[Q] Desire connect to ad hoc wifi hotspot - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using Desire and 2.2 version, but this version still cannot connect to ad hoc network for internet.
Is this any easy way to solve this problem?
Thanks all......

At the moment my desire is connected to a usb dongle wifi, because my wifi router is broken. First i've tried to make an adhoc network with my home computer but I failed. Then I installed tue usb wifi adaptor's software and it has an option to turn it into an access point and I've connected my desire to it.
I'm not sure if I'm helping you with this information, but I wanted to share my experience.

Hi Spritable, can you please elaborate or supply a link to this software? Googling it didn't bring up anything relevant. Thanks.

My USB wifi dongle is a RaLink model and I've downloaded the driver/application from the company's website.

so desires or any android phone on 2.2 can't connect to an iphone that is running ad hoc wifi?

I tryed this yesterday.
PHP:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
and it works fine for my Desire with DeFrost 2.9a. I can connect to my AdHoc WEP Lan created with "Connectify" on my PC.
so, dont give up. seems like a solution is coming...
bye

Download connectify on the pc!

tethering

i had my desire hooked upto my pc via usb and had 3g and wifi enabled, connected to the internet fine. but im not sure on tmobiles tethering policy i.e extra charges etc so decided to turn 3g off and use wifi. i.e wifi to the phone and share to the pc via usb. no dice, wont work! why wont it let me share my wifi which is alot faster than the 3g it will let me share?
also will i incur any fees from tmobile?

I had the problem with Win 7 64bit. The drivers of tether just wouldn't install. I solved it by using Easytether which can be found in the market.
You have to install the app on your Desire and you also need to install a small program om your pc/laptop but once installed on the Desire the app itself tells you what to do and when and where to download the stuff for your pc. Piece of cake
Does your laptop not have wifi?!

Can you do WiFi tethering on the Desire? That would be cool...
I doubt you can...because it seems pointless. I can't imagine a device running an OS that accepts USB modems that doesn't itself have Wifi built in unless it's a very old laptop, and then what OS are you running?

Try the app PdaNet, it lets you share your internet (3G/H) via USB or Bluetooth
yes both my macbook and desktop have wifi. i was curious as to why the phone would rather use a slow 3g connection to share as opposed to wifi if it is available.

There is a program available so you can use wifi on your laptop with the wifi on the phone. But to use that program you need root access so it won't work on the Desire (yet).

Desire to use PC's internet

Is there anyway I can have my desire use my PC's internet when it is connected via usb?
At this stage I dont have wifi at work and cant use that method.
Essentially I want to reverse the direction of tethering when the phone is connected to my computer.
Thanks, Dean
Unfortunately, reverse tethering or connecting the phone through computer's Internet connection (through an ad hoc wifi) is not possible, which is quite annoying. It would be nice if this type of feature, although highly unlikely, could be incorporated an upcoming ROM update for example.
That is annoying, especially since I could do this with my old WM - although thanks for the reply and info.
I wonder if it could be done through an app perhaps.
Cheers, Dean

Yes it's extremely annoying. I had this on my HD and HD2, but i really don't know why HTC could not incorporate this with the Desire. Afterall, it's a desirable (excuse pun) feature.
it has nothing to do with your phone, since it all depends on the host computer. On mac: you can do it easily by sharing your internet connection in system preferences.

maybe i misunderstood you, but its perfectly possible to make an adhoc wifi network, and connect to the internet on your desire

it has everything to do with your phone. If the phone has no interface for it, it won't work.
Can't say whether it works or not, just saying that it does not depend solely on your computer

Thanks

If your computer has a wifi card (laptops usually do, desktops don't) you can create a local network and connect your desire to it.
No idea if it's possible over a wire
You don't need to create an ad-hoc network, just download connectify and use it as a hotspot on your laptop, then connect the Desire to the hotspot you just created and that's it.

