Why I'm not rooting my desire (for now) - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Like thousands of others I'm pressing the check for update everyday on my htc desire waiting for Froyo.
And then over the past few weeks I've read many guides to rooting. I've downloaded and burned a CD of the Tiny Linux tool for rooting (boot loader .80). I've downloaded Unrevoked 3 and I've downloaded one of the latest froyo ROMs with Sense (plus downloaded radio).
I'm ready to root!
I'm a developer by trade (mainly visual studio C++ at work boo! Eclipse android at home whahey!). I replaced the firmware on my Buffalo NAS with Debian about 18 months ago - which has been one of the most worthwhile home projects I've ever done : providing me with an internet facing subversion server at 20 watts. Developer waffle.
So if I've had such a good modder experience before why aren't I rooting at the moment?
Well the odd cry for help from people who may have bricked their phone does cast a bit of a shadow. My NAS was out of warranty and not part of a £35/month contract and it didn't go smoothly at first. But I believe it would all go okay!!! It sounds much more straight forward.
I've decided to wait this time around because:-
- My phone is unbranded so I should get the update as soon as HTC release it. If it was branded (especially on Orange as my last phone was) I'd be unbranding it quick as a flash. Imagine waiting for Orange to get round to caking their rubbish over the top.
- I think (not sure) that in order for Sense to be part of the current Froyo roms now appearing for the Desire - is sense/froyo leaking out of the htc beta program and so these roms will always be slightly behind the latest build in htc as far as core bug fixes go? If i'm wrong - apologies. I suspect that, although the person who posts the rom may add many worthwhile things to the rom, the version of froyo that htc is working on will, meanwhile, be having core bugs fixed.
- I'm writing my first Android app and I should be concentrating on finishing that while I'm waiting for Froyo rather than getting into rooting/roming.
- I think I will root next time around. They say that a lot of the htc phones that came out this year won't get Gingerbread next year. So I'll probably root then (closer to the end of this contract as well) and get some hybrid Gingerbread.
I'm planning on waiting until the end of August. I may just say sod it and root tomorrow.
One reason why I may regret not rooting now is that I think htc might update the security on the phone when I get the OTA froyo. This might break all current rooting methods. It might even make it impossible to root it after that date.
As an aside, I've just read an article in this month's Linux User and Developer on the BeagleBoard and it sounds like I could make an Android phone from scratch - Walter Mitty I know!

I am also not rooting my desire for now just because the quality of apps these days has replaced my needs for rooting, I originally rooted for themes and customization, I'd like to take a screen shot but I can live without it.
I'd like to root but can't be bothered now as android and phone development has come along way since the old g1.
And I doubt htc will secure the the phone to a point where it will not be flashable htc seem to get android and the way its progressing look at what they asked cyan0gen to do, Motorola doesn't imop.

Jumped Ship, Couldn't be Happier

Hello guys first post, just popping in to say hi and ask a few questions.
So i purchased an iPhone 4 on launch day (pre ordered) loved it when it came was thinking great better battery life nice sweet iOS with multitasking etc.
However to my dismay battery life can only be described as shocking, with no apps running in standby it would go down by around 10% an hour. Then i would get crashes whilst quiting apps. Then the final nail came for the apple shaped coffin during an iOS update (which literally just changed the shape of the signals bars near enough) my phone got stuck in recovery mode so i got it repaired and now am getting it refunded.
During this period I though that little green android fella is looking rather attractive so i popped down to my local O2 shop and bought a Desire for £330 on Pay as You Go (my contract sim is being used with it though).
And you know what I couldn't be happier the battery life so far is on par even though i've only had it a few days. The customisation is great, the screen isnt as clear but to be honest i don't spend my day with my nose touching the glass looking for seperate pixels. Oh and to be honest little rain drops and the windscreen wiper coming across the screen when it's raining is worth the phone's price alone.
Only one question is there any way to get the phone to wake up by using say the track pad button instead of the Power button?
So yeah hope I enjoy my stay here and hopefully learn a lot from you guys and hopefully help others.
Regards Wingzer.
P.S they should have a little android toy as a smiley
Hello matey and welcome. Ive had a few phones myself with o2, palm pre, iphone, winmo, blackberry, symbian and so far android is by far the best in terms of what you can do and how it looks (although webos is pretty sweet in the slickness factor)
anyway the desire is a cracking phone but to wake it on the trackpad your going to have to root it. This is probably the best place to be looking if your going to root (look in the development section) or pop over to modaco.
Personally I rooted, I wasnt going to but the lack of app storage space pushed me to it and although I tried to stick around the sense roms ive now moved over to stock android and its much better for me but you do lose that fancy weather animation (which i do miss)
There is an app on marketplace that will wake up the phone via the pad. Forget its name though.

