I have a quick question about WiFi tether. I have tether working with netarchy's "Burnt Droid" ROM, and my computer connects. Near me, there are about 7 other WiFi networks being used. (Most WPA encrypted, some WEP). Almost all, except my home network, are on channel 6. I have my home network on channel 11 there are 2 others here on channel 1. I tried to change the channel on my EVO to broadcast on Channel 11 also. In the EVO, it says it is broadcasting on channel 11, but when I run "inSSIDer" on my laptop, it still shows my phone broadcasting on channel 6. I have tried to reboot the phone after changing channels, and have tried to reinstall binaries.
What do I have to do to change the broadcast channel in the Tether app?
Menu, settings, change channel. Can be done once the app is lunch.
BTW hope u were/are referring to the wireless tether app and not WiFi tether.

Ok, what is the difference between wireless tether app and wifi tether? I am using the "Android Wifi Tether 2.0.5 pre 4" I have heard bad results from pre 6, and pre 7 does not broadcast. (Not found with laptop, OR running inSSIDer app). Pre 4 works perfect for me, is seen by my laptop and connects both unsecured and secured.
I should have given more details in my original question. The steps I have taken are: Open Wifi tether app, Click Menu, Click settings, select Change Channel... From there, I selected channel 11. I have tried changing the channel both with the Wifi started and while stopped, with no difference in results.
My laptop still can see the "Android Tether" and connects.
I go into "inSSIDer" which is an app that will detect all the Wireless networks in your area, the signal strength, type of encryption, AND broadcast channel. The app shows my EVO as broadcasting on channel 6. REGARDLESS of what channel I select in settings, it will still show as broadcasting on channel 6. I have tried to re-install binaries, re-start the tether app, reboot the phone, nothing works.
Yes, I know i can just use channel 6 since it works, but with all the other "traffic" on the channel, it would be preferable to change to a less busy channel.
Ok we are referring to the same app the app name is wireless tether, peps just call it WiFi tether. But if u change it to Chan 11 and u stop and restart it should be on Chan 11. The other app may be reading the Chan incorrectly. Try a different app to see if it reads it. If the next app reads it as Chan 6 then it's an issue with wireless tether aka WiFi tether.
Try that and you would def.ly narrow down the possibilities.

I just tried it through 2 other WiFi channel scanners. They all keep showing my EVO as broadcasting on channel 6.
I have tried changing the channel both while tethered, and when tether was off. I have tried re-installing the binaries after a channel change, I have force closed and restarted the tether app, I have rebooted the phone...
Looks like even though the option is shown in the app, it is locked into channel 6.
Someone else has already submitted this as a bug:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=495
The new version, pre 8, now allows you to change channels.
I have a question as well, (noob here, so forgive me if i sound painfully ignorant lol) but my wifi tether isnt broadcasting. I have a samsung captivate(rooted through Unleash The Beast) running 2.1. It says wifi started but my computer cant see it. It has run before using the same firmware, so i cant figure it out. Iv reinstalled it multiple times. Also, on the bottom when i start it it stays at 0.0kb downloaded and 0.0kb uploaded, and im pretty sure its supposed to say at least 0.4 or 0.3 when you start it. Any suggestions?
I am having the same issue with my Epic 4g after root I cant get the wifi tether to work. It just doesnt broadcast.
I can see my braodcast from the evo but my laptop will not configre an IP connection. What is also weird is that my evo will not work with my home wifi as it also does not configure its IP address.

I've got an EVO running CM6 stable with android-wireless-tether (pre7). I am able to pair/connect to my home PC by setting up a bluetooth PAN in Windows 7. I right click on my device, choose "Connect > Access Point" and it says "Connection Successful". The only thing I get now is "Identifying..." until I am stuck with the good ol' 169.xx... IP address.
I checked the log for the wireless tether app, and it shows:
Enabling NAT rules... done
Enabling IP forwarding... done
Tethering now running... done
error: SIOCSIFFLAGS (Cannot assign requested address)
I've done a little research on the error and tried a few suggestions (rebuild binary/config files, changing the default LAN IP in awt settings) to no avail.
I also tried disabling WiFi and just attempting to share the 3G connection which still isn't working out (same error). Can anyone help me out with this one? I've also tried awt pre8 with the same results.
I had same setup and problem. Started the supper user app and quit app. Powered down phone restarted phone. After restart WiFi tether worked fine. Don't know why .

