I searched and didn't find the answer. I perform a dalvik cache wipe via Clockwork and I don't get any confirmation it did anything. It just sends me back to the previous menu screen. Is this normal?

which version? the older versions of clockwork had a bug that it didnt actually work to clear dalvik but if you update to the newest one available it does now (easiest way is just to install rom manager and let it update it for you)
mine doesn't show anything either. it pauses for a few seconds though so i'm assuming that it does it i've got 2.5.0.1 which i think is the newest one for the EVO.
I have ClockworkMod 2.5.0.1
It says it's the latest version
Mine does the same thing
What's a few extra seconds to make sure the dalvik is emptied?

On the Evo, the Dalvik cache is located in the /data directory, which is itself completely wiped when you do a data wipe / factory reset. If you do this first, then try the Dalvik wipe, it will just go back with no pause or confirmation. If you try to wipe Dalvik before wiping /data, it may pause a bit longer (0.7 seconds, maybe) and then return with no confirmation.
Either way, if you do a /data wipe you will be wiping Dalvik, but upgrade CWM if you're worried about it.

Its a personal preference. I use clockworkmod recovery and have never had any issues, except with Fresh Roms. Besides that it has worked well with all of the other roms (I have tried nearly all of them).
hey thanks for the reply all right i don't mind what one i use as long as it works so i will stick with it.

As mentioned above, he did have any issue with Clockwork...except with....*sigh*
Amon works with everything with no issue. Amon recovery is the way to go.

yeah i have to admit i like amon cause u can mount threw usb while in recover to throw on roms because sometimes i get to excited and shut down my phone before i put the rom on...
Unless that feature is in clock but i didn't see it
Clockworks delvik wipe does not wipe delvik.. its a known problem.. use RA recovery..

ClockworkMod DOES indeed wipe the dalvik cache. I think the reason why many people are confused is that it only takes a second or two for the dalvik cache to wipe on CWM, whereas it takes longer on RA. However, the reasoning behind this is simple- most people wipe the cache partition before wiping the dalvik cache. When you wipe the cache partition, you are wiping everything on that partition, including the dalvik cache. So in essence, when people go to the Advanced menu in CWM to directly wipe the dalvik cache, they are essentially wiping a blank folder.
If you don't believe me, try this:
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Go to the CWM partitions menu and mount the cache partition
3. adb shell
4. cd /cache/dalvik-cache
5. Type "ls-a" and note all the files.
6. Exit adb shell
7. Wipe the cache partition in CWM
8. adb shell
9. cd /cache
10. Type "ls-a". This time there should be no dalvik-cache directory.

huh so u just have to wipe in a certain order? well thats a good thing to know.
Am wondering, as I cannot really remember, does it say that Dalvik was wiped with Clockwork? I noticed the night I was running into some issues with wiping, that after hitting to wipe Dalvik it never seemed to even say anything after. Would just sit there ... but I could understand about the order of wiping, but wouldn't it just immediately "wipe the blank" but still say done/complete?
That's when I realized something wasn't happening as I could have sworn before it said wipe complete or something. I may be wrong, but am only wondering. Was then I hit these boards and saw a post about clockwork not wiping Dalvik and I just figured that mine was having the same issues as whoever was talking about it that night.
So I rooted my phone for the dumbest reason...so I could take screen shots lol anyways, it's been freezing up with the texting and stuff. I was wondering if there is anyway to unroot it. Please someone help.
That's a funny reason to root your phone.....anyway, just flash a stock rom. Make sure you wipe first.

What is wiping
Boot into recovery (hold volume down and power at the same time, after white bootloader screen appears, select recovery), now in recovery select wipe data/factory reset, then select wipe cache, then select advanced, then wipe dalvik cache - wiping dalvik is optional in clockworkmod, since it is already wiped in the previous steps (this is the menu and steps for clockworkmod recovery, RA recovery is similar)
Anytime you flash a new rom or kernel, wiping gives you a clean slate helping prevent future issues.

When flashing a new ROM using ROM Manger, if you choose the wipe data option does this wipe the Dalvik cache too?
I have seen posts saying it doesn't, but when I watch the text that appears on the phone's screen during flashing it does seem to be wiping the Dalcik cache.
Does anyone know?
I was wondering if selecting the wipe data option is the same as doing a total wipe first like you can do if you flash manually from recovery.
No one know?
I have been doing some googling and found similar threads and I think that it does clear the Dalvik cache but I am not 100% sure.
Not as far as I know, but I have been wrong before. Just clear the cache manually before flashing.

I've just rooted my phone and now require a ROM which doesn't have sense UI, what one would be my best option?
Thanks
Anything with AOSP in the title
and CM7, cant forget that
The best vanilla Rom I have tried is redux, I found it much quicker than ginger villain.

