i was going between ROMS trying out different versions. then i installed Vision BaconBits 0.3 on a Modaco DESIRE Z rom (i know, i know) & now the phone is stuck in a boot loop.
then i noticed i couldn't revert back to the stock ROM like i've done before. i wiped & tried again, but to no avail.
says MAIN VERSION is older or something like that.
i even tried the Modaco ROM again too, but nada. it fails.
oh yeah... and for some reason i got S-ON again. i'm like wtf?
so... did i brick my phone? or is there a way to get it going again?
btw, i did install ClockworkMod Recovery for G2 & did a back up before i tried out the DESIRE Z ROM.

it sounds like your phone is screwed!if there truly is no way to fix this return it for hinge issues or something, even pop the hinge if you have to lol
Try to get into clock work wipe if you can the system should try to reinstall stock , or see if you have adb access and then you can go from there . Good luck

So your not able to Volume Down + Power and get into clockwork still? If so then why couldnt you just restore the backup you made.

i can def do the Volume Down + Power. how does that get me in to CWM?
I'm still new to this so take my advice with a grain of salt but I think that "Main version is older issue" can be avoided by using the hex editor to change the build number on the ROM. Try changing the version with the hex editor as per this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831398
and then try to flash it. Hopefully thats all you need to do.
pull the battery, wait a couple seconds and put back in. now hold the volume down button and press power. the phone will boot into fastboot. use volume down key to select recovery and hit the power button to confirm. if CW is still on your phone it will load, if you have s-on idk if it will load without su privilages or not im not a dev but try it.
edit: i have soft bricked my g1 like 10 times, the main thing to remember is backup, wipe wiPE WIPE! and follow instructions to a T.

If you can get vol dwn + pwr to work, then you can scroll to recovery. from there, you should be able to restore your backup from rom manager. If it's not in that one, then hold trackpad button + power and scroll to recovery.
if you can get into the clockwork recovery and can successfully get adb to recognize the phone, try the downgrade from OTA. it will restore your phone back to out of the box.

you might need a usb microsd reader to get the files onto and off of the sd card

I can understand your hesitation but if you read through the post you will see that many people have tested it and it should work fine. At this point its the only way to downgrade to stock due to the "Main version is older" issue and, assuming you truly can't access clockwork recovery, I don't see what other method there is. Whats really got me twisted is the S-on part; I could've predicted some issue by flashing BB onto the Z rom but I wouldn't have seen that coming. Is it even possible to flash anything while S-on is enabled?
maybe you can use an offical update.zip that is signed. i dunno

Hmmm...then you didn't install the CWM recovery. You should try to flash the rom that shipped with the phone. You can get it here. To do that, you need to get it onto your memory card as update.zip, then boot to recovery and choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip" and then you should have a bootable phone again.

don't get me wrong, i feel u. i may have no choice but to try that. i'm getting desperate.
however, the current ROM loaded is the Modaco DESIRE Z w/the Vision BaconBits 0.3 updated to it... and after that, it kept boot looping. plus the fact that i have S-ON.

have em. renamed em. tried em. (e.g.: PC10IMG.zip[, updated.zip)
oh that sucks
I was stuck in the same boat as you were. I had a stock rom permarooted and messed up editting on of the /system/ files. and got stuck with endless reboot. i then flashed this: [ROM] Desire Z Sense on the G2 (via HBOOT) because it was the only rom out at the time. It successfully loaded, but i wanted to go back to stock. i then flashed the OTB rom and got stuck with a desire z rom with s-on. No other rom would flash so i proceeded to temp-root and do the downgrade from OTA.
You lost root. Have to install the PC10.img and re-root.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
But in order to edit the files necessary to flash down to the stock ROM, he needs to have at least temp root so he can pull and edit the misc.img (I think). If he has S-on and is stuck in a boot loop, how can he access visionary or terminal emulator in order to set up that temp root? I think that's the biggest issue unless I'm missing something.
Shouldn't the stock rom have everything that's needed? Plus it's signed so it should flash with s-on.
Firstly, I'd like to apologize if this info is already somewhere on this forum or the web but I've searched endlessly since yesterday trying to find an answer to this.
The gist:
- Rooted evo using unrevoked3
- Stock info: hboot .97; radio 2.15.00.09.01; kernel 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e
build 3.29.651.5; pri version 1.77_003; prl 60670
- Flashed CM6.1.1 rom > tried to flash to a myn rom and had issues flashing going through ROM manager or through bootloader, screen kept freezing on white screen
- Somehow it came to be that the phone would endlessly loop on the bootloader screen and I couldn't get the CM6 rom to load either
- Ended up using a RUU (Supersonic_WWE3.26.651.6_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_NV_1.4044signed)
- Now the hboot is .93 and bootloader shows S-OFF but I dont have root access for some reason. I've tried doing the unrevoked3 process but even after uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and that whole process the unrevoked3 program would not recognize my phone being connected to the computer and in device manager it showed my phone as a portable storage device instead of under android phone like the first time around
I have no idea what to do to regain root so I can flash roms on it again, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Try reloading factory settings then go through root process.
Then flash a ROM using ROM manager (its what I use).
Or just load into bootloader and install .zip from there. Another easy way to flash new ROM.

