Hello All,
I would like to connect my laptop and my HTC Tytn using the USB Cable and then use the HTC Wifi Adapter to connect my laptop to a hot spot?
Is that possible?
Thanks in advance!
I *think* this is possible but I honestly have no idea as I have never tried it, it is only an idea.
Here is how you would do it (in theory):
1) Connect phone to wifi spot.
2) Turn on Internet Connection Sharing on the phone, selecting USB mode
3) Connect laptop to phone with USB cable.
If all goes well you will have access. I have only done this though with a regular Edge/3G connection, never with a wifi connection, so I can't be sure it will work like that.
Your other answer is to just buy a wireless card for your laptop, they're not that expensive and will be faster wifi then what the Hermes has.
Nope, does not work with the standard internetsharing app.
And as far as i know there is no existing app. that can share the wifi. If there is, i like to know too!
I believe you can but you have to do a registry change that for internet sharing app that changes the input from the cellular modem to the wifi card.

Doesn't work that way - it's rigged to share the 3G/GPRS via wifi, not the other way around.
Have a read through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332360 it mentions a few different combinations.
Thank you all guys!

No, that is about creating a wifi-acces point of your WM-device. The question here was to create a wifi-adapter.
But i searched a lot of threads about this, and this confusion is everywhere.
Yes, this is about creating a AP...i'm going to keep looking....
Thanks!

Correct, but a few pages into that thread people ask about different combinations of public/private interface, and the current known possibilities and limitations are discussed.

im trying to do this at the moment too, getting the computer to notice the usb connection as a network card or modem is going to be the trick i think.
i should just spend the $30 and get a wifi dongle from ebay.
Yes st3v3 but that would be easy... LoL
question...
is there an app or maybe a computer program that would let me share my PC's internet to my phone using just the usb cable (kinda like a reverse tethering)
i don't have wireless access at work, and would like to limit my data usage so is there anyway for me to connect using my PC's internet?

There is a market app called "reverse tether" available for 5 bucks that should do what you are looking for.
You can also check out the XDA thread HERE
Have a look at this.
Damn, beaten to it
thanks, reverse tether app sounds interesting although it mostly have bad reviews
will try the program later
Hi, I currently have my FTV connected to my router using a wired connection. I tried to make a wireless hotspot using FTV by using the Wifi Tether Router app. It works fine. I can see the access point and I can connect my laptop and my IPhone to it and surf the internet without any issues.
The problem starts when I connect FTV to my router using the build in wireless card. At this point, if I enable the router (through the app), it disconnects my outgoing wireless connection from FTV to my outside router. The hotspot is ON and working, I can connect to it fine with my laptop, but of course, its useless as there is no outside connection.
My question is, is this possible? Using the internal wireless infrastructure in FTV to both act as a software router (through the app or any other app) and also use it for my outgoing connection to the WAN. Can it do both simultaneously? If possible, does anyone have any suggested settings for this app (Wifi Tether Router)
If no one has any experience with this app, is there other app that makes this possible, paid or free? Thanks.
You only have one radio which can either be used as a client or access point.. But not both at the same time.
This works on phones as it uses the GSM or CDMA radio for the wan and the WiFi for lan.
Ok, thanks. If it helps, I have a USB hub connected to FTV. My wireless keyboard and mouse combo is hooked to that and works. I have a Wireless USB adapter from CompUSA (the kind you plug into a desktop to get wireless capability) which I can use by attaching to the USB hub. Can that somehow be used to accomplish this? I know I can always buy a Wifi as WAN router like CradlePoint, but curious if this can be done through FTV.
Edit: In a way, the next logical question is, can an external USB wireless adapter be used with FTV for its outgoing WAN? If so, how? I have the StickMount loaded and I can browse through another storage USB through ES File Manager. Probably not related, but thats the setup I have now.

Doubt there are drivers for a USB WiFi dongle.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
which tethering app did you use exactly?
The Wifi Tether Router. I can't post links yet.

