[Q] Battery problems - Desire General

Hey,
I use opendesire 3.0.2 and im having serious battery drain troubles. I can barely last 5 hours without needing to get the charger. Ive tried many roms and they are all the same so im guessing its either an app causing it or my battery is broken.
I was just wondering whats the best way to see battery usage by app, ive tried spare parts (and *#*#4636#*#*) but that doesnt show much.
Also is it usual for display to have 80% usage for display?
Thanks!

home screen, menu button -settings- about phone- battery

Had previously tried that. Thats what i meant by 80% for display, does that seem normal?

Depends on what else you have used.
Does sound a bit excessive though.

hmmm tbh think im just gonna order a new battery for 15 quid of play. Other people on the same rom report 30 hours or more, mine doesnt even come close if i underclock and barely use it! No harm in having a spare battery anyway!

Short battery life!

Hello people, after having used my Touch pro 2's GPS function extensively one day on battery, I have realized that the battery's life has shortened by huge amounts of time. It lasts for less than 24 hours now, so I was wondering if I needed a new battery or is there something I can do to restore it back to the previous state. Thanks!
I don't think using the GPS should ruin your battery, just doesn't make sense! Are you sure you shut off the GPS after using it? Are you running any other programmes in the background? Did you flash a new ROM?
My battery started going down twice as fast after swapping to the new "official" Sense 2.5 ROM.
you can try a couple of things that may extend your battery life. try first turning off the auto speakerphone when the phone is face down. i just did this and i can tell a marked difference in just a couple of days. also search battery life reg edits. theres a ton out there here and on ppcgeeks that will definetly help. in general i noticed that when I use GPS the battery drain is pretty high. hope that helps

Using the GPS all day will def drain your battery much faster, especially if you're using aGPS and/or an app that also downloads data to compliment the location info (like google maps). The GPS radio isn't 2-way like the phone or 3G or wifi, but it's still a radio and will give a noticible hit on your batt life when used even moderately, let alone all day.
If you're going to be using GPS a lot, you might want to try different radio roms to see if any of them make a difference in the batt life for you, but I don't know that will make as much of a difference as it does for the phone reception, etc. I would also suggest evaluating various GPS apps, with an eye on relative battery drain
Well guys, thanks for the answers, but that still doesn't solve my problem because I don't use the GPS function often at all, but the battery still drains quickly. Also, there are no programs running in the background. There is however a data connection that is always on and the mail checks for mail every hour. But the thing is I don't want to change any settings to enhance battery life, If it worked fine with the same settings before, why wont it do the same now? Do I need a new battery? Thanks!

Ahhh sorry, I misunderstood, I thought you were just saying it drains faster while you use the GPS like that, not since you used it...I get it now.
That one day of heavy use shouldn't have killed your battery, take a look at THIS thread, others with the same issue/question have posted different things that have worked for them...you might want to give the steps in post #31 a try before thinking about buying a new batt.

You can install " battclock " and you can continuously see what the battery drain actually is during different functions.

Yes, great recommendation! (why didn't I think of that? lol)
And with battclock you can now see your CPU usage in real-time, which is probably one of the best coincidental indicators of battery drain (much more so than memory load, in my opinion)
Hi Dimitri,
I experienced the same problem where my battery life suddenly "shifted" from 48 hours to 12 hours on regular use..
I thought the problem was the battery and I replaced it, this did not help at all..
The only cause of this problem that I can think was loading the official HTC UK 6.5 ROM (1.86.401.0)..

This is exactly what I am experiencing. (This together with not being able to connect the device to PC)
Installed several 6.5 ROMs and suddenly the battery lasts only half a night.
My question is: When the battery is full, when you turn the device off (completely off, not in standby mode!) does the battery drain then?
As far as I see, the battery has only 50% left after a night rest while it is off. So, the only way to keep the battery full is to remove it from the device.
What are your experiences with this?

