Hey guys I just finished runny simple root OTA edition. Everything went well and now I'm rooted. I am running into a couple of questions now.
1. Whats happens now? I'm rooted now how do i get those nice custom roms onto my phone?
2. I purchased ROM Manager because baked snacks rom says it was necessary for install but i can't get it to install clockwork mod, it keeps saying something about error running privileged commands.
3. How do I go back to stock ROM I'm starting to feel like I might be over my head at this point.

I'm in the same boat. The two main reasons for rooting was for a new ROM and to use it as a hot spot (which so far I haven't been able to do.)
ROM Manager gives me the same error message about clockwork. Also, I would like to stop paying the $30 a month for the hot spot, so any help in that area would be appreciated.

0. Please read everything before doing anything. My post is a little chaotic, but you should be fine if you read everything first.
1/2. The usual disclaimer: I'm not telling you to do anything. I'm just providing information. I'm not liable for anything you do to you phone.
1. ROM Manager is definitely the easiest way, though the "real way" is to load your ROM of choice on the SD card and then flash it from Recovery (more on recovery later).
1 & 1/2. By the way, you should install Titanium backup from the market five minutes ago. Yes, it is that important. When jumping ROMs, you often have to wipe everything out. Without Titanium Backup, you could end up having to repurchase apps and redownload all of your free ones, losing progress in games and settings in apps, etc. The free version of Titanium Backup lets you back up easily enough, but you want the donate version to prevent restores from taking a few hours of user interaction (Yes, I said user interaction, meaning sitting there and pressing buttons for hours). Once you throw $4.00-$50.00 (you can pick within that range, you get the same product regardless of amount) at Titanium Backup (and wait a day or so to get the license key file), you can do a restore in 15 min without any interaction beyond hitting start (or, more accurately, begin batch process). This app has saved my life time and time again. I literally did my first backup out of curiosity for the app and then totaled my phone in the next five minuets. It even backs up your home screen layout. GET IT NOW!!! YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF IF YOU DO NOT GET IT!!! At least get the free version, because, as stated above, it does backups fine. You (like me) will be scared into paying when you realize that you just wreaked everything and really don't want to spend the next few hours restoring. However, Titanium backup will not function until you get Superuser app working, as detailed in point 2 below.
***EDIT: I forgot to mention that Titanium Backup should work after running this program. It should even fix clockwork for you***
2. There are three possibilities for that error: 1: You don't have the superuser app installed. It dishes out the privileges. If you don't have it (if you do go on to potential issue number two and be grateful), you can install it by downloading this file and putting it on the root of the SD card. Then boot into recovery (I'm sure there is a tutorial for getting into recovery floating around here somewhere, just search the EVO section) and flash the .zip Presto! Superuser app is installed. If you prefer not to go around flashing random packages recommended by strangers on the internet, you can research and download superuser app at the source 2: If you found the Superuser app in the app drawer (the screen with all the applications where you scroll down in alphabetical order and pick the one you want to use), open it. You may have bumped "never give superuser access to this app" (or words to that effect) the first time you opened ROM Manager. If so, it will be listed in the Superuser app

Just have the superuser app forget ROM Manager and then try to flash custom recovery from within the ROM Manager again, being sure to say "Yes!" when it asks for superuser privileges. 3: If you have no recovery to flash superuser from or superuser is installed and ROM Manager is green inside and it still fails, the SimpleRoot failed. If you skipped a step in the rooting process, go back and do that step. If not, just start over and run all the steps from the beginning, Also note that if you accepted the over the air update, you need the OTA version of SimpleRoot, not the original one.
3. Now, about total reversal. I'll be honest: There is probably a way to go back to stock that works without finishing the root process (probably something to do with PC36IMG.zip) files, but I don't know it. The way I would do it would be picking the OTA Stock ROM from this page and flashing it after getting recovery installed at the end of a successful root process. However, then you would have succeed in your original endeavor and would have no need to go back. There is a program here that supposedly does just enough tweaking to the phone to give you the recovery you need to flash back to the stock ROM, but I have not used it myself and therefore cannot vouch for it.

If you both succeed in the root process (and I encourage you to persevere, the reward is spectacular), I personally recommend Cyanogen Mod 6. I believe that you can get the nightly builds of CM6 from ROM manager, but the release candidate is likely more stable. I use the RC myself and have never looked back. My battery lasts forever and my phone is never unresponsive. And because the CM6 ROM is based of of Android 2.2 (Froyo), free tethering is built in to the OS and done so rather elegantly, meaning no more dirty hacks for tethering. Just know that if you go that route, though you have the best of the best, you will need to tinker a bit to get everything working. Also, 4G, the FM Radio, and HDMI output are flat out not working in the RC (I'm sure they will be fully functional in the final release, and the not-workedness is a software thing, meaning that the hardware is fine and will come online when you again install a ROM that supports it). On the other hand, with this ROM you can force the phone to roam on Verizon's network when Sprint's 3G speeds are less than desirable.
I'm not sure where to put this, so I'm sticking it here. As soon as you get custom recovery working, you want to backup with Nandroid. The easiest way is from ROM Manager. Just hit "Backup ROM". This backs up not only your setup (like Titanium Backup), but also all the crucial bits that lie underneath and keep your EVOs humming, bits very very difficult to replace. HOWEVER, this is NOT a replacement for Titanium Backup, because it can only restore to the same ROM. If you attempt to restore to a different one, it will put the one you had at the time of the backup back on.
Whichever way you go, I wish the both of you luck. You're entering into the wild and wonderful world of devices that you actually own!
that was a great post im in the same boat as those guys above and im sure we are not the only ones, when you say put the file on the root of the sd card what is the root of the sd card? if i dont know that should i just not even be rooting?

