WiFi turns off itself - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello mates
I try to surf by WiFi most of the time when I am at home but unfortunately my Desire deactivates WiFi ramdomly after ~ 1.5 minutes. The connection is not lost, WiFi is really deactivated! If I re-enable WiFi afterwards, the same occurs again
WiFi-Standby-Policy is on "Never" and I currently don't use any other WiFi-managing apps.
The problem is really pi**ing me off as I cannot simply browse that way :[
Here is a short Video:

Anyone else having this issue?

What firmware and radio are you running?
Have you tried changing your Router to connect to a different Wi-Fi frequency channel, could be something to do with interference maybe?

FW 2.1-update1
Radio 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Can't imagine that a wrong channel in my router forces my Desire to switch off WiFi... I'm forced to use channel 13 as I would have interferences otherwise
edit: changed it from 13 to 10, didn't change anything.
Could a hardreset solve the problem?

Yes, i was going to suggest you try a hard reset to get rid of any software bugs and set your device back to factory condition.
If that does not work, and if not already done so, then you could try rooting and flashing to a different rom. You could also try a different radio version too as this can improve signal strength of Wi-Fi.

Did a hardreset but problem still persists

I am still having this annoying bug In the meantime I did a hardreset 3 times and also bought another router -.-
Please help me!

I've seen a lot of people complaining about one problem or another on here, and it puzzles me greatly why more respondents don't say the bleeding obvious.. if you phone doesn't work, take it back! That's what warranties are for people!

No wifi after 2.2 upgrade

So I have done the official 2.2 upgrade but now my wifi isn't working. I have gone into software updates and updated the profile, prl, and checked for new software and firmware.
Wifi keeps saying "obtaining ip address". It's my home wifi and before the update it was working flawlessly.
Appreciate the help.
Do I have this posted in the wrong section, or has this question been answered? I've searched high and low.
Try reflashing newest radio and wimax. Flash one at a time. This has happen to me before with wifi and 4g but on 1. 47. If that does not work flash calklins v1. 02 rom. I am using that on wifi typing thos response. Good luck

from the sound of it he flashed the official OTA so probably isnt rooted.
Have you tried it with any other routers to see if it connects?
try unplugging yor router and re plugging it back in to reset it and try connecting if that doesnt work sounds like your radio is messed up and you may have to take ti to a sprint store so they can reflash it if you arent rooted.

I am using the router for my laptop right now so I dont think the router is the problem.
I had the unofficial .3 update which is when my wifi stopped working, then I upgraded with the fix to .6 last night, still no wifi. I am not root, just bone stock .6 froyo...
Take it to sprint service center. Or delete the wifi settings in the phone and reconnect.

The reason i suggest resetting the router is because they often store information about a MAC address, When the information changes sometimes routers have connection issues. you dont see it a lot and since most of the time the information doesnt change (you dont update much on your pcs that would cause this). When it does change (ie a radio from a phone) it can sometimes cause issues. that's why i suggested you restart the router. I have had it happen several times when changing radios on my phones over the years.
Just because 1 thing connects to a router does not mean it cant contribute to another thing not connecting to it. I also wouldnt bet my life that it would fix it or anything.i was just giving a suggestion that HAS worked for me in the past when similar issues happened.IT was a good place to start. It would also help verify the problem is in deed with the phone from an actual tech point stand instead of an assumption.
anyway best of luck with getting this fixed

Gave it a shot, but still no luck. Keeps on trying to obtain IP address. Won't connect at my friends house anymore either.

it is definatly the phone then. It sounds like thw Wimax radio didnt flash right. With out Root i think your best bet is to drop by a sprint store they should be able to reflash it for you.
@chris17house
I have the same issue on my EVO that is still on 1.47.
The first time I connected my router gives my phone a lease for a ip address (lets say 192.168.0.010) and associates it with the mac address of my phone.
When I try to reconnect at a later time, the lease for my phone on the router has not expired, but the router gives my phone a new ip address (let say 192.168.0.020), which causes a conflict with the same mac address, but two different ip address. Once I reset my router and my phone the problem is fixed, because the router releases the lease and my phone does a dns flush.
Do you think flashing the wimax or radio instead of reflashing the entire rom would be worth a try? And if so, where is that file located please.
Ok, so wifi connects everywhere except my home. I have unplugged the router and modem for an hour and reconnected them. I still am unable to connect to my home wifi. Is there something more i need to be doing?
I was having the same problem with work and home, but all I did was forget both locatations and discover them again.

