Hidden SSID - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to connect to my hidden home network ssid and I'm having problems. I have a D-LINK 655 and if I have the ssid visible I have no problems connecting the EVO. When I turn it to invisible my EVO disconnects from the network. Anyone have any ideas on this.

Mods feel free to delete this, I fixed the problem.

How did you fix it?
I am having the same problem I can not get the EVO to see a hidden SSID how?

Manually input the ssid into the WiFi settings.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Here's how
You have to enter the ssid manually - settings - wifi & networks - wifi settings - Add wifi network - [enter network ssid] & [passprhrase]

Still not working
I still cannot get it to see hidden networks with WPA2 encryption. Any more ideas? Hidden Wifi enabler does not work either thanks

Have you tried to restart your router?

i believe this has always been an issue when connecting to a hidden network using WPA/WPA2 with android and i don't recall ever reading if this has been fixed in Froyo.

Still not working
I am at work on the work router I do not have control of the router. I just wish they would fix it cause the EVO is awesome but I wish I could get WIFI. Any other Ideas? Thanks

Necro-bump
I have this same problem. Hidden SSID, WPA2-PSK & AES network refuses to allow me to connect. I can connect with my laptop no problem and my buddies Droid X works as well.
No matter what combo of ROM/Kernel I use the story is the same. It'll hang at "Obtaining IP." I've even tried to manually assign myself an IP. Anybody fixed this yet?

I hate to bump this but I am having this issue as well. Never had the issue with samsungs android phones. Is this a known issue with the evo????

It's only a simple fix if you own the access point. I can't connect to my work access point with my G2 running either Froyo or Gingerbread. I'd like to get a tablet, but I'm hesitant to do so if this is still a problem with Honeycomb. Does anyone know if this has been fixed in Android?

That isn't a fix, that's a workaround. And one that is unnecessary if things are working as they should.

Agree. I don't have a Honeycomb tab, but do want one and it would be nice to know if this works.

I figured out that this wasn't the problem I was having on my network. I thought the network was hidden because it wasn't showing up on my phone. It was actually not hidden, but it was only broadcasting on 5 Ghz (not 2.4 Ghz), so my phone couldn't see it.
I bought a Galaxy Tab 10.1, and it connects just fine. From what I read, though, the ASUS Transformer wouldn't have worked because it doesn't do 5 Ghz wi-fi.

Is anyone able to get android-wifi-tether to work on LG2?

I just rooted (teamepic cwm+root.zip) and installed the android wifi tether. Wifi tether is not working. I went to the QBKing thread in development, and see that others are having similar wifi tether problems. Does anyone have wifi tether working on an LG2 release? I am considering flashing back to a stock LF9 if sprint managed to bork the wifi tether with their latest release.

After my laptop connects to the tether, I can't actually get out to the internet. It's like the NAT is not working. checking the IP stack on my laptop, I am getting the right ip address, gatway, etc assigned. Wifi tether shows the laptop connected. But I can't do anything.
I followed the QBKING video step by step (except using a different password for encryption). I have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (LTE/CDMA) profile selected. I've tried some others in desperation, but none are working.
I think I'll try uninstall/reinstall of wifi tether, or maybe just use foxfi now that i am rooted.
go to settings of the wifi tether app if you havent already and set it to enable the security settings so that youll need a password on any device you enable to use your phones internet signal and that should work because i was having that problem with the wifi tether app on my evo 3d and when i enabled security protection that allowed additional devices to connect to the internet. on my galaxy s3 i havent had any problems like that cause i intiially started with this method and ive been up and running just fine and im in houston so it seems the 4g lte is up and running here cause my phone shows 4g at the top for signal and my pages load up on the phones web searches faster than when its connected to my uverse wireless modem. hope this helps you man.

Ok if you didn't already, try gnex gsm instead. Also does the tether app show any numbers moving or do they stay at 0.0. Make sure your version of the tether app is up to date as well. And disable wake lock is unchecked in settings
I had the same issues as the op. With wireless tether change profile to galaxy nexus gsm not cdma and you must use access control. Then you should PROFIT......

Has anyone had a chance to try this? Did it fix the intermittent connection problems? I am going to try it later, because wifi tether is still not working for me (LG8) using Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE and with the access control disabled. I am just curious to see if anyone has this working as using the GSM profile is counter-intuitive for Sprint.