I just downloaded rom manager and i get the same response " an error occurred while attempting to run priviliged commands" i went through the root process and it said i was rooted, i read earlier that to check it i was rooted and nand unlocked that if i checked my hboot and it was 0.76 i was rooted and nand unlocked if i was 0.79 the root didnt work i was .76. Is there a different way to check if my root went through
The root of the SD card is the 'directory' you're in when you plug the card into the computer & you see folders like ".Mail" "Android" "DCIM" etc.
It's up to you if you think you can handle rooting. I used SimpleRoot & it was incredibly easy, but i have been familiar with modding phones for awhile now.

The root of something simply means not in a folder, e.g. on your computer it would be just G:/ (or whatever letter your SD card is mounted to). Just open the SD card and put whichever file you are referencing right there, not in any folder.
By the way, anyone can root, so long as you are willing to learn and willing to take a few risks. As long as you stay well informed, you usually don't break anything. And there is usually a way out, even if you make a train wreak, though it may be ugly. Independent developers (not me; smart people like Cyanogen and Toast who actually make these awesome ROMs and roots) have a better track record for keeping dangerous stuff out than some corporations. ***Cough***McAfee antivirus broke thousands of computers with a defective update***Cough*** Scientia est vox. Knowledge is power. Know what you're doing, and you'll be fine. You will make mistakes (I know I have), but stay sharp and know the consequences, how to go back, who to ask when things go South, and you'll do alright. The community here at XDA is one of the best and most helpful I have ever seen. If you're not totally hosed, someone will pull you out of the fire. It probably won't even be me. I'm no pro. But there is no shortage of pros here at XDA.

If titanium backup works, you have root. As for Clockwork, please see my first post, where I went over it in detail.
OK well i installed titanium back up and busy box and it looks like im rooted? Im going to try to flash that superuser app tmw i left my usb cord at work so in about 12 hours ill probly be back with more questions

It's personal preference, but there is a throughly cool free app called Awesome Drop that lets you send files without a cable. When you use it, files end up in the /drop directory on your phone. If necessary, you can move them out with a program like Astro File Manager.
By the way, Titanium backup shouldn't work without SU app, so I'm wondering if you do in fact have it. Have you looked through the S section of the App Drawer?

I just went through my S' and all i have are the ones that came with the phone no super user but when u say it shouldnt work what should happen when i open the app?

yeah when i open it it doesnt say that and it says my root access is ok,
I DL astro and when i open it one of the folders is clockwork mod and if i search i find super user app on my sd card when i reboot my phone by holding the down volume it goes to the hboot screen and askes me if i want to update my phone i say no and then when i go to recovery it does not give me the option to flash the super user app. it takes me to android system recovery with four options. At the very bottom it says E: cant open/cache/recovery/command
?

How to check if you are root: Assuming you have ADB installed (you used simpleroot so, possibly not) just type "adb shell" into a command prompt. If it comes up with a "#" you are root, if it comes up with "$" type "su" and hit enter, if it switches to a "#" you are rooted. Also you can get a terminal emulator app (I love Better Terminal Emulator) and open it, type "su" and see if it gives you "#".
Did you do the SimpleRoot step where you replaced the recovery with your recovery of choice? I know more than one person that didn't do that step. Though the app should at least still TRY to reboot.
As said before, check your SuperUser permissions to make sure you didn't disallow Rom Manager.
As for CM6, don't get me wrong, I LOVE CM6, but, Fresh 1.0.1 or the latest Damage Control might be a safer bet. For your first rom CM6 needs more coaxing than you might like. Also tethering is installed by default in the 2.1 roms from those guys and it's (imho) easier and more obvious to use.
Keep at it, there will be times you feel like giving up even after you get past this point, just don't take it too seriously and remember that as long as you are still getting phonecalls your phone is still doing it's primary job, the rest is just icing. Icing that gets more delicious with time, like beer, mmmmmm beer.

