Curious Case of My 4G - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my EVO on launch day and promptly rooted it using Toast's Methods resulting in a fully nand unlocked rooted phone. Everything was just peachy until the incremental update came out. I was using a stock .6 ROM and when the update was launched I waited and used a Caulkin's 1.47 stock rooted ROM. I had never and did not at that point flash any radios/wimax updates.
Later that week, whitslack posted a radio/wimax update...I ran them both. The Wimax update took all of 20 seconds to write...it didn't seem like it did anything because of how quickly it wrote. I DID NOT live in a 4G area, so it was not possible for me to test.
I then started reading about how so many people's 4G was broke by different ways and became a little to addicted to the forums and it got to the point where my bar exam (life truly sucks) preparation started to suffer, so I ran the Sprint RUU and restored my phone to stock so it wouldn't serve as a distraction.
Once in stock I ran both OTAs and am now at stock, non-rooted 1.47. I still had no idea if my 4G worked or not.
When I open up my wimax_mtd everything is completely wrong...everything is broken, doesn't work...my DEV MAC says it is "%s". However, when I turned my 4G on my mac address under hardware information in settings matches the one on the back of my battery, even though it sits at scanning all day since there is no 4G service in my area.
So today I entered into 2 different 4G areas for the first time and my wimax connects fine and stays connected....
If everything is so screwed up on my wimax_mtd...why and how does my 4G still work? is wimax_mtd a root file that is still left on my phone?

Random Reboots...

Hey everyone, I looked around and didn't find anyone having my particular problem, but If I put this in the wrong place, or someone has already solved it, just let me know. Don't want to waste your time!
I got my DINC the day they came out in stores...the first one my local store sold in fact. It was working great, but I hated the bloatware and the fact that the Bluetooth stack was not up to date...couldn't connect with a new hands free speaker phone I just bought (Parrot mini-kit slim). I had occasional random reboots, but not too many. Once or twice a week maybe.
So when the unrevoked one-click came out I tried it. Worked great.
Then I started trying ROMs. With everything I've tried I get random reboots...a lot of them. Sometimes it reboots once and works fine for a couple hours. Other times, it will loop until I do a battery pull. When it loops it will sometimes make it all the way to the lock screen, sometimes it will only make it to the boot animation, and sometimes it won't get past the white HTC screen.
I've used a couple different nightly builds of CM6, with and without google apps. I've used Skyraider 1.8 and 1.9 with and without sense. I've tried "touch of photons". Same results and activity on all of them.
Last night I gave up and downgraded to unrooted 2.1 with sense...factory fresh. I reformatted my SD card with the phone, reformatted the phone storage, and I've done factory resets. It still isn't working right.
At this point, I'd be happy to get it back to pre-Unrevoked and just wait for the official OTA Froyo which is supposed to come out soon. Rooting and using a stable rom is fine with me too. I just need a phone that works consistently.
Any ideas? I'm pretty desperate.
sounds like you needed to return it and get a new one since it was doing random reboots from the day you bought it.
have you used any of the hydra kernels to try and OC it, the 1.15 OC would cause mine to reboot. a good stable rom that i tried was JagerRom, 1.7.4 is without sense, and chocolate is with sense. don't try the OTA one because that is for people who updated to the OTA leak and im going to assume you aren't one of thoes people. haha

hope this helps
Thanks Stroupified...
The weird thing is that the reboot issue wasn't that big of a deal before I rooted and started flashing roms. It happened, but not enough to be a problem.
Does the camera and camcorder work on Jager?
Does anyone know if there is something that could have gotten messed up with unrevoked or the roms I tried?
Is there another downgrade method I can use? I just installed the PB31IMG.zip you can find in a few places out there...is there a known reliable source for the downgrade zip?
If I can avoid fighting with Verizon on this I'd like to. I'm obviously outside my 30 days, and I don't want to wait a week or 2 or three or more for a new incredible (if I can convince them to get me one). I'm not even sure warranty or Asurion will do anything with this kind of a problem either...I fear I'm stuck with a $500 reboot roulette machine.
re
i have gone through 4 incredibles.
they all exhibited the same rebooting issues... completely stock with NO installed apps.
I have also tested the phones with 2 different batteries and with different sd cards and no sd cards installed.
I had done factory resets.
I get a ****ty cell connection where i live, -100 to -96 db.
Its looking more like a tower issue..
I also have had a reboot issue. I rooted the phone the day I got it and installed a senseless rom. It worked perfect the 1st day then started into a downward spiral of reboots till it went into a full boot loop. I did a nandroid back up of the original rom. No real issues since. Im still rooted and have only had one random reboot in about a week that I know of. I know the first issue was because of the rom but what causes the random reboots. Is it aloss of signal? Im a noob so Im just trying to get some insight.
Im on #2
I got my 2nd Incredible on Friday. Prior one would just get hotter and hotter (possibly due to signal issues) until it would enter a reboot loop. Hoping # 2 fares better.

