Heya, I just got my Desire last week, this is my first Android phone.
I've been following the forums since I found them this monday (or so). And decided I pretty much wanted to root my phone so I can get access to the market, and such.
First of all I wanna know just how easy it is to revert it back to how it was before I messed with it?
And then I'd like to hear what ROM I should use (with reasons), if I just want a pretty clean one, with improvements ofcourse, and an unlocked market and all that?
And if someone can tell me how/what program I can use, to save all my contacts and texts and so?
Thanks
(I did search, but there's just too much info, hope this will stay on-topic and not get confusing. )
Rolling back to 'stock' is easy. You just run an the nbh file which is probably available somewhere on this board, which returns your phone to factory settings - rom, radio, hboot and all.
Your contacts are saved automatically in your google account.
For sms try 'sms backup and restore' from the market.
By the way you posted this in the wrong section. Post in the general section next time. This section is for rom development.
Actually, everyone suggests 'sms backup and restore' but it doesn't backup mms...
I would either go for SpriteBackup or MyBackup
Thanks I don't have any mms atm, so that's not a problem
But what ROM should I be using then? >.<
I suggest you NexTSense 3.2. It's awesome!!

Try some asop image like opendesire or cyanogenmod

Indeed What does asop mean?
And well, a clean one, but RAM improvements and such are fine
And I like HTC Sense, I think
Unlocked market:
I'm from denmark, so I can't buy apps, I can only download the free ones, and I want to be able to access all of it

Every one of these work. You are never going to get the perfect rom to suit your needs unless you make one yourself. The instructions to make your own are on the dev forum too.
Take a decent bit of time and read the threads on the dev forums and decide what you want then flash it. If it's not for you, try another.

Greetings fellow Friends from Galaxy
I just moved myself from the HTC Magic section to this one.. It was quite a jump, the Galaxy S Camera and 4inch screen are AWESOME =)
I have a few noob questions that I don't want to spread through many posts, so i've chosen to get them all here, without polution this forum section. Also they might come in handy for future Galaxy S buyers!
My phone is: 2.1-update1 @ I9000XXJF5
Question #1
Well at first glance everyone's trying to fix the "LAG PROBLEM"... I haven't noticed any lag!! What are we talking about? If its a fix.. i want it too
Click to collapse
the lag problem does not accure instantly after startup, it takes a while to do so.
Question #2
The phone came with Android 2.1, but at samsung-firmwares.com and at this dev section of the forum, i saw the JP3 Froyo release. How stable is this? Is it already a daily driver or a total beta? As an Android lover, i'd love to have the latest
Click to collapse
this release is, lets say, alpha quality, however some do use it daily and seems to be stable so far, but the jit is broken, so dont expect it to be faster than eclair
Question #3
I've used the One Click rooting solution and then the ROM Manager Clockwork to boot into clockwork rom and make a full-system backup. In my HTC Magic i had the recovery ROM (Amon_RA) flashed into the internal phone memory, so even if i didn't have a ROM installed, i was ALWAYS able to boot into recovery. That was a safety plus. How can i flash the Clockwork Recovery directly to my phone, without the ROM Manager? I'd feel more secure if i could count on recovery even if, for example, i flashed a non-working system ROM.
Click to collapse
you can run the clockwork recovery from original recovery by simply running it´s update.zip, this does in fact load the clockwork recovery into memory
Question #4
So what is YOUR favourite ROM? My stock has some unwanted apps, and even worse, it's Eclair. I'd like to switch soon, but i don't know these Galaxy S ROMs Tell me what's the best ROM for you!
Thanks guys, XDA is indeed the #1 place for mobile stuff

If JIT is broken, the rest of new 2.2 features can be achieved through Market tools... I'll stick to 2.1 then. By the way, where's a CLEAN 2.1 Rom? this one has lots of service-provider tools... They suck.

Now That's a fix! So i just have to keep my update.zip of Clockwork Rom in INTERNAL SD CARD so that anytime, anywhere, i just have to perform update.zip and the Clockwork will boot ONCE from RAM and them be cleared at next boot, right?