Crap, forgot, when someone says "put it on the root of the SD card" the easiest way to do that is hook it up via USB, hit the status tray that says "usb connected" and check the Hard Drive option. Then just copy your file to the new drive that will show up in windows (might pop up automatically depending on your windows settings) and boom, it's on the root of the SD card.
As for the "real" way to flash. Do the above, putting the .zip file containing whatever rom you want (for instance CM6, or Fresh 1.0.1 which you can obtain over in Development forum from their respective posts) on the root of the SD card. Safely remove the device (on windows it will be in your status bar, usually looks like a plug with a green arrow, click it, choose Mass Storage Device and then hit Stop, it will tell you when its done, make sure you have the folder closed before you do this or it will grump at you) and switch back over to Charge Only on your phone. Then power off the phone (hold the power button with the phone unlocked, choose Power Off, then Ok) and hold the volume down button. Then press power, don't let go of volume down but you don't have to hold power, just press it to turn it on. A white screen should come up, let go of the volume button, and one option will be Recovery. Use volume up and down to select it and press the power button to select. It should then boot you into recovery which should have an option to "wipe", you want to wipe dalvik cache, then cache, then factory defaults. Then go back up (in AmonRA that means hitting vol-up and vol-down at the same time), then goto "Flash .zip from sdcard" select it, hit power, select the zip file, power again, power one more time to confirm.
Once it's done you hit Reboot System Now and viola, first boot takes FOREVER so don't fret.

no the option i get is update to zip and when i click that it does stuff for me and i cannot choose a file i think my problem lies to not choosing what recovery i wanted?

It is possible. The program I mentioned earlier (unrEVOked) should install a custom recovery for you. I can't put a link in this post because I'm on my phone, but a quick google search should find it.

If you just did SimpleRoot (i.e. didn't download the android SDK) you probably don't have ADB installed on your PC. So then you'd want to go the terminal route. Search the market for Better Terminal Emulator

I recently rooted my Desire using unrevoked 3.2.1 Basically, no problems so far.
However, when I have tried to run a few Apps that require ROOT access, the Superuser pop-up screen shows, EVERY TIME.
I have clicked Allow, and made sure to check "Remember", but it comes back every time for the same Apps.
I have double-checked that the Apps requesting Superuser permissions are indeed in the Superuser.apk list for Allow. They are, little green dot and all, but it doesn't seem to matter.
I tried a Batch routine in Titanium Backup, and I had to click that damn Allow button like 150 times!
Does anyone have any idea what's going here? Anyone experienced the same thing?
I wonder if it is related to what mortenmhp mentioned over in this post (post 3, "Cant remove Stock apps? Root Explorer and Unrevoked3"; sorry, I can't link yet)...
the fact that unrevoked3 still does not achieve S-OFF HBOOT and thus doesn't r/w to /system.

Your problem should not have to do with this though.
The superuser app stores it's list on the data partition, and it should be able to grant su access to anything apart from rw to the protected partitions.
First off:
- Does it happen to all apps requesting su?
- Which version of superuser are you currently using?
- How did you get it? Like was it included in a rom or did you install it by flashing superuser only?
- If included in a rom, which?
And finally. You should start by trying to clear the data associated with the superuser app:
"settings -> applications -> application list* -> Superuser -> clear data button"
*I dont remember the exact name, and the charger for my desire is gone for now
If it does not work, you should also try to do a nandroid backup and a factory reset by wiping the data partition to see, if it doesn't fix it.

IIRC, I may have installed the App myself from the Market...? Is that even possible? Honestly, I may have jumped ahead of my knowledge in this one area. But I'm certain it wasn't from any flashing, unless unrevoked adds the App itself.
ROM, Froyo w/ HTC OTA Sept. update
I rooted with unrevoked3.2.1, but haven't flashed anything
(other than the Clockwork Mod as part of unrevoked, and, the ?re-flash? of Clockwork via ROM Manager)
The most noticeable example of this problem is Titanium Backup; I have to click Allow 14 times each time I open the App. And it is clearly listed in the Superuser List, with a green dot.
UPDATE: It is definitely possible to install this App directly from the Market, as I just re-did it. Then I Rebooted, but it all made no difference, still have 14 Allows in order to launch Titanium Backup
Results
Alright, I tried to "Clear Data", and then I did a reboot for good measure. It did NOT work.
The Superuser list was blank, but as soon as I started Titanium, I had to do the same 14 Allows. The Titanium>Log clearly shows each of them, but it's like the fact that the setting is "Remembered" doesn't have any effect.
I guess I can try the Nandroid back-up/wipe, but that just seems to be in the "format and reinstall Windows" family of solutions (no offense).
Other observation
Here's something else I noticed, may or may not be related.
I have Spare Parts installed, and I was testing the different settings.
First, Reboot/Recovery options ask for Superuser access, but then nothing happens, it just returns to the Spare Parts menu.
I'm interested in "upgrading" my boot animation (I have another thread about that), so I also tried the LeoFroyo Addon of Bootanimation>LeoFroYo BIOS
It Requested Superuser access, delayed while "Working...", and then asked to Reboot. When I clicked Yes, nothing. Just went back to the Spare Parts menu. When I rebooted manually, the stock HTC animation is still what I got.
Relaunching Spare Parts confirmed that the bootanimation setting was still on the upgrade, it apparently just didn't work.
The reason I mention these things is because I wonder if possibly I haven't achieved all the ROOT access that maybe I should have???
Any other thoughts? I'm not sure what else to try, but I can provide any other details that would be useful.
Maybe I'm just fighting a pointless losing battle on this, since I plan to flash to Cyanogen anyway. But it just find it irksome that I can't find a solution to a relatively straightforward issue.
It is because you cannot just install the superuser app from the market, because it needs root in the first place. This might just be your problem. I cant find the update.zip only including superuser right now, so if you want cm anyway, I would just go for it. Otherwise you will have to search for a zip file only including the superuser files or another rom with it included.