ya everything works in jager. but from what everyone else is saying it seems like it could be the signal (or lack there of) that's causing the reboots. have you tried the hybrid prl? it uses the verizon and altell towers instead of just the verizon ones. i haven't tried it because im in cali and there aren't any altell towers near me, but if your stuck with the phone you might as well give it a shot if you live in the supported areas. good luck man.
Link to PRL thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723829
If you don't have problems with signal don't bother with the hybrid prl... it kills your data speeds because it switches you from Verizon data network to Sprints data in most areas. I know in the Carolinas phones randomly reboot a lot because thats Alltel country and phones don't work properly without the hybrid. But down south its mostly Verizon. Out west Texas/Ok is mostly Alltel.
But man honestly - I have the same issue on custom roms. My stock Sense rom does fine though. Sometimes I'll be on a custom rom typing a text and the keyboard just freezes and its over. lol nandroid time to me - I can't take the reboots but hate not having the features of newer software.
re
i have tried the hybrid prl and it did not help my rebooting issues.
i have also tried switching to the the cdma codec to -b the higher quality compression... with no luck in fixing the reboots.
I have also made sure there was not an issue with an app causing it, i have tested mine with a clean / factory reset with absolutely no apps installed.
I have had 100% good luck with the leaked ota update, the one upped the camera to 720p recording as well as a hand full of other fixes, and not once did my incredible reboot or crash.
I'm pretty confident that htc has fixed this issue for me, once they drop the 2.2 update that everybody seems to be speculating will be released in a handful of weeks.
Thanks for the input everyone, and I'm sorry others are having the same problem.
I went by my local Verizon store (actual Verizon store, not a 3rd part dealer) and told them my phone was rebooting repeatedly. They didn't even touch my phone...I was out of there in 5 minutes with a FedEx 2nd Day Air confirmation number for a new handset. And my wallet is intact also. I'm rarely impressed by Verizon's customer service, but this time...man... Between the new handset and the impending 2.2 update, I hope to be in good shape.

Same EXACT thing happened with me and telesales. No scripts, no hard reset, no task killer; NOTHING. Said "my phone gets hot and reboots" and they said (last Thurs), let's get you a replacement overnight so you can try the new one out of the weekend. No muss, no fuss. Got here 10:30AM the next day, and my evil super-heating 4-to-13-reboot-try prone phone is going back.

I don't believe towers/signal would have any effect on shutting down or booting. Basically once you're on a current PRL, you really shouldn't even have to update it. Unless you're having that poor service deal where an Alltell/Vzw hybrid would benefit you.

Unrevoked Forever + Netarchy Froyo 2.2 = no 4G?

About a month ago, I wrote up a detailed tutorial for how to use Unrevoked Forever and install Netarchy's HTC OTA Froyo 2.2 build (along with radio updates) on a rooted (with Unrevoked) Evo:
quinndombrowski.com/blog/2010/08/16/from-rooted-evo-4g-to-unrevoked-forever-froyo/
Because my 4G coverage is hit-or-miss, it took me a week or so to notice I no longer was able to connect to 4G. From a comment on the tutorial, it sounds like I'm not the only one having trouble.
I haven't seen anything in the Netarchy Froyo thread about people losing 4G, and I figure I would've seen it if Unrevoked Forever caused it. I'm assuming I did something wrong along the way. For what it's worth, my 4G MAC address looks normal.
If anyone could read through what I did and let me know where I went wrong, I (and at least one person who's done the same) would really, really appreciate it.
Thanks!
I have the exact same rom, and have had it for about a month now, and still have my 4g coverage.

Mine is working fine now. Why don't you try to reflash with the latest WiMax radio. You can find it here on the forum somewhere. I had an issue on my 4G before that while I was looking at my 4G widget, it kept turning off, then turning on....all by itself, every 30 seconds or so...so I reflashed my WiMax and that seemed to solve the problem. Just my two cents.

That worked perfectly-- thanks a ton, cyberenz! I'll update the tutorial accordingly.

[Q] Very inconsistent 4G

I have a rooted evo with S-off. I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 to root my device and did not have any problems. I live in a 4G coverage area but my 4 G in very inconsistent but if I turn on 4 G antenna, update profile it will connect. My RSA keys are intact and my MAC address matches what I pulled up on ADB. I have been reading through post for 2.5 days as not to ask the same question twice. My wimax radio is 24722. Which I see is an older one but from what I gather updating this radio could ruin wimax completely. I hope I have provided enough info. Thanks to all the dev and ROM creaters!!! I was a ROM flashing fool with my HERO and I want my EVO to be the same experience!!!
Thanks in advance

If you flash a new radio yes it could ruin it. Big risk that way, if you update through you phone or ota it won't ruin it
sent from my EVO at the edge of hell
Today I'm in a really good 4g area and others with eve's have 4g but I get it for a few minutes if I update profile.
thanks

There is nothing wrong with the phone my friend i have been investigating this as well i need to do more tests but it seems once you flash a custom ROM your 4G is no longer as strong as it was from the factory. It wont matter if you flash a new radio, PRI or PRL, You can take a 100% virgin Evo and one that has been flashed over with the exact same RADIO PRI and PRL and you will notice a difference in the 4G Signal the stock phone will of course get a stronger signal. i have not tested this on a stock phone with just root access so im not 100% if this problem is Root related or Rom related but there is a difference.

