Confused about custom roms - Desire General

Firstly my Desire is from T-Mobile UK and am thinking of moving to a custom rom. Do I have to unlock the phone first before the rooting process? I am sure this has been covered many times so I am sorry in advance.

Ideally yes. Some radio updates can cause problems with branded phones, which then need to be unlocked.
Far safer, in my opinion, to get your unlock code beforehand, just in case it happens to you.
Regard,
Dave

+1 may as well have the unlock code just incase

Thanks for the advice, I thought it all sounded a bit too easy.
Thanks again.

I thought it was just those on orange that had the sim-lock problem after rooting?

After radio update, rooting has nothing to do with it.
Also, it happened to people on some other networks, check threads about rom 1.21 arrival

Patch to Unlock Samsung Omnia?

Recently switched back to Windows Mobile (Samsung Omnia) but it's locked to Vodafone UK. My question is, is there a similar patch around here that can unlock the phone, just like the patch i used last time to unlock my Hermes which was on Vodafone UK as well. Cause from searching the forums, buying the unlocking codes seem to be the only option to unlock Omnia.
As Omnia's on Windows Mobile as well, I believe there could be a patch, but couldn't find it even after searching. Can anyone point me to the right direction please?
Thanks in advance.
Will flashing a new ROM help? If not, how bout flashing a RADIO? Is flashing ROMS/RADIOS on Omnia done the same way as flashing on HTC phones such as (hermes)? I remembered back then, I needed to enter into a bootloader menu. And also flashing HardSPL before that
as of yet its not really that well known, i think flashing custom roms may help but not the official ones

Owh so you mean flashing custom-cooked roms can actually unlock my Omnia? Thanks for the heads up!
Cheers
My preliminary thoughts are that if I flash a custom ROM, I can debrand any WinMo phones. Since it's debranded, it'll be unlocked. Am I right on this one?
I'm used to HTC phones, and I know bout the HardSPL and stuff like that. How about the Omnia? Has it got a specific procedure or steps to take before flasing roms to minimize the chances of bricking it?
I appreciate any replies. Thanks
No, it won't be unlocked.
Debranding has NOTHING to do with unlocking.
Ok so flashing a custom ROM now won't unlock, just debrand? Is there a program out there that can unlock it? Cause its running on Winmo, so I assumed unlocking it wont be that difficult.
Thanks for your answers.

Please Help Wifi Not working after 1.21.405.2

Ok the other day i decided to get rid of the orange rom from my HTC Desire so i created a goldcard flashed the testruu.exe file then i rooted my phone. yesterday i decided to unroot it and reflash the htc generic rom. all was working perfect then today i checked for ota update. there was one ready to download so i got it installed and it was working fine. ive just got home from work now and my wifi says unable to start under settings. dont know how its happened
Any ideas how to fix this.
Thanks in advance.
p.s.
please dont tell me ive got to flash my phone again otherwise i will get all my friends iphones to rape the desire right up the usb slot
you could try doing a manual update using the RUU 1.21.405.2 in the dev forum. I used that and I have no wi-fi problems...
Funny, the other reports of broken wi-fi I've read seem to be from people who had previously rooted their phones too...
Is there no other way around this other than flashing the rom?
Doubt it, but it's pretty soon after the official roll-out. Give it time and somebody might figure something out.

