Just wondering before I do this, because, with my last phone (HTC vogue), I switched to verizon lines, and the service was fantastic, but I kept getting error messages about it trying to connect to data and the like, and, I don't want to put up with that nowadays. Overall, is this something you guys have done? What are your experiences with it? Any drawbacks?
Second question is, how do I USB tether now that I'm rooted? I can do it with WiFi enabled just by plugging the phone in, but, that's just the same as stealing net with a wireless card. I'm looking to correctly root using my phone's data connection. Could anyone point me in the right direction?
thanks for reading, and of course, any help is already appreciated.
www.tether.com , they have a beta version of a usb tether that works pretty good, as for the Verizon PRL i cant say haven't done that yet on the Evo.

Thank you. I went ahead and signed up for the beta... here's hoping it works!
Now, if anyone ould help with the Verizon prl question, that'd be amazing.
It works very well. I think there are links to the tether downloads at bbhybrids.net ... look in their android forum section. I posted them there some time ago, if they dont work pm me and ill send them to you when i get to a computer.

ok, so while best buy was activating my phone (which took a litle shy of 3 hours) , they updated the firmware or the software (whatever it is that was updating at the time). when i had a touch pro 2 i rellied heavily on xda-wifi program to provide internet to my laptop. am i screwed now that best buy updated my phone? how can i get my phone to provide wifi to my laptop? i am in the dark, and even tho i love the evo's speed it still does not compare to a laptop and what it can do. Please help. i feel like if i am in the dark ages without wifi hotspot.
Like the hero when it first came out, wifi tethering in it's classic form doesn't work yet. HOWEVER: Go enable your sprint hotspot app...I believe I heard that haven't locked it down yet so even though you're not paying for the service, it should work in a pinch.
I seen i lot of this going on at best buy while i was waiting in line. They didnt get to mine though.
hmm ill try it, im guessing using the sprint hotspot "free" until they fix it will be uncapped huh?
but now that they updated me, am i going to be able to root? i saw a few post that people were able to get wifitethering after root but it was kinda of tricky.
i, for one dont mind the sprint tv, navigation and other sprint stuff. i actually enjoy using them (i mean im paying for em right?). but i would like a program like xda-wifi (the one i had on my tp2) where all i had to do was run the cab and it installed the program.
is there anything out there now where i can use the wifitethering abilities of the phone while keeping my rom "LIKE" stock with all programs that came out the box?

when i go to sprint hotspot and check the sprint mobile hotspot it gives me "error code 67. Registration failure. your pcs vision username and/or password may be incorrect. please try again"
The (temporary) free hotspot only works on 4G.
ah, that would make sense...seeing as how im in boston and 4g not getting here till 4th quarter 2010...this is insane...what do i do now in order to provide my laptop with internet from my phone? if someone could help me with the root or something. but my phone is updated, can i even do it now?

I don't live in a 4G area. Last night I was able to tether my HERO, my iTouch (I know), my wife's PRE, and my laptop. But today, I get the "error code 67". Darn it!
You can root ur phone after the OTA if you go to http://unrevoked.com/m from your phone browser and download the .apk, then run it... seemed to work pretty good for me at least it appears I'm rooted now (I couldn't get wifi tether to work tho)
On a side note...anyone else use this method or know if this is safe and/or from a trusted source? I usually stick to XDA for mod stuff, I just happened to run across this, this morning someone on Twitter posted it
EDIT: I see the other thread, nvm

the only reason i would root is to get access to get access to wifi tether, otherwise i have no reason to root (im not into removing apps and stuff).
what other threat did you see that had to do with my issue?
the updates started the moment she activated my phone. saw the word 'firmware' and yelled "NO!", reached over her shoulder and hit cancel.
Hope so because my friend was testing my phone and when he gave it back it was doing the update. He told me there was an update available, but he made it seem like it was an update in the market place! Now qik force closes overtime I open it.

