I can't find mention of it in the Q&A forums, so I'm afraid I'm the only one.
I have flashed 5 or so of the Cyanogen6 nightlies over the past couple of weeks, wiping the Evo before each one, and I haven't been able to get the built in wifi tether to function properly on any of them.
The Android Wifi Tether App works just fine, but with the built in one, i just get the "limited or no connection" error on windows 7 machines, and web pages don't load.
The one thing i haven't done is flash any of the new wimax radios, but I assume those serve a completely different function, though it occurs to me i could be totally wrong about that.
Am I missing something simple here?
ok, i figured it out for myself-
Windows 7 just takes a little while to identify the network and let you pick what type of network you're connecting too. after i selected which network it was, i had full network access.
So it worked for you? I tried it this morning, and while my laptop saw the connection and could connect, I was stuck at limited or no connectivity.
Edit: how long did it take before it identified the network? That's where it sat for me, and I was too impatient to wait it out. lol.

Eh, in that case I'll stick to wifi tether for root users, or just use the native usb tether.
Cool that it works though.
Wifi keeps disconnecting, Evo w/ Cyanogen 6.12
Posting this here because I can't find any other threads specific to this issue...
Flashed CM 6.12 on Saturday. Wifi DOES connect, DOES work, but will disconnect itself after a little while (haven't really been able to gauge yet exactly how long it takes, if there is a pattern, etc.)
When it disconnects at home, it won't pick up the network again; that may be because it's a hidden network, though...
At work and at another house, however, it would auto-reconnect if I turned the antenna off & back on.
Pretty new to this, so any help is much appreciated.
If it matters...

Hm... may have just been that CPUtuner was automatically turning wifi off once the battery got below a certain percentage...

this has been an ongoing problem coming from 2.1 and still exists in 2.2.
i tried different versions of wireless tether 2.02 and 2.05 pre1, pre2, pre5 and now pre7. they all have the same problem where i connect and everything works great, then after 10 minutes, the connection drops on the laptop. on the phone it still says connected but with 0KB. (even if theres nothing connected, it should show 0.1 to 0.4kb) i will then have to disconnect tether from my phone, then turn it on again, it'll work for another 10 minutes before the connection drops again. i tried wiping the phone and it didnt help. i upgraded to froyo yesterday, tried wireless tether on 2.05 pre7 and the same problem exist.
does anyone have this issue?
Wrong Forum.
Questions belong in the Q&A Forum.
sorry, mods, please move. thanks!
Moved to Q&A.
I have the exact same issue. I thought I was the only one. I don't recall it being a problem prior the to OTA (1.47) update.
The only way I've found to have stable wifi tether at this point is to use cyanogen's rom. The built in Froyo tether is very stable and doesn't have this dropout issue. But I would prefer to use stock with Sense UI.
it was a problem for me since day 1. was hoping the issue would go away after the 1.47 update but no. i would also like to keep it as stock as possible with sense. if anyone can come up with a solution or fix. it would make me really happy
It is very annoying. I've tried:
-enabling Access Control
-Adding a WPA2 password
-Using both of the above
-Changing the SSID
-Changing the Channel
-Changing the LAN settings
-Updating to pre3 and then pre4.
-Wiping and Clearing Cache and Installing only Wifi Tether
-Numerous ROMS (Stock Eclair, Fresh 1.0.1, Damages 3.2.3, Stock Froyo + netarchy's kernel)
The only thing I haven't tried yet is pre6/7. I will give them a try tonight, but I don't have much faith that they will fix the issue.
i've done the same as you. im on pre7 now and it didnt fix the issue. =(
I have this problem only with Android 2.2 roms. I have tried Android Wireless Tether 2.0.5 pre4, pre6, and pre7 with the stock kernel and with netarchy's 3.7.6c kernel. I have tried on the rooted odexed final 3.26.651.6 posted by netarchy, Fresh 3.1.0.1, Ava's 3.0, and Baked Snack 1.1. The settings I use don't seem to matter (various SSIDs, encryption on/off, access control on/off). I can't stay connected longer than 10 minutes, but sometimes I am only connected for a minute or less. Also, after a disconnect it takes several tries to reconnect.
Might be good to start an issue for the developer's on their site by going here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/entry
Android Wireless Tether 2.0.2 (theory of evolution) works fine for me on various Android 2.1 roms and I stay connected for hours at a time.
What happens when you change the power mode to always on? Its under advanced settings. The default is to disable after 10min of inactivity.
Maybe you guys tried this. I didn't see it mentioned.

where is this setting? is it a setting in the wireless tether? i dont see it. only the disable wake lock. which is checked.
I'm sorry I thought you were talking about sprints app.
Maybe that setting applies to the wireless tether app too?
Worth a try anyways. It's under settings>wireless>Sprint hotspot settings>menu-advanced>power settings.

