My buddy got a rooted EVO on craigslist, wants to go back to stock, just feels better without root, doesn't have any interest in rooting, roms, etc.
I rooted my own evo so i have some exp with rooting the phone but was thinking i could just flash update.zip and it would update his phone and unroot.
but two update.zip i dl which were supposed to be official 2.2 did not work, one failed verification/signature cant remember excactly but will post if needed. the other one just gave a strange error.
Do i need to wipe the data/factory reset/or anything special?
Am i to hopeful assuming flashing update.zip will unroot? also if he gets OTA update tomorrow should he accept and will that unroot?
thanks in advance, i tried to do a search on unrooting and found a bunch of dead end options, i tried a few with no success. I was hoping the new update would be the easiest route.
here is a few i tried
sorry to new for links....
did not try this one yet, was hoping the OTA would avoid this:
any insight is greatly appreciated, i have tried to convince him to stay rooted but no luck. if anybody had success with one of the OTA 2.2 update.zip floating around and could share a link it would help me out, i used two different ones with no success.
For the love of god, please search and post in the right forum. There are tons of threads on this, including a new one this evening.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743192
The thread above is even on this PAGE with the subject line of 'How To UN ROOT. TUTORIAL. Your Problems are solved!'.
HOW you missed that is incomprehensible.
PLEASE IF SOMEONE CAN MOVE THIS TO THE PROPER FORUM I WOULD APPRECIATE IT, I MESSED UP AND POSTED INCORRECTLY. thank you...
I searched the forums, I tried to post the links of many options available for unrooting the phone, I don't have the privileges to post links.
The one you posted I DID SEE I should have been more direct, I was looking to see if the new OTA update will update the phone to 2.2 and unroot the phone, since its not my phone i don't want to spend to much time on it or simply pass the info on to him.
I was NOT IN ANYWAY looking to be directed to another source for unrooting or lead to a link, what i could not find was if the new ota will be the easiest route. I had him try two run two of what I had believed were the newest ota update.zip with no success.

Hey guys I'm sure this has been answered before but I did some looking around on the q&a and didn't find my answer.. I bought my evo on its launch day and now I'm ready to root it but am haigh some problems. I read a few different root write ups and I have the zip file downloaded and saved to my sd card, but when I go to the boot loader screen it doesn't run the file and and ask me to flash or reboot. It pulls up the filer only for a couple of seconds then does nothing. I downloaded the update from sprint about a week ago for the updated 2.1, was that bad? Lol.in the write ups I read they all said something about not downloading any off the updates sprint sent but I already had it downloaded before I decided I wanted to root it but any help would be great. Thanks guys.
Ok, real quick if you have version 1.47 then follow one of the rooting guides for 1.47. The pcimg that you have to first put on your SD card works like this: power off, volume plus power to get to boot screen. When you get to the white screen, it will scan the SD for the pcimg, once it is done analyzing the file it should ask you if you want to flash or reboot. Select the option flash image. Then follow the rest of the tutorial.
Ps. You should check out the dev forum for a root guide, not here.
I have read a few different root guides. And I have followed the steps. When I power on with the power and volume button the boot loader comes up and reads the file but doesn't ask if I wasn't to flash it. That's where the problem is and that's why I posted in the q&a.
Sorry I read your post incorrectly I will see if I can come up with an answer for you
What is your software version and what root guide are you using?
I got 1.47 firmwear version 2.1 update 1.and I got the guide from the android advancement forum on this site.
Well, you have the newest update so you will have to use one of the new rooting guide in the dev forum. I will try to dig up a link for you. Not sure if that's the reason your bootloader won't read the image but I know the older root methods don't work with the newest ota
Here is one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718889
Sorryit was or of the evo 4g android development forum.
so should I delete the zip files I have already downloaded and start fresh with this link? And will I need a comp for this guide? I wanted to just do it all on my phone.
Yes if you use that guide use the files provided. Also, for that guide you do need a computer. I thought I heard there were two methods for rooting the new ota, but I have not read it. You can most likely find it in the dev forum
Ok man sweet thanks I'll see if I can make it work now.

I am coming off a bricked phone so I am a little apprehensive about trying to root without a clear guide, especially froyo since it just got rooted from my understanding. I am sorry if this isnt in the right section, I really couldnt tell if this belonged in the General forum as it is a question, or if it belonged in the development as it is regarding Root/Roms. I would appreciate any help, and even any remarks on how I am misposting in this forum .
There is no root for froyo if you installed the official updates. You can try the previous methods but I doubt they work. You may be sol until someone decides to work on finding an exploit but I doubt that happens until there is an official release. The only rooted froyo that is out is for people who were rooted prior to froyo. Sorry.
If you have Froyo OTA (from Sprint) installed, you cannot yet root it (if/when someone releases root instructions). You have to already have your phone rooted with nand access and then install one of the rooted Froyo updates (there are two right now, from Avalaunch and netarchy). As well, there is a AOSP FROYO from cyanogenmod.
The wiki from toastcfh for this forum gives all sorts of instructions and options for rooting. Good luck.

So please don't murder me for this question, i'm a noob coming from a pre.
I updated(or i should say my phone automatically updated) the 2.1 sprint image from the last update with the SD card Fix. This was before I got to this forum about rooting, etc.
Are my options to only go to the sprint store and get a replacement phone if I want to root now? Or is there a way to backtrack.
I tried to root last night but kept getting daemon errors when trying to connect to the phone. :S

What software version are you running? From homescreen go to menu>settings>about phone>software information and give me your software #.
1.47.165.1
I thought I could with this, because this is what the simpleroot software is showing in the program.
I did a full erase also last night with the volume down power button trick.
search for simpleroot 1.47 either on google, youtube, or here. there are loads of vids and tutorials
Also, there is a Q & A forum and would suggest you use that next time you have a question. You'll get your ass handed to you for posting in the dev section.

