Help me finish this theme - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for new thread, but I need somewhere for people to report things for me to fix for this theme to be used with Skyraider 2.x
Do not post things like:
Code:
Nice theme/work
Where do I get that wallpaper/icons?
______ app isn't themed
Doesn't work on ______ rom
The copy/paste field/grid outlines in rosie is still green ---I can't change that unless you can tell me how
You should make the notification icons red ---- i'm not gonna do that unless someone edits services.jar to give us red text on the bar
etc.
or I promise I'll stop working on it. I need to have serious feedback only so i can maintain a steady workpace. I've been working on this for about 8 hours now and I don't get paid to do this, so please show some respect. Now that you've read at least most of this post, feel free to download a test release
I'm looking for suggestions that I can work with... include screenshots if possible and feel free to submit images if you can
Examples of good suggestions:
Code:
titlebar_portrait.9.png is a little too dark the gradient makes the light effect look unbalanced
hue on xxxx.png is a bit lighter than on xxx.png
_______ doesn't stretch correctly
Progress so far:

It looks good. Nice theme... sorry i couldnt resist.
But seriously:
The shading on numbers on the clock look a little discolored on the bottom (i guess the hue is too bright)

How so? I need articulate feedback. uneven in what way? spacing? I didn't alter the size of the images from stock. Maybe you should at least wait till you can flash the test and then tell me how it looks.

Sorry...uneven wasnt the right word to use...look at my updated post.

maybe try flashing it first since you're not really testing anything but the quality of the screenshots ddms takes. Link is up on the op.
Done for the day will resume tomorrow maybe.

EDIT: Looks really good, I personally like the darker red on the battery. Would like to see it spread out more through the theme. And I didn't have trouble with the theme But would like to See Two things changed. (I think you are going to add your fonts to this, I would REALLY love that.) And seen from the picture below. The rating stars seem to be a little lighter than everything else. (Meaning that the red used is lighter than all others, would like to see darker.) Other than that. GREAT JOB!!! I hope this helps. Sorry if it does not.

Perfect example of constructive criticism, thank you. I'm thinking that as soon I hop back on this I should theme the market next. Ironically, those stars are in framework. They should be darker though.

Yup that line is supposed to be there... originally I was going to make the title bar (where the ongoing/notifications text is) red, but in practice it looked a bit tacky. I want to emphasize as much red as possible without overdoing it.
As far as the dark red goes, its one of those things that I've played with but didn't like too much. It could look good, but sometimes ends up looking kind of washed out or brownish.

Looks Great bro...If you ever figure out or get in touch with anyone who can edit services.jar, PM me if you could. I've got a couple things i need done. Great work so far...threw in a little something for ya!

Thank you sir, every little bit helps.
I haven't looked around too hard yet, but I'm sure we can get that text color edited eventually. I just don't wanna get hung up on that when I could be making progress toward completion of this theme. I got some stuff to do today, but when I get home I'm gonna iron out some issues and try to get more apps themed.

It may be a stretch...but what about making the drop down notifications transparent. Not sure what kind of work goes into this but maybe android pic can stay but be blended into transparent notifications or be removed (your choice). Just wondering what that might look like....over all I love all the red dude....thanks again.

Hey man, love it! My request would be to have the dock bar outlined with red-like you did with the click widget, maybe even have the the 3 labels red also.(arrow, phone, and + buttons) Otherwise I love it. Been using all your red themes for the different ROMs I've been using.
Thanks for all your hard work bro.

no dont remove it. its badass! i love this theme so far! best one ive seen yet.

First of all I want to say that I love this theme. With a bit of tweaking it will be perfect IMO. Below are some suggestions and just my opinion
My default home with this theme:
I think the notification bar is too busy looking.
Here is how it looks now:
And here is my suggestion:
Change the bars to black with white text and remove the droid on the edges. Also add about a 25% transparency to the black on the default shade around the droid to the right.
Next suggestion:
Here is the screen now:
And here is my suggestion:
Obviously the background is black with a bit of transparency with white/gray text.
These are the only areas I really noticed. I don't use the default sense home so there might be more.
Basically my suggestion is to have a overall black theme with red and white highlights only. I think this will give it a more crisp and professional look.
Thanks for your hard work and time making themes for us!