I think you're right. Don't know what I read to carelessly make me think I could just download Superuser from the Market. Actually, I'm not even too sure why its on there, since it CANNOT work if you install it that way.
I guess when I installed Superuser to grant ROOT permissions, I didn't have ROOT permissions. So, Superuser could grant other Apps ROOT (which did work), but it didn't have ROOT itself to store the Allow list. How ironic.
When I get to a computer, I'll add that linked zip as an attachment to this thread, along with some flashing Instructions in case anyone else is less familiar.
It must be pretty uncommon to do the work to get ROOT and then not flash a custom ROM with Superuser built in.

just in case(copied),
Transfer this zip file file to your SD card. Remember where you saved it.
Reboot the phone into Recovery
(Boot the phone by holding down either the circle button or Volume Down button, then press the Power button. Select Recovery from the menu. (You can navigate the menus with the volume button, and make selections with the round button thingy).)
Select Install zip from SD card and navigate to where you copied the zip file and install. Watch out: Do NOT select the similar-looking apply sdcard:update.zip menu item. You have to confirm by selecting the correct ZIP file from a list.

How to get S =off and superuser permissions
Make sure you are on 2.2.1 software and fastboot is turned off, usb debugging is turned on and phone not connected to computer via usb cable... before u attempt this.
First make sure you have visionary(downlod link) and terminal emulator(market) installed.

1. Download the root.rar file and unzip it to /sdcard on your device.(it should be a folder after unzip.[place the whole folder called root directly into sdcard])
2. Run VISIONary to gain temp root. Open visionary and check "set system r/w after root" then click on "temproot"..screen will go blank..thats normal.
Now open terminal and run some commands.
Terminal Emulator Method
3a. Start terminal emulator up on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/root" + enter.
c. Type "sh root.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the on screen prompts.
Turn off your phone and hold vol down and power. on the top u will see s =off.
select "fastboot" then shutdown or powerdown. Power you phone back on.
Open terminal and typr "su"..it will say permission denied. Thats normal
Now open visionary again. Make sure "set system r/w after root" checked then click on "temproot"..screen will go blank.. thats normal. Now click on "Attempt Permroot now" phone is reboot and you are all set
Go back into terminal and type "su" and it will say user permissions granted.

Flash a Custom ROM----Make sure fastboot is off and usb debugging is on.
1. Before we flash anything lets flash clockwork so that you are able to get into recovery. From the market download Rom manager(free). Open rom manager and click on "flash clockworkmod recovery". Wait few min. Rom manager will download and flash clockwork. Turn your phone off and Hold vol down and power. In the hboot menu select recovery and then the phone will restart. You will get a phone with yellow triangle error. Thats normal. Don't panic. Take the battery out for couple on min. Turn the phone back on. Open Rom manager again. Now click on "flash clockworkmod recovery". It will flash the recovery second time. We are doing this to make the clockworkmod stick. Now turn the phone off and see if you can get into recovery again. It should work.
2. Make sure you are permrooted and S =off. Also make sure you are able to get into recovery before you start flashing stuff. Download rom from XDA developers and save it to your computer.
3. Once it is saved, plug in your phone via USB cable and mount the SD card so we can save files to the sd card.
4. Copy the ROM’s .zip file over to the root of the sd card (NOT in any folders on the sd card, just on the root of the card) (do NOT extract it, leave it as a .zip).
5. In the custom recovery screen, select Nandroid then Backup and backup your current ROM.
6. Then select Wipe Data and wipe caches.
7. Then select Apply ".zip from sd card" and choose the ROM you downloaded earlier.
8. Once it is done flashing, click reboot system. Once it reboots, you are all set. Enjoy!

Well I thought since he is going to the extent on detailing all the steps he might as well talk about the ROM Manager and recovery. Someone will say how do I get in to custom recovery if it is not mentioned that it is needed. If you are going the detail route then this should be included IMHO. I think this will help many new users.
I meant as far as the s off and rom flashing. I agree with you though that cw needs to be outlined a little better I just didn't mention it b/c he said he was going to add it later.

I also just flashed a rom using this tutorial and I can tell you it's pretty noob friendly. I mean I have flashed softwares on other phones but never on an android, once again great guide.
i followed this method and when it rebooted after the "perm root" my phone keeps getting this error: The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I can't really use my phone at this point.. any suggestions?

Just wait, how long have you had the phone? On my first mt4g it took over a day to get my OTA update, but on my second one it only took an hour till I got mine. I've seen some people not get it till almost a week later.

