I apologize if this has been asked before. I searched (possible that I didn't search hard enough) but couldn't find anything.
Anyway, is it normal for the EVO 4G to have pretty pitiful Wi-Fi? What I mean is that I get terrible reception. My girlfriend's blackberry and my two brother's 2nd gen iPod Touch's get great Wi-Fi throughout the whole house. Both of my parents have notebooks and they don't have any issues either. If I'm about an inch from the wireless router I get full bars and 12mbps down (it's a G router) 12mbps up (according to the speedtest.net app), but the connection speed and signal immediately drops a significant amount as soon as I leave the room. The other devices don't have this problem. They maintain most of the speed and only lose a little bit of signal strength.
I know Sprint released an OTA update prior to Froyo that was supposed to address WiFi issues, but I was never able to do it because I was rooted and running a custom ROM (not based on that OTA update) prior to that. Now I'm running the latest Cyanogen nightly and I still get pitiful Wi-Fi
Anyone else experiencing similar issues?
Thanks!
Have you flashed the latest radio's?
My wifi reception was mediocre at best on 2.1, and when I went to Fresh 3.1.0.1 Froyo it pretty much was the same. Funny thing is though, I had only flashed the most recent radio (.28), I hadn't flashed the wimax radio because I don't live in a 4g area and didn't see the need for it. A few days after I flashed the new rom and radio I decided that it would probably be good to keep everything up to date regardles of whether it was needed or not, so I flashed the latest wimax radio. All of a sudden I have excellent wifi reception, before I could barely get a working wifi signal 20 feet from the router, now I get the same signal I was getting at 20 feet from the router 75 feet away.
To tell you the truth, I have no idea why it did this after flashing the wimax radio, as I was under the impression that the wimax radio had nothing to do with wifi, could be a coincidence, but it worked for me. The highest I ever got before at 20 feet from the router was 2 bars, now at the same place I get full bars, and I now get 2-3 bars at the opposite end of the house from the router where I got no wifi signal at all before.

Awesome I'll give that a shot!
Yeah it makes no sense at all, and even if it was only a coincidence I'm still willing to try it. I too upgraded to the latest radio but skipped the 4G radio update because for 1, my area doesn't have 4G, and because the ROM I'm currently using doesn't support 4G yet
Thanks again! I'll report back with my updated findings!
Unfortunately I don't think I helped my wifi signal definitely worth a shot though. I'm going to Nandroid backup my cm6 and flash to a rom based of sprint's Froyo update to see if wifi signal strength increases.

I have numerous devices that I connect to my work WiFi, but for some reason my new Sprint Epic 4G Touch will not hold a connection to the WiFi. Sometimes it connects fine, other times it says "obtaining IP address".
Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm also from Ohio and some areas are bad, but you can call Sprint and complain about your service and they'll give you a Rave that well help out a lot.

WiFi
I believe he commented having problems with WIFI, which Sprint has no control over.
I have observed similar issues. It was exciting getting the phone to pop up on Spotify on my computer without doing anything, but shortly thereafter it seemed like the WIFI was not really working.
In my house, my Evo 3Ds have full bars when connecting to WIFI, and always works. Last night, on the E4gT, I had barely one bar (on the WIFI symbol) and I kept not being able to get emails. Then, I tried playing HBO Go and MAX Go, and I could only hear but not see anything. I got no error messages, except once got the "this is an audio only stream. For video, please get a better signal or connect to WIFI". I rechecked and I was connected to WIFI. I did a speedTest with Ookla, 22MBPS...Then I changed servers (in the Ookla program) and tried again. It went down to 400kbps.
The night before, both the WIFI and the 3G symbols were on at the same time. The 3G symbol didn't seem to be colored, so I figured it was on sleep mode, but then again, the speeds were slow so it could be WIFI was being screwy.
Can't guarantee there's something wrong with the WIFI, but it definitely felt like it had issues on my part. Whether that was connecting and looking for IP or something else, I'm not sure.
I'll keep an eye on the lookout for any answers to your issue.
Thanks for the response. Between the WiFi issue and a separate issue I am having with dropped signals, this phone may be heading back to Sprint.