If you are truely turning it completely off, the battery should NOT drain at all. Have you tried a new battery? I bought a pair of batteries and an external charger on flEabay for like $12. The batteries are good as originals as far as I can tell.

Yes, I have two batteries, even an external charger.
Even when a battery is charged with the external charger, then put in the phone it drains the battery
hey guys can anyone link any of the forum topics to tweak battery life? the only things I have done is the general setting on the phone and the power management options with advance config are there more options and tweaks available?
thanks for all help!

Bright light...I'm also having BOTH of those problems...stock ATT rom. Within the past week my battery life has dropped exponentially, and when I went to sync last night, had not done so in a week or so, I get nothing...none of my PC's will recognize the phone as even being plugged in, let alone sync. I'm thinking maybe an ATT botched update?

So it seems I'm not alone.
Mine is a universal one, no brand whatsoever. I will try to reflash the original (6.1) stock ROM, including radio.
Have you flashed yours already?
@Bright.light @VirtualHomer:
I have the crap battery + no activesync issue.
I'm on the Josh's Black 1.7 ROM. I tried hard reseting, reflashing, going back to the stock ROM, but no improvement.
I have heard that removing the battery overnight is a possible fix for the USB issue (maybe for both?), but I haven't tried yet, will try tonight.
If anyone out there has any potential soultions here... would be great. Right now, I only get 1/2 a day (~6 hours) out of the battery & no hotsync at all (other than BT).
One thing I am pretty sure of: The bad battery life and the activesync issue came up around the same time. Wierd.
Cheers

You are right in assuming that battery life and connectivity issues came at the same time.
I was assuming this was because of a (bad?) flash, or maybe a bad ROM which changed something in a position that should not be changed and which is not restored by flashing another ROM.
A night without battery won't help, I think, because my device has been numerous times without any power and without any battery. However, I will try it again.
Could this be a faulty device? Or a design error?
@Bright.Light
I confirm that a night without the battery solved nothing. I have had my phone on for 5 hours now, taken 5 calls, none of them too long, checked email every 10 minutes (automagically) and I am down to 27% battery.
Also, I confirm that a replacement battery solves nothing, as I have also tried this.
I am planning on returning my device to an ATT store next week for a replacement... We'll see how it goes.
Cheers,
Matt
I'm in the same boat with mine. About two weeks ago the battery just started draining fast. Fast enough that it wouldn't make it to 4-5 hours without being charged. You could watch the battery meter drain. And what was weird was that there was no ROM change or anything that started this. Came out of the blue. Calling Spring tomorrow and getting a replacement is the best solution I can think of.

[Q] Battery time?

When i connect my wildfire to my pc with the usb cable and charge it to 100%, it last a lot less than when i charge it to 100% via the plug in the wall. I was wondering what the difference is?
Strange... I never had this problem. For me, it last for the same amount of time.
Custom rom or original?

I have the original rom and it's updated to android 2.2.1. Maybe i'm wrong but it seems that way. It also seems as if it takes longer to charge. I bought the phone at the end of december so it's still quite new. Is there maybe an application which i can use to optimize or calibrate the battery which will improve the usage time of my phone once the battery is fully charged?
juicedefender allows you to turn off your internet connection while your phone screen is off, or when certain apps are running (for example it shuts down my internet when i'm playing angry birds, etc)
not sure if it is really THAT effective (it tells me it gives me half extra battery life but don't think I really get that out of it) but I've heard very positive comments overall
also, using as few as possible widgets increased my battery life and performance
Thanks, i'll give it a go.

I only know of the Wipe battery Stats in ClockWorkMod, but you need root and the custom recovery installed.
Well i'll have to wait untill a root is available for the wildfire 2.2.1 to be able to do what you just mentioned.