Just turn on wireless teather and the go to access conections fine androidap and connect to that. Why do you have to use blue tooth am I missing something? Wireless teather is in the settings with CM6 so you dont need an extra app for teather?
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried opening/closing SU app and rebooting, got the same result.
The reason why I am doing it this way is because I have a PC with only a network card (not WiFi). It's about 30/40 ft. from my router. Rather than buying a wireless card or some cable, I'm connecting via bluetooth and sharing my phones WiFi connection.
I understand if I had a WiFi adapter I could just use the built in Hotspot feature, but if I had WiFi, I would rather connect directly to the router.
I'm definitely interested in this too. At work, we have a no-wireless router policy, and I don't really feel like firing it up and have a guy holding a Fluke wireless network analyzer come and find me.
Bluetooth is alright for what I need. Seems to almost be a kernel issue or something. Worked *perfectly* with my N1, even with pre8. The EVO with CM6 stable isnt working. Just as a note, the wifi portion works correctly.
Actually let me rephrase : The bluetooth section does work, I believe there might be an issue related to the dnsmasq dhcp server not being able to serve IPs. The 'Upload' section of the information panel changes, the Green Download section stays 0.00. The client never receives an IP address, and thats about it.
Logcat didnt really show me much of anything critical error-wise, I'm really hoping that I can downgrade/upgrade a kernel in order to support whatever hardware changes there were between the N1 and the EVO.
I checked the wireless router wifi mode, and it no longer works either. 'Started with errors' is what I get now when in the wifi mode. The built-android wireless tether works fine, but I either wish I could hide the ESSID or have a bluetooth option available.
It *seems* related to the kernel, but logcat doesnt mention anything about not being able to load a module, and the wifi-tether app doesnt have a txt log, or does it?
I'm looking for some help with connecting to this app. I've got my server setup correct because it works when i connect via Wifi in my home but when i try to use it over my 3G network it will NOT connect at all...
Any Ideas? I'm running Optimized Shift v2.3 on my phone if that makes a difference. Not sure why i would but who knows...
Read the market download page for the app. It clearly states Verizon blocks IRC over 3g. This is true for any IRC app not just AndroIRC. If you want to use it over 3g you will need to run it thru a SSH tunnel first. Check out an app called "connect bot" or "ssh persistent tunnels" on the market. The second one costs 1.50 but it is more stable than connect bot, at least in my opinion.
I have an Optimus G on Sprint with the following software versions:
Android 4.1.2, kernel 3.4.0, Build JZO54K, Software LS970ZVB
My previous phone was an HTC Evo 4G that was trouble-free with root and wifi tether used daily for two and a half years until it fell in a toilet.
This Optimus is rooted (all stock, just root) and the TrevE Mod version of WiFi tether is installed. The tether SSID is visible and it will connect and give an IP address but there is no internet connection. I have tried various settings of device profile, routing fix, mss clamping and driver reload, it simply doesn't work. The Wifi tether requires the phone to be restarted if it is stopped. I could live with that, but it is useless without internet connectivity.
Giving up on the WiFi tether, I tried the simplest USB tether that I am aware of, easytether. I have used easytether on other phones without any problems. On my Optimus G, easytether establishes a connection and internet works for a minute or two, then stops and my computer network icon gets the yellow triangle with "no internet access" message. This can be repeated over and over. Disconnect, reconnect, two minutes of internet, then stop.
This is very frustrating. I would absolutely love this phone if some form of tether would function.
If anyone has any suggestions or prior experience with this issue, your help is appreciated.

I read up on this issue a few times.. Here's what I gathered if you haven't found the solution yet...
Use WiFi Tether for Root Users
Device Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
MMS Clamping: Check
Routing Fix: Check
Let me know if that works.. If not I can post the rest of my settings.
Good Luck!
B
Did the following:
Device Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
MMS Clamping: Check
Routing Fix: Check
Still not working for me. Other rooted apps do work
Sprint Optimus G here
Try this profile it works