This is what I'd try. I'd look to see if other Android STBs can run an external wireless card and if so, try to find the cheapest one with the same wifi chipset.
The problem is going to be in telling the OS to use one adapter for uplink and one for hotspot duty. In theory it's possible, in practice - well, keep the cost of the second dongle below 30 bucks and tell us your findings.
Here's a device some Ouya folks use http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-WNCE2001-Universal-Internet-Adapter/dp/B007CO5DZ4
that link is to the refurb, new they're just north of 50. Here's a similar one that goes new for 25-35

Basically, you configure it (connected to a PC) then you connect the device to the ethernet port on your fireTV, it acts as a bridge to the wifi network over the ethernet, so potentially you could then use the wifi onboard as your access point.
Probably you could, actually - you've described doing just that already but using a whole cable run, right?
IMHO if your gonna drop $ might as well by an access point.. They can be had for cheap and you won't be tying up your firetv handling network traffic.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will give it a shot in the near future.
I am sorry, I missed the last line, don't understand what you are saying there... Thanks.

Just that in your initial post, you describe running ethernet to your fire and also getting the wifi to work as a hotspot.
Since you'll still be delivering network to the fire ethernet port, this setup will look to the fire as if you've run ethernet to it all the way from your router, and it ought to work just the same.

Not doubting this on FTV, but the matricom mx2 boxes can be used as a wireless hotspot as long as you have it on ethernet.
Once you have an unlocked bootloader, you might have acess to traditional android settings like the mx2 with a custom rom. Just an idea...

That is correct. Works beautifully with ethernet WAN. Works so well that it seems to have a higher broadcast power than my oldish Netgear router. They both sit side by side in my bedroom. As soon as I walk to my garage, my IPhone loses the router, but with FTV it stays connected, with 2 semi circle bars. Also, it chugs along even when FTV goes into sleep mode.

Instead of a dedicated device you could purchase a chameleon type of device like this.

I would love to make my Fire TV an access point. I have a 1st gen and it is also connected via an ethernet cable. Can you tell this newbie how to do it? You mentioned Wifi Tether Router.
My old HTC had an option for internet pass-through when plugged into the computer via USB where the phone accesses the internet through the computer's connection. This is very useful because I don't have WiFi. Is there a way to do this on the G4? I can currently only find how to send the phone's internet connection to the computer, but I would like it to go the other way.
Settings -> Tethering -> USB Tethering ?
nevermind.. didn't comprehend original post on initial read
I don't know of an app that works with the G4 but you can google "reverse tethering".

Hi! I have developed an app that should work with the G4: ReverseTethering NoRoot. I have opened a dedicated thread over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-reversetethering-noroot-t3316716
Hi all,
Are you experiencing slow connections with your Pixel 6's internet sharing ?
I tried in wpa2 and wpa2/wp3 I have the same problem. Same thing if I share with a USB cable. I didn't have this slow problem with my Pixel 5. Anyone have an idea ? (I have already updated my wifi drivers on my PC)
Thats sound like something potentially subjective in nature ("slow" could mean: router problem, site problem, maybe a VPN or whatever), did you do side-by-side speedtests with your old phone to determine if there is an actual difference?
Also do I understand you correctly, that you share your phones Internet via usb to a PC? I didn't knew that was even possible, that's cool. Does that mean you have some sort of USB to LAN adapter?
But why not get an oldschool WLAN usb dongle? Having a thirdparty in the middle is never good for latency.

You can share internet including via mobile data with your PC by USB cable (USB tethering). No USB->ethernet adapter needed. I used to do it a ton with my first Android 11 years ago because I didn't have home internet at the time and I had unlimited (3G) data, and hardly any money.
No VPN, no proxy, it's a direct connection. But I solved the problem by turning the mobile data off and on. There's a topic on Reddit. I hope Google will fix this bug soon !
Bye guys !
Edit : Is working only with USB cable, not in hotspot !