Battery Issue ! Its the 7th Charge Cycle Now

I bought this amazing [As you all know how fast it is ] Galaxy Nexus and was previously using hTC Desire S[GB] !!!
I'm somehow not happy with the battery life and also the overheating of Nexus !
It is Stock[ROM + Kernel] + Root ! around 7th or 8th charge cycle !!
I did try out Cpu Sleeper App works like a charm but was facing reboot issue and that is why had to remove it !!!
See if anyone of you could help me overcome these issue ! or Is this really something for me to worry about !!?????
[PS: Please don't recommend me to change ROM or KERNEL ! Because I prefer to stay on Stock ! Also NOOO Overclockig !]
Check out the Few screen shots i took when my brain kicked me to !!!
We need to see the screen before this one(the one that lists top consumers of battery). To see if something is waking the phone up. Also, charge cycles and calibration are bogus. If anything, you would be using the phone less since you've finally set everything up the way you want and the newness effect has worn off. My battery life has been about the same if my usage pattern remains like it usually does throughout the day. It doesn't really look too bad, but the drops seem a little steeper than what I normally see. . Grab CPUSpy and BetterBatterystats. I'm on my way to work soon, but someone may be able to help you before I go on break.

ok so calibrators and cycles are bogus ! I get that !
What about brightness ? Should that be auto or manual mode ??
And is Google Now causing issue ?? Because its not really useful to me on daily basis !!???
And any other suggestions your would like to share
I was gonna edit my post, actually. I've personally never fully charged and drained my battery for any of my phones(some people swear by it though). I guess if the readings are out of whack then yes. My phone got stuck at 85% for almost 12 hours one day, but I had did something which messed up the OS. Haha.
If you don't use Google Now, you can opt out of it. Brightness is a personal preference. I usually stick mine at 25%. Auto may take a hit on the battery, but I doubt it's anything to worry about. Just the common sense stuff. Apps that poll data in the background will drain the battery, but if they're properly coded, they shouldn't be a problem Running on 4G/LTE/HSPA with a bad signal will drain it more since the radio is trying to find the best possible signal. After a full day of use, what is your typical screen on time? 18 hours is pretty good if you're using it on HSPA all day.
ya honestly that doesnt appear to have anything wrong. What results were you expecting vs what you have? You have a lot of screen on time, that takes a LOT of battery to run the display and using it when brightness is high takes significantly more. Also it appears you have a couple long phone calls in there as well. As far as heat goes, youre going to have that on the higher end phones due to the gpu producing heat and oled displays produce a bit of heat as well, lcd runs cooler.
Weak/unstable/unrealible mobile network signal could cause the fast drain of your battery. I saw you have one bar of hspa signal in the 3rd screenshot.
Those graphs should be much flatter during idle periods. Something is keeping awake. If you're on jelly bean its prob Google now. It does it to everybody.

Actually 3G isn't really well established for Vodafone[or any other company] in India. Also there is a peak going upwards in the first image indicating charging and after having a battery life of around 20 hrs on My Desire S and screen on [appx.] 7 hrs , I'm very disappointed with Jelly Bean !! Also While googling this issue I found out that somebody sniffed the mobile wifi connection to monitor and found some app constantly exchanging packets which according to his test was the root issue for the battery drain !!
Edit:
]Ok I found the way to shut google Now !
I'll records stats for a day or two and get back Thanks Everyone for your time and help

In Google Now >> Menu >> Settings >> Google Now there is an on/off switch at the top. Depending on the ROM it's included as either velvet.apk or QuickSearchBox.apk but removing that would get rid of Google search I think.
Yeah. I think its actually part of search. Like I said, just opt out and you should be good to go. Keep us posted.

You should search around a little to find out some power saving tips, all those notifications you have opened aren't helping. Are you on a custom rom? There's alot that plays in part like screen brightness and sync. I was getting about 10% a hour depending on what I'm doing. There are alot of threads about the same problem so i would suggest trying to find them in search bar and read away. There are alot of tips with some.

You can buy a 10.000€ tablet and the battery will still be crappy if you play Clash of Clans. That game just eats the battery.