I just tried to flash gingervillian on my phone but I think I must have made a mistake somewhere as it got to the gingervillian load screen and then just got caught in a loop where it'd just replay the animation of it. I then had to do a restore to sort my phone out.
I did follow the unlockr guide but it doesn't help that the guy is using an Evo instead of a Desire and the menu's are totally different in the Clockworkmod screen.
At one point he says you need to wipe the dalvik cache but I couldn't find this so just wiped the cache. So this might have been the problem? Also do you need to wipe anything else at this point?
You need to wipe everything, what recovery are you using - CWM or AmonRA?
I'm using the CWM recovery.
Dunno then, in AmonRA you choose 'Wipe' and all options are in there. Must be something similar in CWM
I've checked again and I have two wipe menus:
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
(under this I have: Delete all user data)
2. Wipe Cache Partition
(in this I have: Wipe cache)
Hmmm, not as many as AmonRA - find that surprising but probably better to see what someone else says

After you do the first 2 wipe's go to advanced its the last menu and do wipe dalvik cache, after that it should work fine...
Cheers

What do you mean by after I do the first two wipes?
Do I delete user data, wipe cache and also then wipe dalvik cache.
Thanks.
Yes. A "full wipe" means wiping the User data/cache/dalvik cache. So wipe all three:
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
2. Wipe Cache Partition
3. Wipe dalvik cache
The order does not matter.
Ah OK thanks.
I don't like the sound of having to 'wipe/ delete all user' data though, does this mean I'll lose all my contacts, calender entries, notes etc?
Yes, but if coming from another ROM you HAVE to do it. Do a nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM and backup any other data using Titanium Backup
I'm not coming from another ROM but regardless I'll do the Titanium backup and do the three wipes and try it again.

Well I've done it and unfortunately have been having alot of hassle trying to get it to be stable. These are the two main issues:
1. I can't seem to get psx4droid to work properly. When I go to load a game by selecting its data.bin file the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns to the select screen, instead of firing up the game. Does psx4droid actually run on gingervillain?
2. Also I have the other extremely annoying issue where if I turn my phone off it will not get any further than the gingervillain splash screen and just freezes on it. The only way passed this is to then go into CWM and wipe all the user data again!
Can anyone help with these two problems?
Use Oxygen 2.0.1 and download ADW Launcher, sounds like what you want, i have flashed just about all the ROM's and i reckon Oxygen is the best, then use UOT Kitchen to make some cool mods and ADW Launcher EX speeds it up alot also.
Plus its very stable and you wont get any boot loops or anything.
Hey all,
I've been searching for a while now and decided I should just post my question finally. I have the Galaxy SIII, rooted, and running CM10 stable. For the last 3 months or so, my SMS app, Messaging, has been randomly force closing and crashing. The only way to fix it is by rebooting the phone. I've tried re-flashing the mod 5 times, and even wiped data and done 2 factory resets. Still no luck.
And more recently my "phone" app has been doing it too. It crashes when I open up the dial pad and drops calls randomly and I have to restart my phone for it to work again.
Both of these will happen randomly. Sometimes I can go 4 hours without having to restart my phone, other times I have to restart my phone every 20 minutes. It's really starting to bug me.
Is there an app that's known to cause these crashes? Or is there a possibility that the mod file is corrupt? Thoughts? Questions? Any help is appreciated!!
When you flashed Cm10, did you come from stock or a custom rom? Did you also format /system?
If you made a nandroid while on stock, I would:
Wipe data, cache, dalvik and restore that. Then (assuming you still have Cm10 and gapps zips on your device) I would wipe data and caches again, format /system and flash rom/gapps. Wipe data/cache and reboot.

When I flashed, it was from a previous CM10 ROM that worked fine. I reflashed because one of my apps was getting an "unknown" error, and now this crashing is happening. I don't think I have ever done "format /system". How do I go about that?

To have a completely clean install, you should always:
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik (under advanced)
Format /system (under mounts and storage)
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Wipe data
Reboot
Be sure to have whatever you feel important backed up as this will wipe your system. Make a nandroid first if you don't already have one

Thanks!! I'll try it tonight and post with the results tomorrow. Last time I flashed it took 2 days until the problems arose again.

There shouldn't be any issues if you have flashed correctly. Many users have also noted that a custom rom performs better when returning to stock and then flashing the new rom via the above procedures. Feel free to pm me your results
What the???

I can't see this is a good thing, but I'm a noob.
You're saying after installing the new ROM and apps (Flash rom Flash gapps), you then go back into CWM and select 'wipe data/factory reset'??
Again, I'm a noob and maybe I'm reading this wrong!
Doing a wipe again right after installing a new ROM sounds so wrong to me.
What would that do?

This step (step 7 in your list) isn't necessary.
When in doubt, follow the directions in the OP of the rom you are trying to flash, usually can't go wrong.