This looks like a modified screenshot...
The issue with this is that 3rd party apps sometimes use their own resources for notifications text. You'd have many apps where the text is visible but anything that uses black text would be invisible

It looks like you modified a screenshot in this one as well. If someone can spend some time digging around through source to find a xml file to hexedit, then I know how to change "textAppearance". I'm really not sure if this is something deeper than that though.
Good suggestions, but there are some limitations to overcome. I'm open to improving things and your ideas are definitely things that I have already considered but I am only one guy with a ****ty laptop and a baby. After I finish graphics, I can look into hacking some of the resources to achieve the desired effects but without help from you guys its not likely that I'll find the time to do so.
We must find a balance between functionality and aesthetics... I don't like putting stuff out that only works sometimes.
Edit: BTW, you can view source for AOSP here: http://github.com/android
You can't view source for Sense

Yeah all I did was modify screenshots. I have no idea how to code anything but I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to graphic design, let me see if I can help you in any way...

More on editing the text for the menu...
From AOSP:
Code:

@android:drawable/menu_background

@android:drawable/menu_background_fill_parent_width

#fff

?android:attr/textAppearanceInverse

I'm no developer, but from my experience(i have compiled apks from existing source in eclipse) the values dir is not accessible after the fact. I'm really not aware of what actually happens with this, but it is most likely a smali edit to change this. That's our major hurdle, as I have absolutely no java knowledge (have owned a computer for about two years now) and doing smali edits without very specific instructions is difficult for me.

I just unzipped the apks to poke around a bit and WOW! There are a lot of xml files involved. I have edited xml files for websites and such (joomla if your familiar). The problem I faced when editing xml is that changing a property in one place could potentially break attributes in another. I dont know if the same would hold true with the android platform but I would imagine so.
When I get some free time I will do a little research and see if I can help out.
Edit: in the com.htc.resources there are 1,367 png files in just that 1 apk, you have really put a lot of work into these themes!

I think this xml file actually becomes hard coded into java after being compiled... i could be very wrong as I am a super novice noob lame-o wanna-be developer type, but prior to compiling, dir is there, after compiling, poof! gone. It would actually be super easy and quick for me to hexedit the xml if it was possible
Code:
public static final int textAppearanceInverse
Since: API Level 1
Default appearance of text against an inverted background: color, typeface, size, and style.
Must be a reference to another resource, in the form "@[+][package:]type:name" or to a theme attribute in the form "?[package:][type:]name".
Constant Value: 16842805 (0x01010035)
would simply become

Almost transparent picture frame...

Hadn't seen any themes that had even really changed the picture frame (maybe no one uses it?), but I took it into my own hands to modify it for my phone. I tinted it blue, and it turns out mostly transparent with a black wallpaper. I think it is pretty damn cool, and will share the file with people if they like it, of course it means you have to know how to add it to your current theme - which I take no responsibility for. In landscape mode it has more of a blue appearance, but how often do you view your phone in landscape mode? Anyway, here is how it looks. My phone has a very modded theme that has a lot of elements from other themes, and several that I have created myself.
Any interest and I can post the actual pictureframe.9.png.
Sorry, I didn't feel like rotating the landscape shot. Lazy, or tired, I guess.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing... when will somebody edit the picture frame. Good job, looks great! Can't wait to see actual picture frame.png. Your baby is very cute btw. Congratulations!
I was wondering the same; why no one edited the picture frame widget to match themes/skins. Maybe you are right and nobody uses it. I would love to see someone edit it to match theur skin/theme.
So theme/skin developers, now you know at least someone people would use it!
if you look at the last few post of my MoOn DUST theme you will see a pic of a pic with no frame that i added to my latest build.

Cool. I am attaching what I did, if anyone wants to use it, drop it into the Launcher.apk and have fun.
I likey likey! But, couldn't download it. Can you update your link/file again?

There is no link, this is not an update you can apply. The image is attached to my last post, if you want to use it right click and save it, you will have to put it into your Launcher.apk, resign it and create an update.zip with an install script.
sorry, I misunderstood. I downloaded it. It'll take awhile before I can play around with it and get it installed into an apk.
But, thank you for the image! You ROCK!
Problem with picture frame widgets
Not really on topic here about the transparent frame but it's as close as I could find without having to start a new thread. With that said... I've always had issues adding a picture frame widget to my screen. I select Picture Frame from the widget list, I select my picture from Gallery, crop it, select Save and then it takes me back to Gallery again! Then repeats. Eventually it'll seem like it's saving and go back to the screen... but alas... no widget. Time wasted. Anyone have a solution?