Had the same problem, wifi signal with no color 3g on,when i went into wifi settings its always scaning...
I'm having lots of wifi issues as well. I had to lay my e4gt down right next to my dual-band e4200 to get a good signal, but even with a good signal, the phone sometimes pauses for minutes when trying to download or browse the web. And if the wifi signal is weak, I get no data transfer at all.
WoW, so far I have had no issues with wifi. Hell even Kies in wifi mode works good.
Normal wifi linked to my router works great.
Wifi direct works great
Kies in wifi mode works great.
I have never missed a email or txt msg. Streaming audio and video from the web is great, no stutter or issues to report. Grabing apps from the market is super fast.
I am with Time Warner and my internet speed is set to 15 meg down with burst to 30 meg down - I get a solid 15 meg down, 1 meg upload solid.
I am using both wired and wireless with my Linksys router.
It might help (statistically) if folks with/without wifi problems noted which signal was connecting (g/b/n/2.4ghz/5ghz/...)
3G instead of WIFI
I'm guessing you're into something there.
WIFI on, 3G icon shows => using 3G instead of WIFI.
I've also noticed those "minute" delays on using 4G. 4G gets up to 5 MBPS at my office. Evo 3D was getting up to 6.5MBPS. However, the wind could be blowing north instead of south, or a bird could have passed by the 4G signal path or...<insert silly remarks here>
Nonetheless, I get 4G. But even then, I'll open my mail to check a message and I'll have to wait for a minute and nothing will happen. Go back to inbox, then back to the message, nothing. Signal shows 4G on Zzz status as indicating that I'm not trying to use it (but is available). When it works, it's fast, but then it does not always work, which shows concern. So if we have problems with WiFi, and 4G, and 3G connection sucks, for a phone specially designed to be a multimedia monster...it's hard to stream without issues...
I'll be doing some more tests. 14 day return policy sucks, but have silly Best Buy protection plan, and I'm guessing they might still abide to their own 30 day return policy for Rewards members...
Now, I've heard of people complaining about complete crash of their radio, where there will be no signal whatsoever to make/receive calls, sms, data, etc. I haven't experienced these, and I'm still on stock, and I probably just jinxed myself too...sigh... But I wonder if the two issues are somehow related.
It could be software related, maybe need an update, or a better-than-original kernel, or who knows.
I did do the following changes:
RTSP Proxy Address changed to 0.0.0.0
RTSP Proxy Port to 0
HTTPPD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
HTTPPD Proxy Port to 0
But I still have same issues.
In the other hand, I can go to the HBOGo website and somewhat see videos (it's very cumbersome).

My Linksys router model = WRT54GL
Channel = channel 6 - 2.437 GHZ
Now how do you find out what signal I am connected with since I am using "mixed" wireless network mode.
Note in my wireless network mode I only have 4 settings -
a. disabled
b. mixed
c. B-only
d. G-only
So by the looks of it I can only do B and G modes on my Linksys router.
Well this is very interesting. I sat in the family room with my old epic 4g in one hand and my new e4gt in the other hand. epic 4g doesn't do 5ghz so I used 2.4ghz N for both phones. My epic 4g had 5 bars on wifi and my e4gt had 1 bar side by side. I ran a speed test on both phones. My epic 4g got 15mbs (15,000k) down and 3mbs (3000k) up. My e4gt got 1.5mbs (1500k) down and 1.5mbs (1500k) up. So, my new super phone is exactly 10 times slower on my home wifi, apparently due to very low signal. I tried my e4gt on 5ghz N as well, but it was even slower. Not good. I may have to return the e4gt and keep the old Epic 4g. I like the new phone, but the wifi and 3g signal issues won't work for me.
I wow, 10 times slower. Obviously this is a major flaw, but why isnt' everyone having the problem? I actually drained my battery yesterday trying to connect to WiFi
Supposedly they stopped giving out free raves from now on on

It would be great if others would test theirs and report back. Maybe I got a lemon and need to return it?
My problem with WiFi is it isn't switching from one channel to another. I have 3 wireless access points with the same SSID on 3 different channels. The phone locks onto the first one and never switches to a better signal unless the signal degrades to 0. All my other wireless devices will switch as I roam around the building.
Also, I've noticed that even if I am sitting next to the wireless access point, my signal meter never reads more than a 3 ^ symbols.

I just got a free Rave last month, service in my area sucked so bad they pretty much had no choice but to give me one, Maybe they stopped giving them out cause eventually everyone would have them. I'm in a non 4G city and my speeds are horrible, almost useless. Verizon's LTE looks mighty good right now...and the caps don't bother me cause I barely use 2 gigs a month. So a 5gig plan would be a good cushion...
But about the wifi, in my basement which is right below where I have my router I had one bar of wifi and it was SLOOOOOW. When I went right next to the router the speeds were top notch. Sometimes I like to sit outside and mess around on my phone, but I highly doubt the signal will even reach the phone through an Insulated wall if it has trouble going through a non insulated floor... My Epic 4G never had that Issue...

The change was just effective last week check out the sprintusers.com thread. They are cutting out all discounts prior to the iphone launch
Just out of curiosity....Could someone Use the speedtest.net and run a test on 3G no 4G and post back what their UPLOAD speed was. Mine is 75 kbps and that is way too slow...if others have this issue then I know it's messed up, but if it's mine, then I need to head to a sprint store...I started a thread about this, lots of people read it, but no one posted one comparison...a simple test and a simple reply....easy does it...thanks!
Is wifi supposed to say scanning the whole time?