Hy all.
I just got a Htc desire hd yesterday with stock android 2.3.3 and i dont know a thing about rooting and hacking android(i had an iPhone 3gs before). So i would like to know how can i get the Sense 3.0 (like the one from htc sensations) on my htc? please someone explain this in a simple way,for dummies like me.
Please if someone want to help me.
Thanks.
Search this forum.. There are numerous guides on how to Root your DHD..
hy thanks
but i need to know the steps .... i dont know anything about this kind of stuff...
Hi,
welcome to XDA! You're generally better off asking questions on the Desire HD Q&A thread.
A stock (as in made by HTC) Sense 3.0 rom isn't available yet (if at all) but there are a few custom roms that dedicated teams have made.
Here's what I did to get 3.0 on my DHD - please note that all these steps may not be necessary but they're just what I did. Also I'm pretty sure they'll void your warranty as I think you'll need to root your phone to get a custom rom on there.
Firstly, read up on this stuff as ignorance = bricked device!
I started by looking at the sticky'd threads over on the Desire HD Development forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=765
specifically M_T_M's roll up thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936214
which should contain all the info you'll need to back up, downgrade, root, s-off/eng s-off, flash clockwork recovery, wipe and install a sense 3.0 ROM.
I think you'll probably need to downgrade your phone from 2.3.3 to 1.32.405.6 (I could be wrong, but I don't think you can root 2.3.3 - I'm sure if I'm wrong someone in the know will correct me).
This guide seems to cover downgrading -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
then this guide is great for flashing a ROM etc -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11557769
I'd recommend Virtuous Unity for a 3.0 Sense rom, but there are others out there.
Hope that helps
Good luck!
Grim.

No problem, I know it can be hard if you don't know where to start.
1) Yup, it will erase the content on your phone, but shouldn't erase your SD card.
You can back your contacts up to the SD card through the People application:
people-> menu -> import/export -> export to SD card -> choose account to export.
this will save them as a .vcf file in the root of your SD card, you then reverse the process once you have your new ROM installed.
I think the most popular application to use to back-up your apps is Titanium backup (available from the market), however I think this needs root permissions, so you'll likely not be able to use it (if my previous assumption about not being able to root 2.3.3 is correct). I use a different app called Appmonster which I find better for restoring market links (personal opinion), and I don't think this needs root.
I think it's possible to back up your settings using the above apps, however I'm sure I read that it's not recommended, especially when moving to a sense 3.0 ROM.
Your photos and videos should already be on your SD card, however it might be worth using the (PC) sync software to sync them onto your pc first just in case.
I'm pretty sure you will like your 3.0 ROM, I love the one I'm using. however there are other threads that detail how to restore your phone to stock, I'm sure it's more complex than this (I've not tried it) but I would assume you just flash back a stock ROM. If your handset is network branded you could re-flash either the stock network ROM or a stock HTC ROM - I'd definitely read up on this before attempting it though.
Good luck!
cheers,
Grim

THIS IS NOT TRUE, the desire HD will NOT receive Sense 3.0 a good example of this...http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/htc-sense-3-0-will-only-support-sensation-evo-3d-flyer-and-new/
Not officially at least, XDA is full of partial sense 3.0 ROMS, and I'm sure will be quickly growing with more and more full sense 3.0 ROMS
htc does however, state, they may try to work in a few htc sense 3.0 components into some of the other devices.
Thanks button is aways appreciated!

Hi guys!
My daughter and I are utter newbies at the rooting game - but we did succeed in getting her HTC Desire (European, GSM version) Sed-OFF and rooted. After the blood sweat and tears involved in getting the thing rooted, I didn't think finding a suitable ROM was going to be very challenging. How wrong I was!
We've tried 3-4 different custom ROMs so far, but we're not really finding what she needs.
Goals:
1) Less bloatware.
2) Applications go to the SD-card, so she doesn't run out of space so incredibly quickly. (I know there a lot of ways to skin that cat. Any one is fine!)
3) Tight integration with daughter's Google account. (Like vanilla. For example, we've discovered that CyanogenMod is setup to integrate with exchange accounts. I'm sure that's great for someone, but not for her ... )
4) Google Play already installed and easy to get working.
5) If possible, HTC Sense.
Doesn't seem all THAT difficult ...
I can assure you pretty much all roms will have close integration wiwh your google account.
The index sticky on the development forum provides a list of all existing roms for desire.