A program for modifying the illumination patterns on the Sony Ericsson X1.
Screenshots: No screenshots are available at this time...
Features:
» Has a list of available events pulled directly from the registry, which you simply tap on.
» Has a pattern editor which you can use to view existing patterns as well as make your own*
» Can unlock hidden/disabled events.
» Can restore default settings.
* This is still experimental, but should be hard to break your device with, just restore defaults if you mess up
More information and downloads: http://illumineria.brins0.net/
Additional:
» I would like some constructive criticism to help me improve Illumineria where possible.
» It would be nice if people could upload their custom patterns for others to see. If it's popular, i'll make a page on the site to store people's custom patterns.
If you really like this program, and want to buy me a coffee, you can do so here
Thanks to:
» Redferne for his work on the binary dechiphering, the pattern editor wouldn't have been possible without his suggestions!
Just a quick update,
I've started delving deeper into the registry, and i've discovered alot of "hidden" events which for some reason have been disabled. These include illumination when the keyboard is opened and closed, as well as when you bring the device out of standby. It also seems you can make the lights illuminate for communications (WLAM/DATA activity).
I have also tried directly changing the values in the registry, ie, copying the values from the "Panel Selected" event into the "Keyboard Open" event, and it works perfectly, although it does seem to require a reboot for the changes to take effect, so I don't know how my idea for the event preview will work.
oh, im da first to post? i would like to have ur own custom pattern that u feel da best..
personally when incoming call, i juz want to make it blue led blinking...
n normal status oso i wan it to blink all da times.. i got lots of battery..haha..
besides, able to export settings or save settings, caz we flash rom time to time..
n oso, finger friendly interface of ur software..thx ya.. wish u good luck..
have a look at Xperiatweak, might give you some ideas. you can change the illumination settings with that. but its not completely customisable, you can only swap the illuminations around. if you can make it so that we can make up our own patterns and colours then i think that would be great.
Just a little update before I go out for the evening...
I've been searching through the entries in the registry to try and dechipher what the different sections of the binary represent. I've made a little progress and i've got a friend helping me whilst i'm gone.
If anyone is any good at dechiphering patterns in hex, then i'd really appreciate your help in working out what each little section means. If I can crack this, then my program (Which i've decided to call Illumineria ) can be made to allow you to design your own patterns, and assign them to any event.
If I can't crack the code, then i'll only be able to make an application that lets you assign presets to events.
In the attatchment, i've listed all of the events that are stored in the registry (after removing the duplicates), and listed what each event seems to do in very simple terms.
I look forwards to seeing if anyone can assist me, thanks in advance
I wish to have an Illumination that includes all different colors ( just like the Illumination for turning on the phone and changing panels ) when I get incoming call. That will be very cool for me.
By the way, that will be also cool if the Illumination lights keep turning on and changing color when we play music. Appreciate for your contribution and I wish u good luck
You should make a program that flashes the lights with the same BPS as the music you are listening to
Ideas...
Well where to begin....
Here are a few suggestions on how the app could be very simple and user friendly,
1. There should be a list of every colour available for the led's.
2. A list of led locations, (Top Left &/or Right, Bottom Left &/or Right,All, etc).
3. A list of events to choose from.
4. Then a list of styles, (Flash Fast/ Slow, Fade, Rainbow Fade (all colours fading into each other like a rainbow)).
Then all you would simply do is select a colour (#1), then a location (#2), then an event (#3) and finally a style (#4)
1,2,3,4, ab-ra-ca-da-bra and your done
Examples/ Combonations:
Standby Mode/ Sleep Mode: Slow Pulse, One Colour, One Location
Bluetooth On: Blue of course,Top two corners, Fast Flash.
Wi-fi on/ Connected: Pattern e.g. top left, bottom left, bottom right, top right, Fading in and out one by one.
Wait/ Loading: Top left = Fade in/ out blue, bottom left = Fade in/ out red, bottom right = Fade in/ out green, Top right= Fade in/ out yellow. (windows colours )

Cool!! There are a very good ideas!!!
Yeah very cool,
is there anyway of altering the brightness of the LED? it just seems quite dim and would like them to be brighter.
I also think indy.89 idea sounds easy to use,
also those registry settings u found like lights when keyboard opens/closes did you say they work or u will get them to work in your program?
And one last thing this is off the subject but can I have a sound play when I press the pannel key? could you look at this while knee deep in registry jargon?
thank you for your time and effort on this
I may suggest moving patterns (leds running up and down), and a RANDOM pattern (sort of "DISCO" pattern) to follow music or else
Just another update before I hit the sack...
I've written a basic program with a list of known patterns. The program gets a list of available events from the registry. I've found that even when enabled, some of these events never seem to fire. For the ones which activate normally, changes work as expected.
I think by tomorrow evening I should have it ready for a beta release. I hanv't made much headway on decyphering what the binary data means, so we're stuck with the known events for now.
ToDo:
- Tidy up interface a little
- Enable disabled events
- Minor menu alterations

I don't think this can be changed globally. The lights seem to be designed for night time and indoor use only, and is most likely a hardware limitation.