I tried it and the wifi tether still doesn't work. Half the time I start it, it requests Superuser and "starts" but there is no SSID being broadcast and I don't think the wifi radio is actually turned on. Every once in a while, it will broadcast the SSID, and I can connect but the up/down data stay at 0.00kb. Other times, I can connect, and I see the up/down data slowly incrementing, but I can't actually get out to the internet (or FTP, or telnet or....).
I guess I'm just fooked until foxfi or android wifi tether for root actually release a specifically-supported SGS3 version of their apps.
My issues were i could see the ap but not fully connect or allow internet access. Make sure your using access control it will not work with out it. Also make sure you have routing fix checked and use auto not ad hoc.

WIFI connection issue

I am unable to connect to my WIFI at home, I have tried everything I can think of, which is quite a bit. All I get is obtaining IP loop and then says poor signal and quits trying, (I have tried sitting right next to the router) My router shows that DHCP has handed the phone an IP, but the phone does not seem to take.
Tried adding a network manually
Tried advanced settings, and giving a static IP address, I can get it to show its connected but can not get any internet, data etc.
Tried the *#0011#
Tried a master reset, and tried to connect to wifi before installing anything.
I am at a loss, would not be a big deal but the 4G at home is sketchy, cuts in and out a bunch, plus for what I paid for the phone the wifi should at least work.
Tmobile tech support is not much help, neither is Samsungs.
Any help is appreciated!

Yes it connects to my work wifi.
WPA/WPA2
Its a Belkin router, not sure of the model off the top of my head, I know its somewhat newer cause it has the N protocol.
I would really suspect the router if I did not have other devices that work fine on the network, 2 kindle fires, 3 laptops, 1 S,Captive, Wii, and Xbox, and my Vibrant worked fine till I got this phone. Not everything is on at the same time, but I am sure that would not matter cause I have never had an issue when it all was connected at the same time.
Have you flashed a kernel lately? I have issues connecting to my router flashing some kernels. Just a thought.

same issue
I have the same issue, but my Wifi wont connect to any network and actually show throughput if I set the wifi power **** to off with the *#0011# menu.
I was stuck on stock roms because akop based (cmx) dont have that service menu.
I recently flashed to Uvalh2 stock rooted and the wifi works as it should for the 1st time ever. I flashed back to ulvem and it needs the 0011 **** again...
my home router is also a belkin with b/g/n, but my wifi never worked anywhere without the menu trick;
ANY help to troubleshoot if this is radio/kernel/rom based or what setting the menu changes so we can possibly set it manually in terminal..
thanks for this thread
Best I can think of real quick is to try different kernels and modems. (Check out the Modem Flasher in dev, makes it really easy)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Just hate the fact I have to try other kernels and modems after paying an arm and a leg for this phone, should not have to.
And seeing I have never done that before it makes me heisatate even more, I am sure I can do it, just that whole what it.
I just dont get why if I give the phone a static IP then it will connect, but can not move data, I went to the *#0011# and was able to ping the router and laptop on the network etc. I am at a loss
Anyone have any other suggestions on this issue???

[Q] Why does Wi-Fi hotspot need to periodically be restarted?

I'm finding that the Wi-Fi hotspot / tethering feature on my Galaxy Nexus (running stock Jelly Bean 4.1.2) needs to periodically be restarted to work properly: it will work for a while, but at a certain point, connected computers (and I've tried this with multiple PCs of different brands) will start giving me "limited access" messages and not be able to pull any data from the connection. The only way I've found to reliably get the PC connected again is to tap on "Set up Wi-Fi hotspot" on the Android, and then tap "Save" (without changing anything), which seems to restart the Hotspot connection, after which everything is fine for a while.
Are others seeing this issue? (A similar problem is reported here.) Why would this be happening? And what could I do about it?
Thanks!