Then it looks like I got one just in time then. Cause it helps so much, I can be anywhere in my house even in my basement and I have almost full bars. But ever since I got the E4GT I can't get the damn uploads to get past 100 kbps I seen other people don't have this problem...what gives? Is it possible to have a bug in mine that affects the upload speed?
Hey all,
I'm curious to how your reception is on the VZ GNex. I still have my Rezound here and it seems like I'm getting about -20db worse on the GNex compared to the Rezound. I'm curious - has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks,
Super
yeah, and it is killing me. In the same spot in my room I had my rezound, I had MUCH MUCH better signal strengh. I could keep 4G all day, which is why I switched from sprint to verizon. Thunderbolt, Droid Bionic, Rezound, all worked fine. The GN looses 4G consistantly. This might be a deal breaker for me. I am going to try a custom rom in a min when it finishes downloading, but I doubt that will help. Also am on 4.0.2.
on the thunderbolt there was a setting that allowed us to change when it "lost" 4G signal. I.E. it would allow the phone to pick up a weak signal. Does anyone know if there is a setting like this? I know the signal isn't weak in my house from the previous phones, so it is either a setting like this, or the GN has a really crappy radio...
The 3g and 4g on my Nexus is very bad and not even usable. It is either dropped or barely working. Without wi-fi my phone would have been useless today.
If this isn't correct quickly I will have no choice but to go back to my Thunderbolt which was great!
Service at my apartment just sucks but it's getting the same reception as my OG Droid
I had a rezound and was certainly getting a better signal, 2 things I noticed on the rezound was the battery door actually had antenna relays in it, and also there was 3 settings on the rezound for network performance (performance, normal, and battery saver)
I get horrible signal strength in spots, like on my way home from work there are several short distances where it just drops the signal all together.
At home, my phone seems to just drop connection completely and it's having a hard time picking it up again. Noticed this morning it had been without network access all night. Rebooted it and everything was OK (strong signal) in the exact same physical location.
does any body know how to update roaming with this phone I tried *228 but that didn't work
I am having similar issues in regards to network dropping out. I can understand why 4g would -being limited coverage and all- but 3g should seamlessly pick up where it drops off, plus my voice signal is much lower -100dBmw vs -85/-90dBm which I got with my OG Droid.

You can't update roaming on LTE devices, as the sim card automatically does it. What you can do is a "sim reset" type thing.
Power off, and leave your sim card out for like 5 minutes. Put it back in and turn on the phone. According to multiple sources, this will cause the sim to have to re-register on the network, thus refreshing/updating your privs.
Rezound is way better reception wise. Matter of fact, the Rezound is better at a lot of key things! Ima give this a chance but I gotta say I miss my Rezzy!!

WOW.... my Nexus data was very bad and almost unusable, but now it is fixed!
I didn't want to, but I did a factory data reset and it resolved the data issues. Everything is solid connections now and holding steady. Before the signal was bouncing all over the place.
Give the factory data reset a try if you are having issues. Yes you have to start over but it's better than having a phone that doesn't work.
Phew... now I am happy again! I really thought I was going to have to go back to my Thunderbolt.
OK. I did some digging. I recommend all users download an app called sensorly. It would appear that the reported signal strength by default is 4G. Currently, my 4G is is teetering at -100dBm to no signal and that shows on my phone as no bars. However, I discovered that my 3G is at -90 dBm (excellent coverage). From what I have researched it would appear that the phone has issues handshaking between 3G and 4G which I am sure will be corrected in an OTA update.
If I go to Settings-Wireless & Networks-More-Mobile Networks-Network Mode-CDMA/LTE and switch to CDMA only my bars come up and my dBm appears normal in settings.
I am pretty confident this is a LTE/3G handshake issue. Just like when you leave your home and you are still barely connected to wifi and the phone doesn't know what to use, so all of your apps fail trying to connect. I think it is just the same.
Anyway, I hope this helps others. It has made me less neurotic finding this out.
I had the rezound and returned it because of the headphone noise. Got the nexus and it gets terrible signal and speeds where the rezound was great. Called Verizon and they are sending me another Rezound and told me it shouldn't have the audio problems. We shall see. I just know that the nexus is unusable in my house due to reception.

I'm having similar issues, and made a thread about it about an hour ago. How long have you had your device for, and since when did problems begin to occur?
Im having the same problems, somehow my one x after the official jb update the wifi is disconnecting once in a while and has to reconnect.
On ICS my wifi was good, everywhere in my house even the yard i connected to my wifi, now 5 meters away from my router is disconnects unusually a lot. I only have constant signal when im next to my router.
Its not my router, im experiencing this at my friends and familys place too. very weak signal and dc a lot
Kyoraki, i had this problem since i bought it
send back to HTC, its HARDWARE FAULT.. and its a known issue...