The keyboard open/close events fire correctly and you can customise the patterns with the current beta version of Illimineria.

You can make this button run any application you like by changing the value of "HKLM\Software\SonyEricsson\PanelManager\ApplicationName" key in the registry. I'm not sure if this has been menioned anywhere else, I think I may have been the first one to spot it, but i've currently got it assigned to run "QuickMenu" which is a very nice cascading start menu replacement. You can also do the same for the camera button by changing the value of "HKLM\Software\SonyEricsson\Camera\ApplicationName" key in the registry.

I don't think this would be the best way of doing it looking at what I have already learnt about how the patterns work. From what I can tell, there are 3 distinct "frames" to each pattern, so it would most likely have to be designed differently than how you ahve suggested.

Currently there is no known way to programmatically control the lights in this way, so this isn't possible. Not to mention the load on the processor trying to calculate the bpm of a song. Very few songs have an ID3 tag with the bpm, so it would ahve to be calculated on the fly.

This is possible with the current version which I will most likely release tomorrow, and it does look fairly impressive in action...
Nice to see the progress, good job!
First of all I'd like to clear up one misunderstanding, we are and have been aware of being able to change the panel and camera buttons functions for a long time.. We haven't been sitting still here!
Now, on the hex part, I've taken a look and have no clue as to how SE formatted the code. Can't find a pattern (pun intended) yet.
I'll see if there's anything I can find, but don't count on it, as I'm not very experienced with hex (yet). In the meantime I'll think of some lean features you might add.
thank you for your replys,
I do know you can change the pannel key to open another program but i dont want this i just want it to open pannels and play a sound of my choice.
press pannel key and the pannels show on screen but also a little tune plays or i could edit some MP3 to say "pannel mode active" or "select a pannel" a nice sexy woman voice?
I know its off topic but i would rather ask this to someone who has the brain power to know what they are doing and you guys fit the bill

Sorry, but I have to say this doesn't belong here, regardless of your motives.
What you need is a mortscript. It's fairly easy, create a mortscript that plays a sound and launches the panels application, then assign the panel key to the mortscript and you're good. Do some searching on how mortscript works and you'll have this created by yourself in no time!
I would like to change the colors for the diffrent sitations like sms, missed call and so one. It is not possible in the orignal rom.
The other things which are posted here, like the blue color for bluotooth connections and so one are great too.
thank you and apologies for goin off topic
to be honest i dont think we can give anymore input until we have tried the program and then add comments as it seem you are fully on top of this.
How much drain would the battery have do you think if the LEDs glow blue constantly if the bluetooth is always enabled? or other modes.
would it be possible to add a timer function i.e. on connecting to wifi the LEDs will act for a certain amount of time before being disabled.
The LEDs used aren't very powerful ones, thus shouldn't use too much power. Theoretically it's possible to "call" the LED patterns, if we can find the LED controller. I guess that's what we're looking for at the moment.
Already have it installed and im trying it right now.
So far, I have one big suggestion. Change the highlight color in the menu. Its nearly impossible for me to tell what i currently have selected. Gray on darker gray isnt very visible lol.
Also, can you add an option to test the patterns?
EDIT: It definitely does work though.. Just made my phone display the rainbow pattern when I open the keyboard. Awesome.
EDIT2: It seems like it can only change one thing at a time. If I change multiple things, nothing happens...
Just tested this with the QWERTY Close and On functions. changed both and then restarted, nothing got changed. Changed only close and restarted, that worked.
EDIT3: Standby and QWERTY_ON doesnt seem to do anything.