Either Nandroid back or perform fix permissions via rom manager application.
i was never able to install the rom manager after it rebooted.. i only have maybe less than a second to do anything until the next force close pops back up.
Ive had it 3 days my g2 got the update like within 45min lol

Not really sure what went wrong. Did u make sure u were on 2.2.1 before you preformed the root method. I have tried these methods and never failed yet.

Hey Mackster248 the videos look good. The only thing is the root video by u uses visionary r11 and so visionary r14 has more options than last version so some people might get confused. what u say?
[Edit: I've now resolved this issue. Thanks to all who helped. Please see end of thread for my solution. I've made some edits below too. When things looked bad, the solution was to remove the microSD card, copy and load a more reliable PC36IMG.zip (there are a huge number out there), and only then could I use adb when the red triangle was present. Note that just renaming stuff randomly or worrying about the USB cable isn't a proper way to come up with a solution even though I did it also (and that may be the case for some units but it can't be the general problem or solution). I'd guess there's a huge amount of misinformation out there and some people may have tried random stuff but it looks like from playing with all this, there is a method to the madness of how phone and the adb communicate, as well as how the phone loads, and once you UNDERSTAND HOW that process, all this stops being so much of a black magic.
Note that the problem I had was because I used an outdated set of instructions. Here are the ones that worked for me in the end:

I was trying to get to root using the method at evo4g.me.
And I got a red triangle after the first application of the PC36IMG.ZIP. I then held the volume up and power button and, I get a blue lettered screen with 4 options:

wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
Well, I've seemingly tried everything but I can't seem to get past this screen. I've pulled the battery out and rebooted, I go back to the above screen. Option 1 above gets me back to the same spot. Option 2 says it can't find sdcard/update.zip. I did option 3 but it does that and turns off and on and comes back to this same position. Even when I try to hold the volume button down. When I try to access this using adb, I get "device offline".
I can take the battery out, hold the volume down button, and then power on, and it takes me the through the same steps as before and I don't seem to have control over the choice of whether it should load the PC36IMG.ZIP file or not (i.e., the menu I see before it doesn't to be controllable by me).
So I'm at a loss. I really would like to finish this process and get to root, which shouldn't be too hard in my view but here I am.
I could move the SD card elsewhere and put an update.zip file on there but I'm not sure what to do here exactly so I can recover (and hopefully with root). Is this the correct thing to be thinking about? Move the SD card to another device, replace the .ZIP file, and then go from there? Is there a way to do this without moving the SD card?
[Edit: this is indeed what I did in the end. I found the correct PCIMG.zip file by trial and error.]

BTW, I backed up all my apps on my sdcard so I should be fine right? I'm not sure what I'd need to do reinstall them.

That is the stock recovery you are seeing there, does it let you do anything at all in the bootloader? If you can get it into fastboot mode you can fix it from there.
I rooted using regaw's instructions also, and also got that damn triangle, lol. Pretty sure all I did was reboot to bootloader and let it update the PC36.img again to get out of it.

Yes, I believe so. I can let the PC36IMG.ZIP reload again and then AFTER that I can say "no" to the update and then "no" to reboot devices and I can get into a menu that says:
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HSB USB
From there I can select FASTBOOT and head into another menu that says:
BOOTLOADER
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN
Trying BOOTLOADER gets me through the same HBOOT cycle where the PC36IMG.ZIP is reloaded and asked to be applied. Trying REBOOT gives me a white HTC screen (unless I need to wait a while).
Thanks! I assume I need to pull the SD card out, load it on my computer through another source, and then remove the PC36IMG.ZIP file and then replace it with something else that I can use to get rooted? Or will just removing the PC36IMG.ZIP file do it?
I'm also looking to achieve root so if I am going to the trouble of removing the SD card and putting it back, I'd like to know if if there's another PC36IMG.ZIP that'll let me have a nice version of the HTC evo that is rooted.

what versions do you guys have on your phones?
If the hboot is still .97 you can used unrevoked forever for a full root and nand unlock.
if higher there is a tutorial on these forums for Hboot 2.02.

I do agree having root on these systems will be fantastic. I don't understand why it's not just a ready option. Things like tethering, etc. should be a given and built into the $10 cost or something else of the network. I'd like to port things like csh on there, and have a powerful terminal like I can get in the Mac OS X. Is there any way this is possible at all? We can get bigger and bigger microSD cards right? An entire stripped down Linux system can fit in a few gigs (but I want to be able to use it as a phone too).

The instructions at the above URL are what I used to get to this place with the red triangle that I can't seem to get out of. I can no longer access the phone using adb so I can't push anything. I can't access the phone through my computer right now once it has become stuck at the red triangle, this is my main issue. No access. Nothing. It just says "error: device offline" no matter what I try.

"If this doesn't work (ie the PC36IMG.zip does NOT load) backup all of your sdcard contents onto your computer, reformat your sdcard to FAT32, redownload the PC36IMG.zip, and drag and drop it onto the sdcard, then reboot into the bootloader and try again. This should fix the issue."
It worked for me, but I don't know what hardware version and all you have.

just pull the sd card out of the evo (behind the battery) and put the new img on the root of the card.