Whenever I was running a sense based rom I never had a problem with my 4g. Not to say that what your saying might not be true I'm just saying that I personally had no problem with 4g.

I’m currently running a sense based Rom with all the same radios as the next guy I can literally put our phones side by side and his will pick up 4G where mine gets 3 bars of crappy 3G my friend down the hall same issue as me he’s running Baked snack I’m running Myns the other guy is stock we all got our phones at the same time so hardware is the same. I’m not *****ing just curious what’s causing the issue...

[Q] Mystery issue with 3g and phone service

A friend of mine has an Evo 4g running Fresh ROM. I have one as well but run anything from Sense ROMs to currently running MIUI. I have generally never had problems getting phone or 3g service while at work. He, on the other hand, goes days if not weeks with absolutely NO 3g or phone service while at work. The only thing that will work is 4g. We sit right next to each other so it isn't some office/structural interference. If he drives 2 miles away from the building everything starts working again. He says he doesn't have this problem ANYWHERE else.
That said, about a month ago he tried switching to stock, rooted which still wasn't working. He nandroided back to Fresh (the nandroid was made when the phone wasn't working) and miraculously everything started working fine. He was fine for about a month before he started having the problem again. He updated to the latest radios with no luck. He flashed the stock rooted rom again and tried updating PRL and profile but got errors that they couldn't be updated (maybe because he wasn't able to connect to 3g/phone?). Since none of that was working he went back to a nandroid he made the night before when his phone wasn't working. Again, everything started working just fine again.
There are 4 people in our office with Sprint (Samsung Galaxy, Evo Shift, Evo 4g) and no one else has problems like this.
Any suggestions on what could be causing this? Since the PRL and profile aren't changing between when the phone doesn't work and when the nandroid seems to restore function I am at a total loss.
EDIT: One last thing: He made both nandroids while at home where his phone works fine and restored those backups while at work. But that shouldn't make a difference, right?
Had he had any repairs done to it... My wife's phone had a data cable replaced and the technician accidentally put the antenna for the radio under the board she put back on...giving her almost no signal to speak of.... Had them open it up and fix it, and now her phone runs as good as ever.

No repairs. The really weird thing is he was running the same setup he had backed up hours earlier and the phone didn't work. All he really did was wipe and restore the nandroid and everything started working again. I was in the office with him and saw the whole process. He has done this twice with the exact same result. 48 hrs since the last time he did it and his phone/3g still work. I just don't get it.

Using someone else's RSA cert? (WiMAX)

Hey all,
I've been a long time user of Cyanogenmod and custom ROMs in general - usually just for the purpose of removing bloatware. I don't consider myself a newbie by any means, but of course, sometimes I get ahead of myself. Recently, I upgraded from my CM9 Optimus S to CM7 HTC Evo 4g. I've never been interested in 4g myself, as I'm usually always at home, at a friend's, or at work where I always have WiFi.
During a test run of CM9 on the Evo, my RSA certificate for the WiMAX became corrupt and thus, I'm not able to use my 4g. Since then, I've reverted back to CM7 (no FFC killed me), and noticed that my 4g was stuck in an 'On - Searching' mode, which just slaughtered my poor battery (4ish hours, in pocket tops). I searched high and low, but of course, my backups from recovery don't contain the wimax.img required to restore the partition and thus have lost my keys forever. Sad times, considering I just got the phone a week ago. =[
For what I've been reading, its assumed that RSA certs are device unique and that chances are, flashing another person's wimax.img wouldn't even work. Due to my desperation to at least get the 4g radio turned off, I found a wimax.img from a friend's Evo that I rooted/flashed for him about a year ago. I flash_image'd it to the wimax partition, no modification of the MAC, certs, or anything within the .img, and next thing I see is the 4g connect instantly, and here's the kicker, with full internet access.
So here's my questions -- This friend always has his 4g on, literally 24/7. Since he was most likely connected at the same time I was able to, does this mean that both of us theoretically can use 4g at the same time using the same wimax image?
Secondly, and more importantly -- I know the companies hate to hear about people jailbreaking/rooting their phones so I'd hate to call Sprint, but could using his radio image, even just to be able to turn mine off, cause any known issues within our contracts? I suppose since the radio is now off and its persistent through reboots, I could wipe the /wimax partition, but if it should ever get turned on again, I would just be right back where I'm at now.