I thought it would be interesting to see what people have done with their devices, now that we can do at least a little bit of customization within WP7. I've seen some pretty smooth looking phones in YouTube videos and around the internet. I'm sure no two customized phones are the same.
Whether it be registry changes, accent customization, theme changes, or whatever, let's see what you've done!
I have mine below, I switch between the grayer shade of blue and the darker red. I can't decide which I like more.

is there a way to add colors to the background where "dark" and "light" are just like one the other color accents we can do right now? instead of going in and changing the default ones alone?
would like to know, thanks
Changing the background color is easy. You just need a registry editor such as this and edit the registry key:
[HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\*\pageBackGroundColor]
* - 1 is dark theme, 0 is light theme
Enter a hex number after #FF, such as #FF40546e for a steel blue.
You may also want to edit these keys:
[HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\*\Basethemecolor]
[HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\*\TextHighContrast]
[HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\*\TextBackGround]
[HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\*\pageBackGroundColor]
[HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\*\SysTrayBackGroundColor]
[HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\*\TextNeutralColor]
[HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\*\ContrastColor]
Playing around with these should teach you what each changes. To see your changes, switch themes from dark to light and then back or vice versa.

yeah thanks that is really helpfull but is there a way to add an extra menu color like when it says "light" and "dark" lets say create a string in the registry to add another drop down menu inside the theme to get one that one makes like lets say "orange" or whatever and change back to those other "light" and "dark" themes without editing them?
just add another one without touching the old ones?
i will try this though, just wanted to know if this was possible before i moved anything

No you can not add new theme ....Just be aware that messing with registry in that level is danger ..Make a backup first

How did you change the page switcher to the Windows logo? Also nice icon switch. EDIT: Is that a different battery icon as well?
BTW, my phone was featured on 1800pocketpc along with part of my tutorial on how to change your phones background color: http://www.1800pocketpc.com/2011/06...-background-theme-color-on-windows-phone.html

3-D Texting!

Hi everyone, forgive if anything like this is already up (I searched and found nothing). But I completely customized the text messaging appearance so that it takes advantage of the pure black that the AMOLED uses.
(This is all using the app: "Handcent SMS")
I downloaded "handcent SMS" went into settings --->custom style--->bubble settings:
Here is where I Changed Conversation style to: Android
Background color: pure black (all colors to zero)
Incoming background and outgoing background to: pure black
(By then everything should be black)
Now this is what makes the effect happen:
I adjusted incoming font color to pure red (255)
Then I put outgoing font color to 138-Green and 255-Blue
I adjusted both fonts to size 22.
I Also noticed that the date font color also helps with the effect and I have mine at 83-green.
So once you have all these setting in place, the pure black and the incoming red font should look like it pops right out at you, while the blue outgoing font color sits in the back!!!
I noticed the effect pops out more outside or whenever theres a more light in the room!
(First write up, forgive if I'm not as thorough as I should be)
Give it a shot, mess around with the colors!
Interesting effect. I do like the glossy black background. Though I found the pure red to be too harsh. I settled on official Android Blue (51, 181, 229) for the incoming text font color.
Will try it out for a few days to see whether it's a keeper.
Update: Making the incoming text font a couple of points larger than the outgoing enhances the 3D effect.

Eh, the red text certainly pops out but I wouldn't say it does so in a 3d kind of way. In fact it looks sort of pixelated to me and harsh to look at. More like it's grabbing my attention by being so stark compared to the rest of the screen.
I think I like your color settings for the outgoing text though, very easy on the eyes. I'm messing around with options for the other color, so far I'm working with max green, mid blue and red.
Still waiting for a screenie

Blue and red colors always appear to have depth on a solid color hence the red and blue 3D glasses. It's an optical illusion but neat if you like that sort of stuff.

Ok so clearly a troll post. Looking at the instructions alone you can tell nothing 3D about it. I'll post a screenshot in 10 mins. Maybe we can get an op to get rid of it.

Ever thought that this effect won't come out in a screenshot because it's an effect of the AMOLED screen or the specifical display?
Ever thought that this is an optical illusion and not an actual 3D-effect and you might just not see it because it is, in fact, an illusion?

Galaxy Nexus Collaborative Optimal Color Settings

Hey Guys, I've seen people's color settings all over for the Galaxy Nexus, we have different tools, different kernels and different ways to improve the Purple/Red/Tint Issues with Franco's App, Morfics, as well as free tools like Trickster Mod's App and the new CM10 Color Multiplier, Color Gamma Tuning, and Color Hack presets.
Goal: Have all this information in one place
I have created a Publicly Accessible Spreadsheet on Google Docs that you can edit without sign-in, please either
A:Edit the doc with your color settings or
B: Reply to this thread with your color settings for each different kernel and app and one of us in the thread may update the spreadsheet. Also only reply if you can provide useful information regarding these issues.
I know allot of people are stuck with their Galaxy Nexus, so lets all work together on sharing our settings and tips/tricks regarding this since samsung still has not fixed the issue and still sends out devices with this issue. I've heard people go through 5-6 replacements, ouch.
Checkout the format of the spreadsheet, and feel free to improve it.

