[Q] Which root has least Sprint crap, most stable WiMAX, and best battery use??

So far I have tried unrEVOked and AVA-FROYO V10.
unrEVOked is little bit behind on latest kernels and is stuffed with Sprint garbage. It did have great battery life with 4G and WiFi enabled (12 hours for me).
AVA-FROYO V10 was OK, very little Sprint crap... but battery life on it was extremely unpredictable (from 4 hours to 12 with cell standby chewing up most).
Unfortunately the latest radio update messed it up and now I need to reflash everything, so might as well look at other roots.

I didn't have the best luck with AVA V10, but V9 has incredible battery life. Here is a link:

Whichever ROM you download, you can open the zip (don't extract), go to system>apps and delete any apks you don't want it to install when you flash it. Of course, make sure you know what apks you are removing first so you don't get problems later and have to end up re-downloading/re-flashing your phone.

unrEVOked is not a ROM, nor a kernel, and has nothing to do with battery life. Other than the superuser app showing up, it should not affect anything at all. It's a rooting process, specifically intended to unlock your NAND (S-Off, visible in the bootloader).
Popular ROM options are Fresh, MIUI, CyanogenMod. Fresh has fully working WiMax. CM is close. Don't know about MIUI, but it's probably not packing working 4G. None of them have any of the Sprint apps by default.
You can bake your own Fresh ROM with whatever you want included. CM doesn't even include the Google Apps by default (you can add them easily), so it's even trimmer.
Once you are fully rooted, and familiar with the nandroid backup process (and Titanium Backup), you can switch between ROMs fairly easily and make your own decisions.
To get started, root and then flash Fresh. Actually, wait a few days (but don't accept the current OTA if you haven't already), and install Fresh once it's been updated. Because it's based on stock with Sense, you can probably flash without clearing your data (DO clear your caches) and get off to a quick start.

Yeah, I am still learning this rooting process. I have very little time available for playing around a bit and no way in hell am I going to use time of my devs in the office. Hence me doing it the lazy way - asking you which ROM is the best for my needs and then flashing and forgetting it.

MYNs is popular or if you want a stock one, I suggest looking at the ReEngineered Stock ROM that aamikam made. He spent alot of time fixing up the apks so that they are smaller in size and speeds up the ROM.

i would just find a rom that you like and run with it. the rom itself shouldn't make THAT much difference. from what i have seen, its your kernel that really makes the difference in batter-life and performance. Most of the bloat-ware in the majority of these roms can be removed pretty easily.
Myn has some great stuff for ROMS. Ava V10 (if you have bad battery, try a different kernel)
Here are my 3 fav Kernels:
Hero's Laptop Kernel (all i have to say is WOW)
Net's 4.2 or 4.1
King's CFS

ROMs:
Sense: Calk's or Myn's or for a pure stock feel try ReEngineered 3.70.651.1.
AOSP: Cyanogen Mod (No Contest)
Kernels:
I always stick with Stock on all the ROMs I have tried.

Try Azael X its very fast very little no bloat and stable 4G plus battery life is great he will update to 3.70 soon he's working on it now Rick is very picky about letting his roms out with bugs so he tests and tests before release

Why install/flash custom ROM?

I had HTC HD2 and I installed Android on it, but now I have HTC DHD and android is already build in and it runs grate.
Why install/flash custom ROM?
What are pros and coins?

To name some advantages;
Full control over the phone (root)
Remove bloatware (Default apps the come shipped with the phone / carrier applications)
Themes
Overclocking / Underclocking
Get updates before your region (2.3)
Many more advantages...
Only con i can think of is you have to revert anything if you were to send it in for repairs etc.

Cons..... if you don't read and follow the directions correctly, you could brick your device.
Pros...... overclocking, backup/restore, better battery life, more customisation, access to more apps, faster updates to new android versions, debranding......

And seems like that isn't really the case anymore. Someone (mike19xx from the forums) sent in their DHD with custom rom for repair and got it back without any problems.

It depends on your needs. On the rom threads (or even sites) you can usually find the features and you should consider yourself to think about if it's senseful for you. If you are just a "normal user" who probably doesn't need things like root access or overclocking and extra possibilities like ftp, ssh, vnc, etc. servers with full access it may not be so convincing for you. Usually you get a good speed improvement from several roms and as said newer version without branding. But also bugs you won't have in stock roms (but maybe other bugs from stock remain then ) as developing such things is never "perfect".
An important fact could be that you can only backup anything properly with root access afaik. But this should also be possible with altered stock roms.
Generally you get yourself some freedom I would say.
For the roms: You should do some nandroid backups using clockwork recovery and then simply switch by backing up, installing/restoring and then compare what you like more.