Mine has never been rooted and I have the same wi-fi problem after the 1.21.405.2 update.
Not so funny then, I guess.
Try flashing with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684259
It's the same update... but it works. At least, it worked on mine and many others. It will wipe everything so make sure to back up first.
Same here...Never rooted, but I did de-brand with a generic ROM using a GoldCard. Can't start Wi-Fi.
Does anyone know if T-Mobile customers with the stock T-Mobile ROM have received this update?
Hello. Exactly same problem for me: Orange France ROM flashed to official HTC, and after upgrade unrecognized wifi. It was never rooted.
How to be sure to have an official ROM ?
Thanks.
Ok, so it's not rooting, but we now have three people in this thread who have flashed to the generic rom and then updated, who now have broken wireless.
Teppic24 - how about you? Did you debrand your phone? Just curious. If that's the issue maybe we can warn people who have done the same...
Yes I did de-brand.
So basically, everybody in this thread who has wireless issues, de-branded their phone before applying the update?
There's a pattern here...
It's exactly the same for me. I debranded my French Orange HTC Desire with the official HTC Rom, and now no more Wifi
What's more, I have never rooted my Desire.
arrrrrrggggghhhh Help!
Just flashed it using the same 1.21.405.2 rom from the dev section and now its asking for sim network unlock pin
I put in my goldcard and booted to fastboot then with my phone connected to pc i ran the rom.exe and it installed booted up and now its asking for sim network unlock pin.
Any ideas plz
Thanks
Dion
Yeah, I don't know what exactly the issue is, but the debranding does seem to be the culprit (so far, anyway)
As mentioned previously, you can probably fix it by flashing your Desire with the rom linked in the first post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684259
It's an official release. It will wipe everything, so make sure to back up first.

I take it a Goldcard is still required to flash that, even for de-branded phones?

Yep...and now I feel like a **** for leaving it lying around my overly tidy girlfriend who doesn't take care of what she's throwing out when she's gone all Monica for the day.
Well, I just plugged my phone in and opened the RUU on my pc. But my desire is a stock, unaltered model.
I don't know if it will be the same for you guys.
With my unabeled wifi, rebranded HTC rom after Orange, my base band version is:
32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11
In hope it helps...
It seems that there is no trouble with this one : 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2.
If someone want to make a test ... and there an other one : 32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2
Silly question probably, but I don't care:
Is it possible to flash only the baseband ?

1.21.405.2 OTA - working wifi solution on debranded phones!

Hi,
I've just been in the process of upgrading my phone - an orange unbranded unlocked (but not rooted) phone - coming from the generic 1.15 rom. I went through the process that has been documented all over the forums - OTA update which then stops the wifi working, followed by the full RUU update which then seems to have completed the upgrade successfully and wifi is working again. Strangely I didn't get asked for a sim unlock code again, so I'm thinking that if you have already unlocked your phone prior to update, then it does keep the setting.
Now to the interesting bit. I've just attempted to update a friends desire - same status and rom 1.15 as mine prior to the OTA attempt. However, this time i put the goldcard in BEFORE running the OTA update and guess what - i got an 'upgrade successful' message and no problems whatsoever with the wifi. Checking his firmware/software info, all is exactly the same as my phone including the kernal (which people had previously mentioned was the thing stopping the wifi starting). So it looks like the wifi problems we have seen have been caused by the OTA needing the goldcard in to update the kernal!!!
Sorry if I'm rambling, but i expected to be spending the evening setting my mates phone up from scratch and it now looks like i won't need to.
One thing i can't confirm (as both phones were already unlocked with an unlock code) is whether the OTA upgrade will sim lock non-unlocked phones.
Hope this info is of help to people.
Cheers.
Makes sense.. well done, have a cookie
Nice, just a shame I'm about 20 miles from my gold card and pc. Lol.
I wonder of this means having to use the gold card EVERY time an update is released?

Probably only if its going to update the kernal, but i think for safety's sake its probably better to do it with it in. I'm just wondering though - can a goldcard actually be used as storage too or does it need to be fully blank? Mine has some backup directories which the phone wrote to it after the original unbranding and it doesn't seem to have stopped it working for this upgrade so it might be possible...
If this works for more people, you've done a great service here!
Unfortunately I had the problem and went through the whole purchasing a code route but hope this works for anybody else looking to upgrade

Yes. I just made the card I was using in the phone anyway a goldcard. You can ignore the formatting bit as it's already formatted as fat32. I backed up just in case, but I didn't lose any data in the process. If you screw up doing the hex write to the card you could do your data in though.
I suppose this could explain why some ex-orange desires' have been working fine with the OTA upgrade - would be interesting to know if those who haven't had any issues were the ones like yourself who's storage card doubles up as their goldcard.
It would be interesting to see if this works! I am waiting for a solution for this so I can unbrand my orange desire! Anyone want to be guinea pigs?