Can You get into Recovery? If so do a Restore of the CM6, then do a factory reset. Then Flash Myns

It sounds like you don't have a custom recovery installed any longer. I would start your troubleshooting there and see if that helps at all.
Just go into the market download superuser should give u Su. It might be a SLCD-related brick issue. On the previous version of CWM (2.5.0.5), you could flash a mod by (koush? adrynalyne? sp?) on top to get it working.
(I can't post links yet, so if you google "Rooting stock 2.2 using unrEVOked 3.22" it will be the first link, it's on incredibleforum, Step 3A of the OP)
Alternatively, putting BAMod on the root of your SD card works (if you don't get revoked tool etc to run cos it won't boot up) to start up your phone again into recovery. Remember to rename to "PB31IMG.zip"

Then did a "one click radio S-off" it was ok.
Then installed ROM Manager to install ClockworkMod Recovery .... Everything was OK. Then I reboot to Recovery mode, screen burst upon with "!" symbol in triangle and halt ...
Try to do many ways ... but nothing happened better.
Somehow I got mistake or something went wrong? Because before re-flashed the rom said above I can boot into recovery mode without problem.
Please help.
Thanks.
You need km flash the clockwork recovery image over the top of the stock recovery. Flashing with ROM manager is a fake flash and not the real thing, have a look at the stickies have flash the recovery then you'll be good to go,
Good luck

Did, but issue still there.
Hey, I got a soft brick so I'm going to use the unroot method here but I just wanted to make sure it would work.
S-OFF, Hboot 2.1
Also, I'll still be able to root and go back to an old nandroid if this all works out, correct?
It should work. Yes, you will be able to re-root and restore a nandroid once you have completed everything again.
Might throw out your issue first, to see if someone can help you fix without having to go through all that work of unrooting and re-rooting again.
Let's hope so. I'm knocking on wood that I won't have to throw my EVO down some stairs and go get a new one.
Firstly, it is unclear (at least to me) what you mean by "soft brick". Secondly, the link you posted is to a thread that is outdated and was retired by the OP. Or did you mean this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
To answer your second question, with S-off you can just go into recovery, do a wipe and then restore your NAND back-up from there. Try just wiping the cache and dalvik cache before restoring. If your phone still gives you problems, you may need to do a full wipe and do a fresh install of your favorite rom.
Ok things are more complicated than I had originally implied.
I can't boot into recovery--still SOFF but when I try to get into recovery I'm getting the red triangle.
Should I try the fix broken recovery option?

Now we're getting somewhere. Yes, if you can get the recovery to work, it will make the process less difficult for you. Can you boot normally? If so, use ROM Manager to flash the recovery on it. If it doesn't boot into clockwork, try using ROM Manager to flash an alternate recovery (Amon RA) and then try booting into recovery.
If your phone doesn't boot at all, you're going to have to push the recovery image onto the phone via fastboot adb. Worse case scenario would be to run the RUU and start over.

Yeah, no dice on getting it to boot. Stick on the HTC EVO 4G white screen and goes nowhere. I got into this mess trying to apply the GPS fix for CM7 and when i tried to nandroid back I got loopy loops.
So should I just use the recovery fix listed there or can I just download CM 3.0.0.5 and push that via fastboot? All my nandroids are via CM.

I would download Amon recovery and flash that via adb; I recommend staying away from clockwork - read about too many users running into issues with it, especially that 3.0.0.5 version.

I would suggest using Amon Ra recovery. I like it better, and personally have had far less issues with it. Attatched is a PC36IMG of Amon Ra 2.3. Put it on the main directory of your SD card, name it exactly PC36IMG, and boot to bootloader, and select yes to update. That should flash Amon Ra's V2.3 recovery for you. If it's successful, see if it works. The only problem with this, that I see, is you wouldn't be able to restore your previous clockwork backups. However, if that did go successful, and you were able to boot into a rom, you could use ROM manager to flash clockwork back, then you could restore your backups. Hope you get it booted up.
EDIT: If you do end up needing to unroot, just remember that if you initially used unrevoked to root, or used unrevoked forever at any time, you're not going to be able to turn S on without having a custom recovery. Becase as far as I know, you need to flash the Unrevoked S on tool in recovery if you used unrevoked to begin with. Otherwise S is permanently off.

Yea, try the recovery fix. If unsuccessful getting CW to flash, remember you can always try to flash Amor RA recovery just to be able to wipe and flash a working rom. Once you get the phone to boot, you can download ROM manager, flash clockwork and then restore to your CW NAND that is stored on your SD card. I've had to do this in the past.

I renamed my recovery file and everything loaded up fine, just wondering if I should be worried about any of that

Thanks EVERYONE! Come to the DC area and the beer is on me (or if you're a mobile dev and want a job, hit me up)
Worked like a charm.
PS I copied down the error message I got when it was trying to install, wondering if I should be worried about this:
Microp OK
Radio_v2 FAIL pu
everything else OK
Bootloader FAIL ic

Really not sure. That goes beyond my scope of trial and error knowledge.
Well thanks anyway.
Looks like booting back into CWM is no longer an option for me--everything defaults to Amon_RA (even when trying to switch through ROM manager). Guess I can't load my old nandroids so I'm stuck rebuilding.
Oh well...worse things could have happened.

So choosing 'flash clockworkmod recovery' from rom manager doesnt work for you? weird. Try letting it flash, and then instead of rebooting to recovery from within rom manager, boot to recovery manually, from teh bootloader. see if that works.

Well I tried that the first time and nothing really worked out--got the same loops and had to do the whole dance again.
Tried it again after your post and it worked. Hot damn.
Getting rid of CWM as we speak and going back to RA, which was my first and only recovery for so long.

So strange, but glad it worked for you. And yea, staying on RA will be your best bet.

Seemed to be an issue with ROM Manager. So weird--I'm so used to everyone over in Heroland swearing by CWM. I'm glad I'm back to a spot where RA is king.
Anyway I uninstalled ROM manager and am just not going to screw with it anymore. GB has a "reboot to recovery" option for a reason.

Awesome. Thats the way to go, just manually flash everything using RA and you'll be good to go.