Although, if you are very happy with how your phone behaves, you might want to think again if you really want to flash a custom rom.
Pros are as mentioned in above posts. Cons: you might brick your phone.
In any case, if you root / s-off your phone, you will have a device that is enabled for the future. If HTC decides not to update your device to the latest android version, you will be able to do so yourself if a dev has cooked it to be used with DHD.
You never know if HTC will be able to fix all exploits in future OTA updates(unlikely, but still).

I believe the chances of bricking your phone is quite narrow.
I almost bricked my phone, by trying to install "FULL WIPE" via ROM Manager ( ROM manager boots into CWM and runs the ZIP and reboots it ) .
For those who dont know, FULL WIPE zip will clear out all traces of ROM on your system. Essentially, I or rather ROM Manager rebooted my phone without having any ROM installed.
But thankfully a simple battery pull was all that was needed to fix it. I was able to get back to the CWM, from where I installed the new ROM, and everything was working as "desired"

Haha, that's exaggerating it a bit mate!
Not everyone who uses custom ROMs are concerned with superficial benchmark scores! Most will agree they don't relate to real life performance.
The reason I use custom ROMs are thus:
1/ Increased stability
2/ Bug fixes
3/ Increased REAL LIFE performance
4/ Superior battery life
5/ Full customisation
6/ Added features
HTC makes some great phones, but XDA Developers make then way better

yes tried ARHD (3.0, 3.1, 3.2), I went back to stock as there where all little issue's with it, that are not in stock.
I need a stable, trustworty platform, which you don't get by pressing the last juice out of the phone hardware. I think the devs do great work though, guess it is just not for all of us
Now I stop, cause this is NOT on topic anymore. Bottomline if you're happy with your phone the way it is from factory (topic starter), then there is no need to use a custom rom

I use a near stock, deodexed rom. Only thing I have gained is root and the ability to add themes, such as the funky power control widgets. I have used other roms in the past but there are from time to time issues if the rom has been modified too much.

Try Cyanogenmod, MIUI, Myns Warm, and MikFroyo

I would add Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 to the list mentioned above, specifically with the Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel and LauncherPro. It flies on my device and everything works.

If your looking for AOSP try Cyangenmod, Ultimate Droid,
Sense My favorite so far is probably Mikfroyo.....Second Myns warm...third Fresh....
Just flash all of them and just mess around to find out what you might like. a good starting point is to download Rom manager but don't use that program to flash, just use it to download, then boot into recovery and flash manually. Good luck...
If your really wanting to play around you can try flashing different kernels which I am still trying to figure out a good sense kernel to use for mikfroyo. Good luck

Personally, I have been running Deck's 2.3.3 GB AOSP ROM. It's fast, stable, and everything works, including 4G. I use Tiamat's 3.3.8 SBC kernel and get great battery life as well. You can find his thread at PPC Geeks. He said when he releases the final version, he'll post it here at XDA.

Deck's GB is def my fav GB ROM. Everything works. The final version (1.0) is releasing today at 6pm est. The main thread is at PPC geeks, but Deck said he would start an official thread here once 1.0 launched.

"Best" -- in this case -- is subjective.

Congrats on rooting. Just remember that rooting isn't everything. It's just like getting an admin or superuser account on a Windows or Linux machine. It gives you the ability to modify system files that you normally can't do as the default user.
You need to make sure that your phone is NAND unlocked and you need to flash an alternate recovery. A recovery is kind of like a boot-disk built into your phone. You can boot into "recovery mode" and flash data to the phone. This is how you install a new ROM. The two big recoveries are Clockwork and AmonRa.
Basically you download a ROM in zip format, put it someplace on your SD card where you can find it, boot into recovery, do a backup (make an image you can restore from if things don't go well) and then format data, cache, dalvik, etc.
Once you have a clean slate, flash the ROM from the zip file on your SD card and wait for it to finish. Reboot and enjoy your new phone! It's like installing a fresh copy of the OS with various modifications.
There is a bit more to it that all that but that is the gist. Once you are familiar with the process it's easy. Before long, you'll be comfortable with reading about a new ROM, making a quick backup and flashing it to check it out. If it is good you keep it, if it sucks you restore your old backup. I go through phases where I like what I have and then the bug will bite me and I try like 2 or 3 ROMs in a week.

Just my 5 cents, but you should get better battery life on 3.3.7, as in 3.3.8, the minimum voltage was raised to help those that flashed the kernel and natively got reboots.

FOR ME:
When I'm in an AOSP mood, it's CyanogenMod. It was the first one I tried and I'm too lazy to adjust to other AOSP roms LOL. I have tried other AOSP roms, but I like the features included in CM and the support he gives.
When I'm in a Sense mood, it's usually Mik roms (MikFroyo, MikZ, MikGinger, etc) because what he does to those roms is nothing short of amazing. Speed, stability, and everything just works. When Myn gets around to releasing his Gingerbread rom that's going to be my DD.