Anyone know of a way to disable the screen dimming on the notification drop down? When it dims on low brightness the notification and background is purple.
No clue how to get rid of the screen dimming on drop down. You should watch out when running the higher contrast numbers, burn in is a spooky thing. I'm glad that a list of some type is being made (suggestion gathering has been abysmal), although every screen has it's own inherent faults and oddities, it will be very interesting to see the results. Thanks man.
Good idea. I added a couple.
Thanks for this list. I've been messing around with color settings for awhile now with no success. I always felt like the screen had a tinge of green that I couldn't get rid of.

Adding some red should help that. My problem is that there are a couple "hot spots" of yellowing and magenta that I have to strike a balance between. Went through a few different settings but posted my current to the spreadsheet.
Previous:
200,215,280
-2,0,15
-23
And I added a Gradient Fix column since I find using that mod changes what you need for color settings to make things nice.
Also worth mentioning that in some apps the OMAP Gamma runs on a 1.0-2.0 scale (by 0.2s) and in others 5-10 (by 1s), these are equivalent however.
Finally a useful idea for a thread.
Just wondering, isn't every screen at least slightly different? I'm pretty sure that's why there's color calibration, or the screens would come calibrated perfectly.

There isn't a HUGE variation in the differences. Each screen isn't a special snowflake. There's a relatively small, finite number of different screen settings that work for all screens.
This will give people a narrowed-down list to try first instead of spending hours experimenting.
Im finding my self having OCD in getting this perfect lol, just added another setting that I found pretty nice but there is still slight purple at 1-5percent brightness. Thanks guys for adding your settings to the spreadsheet, I think with enough data we can average the setting variables and find a good base setting
For me color is only an issue below 20 percent and sometimes lower depending on gamma settings, im finding that gamma and contrast seem to help more than the actual color multipliers
Edit: Just updated the spreadsheet with more settings others have shared on XDA, credits go to isinisterx, amit_sen
ÜBER™, for sharing their settings in other threads
This worked wonders for me

Really, the only purpose to document all these settings is for statistics. To show that more Nexus screens come with x-color tint than y-color. Even then, you're trusting people to know what white and gray are supposed to look like. I've seen how most people set up their TVs - they're usually wrong.

It doesn't take hours, it's a pretty easy process:
Color multiplier is white balance, which also affects overall color tone. Get two things: a blank white screen, and a pure black screen with white text (settings is easy if you have gradient disabled.) Use these, and go with what you think white should be, unless you have a good reference or a calibration tool. For example, I dropped red/green because my screen was too yellow stock. I then found that I could still almost see the individual red pixels sticking out of text (best way I can describe it), and looking at my home screen felt a little too "pink", dropped red a little more until it looked fine.
Next is gamma/offset/whatever which is the adjustment of everything in between white and black. This one can be trickier because grays can easily look too red/brown, too blue, too yellow, etc. and on these screens the gray balance will change depending on brightness. Yes, sometimes drastically (see: purple tint) This can be a pain if you need to lower greens because green can't be lowered (the screen goes nuts), and the colors don't scale the same, so if you increase red and blue by the same amount one will probably be stronger than the other.
Just from my experiences. And yes, each screen is a special snowflake. Most people are just happy enough with canned settings.
The only thing I would add to that is if you are going to eyeball the whites and grays without a reference, it's better to do it in soft, indirect daylight instead of artificial light, which has various color tints depending on what kind of bulb you use.

I usually calibrate at maximum brightness, then double check if the settings are ok at 50% and minimum brightness.
You probably should do this on the brightness setting you're most regularly at.
I personally did my calibration at 50% as I almost never go above that (unless in direct sunlight.) I read in another calibration thread someone mentioned that with default settings 50% brightness is quite close to a "standard" brightness level (measured in IRE) - so I'm going on someone's word, but it looks good and natural to me.

Screenshots don't really prove anything.. It's all in how your screen looks in person after compensating for the "special snowflakiness"
Take a photo if you want to show us how different settings are affecting things.

Still can't figure out what to change. The colors are fine but the darks are dark and hard to compare them to against each other
Edit: I'm stupid! I was using the lowest omap gamma..should be 1 right :/

Color multiplier : 1 , 1, 1
Gamma : RGB : 9:0:16 with DSS gamma : off
No trinity contrast applied ,
