So How Old Are The Evo Hackers? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For curiosity's sake, I'm interested to see what the breakdown is of people that come to XDA looking to hack their Evo 4Gs are.
I think we get all kinds here, and I have a weird feeling that it would be extremely unwise to underestimate how many of the talented folks that contribute here are unable to vote just yet

I'm 26 and some of the people here make me feel old. Anyone else remember Compuserve?

Poll added. Results will be anonymous...other than I do remember compuserve and the walled gardens of AOL, Juno, and the like.
I remember ****ting bricks the first time I found a "3000+ hours" free AOL floppy.

27 and totally not above punching a tween. They usually have it coming.
PS. If you really wanna feel old, play anything on xbox live with a headset.

ahh the sweet old days of JUNO and dial-up internet, 23

Lol i remember the first time I used AOL 1.5

Anybody remember USENET, listserves, and newsgroups? Mosaic? Ha-ha I'm almost 25. "Much too young to feel this damn old" as Garth once said.

22
My first PC ran windows 3.1. Anyone remember Q basic? DOS?? I equated Compuserve with the internet.

I was born in the 1950's, and have been using, and owned, computers since 1982. At that time, I thought I was late to the game.......

29
OS/2 Warp! I miss the days of dot matrix printers that sounded like you were chewing on tin foil. My favorite part was taking the perforated sides with the holes off of the sheets of paper and folding the things up like an accordion.

34..........see my signature, my first device was a Motorola teletac 250

I'm 20 my first true web experience was the dreamcast. I do remember in school lusting over the G3 and being amped whhen a PC had windows 98 even though it all felt the same 95 and 98 that is

I think mine was a Motorola to, in the 80's, it was a bag phone, with a full 3 watts

27 and can remember getting kicked off AOL (yeah I know) god knows how many times for trolling and writing Progs. VB6 was new and Red Hat + a cable modem could make a ton of money as a server for porn sites.
Not to mention all the trouble you could find using mIRC and going out phreaking.

23 Here. Ahhhh the AOL days. Remember when AOL was so ubiquitous companies would just advertise AOL keywords instead of websites on tv commercials?

Old? Well my first computer was a commodore 64 and it was badass!

Haha, I'm 25 and can also remember getting kicked off Aol, mostly because I used the annoying spam-chat programs that you could preset to type certain things over and over, I remember you could also get kicked out of AOL chatrooms (and AOL itself) just for cursing or being rude.
I remember finding a way to set my 28.8 kbps modem to 33.1 or something like that and feeling so cool that I could get slightly higher speeds.

Damn am I the youngest so far ? I'm about to be 20, and I felt old. But yes I still remember when aol was the only thing to connect to. And aim was the only way to chat, and macs were still cheap napster had all the porn I ever needed, good times

32, and I recall the debate, whether vic128 was better than c64 (128 is double 64, right?). I'd have to think the majority of us are old enough to afford these, and young enough (at heart) to desire to hack it. Most tweens are likely running the garden variety ipown...

Need a uploader man..... LOL

My computer can't upload anything now, since it has become old. It would freeze if I would upload a ROM anywhere.
This is why I use my phone to upload my Roms, using Minus app or 4shared app.
I need a person who can upload to maybe, Mediafire, immediately after I've uploaded mine to 4shared or Minus.
This is so people will get a Mirror and not have any problems with downloading
Thanks guys
Peteragent, computers don't slow down significantly without cause...
An updated or new piece of software (be it an application, server or driver) could be the culprit. Malware perhaps?
Bloated registry with too many left-over entries?
IDE HDD controller reverting to PIO mode? (Depending on the vintage of your rig.)
HDD seek/read errors?
Thermal throttling? What are your temperatures at idle like? Under load? Dust-covered heat sinks and degraded thermal paste could have a role.
Your (maybe new?) friends:
SpeedFan (checks both temperatures and S.M.A.R.T hard disk drive trend monitoring)
HighJackThis (careful!)
CCleaner (privacy tools, but also a decent registry cleaner)
Memtest86+ (RAM error testing)
Prime95 (CPU stress test)
Good luck,
Darkshado
You could always try using an ubuntu live cd/usb if it can't upload then, it's the hardwired ;-)