I wish my disconnects were only every 10 or 15 minutes. Unfortunately I am lucky to stay connected for 3 minutes at a time. When I get disconnected, the phone stops broadcasting its SSID and I have to stop and restart tethering to get connected again. I finally added an issue to the google project site here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=488&start=200
I think I found a very simple solution to this problem. I didn't think I had this problem, but I found out that I did once I tried to download over 12GBs of different operating systems for one of my classes. As you could imagine it was getting very frusterating having the disconects. The solution I have has had an active download for almost an hour now.
The solution? Turn on the wifi radio before tethering.
I wanted to kick myself in the nuts for not thinking of it sooner. Anyway, if you're having this issue give it a try and post your results.
Edit: So it seems a notification from Bloo killed the connection....I'm not sure what's up with that. I noticed when I sent a txt msg it interruped the connection briefly, but it started right back up. Any thoughts, comments, concerns?

You want this unchecked... wake-lock keeps your phone awake.
I read that changing the channel from 6 to 1 or 11 or just another channel may make it work. Good luck!
I'm using fresh rom 3.1.0.2 and the wireless tether version built in is 2.0.5 pre8 and I was wondering if there was a way tether my wifi connection. Is there another app that will do this? Everytime I turn on wifi and enable wireless tether it turns off wifi and I see my 3G connection turn on. This is my first time using wireless tether and it seems like from what I read that this is the norm. Does anyone know a way to make wifi priority over 3G or 4G? TIA.
So I have done the official 2.2 upgrade but now my wifi isn't working. I have gone into software updates and updated the profile, prl, and checked for new software and firmware.
Wifi keeps saying "obtaining ip address". It's my home wifi and before the update it was working flawlessly.
Appreciate the help.
Do I have this posted in the wrong section, or has this question been answered? I've searched high and low.
Try reflashing newest radio and wimax. Flash one at a time. This has happen to me before with wifi and 4g but on 1. 47. If that does not work flash calklins v1. 02 rom. I am using that on wifi typing thos response. Good luck

from the sound of it he flashed the official OTA so probably isnt rooted.
Have you tried it with any other routers to see if it connects?
try unplugging yor router and re plugging it back in to reset it and try connecting if that doesnt work sounds like your radio is messed up and you may have to take ti to a sprint store so they can reflash it if you arent rooted.

I am using the router for my laptop right now so I dont think the router is the problem.
I had the unofficial .3 update which is when my wifi stopped working, then I upgraded with the fix to .6 last night, still no wifi. I am not root, just bone stock .6 froyo...
Take it to sprint service center. Or delete the wifi settings in the phone and reconnect.

The reason i suggest resetting the router is because they often store information about a MAC address, When the information changes sometimes routers have connection issues. you dont see it a lot and since most of the time the information doesnt change (you dont update much on your pcs that would cause this). When it does change (ie a radio from a phone) it can sometimes cause issues. that's why i suggested you restart the router. I have had it happen several times when changing radios on my phones over the years.
Just because 1 thing connects to a router does not mean it cant contribute to another thing not connecting to it. I also wouldnt bet my life that it would fix it or anything.i was just giving a suggestion that HAS worked for me in the past when similar issues happened.IT was a good place to start. It would also help verify the problem is in deed with the phone from an actual tech point stand instead of an assumption.
anyway best of luck with getting this fixed

it is definatly the phone then. It sounds like thw Wimax radio didnt flash right. With out Root i think your best bet is to drop by a sprint store they should be able to reflash it for you.
@chris17house
I have the same issue on my EVO that is still on 1.47.
The first time I connected my router gives my phone a lease for a ip address (lets say 192.168.0.010) and associates it with the mac address of my phone.
When I try to reconnect at a later time, the lease for my phone on the router has not expired, but the router gives my phone a new ip address (let say 192.168.0.020), which causes a conflict with the same mac address, but two different ip address. Once I reset my router and my phone the problem is fixed, because the router releases the lease and my phone does a dns flush.
Do you think flashing the wimax or radio instead of reflashing the entire rom would be worth a try? And if so, where is that file located please.
Ok, so wifi connects everywhere except my home. I have unplugged the router and modem for an hour and reconnected them. I still am unable to connect to my home wifi. Is there something more i need to be doing?
I was having the same problem with work and home, but all I did was forget both locatations and discover them again.