I had a Cliq XT while waiting for my G2(vision) to arrive.
In that time.. I rooted the Xt..which came withthe wireless tether apk built into it...
I go to tether it to my laptop and it works perfectly fine..
I use the same exact tether program for my G2 but i cannot get it to work..
The difference between the 2 ..
When i use the Cliq XT as soon as i start the wireless tether and link the 2 up The phone asks me for permission to allow the laptop to link..
With the G2... It does not do this. and I can not get it to work..
I get the laptop to recognize the g2.. it says connected.. but no data is transferred..
Can anyone help Please.
____________________ Thanks
Is your G2 rooted?
Yeah.. it is rooted..
i have the wireless tether ap i downloaded from google..
Just cant get it to transfer any data..
I just uploaded the "OTA" andit works that way.. I just dont want to pay 14.99 so i would rather have the app working instead of this..
It works for me. Maybe try uninstalling and redownloading?
Actually, you HAVE to use an older version of Wireless Tether. Do a search, it's been a topic.
How much older... I use the 2.02 i think it is..
Have u tried using it open and unsecured? I had the same issue and that was the only way I got the pc to recognize it as a wifi network and not pc-pc connection

I have it open....
I have hard reset the phone 3 times. trying to get it to work.. I have re rooted the phone. .and redownloaded the ap several times..
doesnt work..
but the cliq xt.. works perfectly fine.
yeah there were some problems with the latest releast of wireless tethering or whatever the name of the app off of googles code site is.
i have it installed and it did work with the password encryption and all of that enabled.
the version i have is:
2.0.5 pre11
Just wait. Once your G2 update comes thru (mine came 3 hours ago) it will give you wi-fi calling. That's totally useless but it also includes USB tethering and wireless hotspot capability. You can find these features under settings>> wireless settings>> tethering and hotspot. Enjoy; it's free "for now" to use.

i dont know who you were trying to address in ur post but ill put in my 2 cents...
just download 'visionary' app from the market to root. its very very simple. it roots the g2 on its own when ran.

I've searched the threads and I'm not sure if this question has been resolved or not, but is there any ROM or preferably a separate .apk that allows for 4G tethering to be fully supported through the Sprint HotSpot application; one that is not limited to 3G tethering such as the Sprint HotSpot app found in [ROM] Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471). I am aware that the Wireless tether for root users allows for 4G tethering, I just like the clean look of sprint interface a little bit better than this one. Also I've seem'd to have notice that some times the WirelessTether for Root users will go from 4G to 3G tether just as the Free Version of the Sprint HotSpot application, does anyone know what might be cause?
-Thanks!
you definitely have this in the wrong thread. Should be in the Q&A section my friend. But as far as your question goes, no. Just root your device and use the wireless tether app. Its soooo easy to use, just tap the screen and your done|

so the interface makes that big of a deal to you for the 5 seconds you have to look at it?
If the interface matters that much to you, then you should pony up the $30/month.
If 4G tethering is all that you care about, then you can go back to a 2.1 Eclair ROM and use the Sprint app for free. 3G tethering won't work though.
im also looking for the sprint hotspot app with working 4g. for some reason with wireless tether the 4G feels throttled
I actually have the issue where if I use Wireless Tether for Root Users my devices will just randomly stop being connected to it.
Sprint hotspot doesn't seem to have the same issue, so while in 3G only I can just use the Sprint app, but in 4G I end up using PDANet or something.

Just change the channel to 1 on WiFi Tether's settings & it'll never happen again.
WiFi Tether pre 13 is waaay better than the Sprint HotSpot app.

OK, not to hijack another thread but...apparently my search ability is TERRIBLE because I can't find the info I'm looking for and I'm SURE this has been asked a thousand times. I jsut got an Evo Shift. This is my first Droid device so please treat me as a total n00b. I'm coming over from a Palm Pre (HP Pre now).
I need to get instructions and links to be able to get my hotpot working without having to pay the extra $30 a month. Can anyone provide a total n00b that is pretty smart with good step by step instructions on how to do this? I NEED it to work on 3G and want it to work on 4G. Thanks in advance...