Thanks lads, I was thinking of rooting but the i've seen the instructions looks like it'll take forever.
UnrEVOked makes it really easy to root your desire. It's easiest on OS X or Linux. With Windows you have to uninstall HTC Sync (that's if you've installed it already), install a driver, then reinstall HTC Sync.
There's a Windows guide here (assuming that's what you use) - http://myhtcdesire.com/modding/how-to-root-your-desire-easily-method-2

Thanks a lot man definitley gonna go this and yeah i'm a windows user studied IT at college so bit of a passion.
Giving it a go but trying to do the drivers stage and my PC just isn't displaying the device in device manager what so ever.
Haha, welcome, I loved your post!
I made the move from a 3GS because I was highly disappointed in iOS 4 and the fact it still looks exactly the same since the first version in 2007 with no cusomisation at all, oh no wait, you can now change the wallpaper, yay! Not to mention very unhappy with Apple's handling of this entire antennagate nonsense...
Couldn't be happier on Android...

Just tried it but flashed to a Nexus One rom so no sense UI didn't really like it so unrooted will just wait for the update
Rooting using Unrevoked was as painless as it gets. Just read those instructions very carefully and you'll be done in 5 minutes. I've been on the fence for a long time (to root or not to root until this latest method came out because I wanted to be able to backup everything BEFORE installing a custom ROM).
As for the trackpad wake-up check my signature for a rock-solid ROM that includes everything you need.

Ah right and yeah might just give that ROM a little go.
Just go with a sense rom. There is plenty. Here are the one's i have liked if you decide to try again:
For android 2.1: mcr r3.1
Download: android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/307881/27-may-r3-1-modaco-custom-rom-for-htc-desire-with-online-kitchen/
For android 2.2(many improvements): Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM (not quite official though)
Download: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726300
I Personally use the 2.2 one and it is really as smooth as official, and everything is just fine. Also have oldstyle a2sd, which i prefer. But to solve the actual problem, here is the link to the wake on trackpad(and other buttons) mod
Download: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696907
Sorry for not making links clickable, but im not promoted to be able to do that.

[Q] Rooting by downgrading from HBOOT 0.92 and advice on custom ROM

Hello
I'm a new member here, altho I've been following a few threads for the latest weeks. Now curiosity has killed the cat....
I'm planing on using the recently uncovered method of downgrading from HBOOT 0.92 to 0.80 (or is it .82?) and apply unrevoked3 to gain root on My Desire as explained in the HOWTO. Phone's unbranded and unlocked, so I don't expect any problems to occur there other than to wipe my phone clean. I've been reading enough to feel reasonably confident in these steps.
But then there is the question of what ROM to put on My Desire when I'm done. I'm totally blank here. I've been looking at the descriptions and threads of a few ROMs in the dev-forum, but I can't say it makes me much smarter, except for a couple of ROMs that definitely isn't for me.
I've been quite happy about the HTC Sense that the phone was shipped with since I bought it back in April. Not much different about the new one that came with the Froyo OTA I updated to last weekend. What annoys me the most is the glitch in the Market that was introduced, and that there seems to be doubles of apps in the ROM, like both android and HTC versions of Facebook and others. Waste of space and waste of resources to have both fire up at boot. Same with a few stock installed apps that start at boot that I never use. Useless
Also I'd like to have that annoying boot sound gone, or maybe replaced by some custom stuff.
I also need the Froyo. The Wi-Fi hotspot and increased performance are must-have. App2sd too, but it looks like most ROMs have some implementation of this that at least matches the functionality of the one included in Froyo.
It's not that I am locked up to be a Sense-user, I just haven't tried anything else and don't know better. Love those 7 screens, altho I use only 6 of them. Also I've grown accustomed to a few of the HTC widgets. Eats a lot of screen real-estate, but looks good imo. Haven't looked up many screenshots of optional screens, so I have really no clue what the options are.
Is it obvious that I should apply a modified/rooted HTC-Sense Froyo ROM, or are there others that would match my needs better? I'm an old Linux user, so I'm not afraid to test new UIs. I'd love to hear from you experienced users what you have to recommend an Android-noob.
I suggest using this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
Its the official HTC rooted without hboot 0.92, if you don't like any great modifications, I suggest using this mod.
If you want an other mod, take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Desire#Unofficial_ROMs
Thanks or the reply. That first one is what I had in mind, but it feels "wrong" to stick with stock when I've finally bothered to crack open the phone
Maybe I should look into just how much work it is to swap ROMs and test out a couple for a few days each? Or is there someone who have written up a nice little review listing some of the most important differences between the modified ROMs?
I decided to go for a LeeDroid ROM. Been playing with it for a few hours, and it seems to do the job well
One happy rooted HTC customer
Try Neophyte 1.6 - much better mate Totally stable and has no issues that other custom roms do
Neophyte looks like a good alternative. Thank you
Also looks from the thread on that one that there is a new version coming one of the first days, so I'll stick with LeeDroid untill then. Looks to be a breeze to swap ROMs as long as you don't bother to install every unusefull app for each swap. And a nice way to clean out the phone of various useless stuff LOL

[Q] Desire rooting problems - Anyone had a similar experience??

