I have a few applications (Juiceplotter for example) that store some graphic files on the SD card.
When I view the gallery, I don't want to see these graphs. (I also have an issue with MP3s from Lets Golf and the music player)
Can I hide these directories by adding a "." to the name of the folder without effecting the actual application?

yes, that should work.
pr0nz !
Yeah that's what some people are doing to hide folders ... folders with sensitive pictures. Stealth folder.
doesn't work.
While it does hide the folder form the gallery, it also hides it from the application. So the application pukes.
there is a way to prevent the media scanner from scanning folders, something like putting a blank/empty 'noscan' file in the folder.
Maybe someone else will remeber the exact filename, otherwise I'll repost when I have it.
edit:
try an empty text file '.nomedia' in the folders you want not scanned

that would be great if there is a way to do that.
If you do find it, please share.

this... this is very useful.
There's an app called HideNSeek for 99 cents. It's supposed to be used by playas that don't want various girls to see pics of other various girls in the gallery (it's even disguised as a flashlight app), but I think most people use it to block regular folders/pics (like album art) from showing up in the gallery.

Don't do that ! Or be aware of the consequences.
If you put a .nomedia empty file in your folder in order to prevent the Gallery from loading pictures, it will also prevent any media players (ex : music player, winamp, meridian, etc...) from scanning these folders to find music !
So, I still don't know how to prevent Gallery from showing pictures in music folders (because I prefer having a "polluted" Gallery than a useless music player!).
I'm quite sure the File Manager app that comes with CM6.1 includes the ability to "exclude from Media Scan" on any folder. Haven't tried it myself. I like my nudies exposed at all times.
+1 for .nomedia!
Theres also a vault app that hides your pics and videos
I hate to ressurect an old thread but I can't find an answer anywhere. How do I exclude album art from the gallery in AOSP ROMs without also disabling music files or the album art in a music app? I have several GBs of music and hundreds of album art files that pollute my gallery.
Thanks in advance.
I have a similar issue and I am going mad with my 1000s of media art showing on my gallery. There should be a way to manually assign afolder for indexing.
Why don't you use . (Dot) if you want to hide anything (etc .Pictures)? Adding dot in front of the name will make folder as hidden and will be visable only via some app (root explorer, bluetooth file transfer)

why it becomes so complicated??
you dont need to rename any folder.
just place .nomedia file in folder which contain files you don't want people to see. (i.e pr0n)
don't place it on your camera (DCIM) or music folder, thus gallery app still can access it.
chmod will do it.

Its complicated because in different case its not that simple, for example I have many deep rooted folder structure which have links to 1 master html page (actually its an offline html site where the pix are sliced) now i keep on changing over writing this folder structure so as per suggestion I will need to create .nomedia file & copy in all the sub folders>sub folders right upto the last directory. Gallery in this case index 1000s sliced images & polluting the whole gallery.
Even if I do this once I will have to do it again as it will get modified when I overwrite.
Best would be (if possible) I create a master folder & tell gallery not to index any media for all the folders & sub folder from this master folder. So I copy the folder=file in thsi master folder if i don't need them to be indexed in gallery.
But what do I do for the music album art? the media player needs to display the art so if i put .nomedia file will the music player be able to display it & the gallery wont index it?
I am yet to try this solution.
seriously dudes between chmod and chown you should be able to do anything you want. If the app tanks or ? you might have to write a small script. Worst case scenario you could probably put files on a different partition and crate a symbolic link to it.
I recently flashed my EVO from CM6 over to the alpha Gingerbread Rom. No issues there, love the new ROM but one thing I noticed was that anytime I scroll over to my Gallery, it says I do not have any pics or vids to view. Same issue when i go to my music app, no music. But I can open up Linda Manager or File Manager and all my pics, vids, and music is there. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I am lost!