These 3 are quite recommended for your goals (in no specific order):
Supernova
AN-Droid
Cool Droid
Or, if you can live without sense, try the ROM in my sig.
All of them are ROMs you can install and don't look back anymore after a bit of personal tweaking. It might require installing other hboots and setting up sd-ext partitions, though.

Actually, my daughter is trying out the MIUI version at the moment, and likes it pretty well. It's not actually the Sense UI, but it's very nice looking.
Unfortunately, we seem to be having a problem getting a2sd working. We installed the S-OFF and recovery tool from http://revolutionary.io/ - it seemed to be the latest thing going. It loads this: ra-desire-v2.0.1. We have used it successfully to flash the various custom mods, and we carefully followed instructions in setting up an EXT3 partition (size 1gb). However, the partition isn't mounting and can't be used by a2sd. I even get an error message when I try to mount it in recovery mode.
Bother.
mite i suggest this recovery, it is the best in everyway and partitions ur sdcard perfect.(dont forget to backup first). just download and install the updater app then open it and flash recovery. simples

Hi, this is the daughter!
Thanks, this recovery really works better and is a lot easier to handle!
We successfully partitioned the SD card again and now have about 1GB on it. However, we're confused about a couple of things, can you help us with them?
When we reinstalled MIUI (miui-ger_DESIRE_2.4.6_FULL_EN_DE.zip) all of the apps that were built into the custom ROM went directly to the internal storage and can't be moved.
Some of the new apps I installed (AirDroid, BubbleUPnP, Alchemy Classic) went either directly to the SD card or I could at least move them there, the others (YouTube, SwiftKey 3) did not and I can't move them either.
OP, I suggest reading the rules on future before posting around this site.

Tip: The "X-PART" version is the one you're looking for. It maps the internal storage to /ext partition on your card, so you'll see your 1g there under Settings - Apps.

YES!! It worked!!!
My daughter (15) goes back to school tomorrow with a successful project behind her. She'll have a free phone with space for as many apps as she can find - and a new feel for the the gizmo she uses. I did most of the forum writing (English is not her mother tongue), but she did most of the reading, downloading and general work.

Has anyone tried this mod on an HTC One with a 4.2.2 ROM ?
I think this is one of the MOST useful options, but unfortunately there are not many (only 1) Sense based roms offering this feature...

How about you make a Nandroid backup as suggested and try it for yourself? He posted it for a reason, you know. lol

How about you show some education and don't flood the threads with useless comments ??
I was JUST asking if someone had tried it... nothing else.
I apologize for my lack of an education. I woke up one day knowing how to read and write. What an awesome day that was.

Good for you !!
Now, please unless you have something to say about the topic of the thread...or answer some of the questions asked stop writing unhelpful, and usless comments... Everyone will appreciate it.
Thanks
Would love this mod too, gave it a flash but my device won't boot, even tried editing the classes.dex file but really have no idea what I'm doing and don't have a pc to grab a logcat at the moment... Sorry I can't be of any help.

By the way, I just found out yesterday that the new Viper ROM actually has it in its Tweaks. I don't know if there's a flashable zip file around, but I'd ask the developer if he would have time to make one if that's okay with him.
i dont understand you guys...
i have a new htc one from t-mobile germany, but without branding or simlock, only a few t-mob ringtones are installed...
my one is not rooted, unlocked or something similar... everything is stock.
in my device the LONG PRESS BACK TO KILL APP is working normaly!
try to push and hold the back button with the hole thumb...

Are you sure ?
This feature is definitely not available on stock rom, and only 1 stock based custom rom has it (Renovate rom, which i tried downloading but servers were down, so i flashed Trickdroid with 4.2.2 instead). But it's available on almost all aosp based roms. Once AOSP roms for the One start being really stable for daily use, i won't even think of having a sense based rom again.
yes of course iam sure.
in my note2 this was an flashable zip mod,
but in my htc one this is stock possible! thats because iam so wondered after i read that for this is a mod...

Well, you must be the only person that can kill any app by pressing the back button...with a stock rom.

I've tried for over 1 week to do this (when making DarkSense One ROM) and I couldn't do it, E.Cadro also tried and can't either - we are both experienced with smali.
If you want this so bad then flash Viper. They are only able to do it because m0narx intercepts all button calls then sorts them out in his own files (VenomButtonsManager), bypassing the calls already in the existing android.policy.jar files.