No internet access after switching between Asus RT-AC66U and data

I have no internet access on one certain wifi router (asus rt-ac66u), with my n7 lte, although I can access the internet on other routers and through the dataa connection, I can access my router management though. I did a factory reset of the router and that solved the problem temporarily but the problem came back. Just switching router/tablet on/off doesn't solve the problem

If flashing the latest firmware doesn't help. You can try and change the wireless mode of your router. Log into mgmt. Navigate to your wireless settings, change "wireless mode" from "auto" to "N Only."
It's worth a try. What that will do is force N band only, whereas on auto when a g/b band connects the router switches to b/g mode, and that might mess with the Nexus. If the problem you encountered was fine with a factory reset temporarily, all it would take would be a "g or b" band device to log on to kill your n band and dumb down to g/b band.
It's not a bad idea if you don't have any b/g devices to turn off 'auto' anyways. The jury is still out on whether or not it actually benefits an all "N" environment, but it sure as hell won't be switching to G or B on you.
Those routers had issues with their early versions of firmware. They might have straightened it out by now. Upgrade it!

Try changing the WIFI channel used in your router. My nexus 10 had issues on certain channels especially on 5GHZ.
You may also have a Wifi region setting somewhere on your nexus. I remember seeing it before but can't find it right now. The region basically locks your nexus to (possibly) the wrong channels. IE. Not all euro channels work with american wifi channels

Let's divide the problem into smaller pieces - is this an N7 LTE problem or ASUS router problem?
Get another router (I use the Asus RT-N66U) and test if it works with the N7 LTE. If it does, then it's your' router.
If it does NOT work wit hth eN7 LTE, then it's your N7 LTE probably have a bad chip.
I installed the kitkat factory images and the problem still persists :crying:

Can someone please help me with DNS?

I had many phones and I had many troubles with DNS. Now it is the G4. It seems DNS just stops working sometimes. YouTube just cuts, webpages cannot resolve DNS address. I have to disable WiFi and then enable again to get webpages/internet to work again. When DNS stops working the phones works hard and gets hot and drains battery like hell. I had this problem with Samsung phones too.
It's not my router or internet connection because everything else works (my computers and servers) and I have changes routers many times.
Is this android? WiFi drivers? As i said, it cannot be my network. I use google DNS 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4. I have also tried static IP/DNS address.
This I had with others phones too. Never apple phones though... So it seems like an android problem? Of course I have tried resetting my phone and reinstalling.
Anyone with any useful tips or solutions here? Getting tired of this problem...

By dhcp. I also used static dns.
Why are you using static DNS? Are you by any chance using a DNS to bypass geolocation? Are any other devices connected to the WiFi having the same issues? This looks a little bit like an issue that is independent of the G4. When you are setting up a static DNS, it may conflict with the other settings. I am using the DNS from the Internet provider, I am not touching any settings for WiFi and I never had issues unless the Internet connection itself had issues (like last week with the DDoS attack from the IoT devices). Maybe it is an issue with your Internet provider.

I use dhcp, but have tried with static. The only thing that hasn't changed is my provider, but as I said, everything else is working except my g4. Same with my Samsung s5, note 3.
There is a "Network settings reset" in Settings -> Backup & reset. Try it. If you can update to a newer version, do it, it will clear Dalvik Cache. I think there is something wrong with one of the system apps. If your G4 is rooted, then just clear Dalvik Cache from TWRP. I would also delete the WiFi AP and reconnect. Did you check the router for the IP it gives the G4? Maybe there is a conflict with another device, if you're setting IPs using MAC address.

Tried all that. Reinstalled the phone several times by the way.
My router gives IP adresses to all my devies and thats a lot og devices. If there is a conflict you know right away and more the other devices who is conflicting will also not work. Every other device works except my G4 UNTIL i disable wifi and then enable it, like within 5 second. Just disable and enable wifi and everything is back to normal.

Never fixed the issues with those two phones... just had to live with it disabling wifi and enabling again... several times a day. Sometimes after a short while and sometimes after a longer time.
Then I would say that it is not a problem with the phone, maybe with Android. What exact model is the router?

Yeah it has to be a problem with android VS my internet router perhaps. It's weird because I've been through jellybean -> marshmallow.. My internet provider router is Norwegian one (inteno something).
My network:
internet -> internet provider router (inteno) -> ASUS RT-AC68U as access point -> phone.
IP adresses is recieved by the inteno router.
So maybe my phones don't like the internet provider router. Will have to test more when I get fiber internet with a brand new router.