But it's my Dad's computer (the only one) that has lived after 20 years of Restoring and Restoring...
After all that, I know its time is limited, because I get a Cylic Rendundancy Check EError from time to time, and I found out that the Hard Disk became old and unable to use anymore (but I still am using it)
Thanks to all of you for volunteering a replying here! 'D
20 years? Sure that's not a typo?
(20 years ago my family's sole PC computer was an 486DX2 machine running at a whopping 66 MHz with 8MB of RAM. It had been upgraded from a 386 33 MHz processor around that time, its original configuration; including a 100MB HDD and 4MB of RAM going back to 1990. AT form factor, not ATX.)
Or is it like the story of the axe you've had for years; changed the handle three times and the head twice, but it's still the same axe?
Stop using the computer until you've made backups. Seriously.
Like it or not, you're going to need some new hardware. Probably a hard drive, but do yourself a favor and test the RAM too.
How old is your power supply? Motherboard? Depending on the quality of the components and the stresses they've been subjected to, you may start seeing failures of those as well.
Ehhh, yeah I think I made a typo. What I meant to say was 30 years.
Huh? Why are you talking about Axe's? Stay on topic here...!
Ohhhh do you mean that stinky perfume Axe? I think that's fake, it doesn't attract girls! Are they crazy? Plus, it smells bad
My Dad always Restores cause my brother and I keep wrecking the computer LOL. Plus my Dad says that it's still good if you use it only for media and browsing... Lol but I use it for developing. That's the only Computer we have... Except the one my parents secretly hide/keep from us in their bedroom... Lol I did use to have an Ok Laptop, but my brother went on a rampage and squeezed water from soaked toilet paper to our Laptop LOL. This was before i got a phone and checked out XDA.
All the components of my computer (My Dad's Laptop) is worn out and old... Lol

Yup I am saving up money! But whenever I see food, my money from my wallet ends up paying for the Food LOL
I want a Desktop like koush's... LOL
If not, I want a HP Envy
I've sworn some time ago to never give another cent of my money to HP. Bad customer support experience. That bad. Short version: Printer drivers stubbornly picking A4 when they should pick Letter.
I know pretty much exactly what I want in my next laptop, and the machines that fit the bill are far and few in between.
Right now I'm waiting a few more days for the Ivy Bridge chips to come out, and *maybe* the next AMD 7000 series mobile GPUs. (Although Optimus weighs heavily in favor of nVidia in my case. And ATI drivers haven't provided me with a good experience in the past.)

Definitely not DS3 last i checked that doesn't push anything near this. I wouldn't have a clue though I remember working for a company that had DS1/T1 back when that was fast lol oh so long ago. Some sort of Optical Carrier line. The data center belongs to InterNAP and i know they actually invented or hold patents to some of the technology they use in their own backbone across the nation.
I rent from a game server provider. The rack has a 10Gbe to the data center and I am throttled to 1Gbps. Its actually pretty difficult to hit a speed test site that can even handle the bandwidth. I mean plenty of data centers and test sites near there.
Id have to take several 50 to 100 Mbps clients across the country to even try to push it real world. It sustains a little over 100 Mbps day to day under peak times from the few downloaders I have. I mean my peaks are very mild. I can't afford the transfer bandwidth to go along with such a fast connection. I mean id rather have unmetered on 100 Mbps I guess but 1Gbps gives me the potential to help out on a very fast but very small scale.

HAHAHA, Server 2008 R2 actually though I do have the desktop experience installed just not enabled. We were joking awhile back about doing WiFi speed tests with our E4GT's so id love to slap a N450 router on that network and have a go. But im assuming the E4GT only does 1x1 so its limited to 150Mbps if even that.
I am ALWAYS on the server and my home desktop using my cell. I get calls from Korey, etc and change server config's on the fly. Pocket Cloud works great for RDP but I was using the Android VNC for VNC. I use Team Viewer for my home pc it of course won't let you install it on a server without a commercial license.

This guy is a complete idiot! Waste of my time especially with the Windows Mobile reference and the Gmail app piece. And he says Windows Mobile never compared to Android. It's because Android wasn't around when it came out. And they minimized Windows onto a phone in like 2000...Windows Mobile:laugh:
I managed to get a good 3min out of that before his voice and general lack of any intelligence what so ever got the better of me, forcing me to try stab my screen with a pitch folk when ever he opened his month.
I am amazed that such inbreeding still goes on in western countries, which surely must be the only reason for such a mentally challenged presenter.
Ill happily list anyone valid pros and cons of any device and remain completely objective whilst doing it AND putting aside that WP suites my needs best, why cant people who put them selves in that position at least attempt to be impartial?!
unless of course that was his sole aim!

I love android because it gives apple a good run for their ICR*P.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
My story begins when I took a visit to a t-mobile store and purchased my first smart phone: a my touch 3g slide. I learned a lot from that tank of a device. I think I spent 8 hours or more reading xda before I finally gained root access.
I love android for way too many reasons than I can list here. But my top reasons include:
Not being locked down to what some corporation says I will enjoy.
Having a sense of community on XDA with like-minded individuals.
Having the freedom to truly make my device mine.
Getting a new hobby which I'm constantly intellectually simulated and challenged.
Being able to perform tasks that usually could only be performed on my computer on the go.
To say that Android has changed my life for the better would be an understatement. Not only has it made my communications easier, is made a lot of my daily tasks either automated, faster or streamlined.
I can't think of any mobile platform that can currently accomplish everything android can. At least not so effortlessly. Many have made the claim but anyone who does their research knows that the claims are false.
I love android because it let's me make my phone the way I want it.