Hi guys and gals
My mate got his HTC Desire about 4 days ago, he wasted no time in trying to root it but seems to have fu**ed up. According to his own words:
"I did the unlocker method (made the gold card), got into the boot loader but upon loading the custom and reboot I lost the screen. phone still works but no display, I am still trying various recoveries"
Has anyone had (or know of) any similar experiences? I been thinking about rooting my Desire but now I'm worried...not had mine long either.
Thanks!

sounds like your mate has an slcd screen and tried to downgrade his device too an incompatible hboot (f it doesn't mention amoled on the box you have slcd). this is completely recoverable. although a little tricky - see:

Cheers!
Thanks debully,
Will pass on your comments to my mate.
I must say tho, his experience has sort of freaked me out a bit. I am looking to root my Desire (I wanna be able to connect with a Wii controller) but am feeling a bit aprehensive now...
Go for it man.. I just bought my telus desire last tuesday and by the end of thursday I had rooted and flashed LeeDroid to it.. and havent looked back since. While some of the instructions may seem complicated, once you actually do it, it's really quite easy. I originally used unrevoked without the SLCD support, and it still works, just shows a black screen when doing the updates. Earlier today I re-flashed unrevoked with the SLCD support and switched to Cyanogen 6 RC2, and it was a walk in the park! The advanages of the custom ROMS (and 2.2) far outweigh the chance of a scare. And if you still feel aprahensible about it, just check out the howardforums.com telus HSPA forums, there is a post with a REALLY easy walkthrough, and several success stories for our specific model of the phone.
Thanks mikeandjaimie
i'm gonna go ahead and be a lazy bas**rd, could you please provide a link to this forum u speak of?
Thanks!
try to avoid over the air upgrades to froyo as this throws a nasty spanner in the works should you wish to get root afterwards. Lots of screen presses on a blank screen - not for the faint hearted. Stick with 2.1 and its quite a bit easier to root, then upgrade to froyo via a custom rom.
I only know this because I did an OTA update within minutes of getting out of the box, only to find that this has practically ruined my chances of rooting my device, for the time being at least, until some bright bugger finds a reasonable way round it.

I hear you mate. I updated my Android OS to Froyo 2.2 almost on the same day I got the phone. However there are some guides on how to downgrade your Android OS to 0.83 or lower before rooting it so I'll be giving it a try shortly.
Please let me know how you get on and save the links to the guides you use - if you don't mind.
Good luck

[Q] 4.22.651.2 vs 4.24.651.1, will the update break or prevent future root-ability?

Executive Summary
I had my Evo replaced the other day and the new one came with 2.3.3 (Gingerbread), build 4.22.651.2 (with HBOOT 2.16.0001). Yesterday, the phone told me that a new OTA update was available, v 4.24.651.1.
Will updating break any future chances of root? Will it break anything else? Are there any drawbacks?
Long version
I bought an Evo on launch day, and it wound up having the screen separating problems, so I eventually got another unit from the store. This one wound up having the white spot on the B. They replaced the screen at the local store, but the new screen had a stuck pixel, a crack around the power button, and the front camera did not work. They ordered me a new phone, said it would take a while, and they'd call me. I never got their call after a month, so we did this whole song and dance again about a week and a half ago. The new phone came with Gingerbread on it. It seemed cool, seemed to give better battery life and all was happy (there was a restart option in the power menu! that was the first reason I rooted(Quick boot)!!!). Till I looked up how to root the thing. I don't like waiting It seems I'll be doing that anyways though.
So the new phone came with 4.22.651.2 (with HBOOT 2.16.0001) and yesterday, the phone told me that a new OTA update was available, v 4.24.651.1. Since I don't want to screw up my chances of rooting in the future, I am trying to find out if I should update or not. The update does contain a useful fix for me: voice search. The version I have is broken.
Since I tried to be proactive, I used Titanium backup before I got the new phone. I backed up some apps & games and my txt messages. I'm not dying without either, but it'd be nice if I could access them (read txts, copy over save game files).
As far as contributing to make root: if its an automated process, I have maybe a ton of hardware I could set up to throw at it to crunch numbers or somesuch. Mostly older equipment (p2, p3, p4), but I have some stuff newer.
i use to have an evo 4g yes it is possible for them to send an update to lock it back up and fill in the holes so to speak and for not getting root again if you have s-off you can always reflash a new rom to it. that is the way it was when i had one but you are talking a few months since i had mine now, but i imagine it's still the same. just make sure you make a backup before doing it. also to note a lot of devs will make the same rom one it's out so you don't have to worry about rerooting it later os you can wait for them to do that too.
From what it looks like that update only fixed things like Netflix, voicemail ect.... more like an addendum to the original 2.3.3 update. I don't see you having root issues(when available) unless they move to 2.3.4 maybe?
The good news is that a group of people in the Dev section seem to be getting closer to getting root.