Clash of Clans will kill battery quick.I let my girl play Farmville on my tablet and it would shut my tablet down and kill the battery very fast. Also I've learned not to let battery get to low or let it die and shutdown. I felt the same way you did and bought a new one. I use my tablet alot and charged it over 900 times. I didn't get a cheap one and wanted to get a little more expensive one, but what a difference. My tablet lasts alot longer now. Battery's don't last forever and can go bad. I also asked the people what I can do different and they told me to not let it go below 30%. I chose one a little more money cause I didn't want to get a bootleg one from china and have the same thing happen. Maybe root and try a custom rom. They run alot batter then stock and they take alot of stuff out you don't need.
I can confirm that playing games drain battery very quick. turning down the brightness add some minutes.

Battery Plummets Just In Games

I have the SM-T700 and am running latest CM nightly for it. I have noticed in last month or so that the battery absolutely plummets if i play a game. Doesnt seem to matter what game it is but it will drop quick. For example, just went from 70% to about 10% in less than 30 minutes of playing. I can watch videos, browse internet, etc for hours and hours and battery slowly creeps down like normal with no big drops. In the battery stats when it makes the drops it will show the huge drop in the graph but based on the percentages for the different apps it wont show any that are huge battery users (for example: when it just dropped 60% in less than 30 minutes the game i was playing on showed 6% in the battery stats page). Ive seen a few other threads where folks seem to think this is a battery issue but since its only one type of app doing this it has to be a software issue in my opinion. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Does your tablet turn off before the battery level reaches 0%, or big jumps in battery power left, like showing 10% left while gaming, but after gaming it jumps up to say 40%, if so you need to calibrate the battery.
https://www.androidpit.com/how-to-calibrate-the-battery-on-your-android-device
If you have done a lot of heavy gaming on your tablet, it can cause the battery to fail a lot sooner than it normally would, but you say your battery seems fine when you watch video or browse the internet.
The T700 is reported to have an problem with the battery connector becoming loose, which give flickering screen and unexpected shutdowns
John.
Thanks. I will try the calibration on it and see if that helps. I dont game on it much and i dont think its battery failure since it will last nice long time when doing anything else. I havent tried to see if it actually shuts off when it gets to zero so maybe i will try that tonight before the calibration just to see if it does that.
The faster you drain power from a battery the less battery power you get out, example an 1000mah battery if you drain 200ma out of the battery you will get approx 1000mah out of it, but if you drain 500ma from the same battery you might only get 800ma out of it, as the battery chokes with high current drain, but you should not get as massive drains that you get, it`s complicated.

i've tried all kinds of things and still have this issue. very very annoying. can watch videos practically all day on it but the second i run a game the battery drops insanely quick (i watched it once go from 75% to 14% in less than 5 minutes). whats annoying is the battery isnt actually that low. if i let it shutdown when it gets to 0% or restart it myself it will boot back up and say 30,40,50,60+%. The battery is lasting as long as it should doing this stuff but the stupid OS doesnt realize it. Tried recalibrating the battery- didnt help at all. Have updated to latest CM nightlies- didnt help at all. Scoured through the settings to see if there is something that could be doing this- nothing. I was hoping i could download an old CM nightly since i think its a problem in there but cant get one from their website older that a few days ago. I think late June or so it wasnt doing this so it would be nice if i could get one from back then to try. anybody know where i can find those still? (CM website has download links but they all give 404 errors) or does anybody have other suggestions to try and fix this (I am open to other ROMs at this point). Thanks!
You are running on cm try slimlp or blisspop if you're on blisspop under clock CPU to 1.5ghz and done heat problem and little battery problem fix I was on cm played games every games drops 1% every half minute or 1 min
Switched to blisspop and lowered CPU Max to 1.5...... Like blisspop but still same issue. Any other ideas?

ill give that a try maybe. annoying since this isnt too old of a tablet and i really dont use it that much. the battery life is there for everything else, just not games for some reason.
Gaming and other high drain applications can really damage a battery quite quick, Tablets and Phones are not really mean for gaming as the battery`s cannot handle the fast drain.
If it`s still in warranty get it fixed or replaced.