Thats not the problem.
So I wanted to try out different kernels yesterday. I'm rooted using the Stock ROM.
My phone was already running netanarchy's 4.1.9.1 with no problems, but I wanted to try out King's kernel BFS #8 as well as #6. I did a cache and dalvik wipe prior to each flash. In the end, I deemed that I personally like netanarchy's kernels more, so I switched back to 4.1.9.1.
However, now my 4G keeps turning on and off. This is causing my phone to significantly lag in intervals correlating with the on and off of the 4G toggle. Is it possible that flashing different kernels somehow borked my wimax radio?
Any help is much appreciated.
Is it anything like I described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8052344
I'm having this issue and I never even rooted my phone. Note my latest reply that I did a hard reset on one of the evo's and now the 4g radio hangs on "turning on..." when I try to turn it on. Still seeing that now. Considering doing the unrevoked 3.2 to root it and try to fix it since sprint is clueless on the issue.
Yea, it is similar to your issue. I found your thread after I posted mine. I tried updating to the latest Wimax update found on XDA and that helped somewhat.
My 4G stays on, scans, and says connecting to Sprint network. However, it never successfully connects. I now believe I have the dreaded MAC address problem and am now trying to fix it.
I can't even see my 4G MAC address because I can't get the 4G radio to turn on. How else can I check whether my keys are screwed up (without being rooted)?
try dialing ##3282# and select view mode. Go to WiMax and look under NIA. That should have the MAC address.
If it does not match what is listed on your box, then your MAC addresses do not match.

You gotta be rooted to do that. As for your keys getting hammered, the key issue arises on rooted phones after a bad flash, or corrupted radio file. More than likely your keys are fine. Let me ask you this, have you previously have 4G working, and it just stopped working? Or you now just tried to use it, and it's not working?

Yes, it used to work. I picked up signal around the boston area a month or two ago (before boston officially had 4g). I can't remember whether I used 4g successfully after the 2.2 upgrade. I was part of the group that did the .3 leaked 2.2 update and then took the .3 to .6 update OTA. I have never rooted this phone.

There is no WiMax option when I do this. I think the WiMax radio needs to be switched on to see this. But I can't get the radio to turn on.
I've been using alogcat to try to debug the issue. I see this error come up about 90 seconds after trying to enable 4G (this is the same time the "turning on..." changes to "Unable to start 4g"):
E/WimaxStateTracker( 104): Failed to load Wimax driver -=>wl.release
I haven't been able to find any information about what this might mean.
same problem here; ever since running unrevoked 3 the other day, my evo 4g keeps turning 4G on and off by itself, and, wont let me stop it from doing that..
its killing my battery with its constant searching, and I cant find any sort of "tweak" that will allow me to just shut it off or leave it on; the widgets dont do it, so I cant figure out how to stop it..
was working fine before this..
On stock 2.2 froyo, stock kernel...
any ideas?
thanks!

Ok you may have hammered your 4G then. I've heard of a couple of people who took the leaked update, and fouled up their 4G. I would suggest you backup your stuff then run the latest RUU to see if that clears things up with the wimax driver not loading. If not take the phone to Sprint.

i read the thread you started about this issue. you mentioned you were having trouble breaking the on/off loop but then mentioned your wife somehow was able to do it. while in the on/off loop, did you find that the the radio was actually spending any time "scanning" after it turned on? on one of my evos, the phone would switch from on to off and back to on so quickly, the button was always grayed out in the wireless menu so i could never interrupt it. on my other evo, it would spend a little time scanning ( a second or 2), which was enough time to press the button so the 4g would turn off for good and break the on/off loop. a hard reset fixed the phone with the unbreakable loop (4g now works). a hard reset caused the other phone to change so that 4g just hangs at "turning on..." when i try to toggle it on.