[Q][HELP!] 3G Locking up / Freezing

Hi all,
I've been experiencing a 3G Freeze or Lock up issue for a while (since T-mobile and Orange started network sharing).
I didn't mind it too much before as it was at worst once a day... but now it's happening every time I use the phone!! I've tried different radio's to no help either.
The issue is that whilst using 3G on my phone; after 5 mins the 3G/H indicator shows an arrow uploading but there is no data being transferred. At this time I cannot make phone calls, send texts or anything and I have to either put my phone in Airplane Mode and off Airplane Mode, turn it off and on to unfreeze it, or wait 5 minutes to unfreeze itself.
I'm on T-mobile using the radio 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17 using the latest LeeDroid ROM.
Stupid phone is becoming near unusable. Any help would be appreciated!
Hello,
i have just the same problem. Until now I thought this issue only appears on AOSP based ROMs. I used to be on LeeDroid and never had this problem. I also tried several different ROMs (PirateRUM, DeFrost, Ginger Villain), Radios and Kernels. But no luck.
Sometimes it helps just to go to standby and turn it on again. Flightmode is also an option or wait a few minutes and download comes back again.
I was just about to go back to Leedroid but there seems to be the same Problem.
Maybe it's not the Soft- or Hardware but the carrier? I'm on E-Plus (Simyo)
Any ideas?
I'm on T-Mobile in the UK. I asked them about it but they started accusing me of changing the software and Radio on my phone... which is true.
I've tried my Sim in a ZTE Blade and it didn't happen though. The whole phone just freezes. I can't be rebooting the phone every hour!
Surely someone must know what's going on?
I searched the xda develpers forum and goolge thousand times but didn't find any working solution. But today I found a hint:
- forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=656192
- The *#*#4636#*#* trick is worth a try.
- Maybe 3g watchdog causes the problem.

For me only setting radio to "WCDMA only" fixed the problem...

[Q] Wifi connections fail after phone is on for a few hours

I've noticed over the past couple of weeks that even though wifi is turned on and my usual networks are remembered, (home, work etc...) my One X will not connect to the wifi after it has been on a while.
When I go into settings, the wifi status cycles through 'Connecting...', 'Disconnected' and 'Scanning...'. Turning the wifi on and off on the phone has no effect.
I'm not exactly sure how long this takes to stop working, but if I restart the device, it resets the problem and I am able to use wifi again. With the quick startup and a fairly large data plan, this isn't a massive deal, but it would still be nice to be able to connect to wifi without having to restart...
Anyone had this problem before/got any ideas as to what's causing it or how to fix it? I've searched for this problem in the One X forums but found nothing, sorry if it's been brought up before...
...I have the same issue on these security protocols
WPA (TKIP)
WPA (AES)
WPA2 (TKIP)
WPA2 (AES)
WPA Mixed
Tried switching bands B, then G, now on Mixed B+G but keeps scanning, aquiring ip (Wireless router broadcasting DHCP) then skips back to scanning looping again and again.
If I reset the password on my router then it will aquire ip and be fine, but if I disconnect wireless on the phone and then try reconnect it just loops as before unless i reset the password on the router again..
Tried upgrading firmware to latest
Switched from channel 1 to 6 (midway)
It only works on the most basic WEP (hex10) setting...which surprises me as my Desire, a 2 year old device, worked just fine on WPA.
SO try WEP?

I don't want to spoil your day but I think you have a faulty unit. The same thing happened to me, with my first One X. After 4 days and nights of painfully trying everything that could fix the problem, I returned the phone and got another one. Worked strait out of the box, no issues whatsoever.
The only ways I could keep the connection was to change the security of the router to WEP, or frequently reset the router.
So if you have the possibility, change the device. Good luck.

Hmm ok thanks... Did you go through HTC or the company you bought the contract from? Just wondering whether HTC's replacement service is better than 'post it back and we'll send you a new one in a week'...
Having read in advance about the issues the One X has, described here on XDA, I decided to wait untill a reputed retailer had in physical stock, and got to see and power on the device. This also allowed a quick and hassle free exchange.
Regarding the WiFi problem, you cannot just go asking around every 30':
"... excuse me, could you please restart your
router? ... Or maybe change the security protocol to WEP?..."
I mean it's fine if you only connect vis WiFi at home where you can customize as much as you can, but what's the point of a mobile device if it's just "somewhat" mobile...:banghead:
So try and see if you can get a refund for your phone and get another from a retail store, check for screen spots, screen flickering, screen flex and of course the WiFi issue.
On the other hand the phone is truly amaizing almost cannot let it down...

