Can I root or Not? - Desire General

Hi Guys, I am keen to root device, but im not sure if I can and which method to use.
Here are my specs
HBOOT-0.80.0000
Radio-4.06.00.02_2
Kernel: 2.6.29-b7e82785
Build : 1.19.832.2
Baseband Version: 32.36.00.28u_4.06.00.02_2
I have read that I must have a specific radio to root, but I can't seen mine listed anywhere.
I know on WINmo devices, you have to flash the Radio seperately for many roms, and they must match the rom version, other you get serious issue.
I am keen to try [ROM-FroYo] Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM (16/07 v1.0c | OpenDesire Team)
Can someone please confirm if they have do this before? Or what steps I should follow? I have spent hours reading the tuts and can't find a definate answer.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah you can root it.
Have a look here :
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/
Do whats told in that post and then you will have root.
Once that is done you look at :
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...unching-recovery-on-your-device-without-a-pc/
And then your set to go, no need to use a computer to flash your phone.
And you download the rom and the Radio for [ROM-FroYo] Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM (16/07 v1.0c | OpenDesire Team)
Flash the rom first then the radio ( Unsure if that really maters that's the way i did it at least )
Sorry for not posting a step to step guide.
But if you read the first post in those 2 links over you should have what you need. If not then post back here in i will help you.

OR instead of all that hassle you can use unrevoked and get your phone auto rooted in 30 seconds..
then install the radio and rom you like..

Did you uninstall HTC Sync?
If you don't uninstall it, then it will keep sitting on "Pushing Recovery"
and what OS you have ?

Unrevoked will root your phone, and flash ClockworkMod recovery, allowing easy access to flashing new ROMs, etc.
The easiest way to use Unrevoked is to use a Linux or Mac PC (Or linux Live CD) - they don't suffer from the driver issues Windows does.
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...sh-a-permanent-recovery-image-with-unrevoked/
And use the Linux instructions. All it requires is a writable CD and a few minutes of your time.
Once you have Clockwork Mod installed, flashing a new Radio image is easy, boot into HBOOT (Volume Down + Power), then select "RECOVERY" using the volume keys for up/down and Power to select. This will put you in Clockwork Mod. Once there, you can use the "flash zip" option, and select the zip from your SD card. This works for radio images too.
Hope that helps!

Just follow this: http://rootmydroid.co.uk/guides/desire/howto-root-your-htc-desire/
Very straightforward and easy guide. If you follow it carefully you wont have any problems in rooting your phone.
Once you are done with root, follow the steps written by TickyDraconia to flash a custom ROM

[Q] Can I root without Unrevoked? How?

I can't root. Unrevoked3 seems like a piece of ****. Just doesn't work at all, tried 3 machines and two operating systems with it and it just doesn't work at all. It says to go to hboot USB but it just boots into the OS rather than in to bootloader... I've tried it at least 28 times. So screw that--
So, how do I root without it?? The specs on the Evo:
Came out of the box with 2.2
Baseband version: 2.15.00.09.01
Kernel version: 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e [email protected] #11

Also tried OS X. No go.

When you do this it will create a folder on your sdcard with the 5 files in it. take the files out of the folder and copy them to the root of the sdcard and delete the empty folder. that is the only thing that this process didnt make perfectly clear. other than that everything works fine.

Anyway, I got it all almost working!! Sheesh that took forever. Now. I flashed a recovery using the technique on geekfor.me, or so I thought, when I rebooted in to recovery the next time i needed it it was the image of the phone and a red exclamation point...

[SOLVED] Semi Bricked HTC Desire - Need help

Hello guys, I have a major problem on my HTC Desire. Most of it is my fault but please try to help out here and not judge me... :/
I use Miuimod. I had the 1.8.1 version and I went to install 2.1. The thing is that (for the first time!!!) I didn't check the last page of thread to find out that Miuimod 2.1 for Desire a major bug that forces an endless reboot.
And that's not all... Don't ask me why but.. I didn't make a NANDroid backup... :/ I was in a hurry and I didn't check the button from ROM Manager menu.
Also for a reason, I cannot boot into ClockworkMod Recovery. I only have hboot. Hboot lets you install a ROM only with the name update.zip. But even though I have renamed the last OpenDesire ROM as update.zip, it won't install it cause it doesn't have the proper signature.
So I'm kinda stuck with a semi bricked HTC Desire. Any suggestions?
(And just for the record, yeah, lesson learned... )
Are you s-off? If so, just flash a new recovery image through fastboot.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Wrong forum, Q/A should be right...
Try flashing clockwork over fastboot:
"fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.img"
Put your SD in your computer and copy a ROM.zip on it, than flash as usual ?
Why why why??
What have you learnt from this mistake? Yes, ALWAYS install a custom recovery. Saves you this kind of trouble.
Okay I'm of no help, but I just wanted to tell.
@markuz85 No I'm s-on. In order to change to s-off I need to boot into device (right?).
@westernmg I'm trying to but adb shows no devices and I'm kinda stuck there.
Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance...
Try to pull out the battery and wait a few seconds then power on the phone again and press power+vol- and select recovery. If this don't work try to reflash an official htc desire rom renamed in update.zip from hboot.
Thanks for the answer. Can't find an official rom though. Can you point me at one?
@9600pro87 I did what you said but still nothing...