By running the latest RUU, do you mean perform the latest OTA sprint update (the .6) by putting in on my SD card and doing the volume down/power button trick? Is this safe if I already have the update applied? I was considering doing this but wasn't sure if it would be safe to do.
Ok this might be a bit lengthy.
Yesterday I got a replacement EVO because my last one stopped taking a charge (luckily I was able to lock it and flash back to stock).
It's been almost a year since I last rooted an EVO, and I thought I remembered all the steps. So this morning I rooted it (unrevoked). Cleared all the cache's, and then flashed Calkulin's EViO 3 v1 Beta 2.
Well once it booted up all I got was 1x, not 3g. I then tried to flash EVO_Radio_2.15.00.04.08_WiMAX_27925_PRI_NV_1.90.00 3. And then reflashed EViO 3 again.
Again I only have 1x. After this I realized I ****ed up big time. I didnt grab any numbers from the radio screen or make a 4g key backup OR make a nand backup.
The phone is saying the following:
baseband_ver: 2.15.00.11.19
PRI_ver: 1.90_003
PRL_ver: 01115
Hardware information is "unavailable" for 4G MAC Address, Wifi MAC Address, and Bluetooth Address.
So how badly did I **** up? Is this something that
It'll show up as unavailable unless you're actually connected, then it'll show.
Also, if you're on AOSP, it'll show 1x because it shows true data strength unlike sense.
Did you run the 3G fix on a sense rom?

Thanks for the reply. Well whats weird is that im doing this at my desk, and on my old phone it always said 3g. And I had Calkulin's EViO 3 running on that as well.
Is there a way to test my connection to verify it's 3g?
And is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974180&highlight=3g+sense the 3g fix you were referencing? (and no i have not applied this)

Hi,
obviously I am new to this forum (yes, I admit it, I had an iPhone 4 until recently ). I read a lot of threads here and managed to root two HTC Desire Z phones thanks to the many helpful infos here! I even had to debrand the 2nd Desire Z, because it was a Vodafone branded phone, using a Goldcard, which worked like a charm.
Now everything seems to be fine so far, except some little occasional hickups:
One is, that my battery seems to drain pretty fast when I am downloading something over my Home-WiFi. It can go down over 40% within two hours.
The second is, that every now and then, the phones do not find my WiFi broadcast automatically. I have to go into settings, access points and then manually select the WiFi and hit confirm on the next screen popup showing the MAC-address amongst other things. Most of the times all I need to do is switch my phone on to get the connection. But sometimes it just doesn't...
Both phones are running the Virtuous v2.0.0 (Vision), which is based on the latest 2.42.405.2 release from HTC.
In addition I manually flashed the radio to 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M using the image from this thread, since it still had the really old radio (26.03.02.26_M) from the downgrade process to the 1.34 firmware installed and this radio seemed to be the one officially released by HTC in connection with the latest 2.42.405.2 firmware.
So now I am wondering if this was the right choice.
I've run across threads claiming the .30 radio (and probably another radio starting with 26.08 or so ?) would be a good combination with the Virtuous v2.0.0. But I am wondering why one should use an older radio. And I don't want to try out many different radios for the next days, so I am hoping, that maybe somebody here has already gone through that process or can at least elaborate on their experiences with the radio they are using.
Maybe someone can also shed some light onto the question, if I should also align my RIL as discussed in this thread.
Thanx in advance!!!
Tronar

Really? Noone? No recommendations from the experts or opinions from happy or disappointed ROM and Radio user?
The radio depends on your location. Best to ask someone from your country about the better radio to use.
as for me, i do not like the new radio, as the data connection is sluggish, as compared to the older ones.
The best radio to use would be the one that was RELEASED with the rom. The one that ends in .03.
The data connection is definitely different with the .03, because before my phone usually showed 3G on a regular basis and switched to H only when I caused some data transfer (e.g. browsing or requesting data through a Widget). Now my phone constantly displays an H (unless I am in a G only region of course).
Question: did they just change the way the connection is displayed or did they also change the switching between regular 3G and HSDPA? I think I read somewhere that the switching preserved battery in the long run, because maintaining an H connection requires more power than a simpler 3G connection. Does anyone know something about that?
Hi,
first of all: I am also using Virtuous v2.0.0 (Vision) in combination with the latest radio (26.10.04.03) on my DZ.

I also have to manually disable/enable my wifi to connect to any network, but only after a reboot. Since I do not reboot frequently I do not care.
In general the 26.10.04.03 radio works best for me (in Germany) - I have good coverage and a stable 3G connection. My battery is also fine with this radio. But as it was said previously YMMV.
Are you using any software which could interfere with the wifi state? For example I am using "UnlockAtHome" which for some reason tries to put the Wifi to sleep when you are not connected to a whitelisted network and the screen is turned off - something like this could cause wifi connection drops.
