684KB, yet when I look in Manage Applications it says that the Internet is 13.76MB.
Unless this includes other data rather than just the Browser, but I'm not so sure?
It surely includes other data (like history, cache etc.)
Probably cache and some settings. In manage applications, clear the data (if that's possible), then remove the .apk
in my opinion the best way to remove system apps is to install Titanium Backup (have the phone rooted), then go to apps in titanium backup then hold your finger on it , the menu appears, slide down and click on remove(using recovery bug)...
I have Titanium Backup but I can't seem to find the stock Browser under the Backup/ Restore tab the only thing I have which is remotely like that is:
[BOOKMARKS] Internet 2.2
Am I looking in the correct place?
Only you can remove it, if you have S-OFFed your phone. And I cant help you with that,I have it deleted already. But should be over there somewhere.
I've rooted my phone using the Unrevoked method and have CWM. But when I've checked the H-Boot screen it says I have S-ON, how do I get it Off?
S-OFF tutorial
Also, I forgot to mention, you can remove files via ADB from CWM/AmonRA. Guide here.
Thanks for this I think I'm going to try the ADB method as it looks a little easier. Plus I did read someone if you remove S-Off it can be permanent and effect warranty.

Apps are stored in /system/apps (may vary with rom?). There are a couple of options:
Titanium backup is free from market and will permanently remove any apps - you need root and s-off for this. Root explorer can be used for the same - just delete the .apk file.
You can also do it via cmd prompt and adb, look for detailed threads about this in these forums!
OK I now have S-Off on my phone and its also now obviously rooted but I still cannot delete my stock browser. I've tried using Titanium Backup but I can't locate it to delete it, I've also tried Root Explorer but when I try to delete the Browser.apk it comes up with the following message:
Browser.apk cannot be deleted because the file system is read only.
Also I've wiped data and deleted many of the stock HTC apps & widgets but I don't seem to be freeing up much if any space. My Low on Space indicator has been on throughout even though I have got rid of the following:
Footprints,
Footprints Widget,
Friend Stream,
Friend Stream Widget,
Music,
Music Widget,
News and Weather,
Peep,
Photo Widget,
Stocks,
Stocks Widget,
Teeter,
Twitter Widget,
Weather Widget.
Does it actually free up much space un-installing these?
Can anyone please help with these issues?
Root explorer fix
Hi
The reason Root Explorer comes with that error is because the system folder is mounted ass read only (you can't edit anything on it)
Fix:
1. Browse to system/app
2. In the upper right corner there is a mount R/W button, press it
3. Now you can read and write and therefore also delete the browser.apk
4. Remember to mount as R/O when done
It doesn't free up space as they are located in /system and regular apps are installed in /data.

[Q] remove system apps..

Hi there...i have an A100 USA version but i'm livin' in Italy.
I've rooted the device, so, i was wondering how to remove System Apps...
I've removed succesfully Aupeo, but when i'm trying to do the same with nemo Player ('i'm using Mobo player), nothing happen... the system put it again at his place...
is a problem of the File Browser?
I moved Aupeo with File manager HD
But i'm trying to remove nemo with File Expert...
in both cases, i changed file permissions...
Any idea?
PS:
I would like to do the same with social, reading etc. hub by Acer....but i cannot find in apps folders... someone knows where they are located?
An app like System App Uninstaller, or Titanium Backup can delete system apps. Allegedly deleting system apps may interfere with our ability to get OTA updates (ICS...) so do so at your own risk.

[Q] duplicate provider authority problem Maps app

Hi ,
I tried to replace old pre GoogleMaps and youtube apps with the newest from market , not only update..
I mean wanted to stay updated even after hard Reset .
I updated maps and youtube apps from market.
From here starts the problem story..
1- Rom Toolbox creates backups of installed apps in folder (App_Manager)
I don't know it like titanium backup or not !!
2- I copied 2 apps from backup folder .. but their names are different from system apps (Maps.apk - com.google.maps)
3- I pasted them in (System/app)
and deleted system (youtube.apk - Maps.apk) using ES Explorer
and renamed backuped apps to (youtube.apk - Maps.apk)
4- back to apps I found youtube icon but with old backuped name (com.google.youtube) .. and it worked
5- maps also has old name but no maps icon !!
found 3 green android icons .. Navigation - Maps - don't remember the third
6- tried to open one ..was navigation..opened but didn't work
tried to open Maps from it .. but force close to maps .. followed by force close to navigation
tried to open maps from menu but always force close and never opened !!!
7- I decided to delete them and install them - not update - from market from start..then move them to system folder .
I deleted both .. tried to install from market
and Message appeared .. duplicate provider authority
8- tried to search to solve problem and read about packages.xml
in data/system
and deleting phrases containing maps
I did it
but still no good result
------------------
I know that was so stupid to do especially I'm NOOB !!
Please help .. tell me what to do
Now I have No Maps No youtube
I'm Rooted with stock Rom
Remove them completly from system/app folder then install titanium backup now download them fresh from the market.
Once installed, open titanium then look for the apps you downloaded eg maps.
Long press it and a menu pops up, click convert to system app.
Follow the same procedure for all apps you want to update or if you update an app look in titanium and it will show (updated) next to it, long press and.select integrate update into rom.
thanks
Thank you Intel007
yesterday, I left phone alone after i failed
it must felt it's wrong and when i came back to it
it apologized to me - yes phone -
its apologize was "I'll never do this again,I'm sorry "
and every thing went perfectly !!!
I downloaded maps and youtube from market ..and it smoothly downloaded and also installed
even they went to sd card without i move them !!!
I moved them back to internal memory
and used ES explorer to rename and move from data/app to system/app
I restarted phone
and....
Every thing was just perfect
Ok I accept your apologize my dear phone, Don't repeat this again hahahaha

Xperia M [4.12] Album App setting Wallpaper error.

Hello !
I recently rooted my Xperia M (4.1.2, 15.1.B.0.2, SuperSU) and cleaned out a few system apps I didn't want (mainly anything linked to social media stuff).
Unfortunately, I tried deleting the Album app to use one I find better, but it seems the system needs it to set wallpapers.
I re-installed it as a normal app (on the internal storage).
The problem :
Wenever the system tries to access the resizing tool (wallpapers and a few things in apps I use), I get a "com.android.album has stopped working" or "Album has stopped working" message. I looked around, and I believe it is because I deleted the "SemcPhotoEditor.apk", or because Album is no longer a system app.
What I tried :
I tried using a file manager (Root Explorer) to copy SemcPhotoEditor.apk to the /system/app/ folder, but it fails and the phone immediately reboots (same thing with Root Browser).
On top of that, I tried installing a SemcPhotoEditor.apk I got from someone's clean system dump, but it can't read it correctly.
Any Help ?
Could anyone help me figure out how to repair my Album app (I tried re-installing it), or help me install the SemcPhotoEditor.apk ?
PS : sorry for the title, I forgot a "."...