I'm sure there may be something out there but honestly, I'm in a pinch and do not have time to search. I've always rooted my phone and purchased Foxfi for those times I do not have Wi-Fi on my laptop and need to do connect quickly. Today was one of those days as I needed to send a document, while I'm on vacation as I forgot to do it prior. I'm visiting my parents and they do not have internet (yes they are old school or as I call them... ancient) and could not connect my laptop. At times like this, Foxfi was my savior, into now when I went to turn it on my phone and I received a message that the app no longer works. Can anyone provide me with some background as to what happened and why? I'm running Android 8.1.0 / Oxygen 5.1.1 on my OnePlus 5. I've used the app before on this phone, so I know it use to work. Thank you.
Well, I don't know why it's not working, but why are you just not using the built in Portable Hotspot option? You can change the SSID, the password as well, you can do 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and there is a very convenient quick tile for turning on and off this hotspot.
You can find it by searching for "Tethering & portable hotspot" or by going to the Settings > Wireless & Network section: More > Tethering & portable hotspot.
Edit:
I just tried FoxFi, and it's not working for me either, saying the my carrier might not support tethering, which is not true. It offered me to download PdaNet+, with a new version of tethering, "WiFi Direct Hotspot (new!)", and this application is working and it seems to keep the licence from FoxFi, so you'll not have to buy it again.
Hello one more time team
Here I'm reporting another annoying bug with my device
I have tried many time to create or make a 5ghz hotspot work
My external devices can see others 5ghz network but even when i create it with the RM5S, It is not visible.
I have done a network reset on the phone, check and unchecked the "support 6th generation" option in the tethering options and it just does not work
2.4ghz works fine
I have reported the issue via ticket but I guess will not be solved as my previous tickets
Anyone with the same issue?
Attaching evidence

some countries do not allow the use of personal 5g wifi tethering. its possible you live in one of these countries? the feature is blocked on the rom if you are in a country that does not allow it.

Hey Patrick
Thanks again for your answer
I read about that limitation in a oneplus forum but I don't really know how to check that.
Actually, i can add something to my issue
While i am reporting the hotspot issue, i must said i am able to share a "connected" wifi using the 5ghz band WHEN (Sorry for the big letters) in use an app called "vpn hotspot"
I dont want to confuse you
I dont need the vpn hotspot app to create a normal hotspot. But the default settings of RM ROM does not let me create the 5ghz connection.
When i connect to a 5ghz router at home, i can "create" another wifi 5ghz network using "vpn hotspot" app (i usually do this cause i need a vpn network for many devices)
The main problem is with mobile data. When i am not at home, the vpn hotspot app does "IS NOT" allowed to modify the system settings for the hotspot created by the rom, it only replicates the original setup and bypass the VPN traffic
So, going back to the original issue, i am not sure if it is a country restriction. I usually live.in Hungary but i am now in poland and i received the device on this last country.
I would even wonder how to create the hotspot using the wifi 6 standard as it should be supported as well.
Thanks for the feedback

sounds like the VPN software you're using is interfering with the creation of the hotspot.
if the 5g hotspot wifi works as intended using the normal hotspot settings on the phone without the VPN, then it would make sense that its the VPN app thats causing the issue.
I can create and use both 2.4g and 5g wifi hotspots, sharing my Mobile network. it works correctly. i do use DNS 66 to block adverts but thats the only VPN type software i use, and its only for black listing adverts and inbedded video adverts on sites.
so test the hotspot settings with the normal phone settings with the VPN off or uninstalled. - if this works correctly. the problem is with your VPN software. you would need to contact support for that app.
some devices do not work with wifi 6 option enabled. turning it off may increase connectivity issues.

Well. I know there was going to be some confusion.
The hotspot does not work with 5ghz even without vpn.
When i use my home wifi, I connect from my phone (no mobile data) to my vpn provider and then with another app, "vpn hotspot" (root required) i can share the vpn traffic to external devices via hotspot. When I do these steps sometimes 5ghz works, and i say sometimes cause I left the "vpn hotspot" wifi setting as default. I might change some network options there but, those options are not available for hotspot within "vpn hotspot" this is why i am blaming the ROM, But maybe you are right and there is some interference between apps. I will try to flush the settings one more time
I have flushed the rules of the vpn hotspot app and tried again. Working fine with and without vpn!
Thanks
I see.
You are trying to filter your wifi connection at home through your phones wifi and share thst connection to other wifi devices.
I dont believe it will work correctly. you're essentially trying to create a wifi repeater.
You're making your wifi chip do 2 things, and its unable to run two streams at the same time.
It state in the Hotspot settings
" Use hotspot to provide internet to other devices through your mobile data"
If you want to connect to your home wifi with your phone, and share thst connection with another device you must use USB tethering.
You risk causing damage to your wifi chip trying to force two connections on it.
using repeater apps, does cause the signal strength to degrade, (bacause you're using the same antenna to receive your home wifi and to create its own wifi. limiting the bandwith and can cause connection issues over time.
the wifi chips in android phone can create a repeating wifi signal, but they're not made to do it. normally as stock android runs when you enable wifi hotspot, it stops the current wifi connecting to create a new wifi access point. using apps to get around that may cause issues and even damage as i stated above. if your wifi chip breaks due to improper use, it will need a warranty return.
