Is there an easy and i mean EASY way to tether by USB my phone to a Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) box?
I am currently rubbing Ubuntu 10.04 in Virtual Box and would like to run it as my main OS. Only thing stopping me is USB Tether. Currently use Easy Tether on Windows 7. I want something that easy. Plug and away you go sort of thing.
Thanks in advance for suggestions/help.

It works fine without any screwing around or issues. I run Ubuntu 10.04 and it connects strait away when I select Share Internet Connection.
Yeah so I hear. I was using Ubuntu 8.04 but that does not do it automatically. Doesn't matter now as my motherboard has died. Sucks :-(

Has anyone got it working?
It works out-of-box on my Ubuntu, but it doesn't work at all on Mac OS 10.6.
I read somewhere that Mac doesn't have "usb ethernet" driver, so I googled one out and installed it (Zaurus driver), but no luck.
Forgot to mention - I don't want to use PDAnet or other 3rd party solution.
Would be perfect to just get a working USB ethernet driver for Mac OS.
I'd also be interested in this.
I currently use PDA net but it's not perfect. I've spent hours trying to work out how to get it going but with no luck.
Still no go. Found g_ether drivers, but they are for 10.5 only.
I'm quite disappointed with mac at this point
The good news is Froyo will have internet sharing through wifi, which should let us, mac users, fully enjoy tethering without rooting
i have ubuntu running on my phone and i cant connect it to the office network.
is there a way to ssh into it through usb/adb, id like to do some X forwarding. or at least have a proper terminal to get my work done.
thanks
Hey did you ever find an answer to this?
I'm thinking wired tether (or wireless for that matter)

yes wireless tether works great for me. i even run a vnc client and connect to it over wireless tether.
So quick set up of my situation
AMOLED DInc
CM7 Protekk build 12
Chad's 3/6/11 Kernel
.7.28 Radio
CWM 3.0.0.8
Windows 7 Professional
So this has been an issue since around official nightly #38
My laptop does not like to consistently hold wifi in certain campus building so I rely on my phone occasionally. However, I also don't always have the best service in these brick buildings. I have tried to use USB tether but to no avail. This is what happens:
Connect USB cable to Dinc
USB storage screen pops up, I tap home to go back to launcherpro
Go to settings
Wireless and Networks->USB and wifi hotspot
Tap to enable USB tethering
It will then flicker the status below the USB tethering option, then uncheck the box and I get the USB mass storage screen again. I used the HTC installer to install the RNDIS drivers.
Can anyone see an issue with my set up? I think Chad left in USB tethering but I could be wrong.
From what ive gathered it just doesnt work for windows 7. Download easy tether and that works fine.
I'm not sure this is related to Windows 7. If it is, correct me, but I don't think so. I've tried both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows 7.
I'm having the same issue. Wifi tether works fine, but I want USB tether so I don't kill my battery all the time. I have the same issues as original poster.
Yep having same problem and i have easy tether but it has a 300ms lag compared to wireless tethering that has 103ms and when i used to do wired tethering when i had xp it would be even better like 89ms and i would share it with my ps3 and it would be pretty good for online since i have sattalite internet here and thats usually 1700ms which is just terrible... yep. i want to get rid of 20ms to get the optimal online experience O.O, ive tried everything active sync(incompatible) htc sync, windows mobile center, none of those gave me the generic rndis driver >.< im about ready to just go get the alpha of Ubuntu and just do it on there.
not the 10.10 Ubuntu cause it doesn't support my graphics card (atleast not an open source version which is all i use.) sorry im off topic...
So any more ideas on how to get the drivers? My friend uses Ubuntu and the native rndis tethering is faster than easy tether when I use his.

man!!! i have the same issue the only usb tethering that actually work for me was the one with htc sence :/
is there a app for android that i can use to access files on my pc - pictures and video for example, through wifi or the data plan on the phone, and if so, can it be done while pc is turned off? (i.e. when im at work can i then acess files on the pc?)
Thanks
If you set up Dropbox correctly then yes. Otherwise you'd need your PC on to access it remotely.
if you turn your pc off then drop box is your best bet. if you leave it then you can install an ftp or vnc server on the pc and use an ftp or vnc client on the phone. i use ftp to transfer thing top my phone from pc over wifi a lot. android vnc is good
Download from market teamviewer ,for me is the best choice.
I use ConnectBot to connect to my desktop at home; course, the computer has to be turned on first but that's easy too - wake-on-lan on the computer, activated through the home router admin page.
This is fine for geeky Linux connections as it's over SSH...

Hiya,
Ubuntu Forums
That's the instructions I followed to enable WoL for my computer; I've got a Draytek router at home and this has a WoL feature that can send the relevant packets to the computer inside the network.
Draytek Router FAQ
However, if you don't have this function on your router, you could always use an app on your phone to do it:
Wol Wake on Lan Wan (Android Market)
...course, you might need to configure your router to forward on the relevant port for this to work...
I recently got native USB and Wifi tethering working on my S3, and it works great on Windows 7 both ways. I have Ubuntu 12.04 desktop installed on my laptop on a separate partition. I've been booting to it and playing around just to try and learn it here and there. How would I go about getting my S3 connected to it to provide USB tethering for internet? Wifi tethering worked no problem, but I like USB tethering better.