[Q] Push notifications delayed on WIFI

I've seen a few similar threads to the one I'm about to make. I've tried different suggestions which I will post here. Yet, none of them seems to work and I'm curious to see if anyone of you has a fix for my problem. My phone is an unbranded international HOX using the 9.7.2 ARHD rom by Mike1986. Here we go:
Problem
While being on WIFI my push notifications aren't coming through in time. There's a delay from anywhere between a few minutes up to as much as 40+ minutes. The phone doesn't have this issue being on the mobile data network. I'm also not 100% sure if the delay is still there when I'm on an different router. Even when I turn on the screen again, the messages seem to come in randomly.
Settings
WIFI best performance enabled
Static IP by router
WIFI sleep policy: Wifi always on
Tried suggestions
Wakelock: One thread described using an app called REGPON keep-alive, which installs a wakelock onto the phone to keep the data connection alive. This app did not do the trick. It only drained my battery and the messages still didn't come through.
Wifi performance: Set the phone to maximum wifi performance. This seemed to work for a while but ended up not working proper either
Kernel: Try a different kernel was one suggestion. I've switched from Stock to Faux123 010 kernel. This didn't change anything about the WIFI problem.
Static IP + Portforwarding + Disabling router Firewall: I've tried both port forwarding on port 5228 and even the range 5224-5228. I've also tried setting up triggered ranges. Maybe I'm doing something wrong on this part though. The router firewall is disabled and it should no longer block anonymous WAN packages.
Disable SmartSync: With the Suite Tools that are included in Mike1986's rom I've disabled Smartsync. No results as far as the wifi problem goes.
Probing app: I've tried an app that supposedly probes my router at least every minute in order to keep the connection alive.
Switching between b/g/n network: Didn't make a difference. The signal quality of the router is also good.
The only thing that did work for extended periods of time was using this remote control app that allows me to type through my PC keyboard, where the text ended up on the phone. I've also got an app installed to test push notifications. It's capable of making a log. Maybe that'll give you guys more information.
Right now I'm not sure if it's an issue with the HOX or if my router somehow stops the traffic. I don't recall having this problem on my HTC Desire. Does anyone have anymore tips?
Thanks,
Zendio
No problem with Gmail push notification on Stock 2.17.401.2.
Yesterday I still was on ARHD 9.7.2, also there I never noticed any delay.
Edit: this complies to various wifi networks (@home, @office, @parents etc.)

I am so sorry to hear you are affected by this problem, but also happy someone else is experiencing the exact same thing as I am !!!
I have tried different solutions to no avail.
Would love to hear something on this topic !!
Also I should note, I don't have any kind of task killer installed.
In general use WIFI feels really fluid and responsive. I really have no idea what could cause these problems.

I hope so. My One S is experiencing the same thing. I've tried everything above. No luck. Some stuff is fairly critical that I get it as soon as it comes in. I might try getting ahold of a Nexus 4 and do some testing with its wifi, just to make sure it isn't a general Android problem.
What router do you have? My issue was any android device in the house. Turned out it was my router, I put a custom firmware on it and all my trouble have gone away. My friend has the WiFi issue on a virgin media superhub.

I have an Asus RT-N66U. Funny you should suggest that. I'd planned to throw Tomato on it tonight and see how that works out. I did some tests at my folks' and their router had the same results. It's some cheap Netgear thing. Not sure of the model at the mo. I'll post back with results. If not tonight, tomorrow some time.
No go
Well that was unsuccessful. Actually it slowed things down. With the default firmware I get notifications from the instant I press power to wake up my phone. With Tomato there was a second or so before I got them.
Time to try DD-WRT tonight to see if that does the same thing.
I have an rt-n56u so the older version of yours and I'm running the Asus wrt that is being made, its fixed all my problems and is awesome tbh.

Set Beacon mode power safe (BMPS) to 0 in WiFi ???.ini config file should resolve this problem.

One X Wifi Problems After 4.2.2 Update

Hello, i know this has been discussed here before, but i wanted to ask for help anyway. My Wifi was working perfectly fine on Android 4.1, but after this update to 4.2.2 its really bad.
I know its software issue, pressing right top corner of my HOX doesnt help at all. I tried factory reset, but it didnt help. I´m running official ROM and no root. The problem is that sometimes when i have full signal strenght, the wifi speed is still horrible (like 0.5mb on 10mb wifi).
Any suggestions what to try? Thanks a lot

I have exactly the same problem. All HTC customer service suggested was factory reset, tried that and no difference. On 4.1 it worked fine on my wifi at home throughout the house, now on 4.2, works ok downstairs but useless upstairs even when it says I have 4 bars of signal. Very one times flaky though and sometimes drops to 1 or none. This is a disaster as I understand there is no way to roll back to 4.1. This is unbelievable!! How can an official update totally break basic functionality with no way back!? Searched all over Internet to find a solution and no luck, even though a fair few people seem ro have this problem. Is not a hardware problem, as OP, squeezing top right makes no difference. Have tried static IP, doesn't help. Desperate for help, can any wise heads on here suggest anything? Thanks!
So wish I had not updated, it worked brilliantly before.
Same situation here after the update... With full signal keep having horrible Wifi speed... :'(