Would love to know if it works on locked handsets. I've been holding off on upgrading purely for that reason. I always assumed everyone was using a gold card every time they upgraded anyway so if they aren't, perhaps that is something to do with it.
Hello, just to confirm I also have Orange branded Desire, debranded and running stock ROM using T Mobile sim - sim unlocked it a while back with code off HTCcode site.
Did OTA without goldcard, had WiFi issue. Ran RUU with goldcard in which solved the WiFi problem, but this time it did not ask for simunlock code.. Did this on Saturday before I went to the seaside and had fish and chips.
So - confirmation that it works. And the fish and chips were lovely, by the way.

Can anyone else confirms the OTA update with the gold card in means wifi still works after?

I will hazard a guess that you will still have to unlock your phone, it just means that your WiFi doesn't break if you do the OTA update.
I could be wrong, am waiting for someone to test that theory.
Sooo the next person to read this who has a Debranded 1.15 Locked Orange handset and is prepared for the update... Put your goldcard in, perform the OTA update and tell us what happens!
(the worst that can happen is your phone will be locked like the rest of ours and you'll have to buy a code for a tenner, but then your phone will be unlocked which isn't a bad thing)

Nice one for clearing that one up and confirming the OP's solution.
So its a definite true n true fact that anyone who wants to update their deBranded handset will have to unlock it no matter what.. apart from that, as long as you have your goldcard in everything else should be plain sailing.
I concurr, I did the exact same, i'm on Orange UK with a debranded Orange Desire (generic 1.15) and I use my goldcard as a normal SD card in my desire all the time. I did the upgrade from 1.15 to 1.21 (OTA) and everything went smoothly with no wifi issues. It still network and sim locked the phone after update to which I purchased a code from mobileunlocked . com and had to enter it twice to unlock (once for network unlock and again for sim unlock). Now I have a nice shiney desire running 1.21 firmware unrooted and sim unlocked
Will be updating mine later today when I get my gold card from home later. Already unlocked it too so that shouldn't be an issue.

Dumb question - is my phone debranded after I install S-OFF/root/custom rom

Really noob question... I've been using custom ROM, S-OFF, root since 5mins of owning my Desire. Is it debranded from Telus? I hope so because I don't like Telus
Yes, but you could've just gone to a stock ROM and actually used the phone before potentially bricking your Desire
You also currently now have NO warranty so unless you have the Telus RUU (assuming there is one) and you break it you're screwed
No I had the phone for couple months already, I was just wondering if the branding thing was another procedure to do.

de-branding is when you get rid of all the operator branded bloatware and logos ect

there wasn't any installed on the phone, strange as I know telus usually does. It's just their rom that they modified . Though I remember when doing S-OFF, it showed something in the process telling "telus" somewhere. Don't exactly remember.
Not that I care really lol

[Q] Root Kitkat 4.4.4

Hello everyone, I bought the M8 yesterday from verizon and I updated it 4.4.4 which I may regret once I find out the answer to this. Is there a root method and bootloader unlock for Software version 3.28 by any chance? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Also I have tried sunshine with no luck. Otherwise I would gladly pay the $25 for it.
Thanks,

Your going to have to wait I think, could be wrong though. All the rooting methods and s-off methods have been tweaked on the the earlier version of the phone software, so until someone finds a hole in the new ota I think I can honestly say no. Read through the Verizon thread, could be some clues there. You could try downgrading the os but then theres the new hboot. I don't know much about Verizons security, seems to be very weak compared to the international variety, they always get unlocked etc first from what I can gather. I could be totally wrong lol, there maybe an unlock hack available that works, never owned Verizon so need to research.