Wow, OK, first, this is the EVo forum, not the Evo SHift.
Second, I'm not going to tell you how to do it, because that's something you need to lean about on your own time. But all you need to do is root your phone, and download the Wireless Tether app. There are many ways to root, and all can be found in the Evo Shift subforum. I'm not sure if Unrevoked supports the Shift yet, but if it does, its the easiest method to root.
Just make sure you READ a LOT about rooting before you do it, as its easy to completely brick your phone. There are plenty of noob/faq guides for rooting on here and other sites.
Ever since the last time I installed a rooted ROM (stock Sense ICS edit: gingerbread), neither Wifi Tether nor Wireless Tether will work with my laptop. The apps launch and seem to run ok, but a few minutes after my laptop connects, it then disconnects! After that it wont connect anymore unless I close either tethering app and re-start them.
I have been using PDA Net, which is fine, but the free version won't connect to secure sites. Before I give up and pay for the full version, I thought I'd check and see if there are any other option available.
My requirements are:
Works with 4G
Works with secure sites.
I would prefer a wireless solution so I can use it with my (cough) iPad as well, but that would be a luxury.
I have not confirmed that my wireless issue is due to either app. Wifi Tether used to work with my previous ROM (also a stock Sprint rooted ROM). I flashed to an updated ROM because I could not get my Bluetooth working with the last one. Now Bluetooth works, but I've lost the ability to use Wireless tethering!
I'm kind of afraid to flash to a ROM with unlocked Sprint wireless tether because I don't want something else to break!
Wireless tether 2.0.7 works on pretty much anything. Does not work on evo 3d

Sorry, I meant Gingerbread.
I'm on 2.3 Android, and using Wireless tether 2.07, And she ain't working for me. That is why I'm looking for another tethering method.
Guess I'll just have to re-flash and take my chances with breaking bluetooth again. I wanted to avoid that cause when I was trying to fix my Bluetooth before, nobody here was able to help. I had to reflash then too.
This is like trying to"fix"Windows by reinstalling it. You're not really fixing anything.

I'll go ahead and link you to a thread will appropriately address this one. Please read through the entire thread.

Well, I'm more puzzled than ever now.
My question asks about the existence of wireless tethering apps OTHER than WiFi Tether and Wireless Tether, specifically apps that are not restricted to non secure sites.
I spent almost a full hour searching before I posted, but I did not mention that in my question as I did not think it was pertinent.
I had already looked at the sticky about wireless tethering, but that thread discusses wireless tethering SPEED issues - not my issue. Again, my issue is loosing the connection between my phone and client (originally my laptop, but since confirmed with my iPad) when using either of the two mentioned wireless apps.
As long as the tether stays connected, I have no problem with 4G speed. But I only remain connected for two or three minutes.
And the thread Concordium linked to seems to be about bashing the original poster of that thread, so no help there either. Unless I missed something.
Wireless tether for root connects to anysite you want I use it everyday on 2 devices works just fine connecting to anything I need

Thanks. I mentioned in my original post that both Wireless Tether and Wifi Tether are not working on my EVO.
Initially they do start and connect, but within 2 to 3 minutes they both stop tethering. I'm starting to wonder if some other app may be interfering.
Does anybody know for sure if my phone's WiFi should be running or not? Sometimes I get that "What the hell..." message.
I reread your original post and it looks like you answered your own question in your original post. It DID work until you flashed to another ROM. So common sense would suggest that it is some kind of issue with the ROM or the way it is setup. Perhaps you should take a look at that and use that in your query. If you don't want to flash something else then that's cool. But you're not going to fix your problem until you fool around with it.
Well, yes, but Like I said above, sometimes I get that "What the hell? Your phone takes over the WiFi..."
I don't know if you are familiar with that. It suggests to me that something is hijacking my WiFi radio.
Maybe I need to learn how to ask better questions.
So I have done days worth of searching and have not found a fix for what I am looking to for.
I have unlocked my LGOG LS970 in hops I would be able to use the blutooth tethering as Sprint has it on lock down. I was not to my surprise. My old Evo never had an issue after I rooted it. I have downloaded many many apps that say they enable the tether with no luck. I am trying to share my internet connection with my Parrot Asteroid. The only apps I have found require you to download the adjacent program to the device as well as the phone, so in this case I am not able to do that.
Is there a ROM or program that will allow me to share my internet connection with my deck via Bluetooth?
I tried the hotspot apps to for WiFi and it would not work either.
Thank you for any help.

And just do you know, give us a bit of information about your phone, but don't bloat the thread. Give us info, read through it, trim it up, post.

So I have an LG LS970 on Sprint.
I used this method to unlock and root the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050582
I am running the factory ROM, and have not upgraded to another as of yet, perhaps that is my issue. My Blue tooth tether worked for one day after I first rooted and then stopped. From reading around is that Sprint is a little tricky and you have to use a proxy to bounce your IP off of to get away from the extra charges. I can use bluetooth but not for data sharing.
I am now using a proxy server but still no luck on the tether.
I have some experience with Android but from a user standpoint. The only other phone I rooted was my Evo a few years ago and CyanogenMod made that effortless..
I hope this helps