Good that you solved the issue. But just so you know, that method of rooting is outdated. Rooting does not need downgrading, as of current hboots

Windows users are seriously incapable of using a one-line command to flash recovery..? They'd really rather go through RUU + rageagainstthecage/Unrevoked, just to install root the "easy way" and have a GUI..? You don't deserve S-OFF.

[Q] HTC Desire Rooting Problems,

Hi,
Firstly my stock rom is:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_H3G_UK_2.25.771.1_Radio_32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14_release_149217_signed.exe
locked to 3 in the UK
I tried to Root my phone yesterday using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
After completing step 3 rooting phone using unrevoked everything seemed fine but when i tried step 4: S-Off Procedure With Alpharev
it tells me my device is undetectable or doesnt exist. And in the recovery menu of the phone it tells me that misc and cache could not be found or mounted.
I tried to reflash the stock RUU but when i click next it tells me the battery is below 30% (its 100%) and wont let me flash. I did enable install from unkown sources and enabled USB Debugging.
Does anyone know what my next step is cause my goal is to unroot my phone and install a rom like Redux.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
I had trouble at that stage too, it just took my PC a few attempts to connect.
It might be worth just giving it a few more goes.
I also found it useful to install AmonRas recovery as a custom recovery with the unrevoked tool, and to also not install the recovery in alpharev.
Have you tried wiping the battery userdata in recovery before running the RUU?
Thank you so much, AmonRas recovery showed no dam errors like clockwork did, im about to attempt to s-off it now, il update this in a while about how it goes.
Hopefully it should be smooth sailing from here.
Thanks!
I found that alpharev refused to recognise my device while I remained on stock sense rom after rooting. Only when I flashed custom rom if choice (oxygen at the time) did it work.
You have to avoid roms using data2sd etc though, instructions at http://www.alpharev.com

Confused the heck out of me, I thought alpharev were getting sponsored advertising or something.
So OP are things working? Which ROM did you decide on?

[Q] help rooting! puhhhllleeeeaaassseeeee

ROK here's the story. I rooted my DINC when I first got it two years ago, well my girlfriend now wants hers rooted.
I read the wiki and all that. But everytime I try it gives me an error message after the first phone boot after trying to gain root access... error can't root is your firmware too new?
Now my steps are.
Plug phone in.
Install phone drivers. (I think this may be where i went wrong)
run unrevoked3
It does its stuff and reboots phone into hboot continues to do it's thing.
Reboots phone again.
Starts asking fir root.
Then I get the error.
Can you tell what I'm doing wrong?
Do I have to install the hboot drivers on my windows 7 machine when the phone is in hboot?
Help!
Ok first,I don't believe unrevoked supports the newest firmware update, but there are other methods...
second, if unrevoked completes successfully, try manually flashing the recovery, if that completes successfully, then make a backup and flash a new rom..
If it boots up however, try downloading superuser and install it, if it works, should be good to go

Are you s-off? If so flash cwm recovery thru hboot as a PB31IMG.zip. http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip. Then if you can access recovery use it to flash the su binary, installing the su app does not install the binary. You can go to preferencec in the su app and try installing it from there, but it usually fails. You can get the lates flashable one here. http://dinc.does-it.net/SuperUser/SuperUser_3.0.7.zip

No. When I launch rom manager it says I need root. I'm not s-off.
My question is.. when I install the windows hboot drivers... does the phone need to be in hboot? I installed the hboot drivers when the phone was plugged in USB bur the phone was loaded into android 2.2

Root and s-off are two different things, and you dont need rom manager to access recovery. However if your s-on you dont have a custom recovery to flash things in anyways.
Yes when you install the drivers you need to be in hboot to get the correct drivers.
If you ran unrevoked and it compleeted successfully you should have root and s-off. I would make sure the drivers are right, and then run unrevoked again.

OK. Unrevoked always failed. So. Must be the hboot drivers installing incorrectly.

So when I install the hboot drivers while the phone is in hboot... do I run unrevoked when thephone is still in hboot? Or do I restart the phone?

Is there any way to get "s-off" on a device running 2.3.4? I have looked all over and tried all of the methods I have found. Is it possible to unlock & root this device or is it stuck running the stock setup?
Andriod 2.3.4
Baseband 2.15.10.07.07