Well if you are looking for 2.3.3 with everything working including 4g and GPS I would recommend CyanogenMod. You battery life might be kinda crappy even with the Tiamat 3.3.8 kernel as compare to a 2.2 rom.

Im a fan of Mikz and Kings is you like sense. They both do amazing work and their custumization is top notch.

I'm running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo (Sense ROM) with the Netarchy 4.3.1 cfs-havs-nosbc kernel and Launcher Pro Plus.
Lightning fast underclocked at 499 mHz awake and 128 mHz with screen off (using SetCPU). Battery life is shocking too with the Seidio 3500 extended battery. Unplugged at 7AM and heavy usage all day (phone calls, texting, email, web surfing, Pandora, etc) it's still around 45-50% at 11PM
Always searching for a better battery kernel though, lol

Sorry, but people claiming everything is working on CM7 for htc evo obviously don't use their cameras. Still shots are not taken at full 8mp at proper aspect ratio. There is also no 720p recording.
Have a look at Elite Series III.It's super fast and has everything working. The theme it comes with is amazing. Proper flash instructions are on that thread and there is nothing else you need to fux with after flashing.

Should I, Shouldn't I - Custom Rom

Hey everyone,
I have bought myself a Galaxy S 2 which is brilliant and has taken over from my Desire as my main device, but this has led me to the question, is it worth rooting my Desire and playing with custom roms now I do not have to rely on it as my main device?
It is on Orange, android 2.2, and if I mess it up, I suppose I could just drop it in a pool of water and return it on insurance lol
Reason I ask is because all the rooting threads confuse the crap out of me, but I have always been interested in messing around and seeing just what this phone is capable of or just what could be done to speed it up or have it looking super cool with new user experience.
I suppose the main question is, can you customise the phone to the same level without rooting and custom roms, and is it really that much better when rooted?
Any opinions are very welcome.
Also, it is an SLCD, orange branded but network unlocked using the CD method I found on the forums. Is there anything I need to know about my phone, before I root, if I decide to root.
Anyway, thanks for any and all opinions or help on this.

I currently use LeeDroiD 3.0.8.2 (GB + sense) in A2SD+ version. Fast, stable and enough features inside for me.

to me installing custom rom is more because of curiousity. I learned quite a lot because of this custom roms thingie, since i was too worried to try it and done a LOT of reading here and there. until now, lol

Thanks for the replies So do you guys think that the custom roms improve the phone? If not improve, is it fun again playing with the phone when you've installed a rom?
I'd love to install something with a new version of sense to see what it's like, as playing with the Desire HD in a shop, it seemed really good.

I was also worried in the beginning but I read all the tutorials on forum and it is very easy to put custom ROM. Also I'm using 2.1+3.0 sense and it is very nice + ROM is fast and stable

Just done Unrevolked and phone is in ClockworkMod Recovery now, seems it is rooted lol.
I will leave it there and read more see what else I can do or what my next step is...

Ok, i'm getting excited now, as i've rooted and S-Off'd my phone now, and have gparted ready to sort out the SDCARD
This is where i'm stuck as I don't know which ROM to use, although I believe a gingersense (If I can convince myself I don't want to use camera?) or a HD Rom would be best for me to try.
I think the AOSP? Stock android roms are a little .. shall we say .. ugly, and the MIUI (iphoneish) ones are too iphoney.
So what do you guys reckon are the best gingersense or HD roms about?

I've rooted my phone plenty of times and flashed CM 10. I find myself going back to stock every time. I rooted again. So now what? Sorry for asking such an annoying question. I'm just at a loss with this. I need some direction.

What exactly is your question? If you don't know why you rooted maybe you shouldn't be rooting in the first place. You don't root just for roms, root is administrator access to the system. It allows you to access the system files usually blocked to the end user. Roms are just custom OS's chosen by the user and their tastes/preferences/requirements. You should probably do some more reading so you know what it is you're doing before you break your phone.

if you find yourself constantly going back to stock, you should check out the custom TouchWiz ROMs. these will give you the stock experience modified for speed, power and battery savings. plus the fact that they are fully customizable.
just go to the 2 different Android development threads for this phone, you will find everything you need and more.

Either of these roms you can make your way. Plenty of options to give you the look and feel you want. Support is amazing for these two as well.

Then try shooting for a custom kernel and optimizing it for better performance.
Or better yet, find a stock optimized kernel and it'll be all good OR BETTER THEN THAT....

Both the above listed roms do have an optimized stock kernel with tweaks for optimization.

I don't root just to say "I'm a hacker" I have a decent amount of knowledge on what root access is. It is my fault for wording my question like I did. I keep going back to stock because I can't set my phone up the way I'd like. Also, for those who are developers...how do you do it? Developing seemed much more easier on Google's Nexus Line.