Yea I know. I didnt post this thread. i just posted IN it.
I tried simpleroot and it didnt work. I just wanted to confirm that it COULD work, instead of playing around with it aimlessly for hours. Only to find my phone was locked.

Simpleroot is the best option to root v1.47. Unrevoked has known issues, AVOID it. Simpleroot was made from my earlier posting & guide of manually rooting 1.47, so I know it works. WATCH THE VIDEO he made!! It practically cups your nuts the entire way thru the process with both PC & EVO screen videos. Once you do simpleroot, I recommened doing toast's part 2. Right after that do a nandroid backup. Then apply one of the rooted Froyo ROMs posted in the dev forum (there are both odex and deodex versions posted).
However (as already stated numerous times in numerous threads) if you apply the OTA update, your screwed.
So, I just got my DInc a few days ago and they did the OTA update at the store while setting up my phone. After 4 days of searching and trying to downgrade, I think I may have found, or figured out a way to downgrade to stock 2.2 without having s=off.
First thing is, the 2nd video on this thread shows how to downgrade if you did the unofficial OTA update, and provides a link for the files. Basically it seems to be a way to downgrade the hboot.
My question is this....if I was to follow that guide and do the down grade that way, would it be possible to the update zip from here, or use the one from this forum here, without basically bricking the phone?
I've rooted my fiances Droid 2 without any problems, and I've done a great deal of console modding and checking out firmware in computers and consoles and from what I gather, it seems that this would work in downgrading from the OTA update and being able to get root and not have problems. My problem is that I don't know much about the DInc enough to try it without an input from people that do know.
Any thoughts or ideas? Or anyone willing to try it and let me know? lol
Sorry for the outside links, but I couldn't find all the info on the forums here.
Unrevoked should have a solution to rooting the OTA ready for release within the next day or two. I'd wait for that rather than trying other untested methods.
That's possible, but then again, they may not be having any luck, or might come up with a similar mehod. Nothing is ever tested on the first try lol.
Im hoping someone else has either tried this, or knows enough about it to say if it will work or not. If I can get my phone rooted this way and not have to wait for Unrevoked to do it, that's ok with me lol.
It would work if you had an s-off hboot but I believe this method was already proven not to work with the s-on hboot as it doesn't allow downgrading. You'll get a message similar to "newer version found on device" or something to that effect.
Edit: The video in the link says you have to already be rooted to do this so no it won't work.
Not the first video, the 2nd one. Where it uses the sdk to push the files through.

This is correct! Verified on my thread and verified on my twitter.
Someone else has mentioned this on another forum, thought I'd give a heads up here

Think it's just smoother playback on 720p video from what someone on the Vodafone forum said...they never have change logs to updates so other than that no idea
should I
Think i will hold off i got stung by vodafone last time who filled my phone with there 360 crap
Confirmed on Vodafone website from others who've downloaded it that there is NO Vodafone gumpf so you're good to go

I got it just now and can't find any changes yet...
The update file is 30.8MB. It's a big file for not changing much.
would someone please root this one and make it with superuser and the usual stuff? interests me very much - thanks in advance
Why not just flash it and then root it again?
Does anyone knows what has exactly been changed???
Read the thread I posted up there...
"Hi Guys
I have got the HTC Desire, but haven't updated it yet, as I want to back up my information first.
The information that I have been given is that the improvement included an upgrade to Adobe Flash 10.1 for better video play, addition of Google security patches, the latest Gmail client, and a few bugs have been ironed out from the previous update.
I hope you all enjoyed the latest update.

Yeah I want to but I can't find the update??
I can't seem to update this. I get a signature verification error and failed install.
I've tried downloading a number of times.
Is this because I've rooted the phone?
TIA
Yes it is, you need to be unrooted. You can try turning off signature checking in Clockwork Mod but it might go a bit funny
How can I do this update? My phone is rooted. Do I just unroot, update, reroot? Thanks
You can't 'unroot' without wiping all data as you have to use an RUU. Fortunately there is this RUU now available in ROM Development so you can just flash it
Find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853937
How do I flash it, just run it? When I flash it what happens? Do I still have ClockWorkMod installed or do I have to reroot?
Hi,
I just got the phone and have looked thru the forums and I have yet to find a definitive thread on how to root a ATT Samsung S3. Can someone point me in the right direction as the root hits I find all say my phone needs to be a I9300 and mine is a I747.
Also does anyone know what was fixed in the OTA updated that came out 4.0.4? Will this affect me being able to root the phone?
Thanks in advance...Todd

HEY!
Ok so im not completely sure which update 4.0.4 is but I think there has only been one so far right? the one that nerfs google search. Anyway, Here is a link to the guide that i used (after I did the update) and i followed the steps and the comment posted by danK in the comments. He said "If you’ve updated to newer software update, the stock OS will over-write ClockworkMod Recovery on reboot. To fix this, make sure “auto-reboot” is checked off in ODIN, then take the battery out when it’s done flashing in ODIN. Then enter ClockworkMod Recovery right away. " Doing this let me root my phone with zero issues.

(sorry it said i could not post links yet but this is the URL but without brackets)
Thanks for the link, that is only how to flash clockworks mods, how do you root the phone? Can anyone share that info?
Welcome to XDA.
First of all, if you had looked in the Dev section you would have found what you were looking for.