Me too, but I pay for the extra warranty that's supposed to cover nearly everything, which I think should cover this.
So from the above instructions, am I to understand that I remove the sdcard out and clean it out in my computer and install a new PC36IMG?

Well, I solved this problem and am now enjoying root. Thanks to all who helped. I followed the instructions here:

But I still couldn't get past step 10. I even read the FAQ and followed the renaming suggestions (this wasn't the issue but I did it anyway) and it still didn't work. Basically the problem was that I wasn't even able to get to the shell even though I was able to use adb to push files (weird?).
So I was playing around with the EVO-recovery.zip (http://www.knowyourcell.com/htc/htc-evo-4g/evo-4g-guides/463925/how_to_root_the_htc_evo_4g.html) and ran the recovery-linux.sh script, which then put me into the green recovery screen. The rest was straight forward after that (as per the instructions at the URL above). So perhaps the difference of which adb to use was what it was, since that zip file comes with its own adb.
I am now rooted. Now what?
My wi fi doesn't seem to work, and neither does the google wireless tethering app, which is one of the reasons I wanted to root. When I run "adb shell" I now get a "#" instead of a "$" so I assume this (among other things, including the S-OFF) means I am rooted. So no wi-fi, did I trash something?
[Edit: I fixed this by installing the fresh ROM; thanks chris66 and others who helped!]
I'm just using the stock ROM provided from the URL above. Not sure what the best one to use is and how to use it.
[Edit: Stil no idea. Way too many ROMs out there. It's crazy. Fresh seems to have a good rep. It works pretty well, after one week.]
I also backed up all my apps on my sdcard, is there a way to restore them in one quick fell swoop instead of opening them one by one?
[Edit: I figured out how to do the multiselection option and apply it apps. A good file manager will do the backups for you. I went from ASTRO to ES File Explorer. Latter looks slightly cleaner. Probably better ones out there.]

Maybe I was wrong but before I put the new ROM on I didn't think the "more" command was available.]
Cool, try superuser and the wifi app from the market. Flash almost any of the newer roms, and they're already both usable, wifi and usb.

There are a few guides out there already, but I was interested in leaving the G-Slate as untouched as possible. I didn't like the idea of flashing the bootloader, etc.
Background:
To root a device you simply need get the APK (SU GUI) at /system/app/Superuser.apk and su at /system/su with permissions of rwxr-xr-x plus "Set UID" and "Set GID" or 6755. The easiest way I could think to do this was too load clockwork recovery, then flash the superuser.zip to the /system partition. Here is how to do that...
Files needed:
Download what you need to get fastboot on you PC. There are many ways for Windows, Linux and Apple; just google.
Download the Clockwork Recovery 5.5.0.4 from the link on this page: http://code.google.com/p/lg-v909/wiki/Unlock_boot
(use something like 7-zip, to un-gzip/tar the file to get "recovery.img" out of it. Put in on your PC somewhere near your fastboot files...maybe even in the same directory as fastboot.exe.)
Download SuperUser from http://goo-inside.me/superuser (Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip is most current today.)
If you are using windows, download the Windows Device Drivers for the G-Slate here: http://code.google.com/p/lg-v909/wiki/Install_Windows_Drivers
Process Part 1 temporarily boot G-Slate into Clockwork Recovery:
Copy the Superuser.zip file to the G-Slate SD Card. Remember where you put it. I put mine in /download/ (which looks like /sdcard/download/ on the Android system)
Shutdown the G-Slate completely by holding down the power button until you are prompted to shutdown. (Don't just shut the screen off by quickly clicking the power button.)
While holding down the the "Volume Up" button, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds. Continue hold the "Volume Up" button while releasing the power button. When you see "Starting Fastboot USB download protocol" in the upper left you can release the "Volume Up" button.
Connect the G-Slate to your PC with a USB cable
Wait until the windows device drivers complete loading.
Open a terminal windows (Command or CMD in windows) and navigate to your fastboot executables (if they are not already in your path) and run the command "fastboot devices". You should see a device listed with "fastboot" after it. If not, sort out what is wrong with the G-Slate device drivers for your OS.
run the command "fastboot oem unlock". I am not sure if this was required, but it can't hurt.
run the command "fastboot boot recovery.img"...you should see the G-Slate boot into Clockwork Recovery.
(you are done with the PC)
Process Part 2 flash SuperUser:
Using the volume up and down keys navigate to "Install ZIP from sdcard", press the power button to execute it.
Using Volume Up/Down and Power to pick "Choose ZIP from sdcard"
Using Volume Up/Down and Power navigate to where you put the "Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip" file and pick it.
Using Volume Up/Down and Power to pick "Yes - Install update.zip"...when it is finished, you are Rooted!!! Navigate "BACK" a few screens and pick "Reboot".
You should ave "Superuser" in your applications...and when you run something like Titanium Backup, you should be prompted to OK root permissions.
Now, without flashing recovery, you have installed Superuser to /System. No other modifications have been made to the device.
From here I generally, update all the google apps in market. Run Titanium Backup to uninstall bloatware installed on the System partion and then Menu-->batch-->"Integrate updates of system apps into ROM" which basically means move the APKs in /data/app that have updated APK's /system/app from data to system...saving a bunch of data space.