^^^Isn't that breaking the rules of the contest? LoL
Why do I love android?
I love android because of the freedom it offers. Its not limited to one phone, released by one company, released once a year. Android hasn't really changed the way I look for a smart phone, but XDA sure has.
How I came to Android and how it has positively impacted my day to day routine?
Well, like many others, I was an apple fanboy at one time and I had that one friend that had to rub in my face how much better his android phone was than my iPhone 2g (my favorite iPhone of them all...seriously). I got tired of my friend showing of his android phone (the original droid with the keyboard) so I traded my iPhone 2g for a Mytouch 3g with the 3.5mm headphone jack. Oh my god, I fell in love with android, being able to add widgets to the home screen blew my mind. Ever since I've had nothing but android devices (I played with an iPhone here and there, couldn't resist). Android has not positively impacted my life in any way, shape or form. It made me discover XDA and then I became a flash-aholic (may need a 12-step program lol). To be serious, android has positively impacted my life, it made me realize how much more I can do and allows me to do with a phone.
Android Superior?
Yes and no. Without the Devs and helpful members here on XDA, I think I would be on the borderline of switching back to an iPhone. The main reason I like iphones is because of the battery life and the stability of the OS. Without XDA, we would be stuck with whatever Google and the OEM gives us, which is fine for average user who just texts, uses internet, play games and make calls as well as download a home screen replacement and a few widgets, but most of us here on XDA are here for a reason. In some ways Android is superior to other OS's, but in other ways the other OS's are superior.

Can some one explain what tmobile is doing?

Thanks dude for clarifying that
Technically you'll still have unlimited data, just at a much slower speed.
You would be surprised how many company s are doing this already. There are actually many cable company's that are doing this also. This is unfair for those that use peer-to-peer networking to transfer non illegal stuff.
Honestly t-mobile is the only company that offers truly I unlimited at a reasonable price. Att for 2 lines I would have to pay 60 and he 5gb of data to SPLIT between the 2 lines.

I use them to download Linux distros. You would be surprised how many artist and movies actually release there work on bit torrent sites for free.

https://www.jamendo.com/en/welcome
http://linuxtracker.org/
https://archive.org/details/bittorrent
http://www.mininova.org/featured/cat/
..
I could go on.
A lot of movie studios, record company, and independent artist will do this to hype there movie or even get people to donate to them and lets the consumer pay what they want for the movie. A good example of this would be a small mom and pop store may practically give things away to get people in the door and away from the big business. So in Turn if people can down load the torrents the company will not make money.....But the fact is the portion of people that are doing this is pretty small, but some people still do it. Again just like the amount of people that will shop at a mom and pop store opposed to Walmart,Target,Whole Foods,Ex...
I just ditched att after 6 years because they were throttling my data at 5gs. I unlocked the sim, bought a tmo sim for $10.75 and now I pay 80per month for unlimited data, phone, tx, with zero throttling and no contract. I get extremely fast 20-30 mbps download speeds and have ditched the $45 per month att wifi. I am at almost 100gs this month by running my n3, laptop, and kids ipads. I do not go to torrent download sites at all, am I in jeopardy of being throttled by tmo ???
yep; if you continue to use 100 gigs per month, eventually you will be throttled..
XiPhoneUzer, I did the exact same. I paid more than necessary for YEARS to hold on to my "Grandfathered Unlimited Plan" despite generally using wifi and using (sometimes well) under 2 gigs of mobile data every month for the prior year (not to mention crippled, locked-down bootloader phones). It was the "just in case" mentality, ya know? Well, about a year ago now, "just in case happened"... I lost power in my apartment for like a week (obviously no modem / router / computers...) Man, I sure was glad I held on to that Unlimited plan! Immediately started watching some Netflix and... taking care of business (such as downloading a couple new Linux ISOs). Well, I hit 5 gigs mobile data that night. Got a warning message at like 4990 MB, then 5 mins later, my connection was immediately throtled down to completely "can't load a webpage" unusable. ATT reps were super helpful, like, "Man, that's too bad." and "At least you only have to wait until next Wednesday." Wouldn't even "let" me pay for more data with a usable connection! ... I no longer make use of their services.
On topic... my concern is: Is this going affect people who use clearly legitimate apps / services like BT Sync? That is, am I going to need to keep my KeePass database synced across devices via USB otg every time I update it on my computer, or some multi-step LAN upload? No, I'm not cool with keeping that kind of thing on GDrive or whatever.
You guys need to research and chill. They are only interested in the very top downloaders. These are people moving Terrabytes/month. Your 100GB is probably not even on the radar. They are also only applying the throttle to those users when the network is crowded and those people are causing problems for other users on the network. This is not the time to freak out about it. Watch, and call them on their BS, should it be called for, but for now, it's really not. This isn't a comcast style "kill all connections that look like bittorrent" deal.
To give some idea of scale, they claimed that they were contacting 20 users for this first time. Seems quite reasonable, right now. If they start to get bad, they have to know they will be called out on it. Save the rage, we might need it later.