Ahh that is handy!
Thanks for the tip
I created an adhoc network following this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx
The host laptop itself can see the adhoc network, but desire cannot.
Any ideas?
Maybe I'm wrong but AFAIK Desire can't 'see' ad-hoc networks, only access points. You can get internet from PC, but only using Connectify under Windows 7 or by using advanced magic under Linux.
Am I right or something has changed lately?
BTW: does anybody share internet from Linux? Any suggestions?
As far as i know, you can only see an ad-hoc network if you have the desire rooted and change some files somewhere (can't remember which ones...), either way the next best thing is to use some kind of software that creates an Wifi Access Point.
I don't get it: why would you want to connect to the internet via your PC instead of directly connecting to your WiFi router ?
Maybe when you only have a LAN-connection?
Or Maybe when your in Work and only have a Lan Setup
and want to access / download things on your phone,
Reverse USB tethering would be AMAZING!!!!!

Stupid me, just hadn't realized that still not everyone has a WiFi capable router nowadays...
The problem with ad-hoc internet sharing is that your host PC still needs a WiFi connection. You can't use internet through USB. I've tried it yesterday at work (yes, for the Froyo update ), but no succes.
Having a smartphone in a country with high mobile data costs is like having a Ferrari to do your local grocery shopping Fortunately I'll have unlimited mobile internet next week. So I can finally use my Desire as intended.

Desire can't see ad-hoc wifi network!

I've just set up an ad-hoc wifi network using my laptop, but it seems that desire can't see it. My other laptop, and ipod touch are connecting just fine.
Is there any way to fix this??

Yes, wait for the Froyo update.
I 'm waiting for this to use my KS20 as a hot-spot

I have froyo rom installed...it should work...i guess ...
AFAIK no Android device can see an ad-hoc network. (not without modifications / root that is). I admit I have no idea if Froyo solves this problem.

You _did_ something wrong, because Connectify is the way I successfully connect my Desire to internet.
Have a look at:

Hm...don't know. There's nothing to do wrong . It's very easy to configure. I've tried it on two laptops. Desire is just hanging on obtaining ip adress, and another laptop conects just fine but with no internet access...

Your windows firewall is blocking the connection process. Either turn off the firewall or set a exception, if you have a complete antivirus solution with firewall its the same thing.
Also go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections (on win 7) > right click on your internet connection > Proprieties > Sharing > Check the "Allow other network users to connect through this computers intenet connection" > in the drop down list select the Wirless Network Connection made by Connectify
No desire does not see ad hoc connections, i think some people on here are not understanding what the OP means.
He wants to share his interner from laptop to desire so the desire can go online.
I have tired this with a nokia phone in ad hoc mode (n900) and desire would not see SSID.
Not sure if froyo will, i had froyo installed but didnt test that.
Android does not see ad-hoc networks by default, but it can be configured that way.
I did it with this guide: hxxp://modmymobile.com/forums/491-jailbreak-root-access/544146-connect-g1-ad-hoc-network-solved.html (replace xx with tt) wich is similar as the above mentioned.
I had some problems with the wpa_supplicant.conf file, but this is how it looks now:
Code:
ctrl_interface=tiwlan0
update_config=1
network={
ssid="MarcsAndroid"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=NONE
mode=1
}
network={
ssid="Marcsnet"
scan_ssid=1
psk="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
proto=WPA
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
group=CCMP TKIP
priority=1
}
I'm using wifi thethering on my Desire and have configured my old G1 so that is sees the Desire, can connect to it, and share its internet. But most importantly, I use the app WiFi-keyboard, so I can use my G1 qwerty on my Desire

[Q] annoying problem :(

ok my parents wont get wireless networking in our house anytime soon so im stuck with wired connections. to my laptop. that means im trying to create an adhoc network with my win7 laptop. and then i realised android doesnt support adhoc networks yet so i rooted it and got this app : http://code.google.com/p/desire-adhoc/
ok so im now connnected to and adhoc and ive sent internet sharing. however, my computer won't send packets to my phone, so i cant access the internet. it worked once then it stopped working. i refresh 'google.com' and it just stays stuck at like 10% of the status bar then says that the webpage is not available...
any idea how i can solve this???? thanks in advance

Google for an app called "Connectify". That should work. I don't know how far it supports Windows XP (The page says it does support XP, but for Ad Hoc mode only), but I guess it shouldn't hurt to give it a try.