I just edited some minor issues...and verified the steps...so sorry #13 is now the #4 on the second part.
At any rate, that "Yes - Install update.zip" is the second prompt after you pick "Choose ZIP from sdcard" when you pick file "Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip" (or similar). In other words, there is no update.zip...it just that the verification (aka "are you sure?") prompt is badly titled with "update.zip".
If you flash "Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip" (or similar) and it shows success, you are done. Back out of CW recovery and reboot. After you boot again, you should see a new app in your "apps" titled "superuser".
Did everything and No Root It didn't show up in apps list.

for whatever reason... the gslate root thread was closed apparently and i didn't event notice it until now when i tried to log in to post about an update prompt i got just a few minutes ago.. anyway, im assuming the other thread got closed due to the little drama that happened in there..
we should keep this thread going, we all know that the device has reached EOL on tmobile but there are gslate owners around who are tied to a contract with them, like me!
so i got an update but wasn't sure what it was for and was afraid to install it because of my slate's setup, rooted and with a different kernel.. not risking to mess it up so i didn't install the update and i doubt it was ICS anyway..
I got the update also.. I decided to let it ride its course to see what would happen. I was half way asleep when I did this, otherwise I wouldn't have done it. In the middle of the update the device just froze on me. I had to push the little reset button in the back to get out if it. That's really all that happened.

we should keep this thread going, we all know that the device has reached EOL on tmobile but there are gslate owners around who are tied to a contract with them, like me!
so i got an update but wasn't sure what it was for and was afraid to install it because of my slate's setup, rooted and with a different kernel.. not risking to mess it up so i didn't install the update and i doubt it was ICS anyway..

Agreed. I hate to say it (or not) but this is probably the last LG device I buy because of this. I bought this tablet because I had such great support with my Optimus phone (running a reasonably stable ICS right now from CM9 port). I realize now, unless LG sells a million of a device you won't ever see an update again because only the community hacks updates. LG takes the money and runs. :-(
Hello fellow Gslate users... Lol. Has anyone gotten this update and updated there tablet yet? Without losing root or getting the bootloader locked again??? I haven't updated it yet.. But would like to... I've heard the ICS for our Gslate is coming soon (alpha)

we got a really minor update , could it possibly mean that LG might still be supporting the device? hopefully we'll see ICS on the gslate , im still hoping we do .. otherwise, at least some nice devs have not abandoned the gslate and are still developing for it..
lately i've been thinking of calling tmobile to possibly trade it for that galaxy tab even if i have to pay a little more, not sure if they do that though.

Do they have the legal right to do that to someone who paid cash for and owns the g-slate?
I lost access to all my apps. Technically speaking, my g-slate is now useless. And I feel left in the dark.
... that's why im not installing the update, it is not a worthy update, nothing wrong with my tablet at all except for the 3d camera, but i don't need it anyway.

You mean all your apps? Or just the apps that need root access only?
What I would do first, is do a titaniumbackup then a factory rest, backup all your files/data of course.... If that doesn't work, try to revert back to stock honeycomb 3.0.1 if that's even possible, or stock 3.1 with locked bootloader then unlock it later...
Im not sure honestly, but do things at your own risk..
Okay, ive been doing my research, and I lasted aprox. 4-5 days and its sadly to know but this phone (HTC Evo Design 4G / Kingdom / Hero S) doesnt have that much of fame. But I was crazy trying and trying alot of methods trying to root my phone, but just couldnt. I was about to give up, until I found a Guide, and made it possible for me to root the phone, so I decided to share this guide to you guys, to who ever has a HTC Evo Design 4G / Kingdom / Hero S. Credits go to LOLINTERNET who wrote this guide. :good:
Ok, here we go. :laugh:
In order to root your Evo Design you'll need to unlock your bootloader, flash recovery, flash su binary, and install superuser and busybox. In this guide I will try to explain these steps as simply as I can. My goal is for it to be thorough enough that anyone that reads it can root their phone and enjoy the full benefits of this nifty little phone.
First and foremost, you will need to install the Java SE Development Kit. You won't use this directly in any way, but you need it in order to install the Android SDK.

After installing the Java JDK, you will have to install the Android SDK which contains two tools that are essential to gaining root. They are adb (Android Debug Bridge) and fastboot. These tools are used to send files to your phone from a Windows command prompt. You will need these tools to unlock your bootloader and flash recovery.

How to add packages to the SDK
Once you have the Java JDK and the Android SDK installed you will need to install the proper drivers for your phone. This one is pretty straightforward and necessary for your phone to be recognized while plugged into your computer. After you have the HTC drivers installed you can begin the fun parts, but first you will need a few things. :good:

You will need a recovery.img. 2fast4u88's unofficial ClockWorkMod Recovery version 5.0.2.7 and 5.0.2.8 are the only two recoveries I have used since I got my Evo Design. Many thanks to him for putting in so much work to get this device where it is today.