Do you have the same problem 4play975? Seems quite a few people do..! As per OP my phone is not rooted and don't want to root it really.
Any chance anyone can suggest any other solutions to try?
Failing that, some details on what Richmondos fix is would be useful!!
Yeah, I really dont want to root my phone too, because i have warranty for more than 1 year now and I will sell the phone in future, so I dont wanna risk loosing warranty..
I also have similar problem! But it varies, sometimes it's bad and sometimes not??? Phone is stock and locked and don't want to unlock and install custom stuf, until warranty period is over.
Hello to all
I have the same wi-fi problem on my HTC One X since I made the update.
Is there any way to solve this?I hope so, because Wi-Fi signal is very bad, and I use it a lot of time.
I have CWM recovery installed, bootloader unlocked, and s-on, recently I have rooted my phone,
but at this moment is not.
I dont care installing new kernel, radio,etc........I just want to solve this problem :crying:
Tanks to all
I have a problem with my wifi too since the Andriod 4.2.2 and Sense 5 update, but it seems to be a bit different from yours. The speedtest.net app and the ping & DNS app give the same results as my PC that is hard wired to the router, so speed and ping seem to be fine.
But I get errors like Connection Problem Authentication via the proxy server was unsuccessful - but I don't use a proxy server. In the HOX wifi settings for that router the Proxy settings are Manual, Proxy hostname 127.0.0.1 and proxy port 3128. Are these correct for when there is no proxy? If switch from Manual to None and go back in then it has gone back to those settings.
Another error is Connection Problem this page contains too many server redirects. But the page displays fine if I switch to mobile data.
Or I get Connection Problem there was a network error. Again it works fine on mobile data.
Then there are some webpages that give a 404 page cannot be found error. Again it works fine on mobile data.
Some of these problems are repeatable on the same webpages across different routers in different buildings.
Sometimes when connecting to a router the HOX connects and the loses the connection and then reconnects up to 10 times before settling on the connection.
Like you I would rather not root etc if possible.
So, noone know a solution for users without root? I found out that on some wifi (in school), it works quite fine even on worse signal. But before update, it was ok on every wifi..
Hi
i have the same problem with my wlan connection. Nearly 100kb/s.
I had tested my internet download speed on my computer and takes interesting information:
my internet connection is 70MBit, this means i can download with nearly 8,2 MB/s.
If my HOX is not connected to the router, the whole downloadspeed is available on the computer. But if the HOX is connected, the downloadspeed is only 1 MB/s.
After disconnecting and rebooting the router, the internet connection is as well as before.
Does anyone makes the experiences?
regards
Daniel
I don't have the speed problems, Speedtest.net app gives the same results on my HOX as my PC.
One of my wifi problems is to do with the Wi-fi connecting to a weak signal instead of the stronger one - I have worked around this by installing WiFi Fixer App which works well at switching to the stronger signal.
Also there are some websites that give errors like Server Error too Many Redirects (for example http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ does that for me) or 404 Error - Page Cannot be Found (http://fahrbot.co.uk/) or are sometimes slow to load - I have found that these issues don't happen with the Opera Mini app, so why does the stock browser give these problems when on wifi, but not on mobile data?
Another one is that if I click a link in a webpage (or type in a URL) that takes me to a webpage that has a mobile version as well as the desktop version I get a strange URL that doesn't work. For example on mobile data typing in www.abmobileapps.com takes me to the mobile version of the website, but on wifi the URL automatically changes to http://www.abmobileapps.comhttp/www.abmobileapps.com/ and the page cannot be found. Again it works in mini Opera on wifi.
WIFI FIX
if you use rooted device, use lyapota mods and flash modpack http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2114584 (contin wififix and other).
for me works great :highfive: (my router has openwrt)
I found out that on some other wifis speed works just fine. I have router D-Link DIR-600 with stronger antenna than it was stock. I use WPA2 security and Dynamic IP.
Is there anything what I should try to fix it? Thanks for any suggestions.
Here are some advices how to fix the WiFi issues - router dependent (need access to the router setup):
1. Make sure that you are not using channel 11-13
2. Disable "WMM Support" in router Wireless -> Advanced Settings. Note: this will force G-only speed (54Mb)
3. You you want to keep the N speed, put your phone in the highest possible QoS priority without disabling the "WMM Support"
Hope this helps

maybe it helps
After update,
i can't use my home wifi (Innacomm),using other wifi okay.
conneted but can't surf internet (error 404) but can only use opera mini (very very very slow).
Using other device no problem with the wifi..anyone can help me? TQ :crying:
The problems I am having with proxy and 404 errors are all caused by the Web Protection feature in Kaspersky Internet Security for Android since the OTA to Android 4.2.2 (it worked fine previously). I have installed the latest KIS 11.1.4.141 from the Kaspersky website (because Google Play says it is up to date at version 11.1.3) but the problem still occurs. So I have turned off Web Protection in KIS and all my issues have been cleared up.