What folder are they are in on your SD card? And when you take new pictures do they show up in the gallery or not their either? It may be that the Gallery is somehow not detecting pictures, or the old pictures are just not in a place where it can.
HELP!!
I am having this same problem with my phone. I am rooted with unrevoked 3 and now when I take a pic it will show up in my gallery until i reboot my phone then they dont. I can plug my phone up to my computer and they are in the DCMI folder on my sd card. When I unplug my phone from the computer and go back in to my phone they are not there. What would be causing this? I have not put any roms on my phone or changed any kernels.
It's probably a really odd SD card issue. Try going into settings & unmounting then mounting the sd card again. If that doesn't work it could be an issue with the media scanner. Download an app that lets you manually run the media scanner. I know Widgetsoid 2.x has a media scanner toggle. If you can't find another way, download the app & make a 1x1 toggle widget with the media scanner, apply, and tap it.
If that doesn't work, I'm stumped.
I tried that but I couldnt get the widget to actually do anything. Thank you though
I believe the sdcard is the cause, because I've had a similar issue myself and fixed it. I would suggest either re-flashing the rom, or backing up your sdcard and then formatting it, and copy it back over. Also, if you have, in particular, a folder with a lot of pictures in it, I had one with like 300+ because it was an animation, that too slowed it down.
Did you check the folders to make sure there aren't .nomedia files in them? I'm not quite sure how they would get there unless an app put them there.
Have you removed any system files? If so, you could've removed something that keeps the media scanner from running, or possibly removed the media scanner altogether.
Last idea - have you tried opening the files from the sd card to their respective apps? Open the images with the gallery & maybe they'll show up?
Last, last idea - if you're using stock apps, try downloading a third party gallery and/or music player. I use QuickPic, it's fast & caches images so if you can get them to show up in app, they should remain after a reboot.
I'm tapped out of ideas :/
Hello.
After restarting phone i can not see pictures and videos in the Gallery. it's empty. I have seen there is no .nomedia file. Then i have captured some pictures and they are appear in the Gallery but old pictures not. i can see they from file manager. how can i return my old gallery??
p.s. i have no memory card
p.s.2 my phone is Motorola Droid Razr M - android 4.4.2
Is there a way to add specific folders to the music player? On my phone, the player automatically adds voicenotes and audio from whatsapp which is pretty annoying. I would like it to choose only the music folder.
anyone?
Put a blank file in the folder named .nomedia
This will prevent android from scanning the folder for any media (music, pics, videos, etc)

I am really surprised to see that .nomedia had any desired effect in your case. I'm trying to exclude those files in my WhatsApp folders from appearing in my Galaxy s3 music player as well as in the gallery. I can do whatever I want, these files ALWAYS are visible.
When trying QuickPic i am able to exclude mentioned folders and no pictures apper in the QuickPic gallery, but they do prominently appear in the Gallery app. the same goes for audio files. I tried to exclude them from DoubleTwist media player. Actually they never appear there, no matter i have a .nomedia file placed or not.
I have no understanding, which folders are scanned for media. And I cannot say that ALL folders are scanned because that would mean my mp3-ringtones under Ringtones shall appear in my music player media list?
So for me it is hard to believe that the .nomedia trick will do the desired effect (keeping WhatsApp media files out of my galleries and media players).
Actually browsing the web a bit, it seems I am not alone with this experience and I am surprised, that there is no clear description about that ominous .nomedia file. I do not say it has no effect (it does have in QuickPic - but that is about all), but not the effect everyone is talking about.
So I am really curious how you managed to have those files eliminated from your media lists (gallery, music player) by simply putting the .nomedia file in the respective directory
Thanks
mtfh
The .nomedia file did the trick just fine on the S3 mini. Thank you.
@mtfh: a late answer but, after creating the .nomedia file, try restarting the phone. Also, I guess it depends whether your (music player/photo gallery) app reads for .nomedia files to ignore those directories. In my case, I created with ES File Explorer a .nomedia in the following locations:
WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Audio/
removed the audio files from the stock music player
WhatsApp/Media/WallPaper/
removed the whatsapp custom wallpaper folder in the stock photo gallery
As for:
WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images/
I actually liked having that folder in the photo gallery to check all whatsapp pictures in one place (without opening whatsapp itself), so I left this folder intact.