Also, you'll need su binary version 3.0.3.2 efghi. This is the actual file that will root your device. It is a flashable .zip file that you save to your sdcard and flash in recovery. You'll be amazed at how easy this step is.

3.0.3.2 binary is for Gingerbread and 3.0.7 is for ICS
The superuser app is like the control center for apps that request root permissions after you're finally rooted. You will need to install this app and then Busybox, both of which can be found in the Google Play Store. After installing the Busybox app you will need to actually install busybox. The app itself is basically an installer for Linux applets that are required by root apps such as Titanium Backup and Root Explorer among many others.
Now that you have a basic overview of what it is you will be doing and the files need to do it, the only thing left is to actually perform these steps and root your device. So, lets do this!
1. Unlock your bootloader at htcdev.com. You will need to sign up and you will be warned that unlocking your bootloader will void your warranty. Once you've followed all instructions at the website an unlock token will be emailed to you. DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE. You can place it in the platform tools folder of the Android SDK and use fastboot in command prompt to relock and unlock your bootloader whenever you like. Also, anytime you unlock your bootloader all data will be wiped so be sure you sync all your contacts and backup other information first before performing this step.
2. After unlocking your bootloader you will need to flash a recovery.img. The manual way to flash recovery is to place the downloaded recovery.img for 2fast4u88's unofficial ClockWorkMod recovery port of version 5.0.2.7 in the platform-tools folder of the Android SDK. Power down your phone but be sure that Fast Boot in Power under the settings menu is unchecked or it will just reboot normally instead of into bootloader (also called hboot) like you want. After it's been powered down for a minute or two, press and hold Volume down then press and hold the power button. When the white HTC splash screen appears you can let go. Scroll down with the volume down button and select fastboot by pressing power. Plug your phone into your computer and open a command prompt, then run these commands without quotations.
"cd C:\android\platform-tools" (This is where adb and fastboot live. It may be different for you depending on where you installed the SDK. I always suggest installing it to the root of your C: drive.)
"fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Should only take a few seconds, then you have yourself a recovery partition and you can proceed to the next step after rebooting. Yay!
3. Next, we're going to flash the su binary in recovery. First, you'll need to place it on your sdcard. Doesn't matter where exactly just as long as you can find it. I would suggest the root of your sd just to make things easier on yourself. After you have the su binary zip saved to your sdcard power off your phone and boot into hboot. Now, I can't remember which, but either hboot or fastboot will have an option to boot into Recovery. Once you're booted into recovery, select "install zip from sdcard," then "choose zip from sdcard." Scroll down and find the su binary then select it. Pressing the Up Vol button will take you directly to the end if you don't want to scroll all the way through. After selecting the su binary zip select "yes" to flash. It's a small file, so it won't take long. When it's done select "reboot to system" and we'll move on to the next step because you just rooted your phone.
4. But, you're not done yet. You need to install the superuser app and the busybox app in that order. This is the easy part because both apps are free in the Play Store. Install Superuser, then Busybox. You shouldn't have to interact with the Superuser app, but if you want to set an automatic response to apps that request root you can open it and go to Preferences. Scroll down and you should see a few options. I have mine set to automatically grant su permission to apps that request it because I have no reason not to lol. I also unchecked the option to receive a notification every time an app is granted root permission because that junk just gets annoying. Next, after you install the Busybox app, you'll need to actually install Busybox. The app is merely an installer for the actual Busybox applets that govern root apps. The app should open automatically after you install it. You should see it in your notification bar. Open it up and follow the prompts. When you're done, reboot your phone.
5. Check If you have rooted your phone successfully, download Root Checker on Play Store.
6. Congratulations! You should now have a rooted Evo Design 4G. Enjoy. I hope this guide is both complete and comprehensive enough that everyone can enjoy the benefits of having a rooted device, but if I've missed something or if you have any questions whatsoever, please post them here and I will do my best to answer them in a timely manner. I hope you enjoy rooting your device, but please be careful. You now have administrator privileges, so use them wisely. I would highly suggest installing Quick Boot from the Play Store so that you can boot into recovery easily without having to go through hboot. I would also suggest using your newly installed app that requires root access to boot into recovery and make a backup. If anything should ever happen to your phone's system and data you will have a backup and can restore it to that state. Again, I hope you enjoy. I apologize for this being such a lengthy guide, but hopefully you understand the wonderful world of Android a little better for having read it. :good:
*EXTRA* 7. I recommend doing a backup via recovery of your phone, because this phone doesnt seem to have any roms or any stock roms etc, so i recommend making a backup, but dont worry, ill try to make a backup ROM so there could be one on the internet, because I searched and could find one! :s

Just went from my JB IPhone 5 (cellular happened to break). now i have this phone lol (but its so slow and useless I decided to root and it was an unbelievable pain.. nothing worked).