[Q] Root method for 2.3 Gingerbread and help please

OKay for weeks now i have been searching ways to Root my HTC EVO I have been looking and looking maybe i am confused so now i see great methods to root the files are no good such as ginger breaks and other ways such you tube videos but unable to find a video who do play by play how to do a easy successful root method now i am currently S-on my Hboot is 2.15 and build number is 4.24 now i know unrevoked is not working since the update make a long story short if anybody has some of a method please reply in a nice way and don't bash me because i may not know this phone stuffed by i am geek in computers so we all have good things what we do best.
Put simply, 2.3 hasn't been rooted yet, they're making progress but you're out of luck for the moment.
Still no method yet, waiting impatiently, check the forums multiple time daily. I'm sure there will be an announcement when it available, so just keep your eyes peeled. Just rooted my wifes evo because she never accepted the OTA, now I'm drooling in jealousy.

Well I have my HTC evo 4g fully rooted with unrevoked. What I did is I broke my phone and I'm under the black tie program with sprint. I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE. They asked if I would rather it come fully activated. Or would I rather activate it myself. I told them I'd rather activate it myself. I paid the 100 dollar deposit and while Isaac activating my phone I stopped the firmware and software update. It only comes on the phone as an ota if you activate yourself. If they activation it you will be stuck where you are. After stopping the firmware update I was sitting at stock android 2.2 aka froyobwith hboot 2.10. If you're willing to spend 100 bucks to do this, it will come a lot faster than the HTC bootloader update or the developers hacking methods. No offense to the development team. You Guy do an amazing job. But yea, that's the way I did it. Then I rooted with unrevoked and am currently running cm7 and am extremely happy with improved battery life along many other things. Maybe this will help you

I agree with this. NEVER EVER EVER EVER LET SPRINT activate a phone. DON'T EVEN LET THOSE ASSHOLES TOUCH IT! Biggest mistake you can EVER EVER make! spread this around. :-D However!, I find it hard to believe on the "I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE."
It might not be unused but it definitely came in mint condition with the froyo firmware on it so that's all I needed lol as of right now if you're willing to spend the 100 bucks its well worth it in my opinion. Good luck getting root guys ill see if I can't find a way to help the devs and the others working in the collaboration in the development section.

That is not necessarily true. My evo was destroyed in a car accident. Asurion sent me my replacement. I was hoping it would be 2.2 and denied their request to activate my phone. When the new phone arrived, it had already been loaded with 2.3.3. I didn’t even bother to activate it and ended up going back to my rooted hero for the time being. Getting a replacement phone is a crapshoot. There are multiple posts on XDA giving anecdotal reports of replacement phones. Most are shipping with gingerbread. Some still will have froyo. Some (very few) will come with S-off. Don’t assume that by breaking your phone and dropping $100 you will automatically be shipped a phone capable of being unlocked at present time.

It really depends on if the phone was made before the ota release date and whatnot. You cn request that it come with 2.2 instead of gb. This method may not work for everyone but I know that it has worked for the friends I have around my area. They saw what happened and wanted to try it and its worked for them. If you feel that its a longshot at getting the right phone
Then by all means stick with what you've got. I just was willing to try anything to get rid of gb. But now I'm running cm7 with a tiamat kernel and am very happy. Little side note: I actually didn't break my phone on purpose.

I see your method and point so I am in KCMO AKA Kansas City MO doing some research online and from Best Buy they have an HTC EVO for 99.99 in white Android 2.2 and even called them to confirmed but doing some thinking and playing around on the Android Market SPB 3D its Awesome since I cant root my phone but I pay the 14.95 that way my phone is not harm and I have my warranty still but i am sticking with SPB 3D
They just came out with the revolutionary root for gingerbread. Look in the android dev section and you'll find it. It works too. I rooted a friends phone using that method and he had absolutely no issues with his phone. Even though my usb cord had a short in it there was no problem with it that made it brick even though it disconnected multiple times. Id have to say that it is a very safe root method. So check it out if you're still interested in root