I know I am going to seem dumb as dirt, but we just got our first smart phone a few months ago. I am learning a lot with it, but I just cant figure out how to do this. I can figure out how to tap the lower left corner while in my files to create a folder. But for the life of me I cant figure out how to do this. If I click on the music note on my player it brings up a list of all my music and the ringtones, but I cant do anything with them other than shuffle them or delete. I cant find a specific folder with all ringtones in it. I have dl a couple of apps that have ringtones. Can anyone give me a step by step?

Hey there, follow the instructions in this link, very useful and graphic.

Rgds,

I have a chat app on my device that can save received photos locally. The photos are stored in /sdcard/(appname)/images. I prefer that those images do not show up in Gallery, so I placed a .nomedia file in /sdcard/(appname)/ and also in the images subdirectory.
However I noticed after the upgrade to 4.2, when I saved a photo from chat, an "images" album appeared in Gallery with just that one photo in it (and not the others in the directory). I long pressed and chose Details to verify, and indeed it's a photo in the images directory that has a .nomedia file (the exact path it lists is /storage/emulated/0/(appname)/images)
I tried forcing a few media rescans. It's sticking around. Something I tried yesterday resulted in one of said images getting hidden again from Gallery but I can't seem to reproduce that with a newer image.
Has anyone else experienced this? It seems that perhaps the chat app explicitly published the photo to the media database, and in <4.2 the .nomedia file prevented it from staying there, but in 4.2 it appears.
Nobody just gets respect, first the .nomedia files have to earn respect. jk
QuickPic will let you hide the folders w/o using .nomedia files.
It would appear that QuickPic's feature to hide photos from Gallery uses .nomedia files as well. And I don't want to be using a 3rd party gallery.

I believe there are two ways to do it within the app - HIDE & EXCLUDE. One of these does not use .nomedia i believe.
The reason is because I use PowerAmp and it downloads album art, but I dont want that showing in mt gallery.. Quickpic hides the folders so I dont see them, and because PowerAmp still uses the album art, I dont think it's placing .nomedia files.

Hide uses a .nomedia file to hide it from all galleries. Exclude means QuickPic won't show it but has no effect on other apps.
Anyway it seems that renaming the photo and rescanning does the job. Once it finds the old photo path is dead, it doesn't re-add the new path.

Okay good deal.:good: Yeah I knew the "exclude" feature doesn't work in other apps, there are allot of people that like QuickPic better than the stock gallery, thought it was worth a try you might too. It works perfect for me just for the hiding folders w/o using .nomedia.
All my music albums are appearing in the gallery and i have hundreds of music albums !! (Didnt happen in my old samsung phone which was very latest too - A70) - And, i have confirmed its a one UI 2.0 thingy.
I have songs with custom Albumarts embedded transferred from PC to Mobile.
create a .nomedia file in the music folder and it will stop the pictures from appearing OR in the gallery app click menu settings and hide the folders

Do it like this:
If you have all your music files in a folder called Music, rename the folder by adding a dot to the folder name with a file explorer app. (like this: .Music)
This way the albumart isn't visible in gallery (have done this myself)
Keep in mind that some music player apps aren't able to find the music in the folder when done the above.
In my case Pulsar+ couldn't find my music in the folder if I let it scan for music.
Omnia (from the same developer as Pulsar+ is working fine tho.
With Omnia I have to manually tell Omnia in which folders contain music.
While Pulsar+ just scans the phone for folders containg musicfiles and I can add exclusions afterwards.
Keep in mind also that some file explorer apps can't find the folder after you have added the dot in front of the folder name.
I am using Solid Explorer and have to enable 'show hidden folders' in the app settings after I have added the dot.

Now, the albums are neither appearing in my gallery nor on my samsung music player

I am sorry to hear that my suggestion didn't work for you.
Then i would suggest to revert the changes you have done and hide the folders containing albumart in the gallery app itself, like user brunsman6229 suggested.
