Bricked/Broken HTC Desire ? Please help ! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I think I have done something I shouldn't have. I have messed up my phone.
I tried to root my HTC Desire, but it boots into a black screen with htc in the center and a triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle. - I tried booting normally - (power on) and into boot mode (volume down and power on)
I am also not sure that the SD card is correctly turned into a Goldcard, and now I have no way to make a goldcard.
What have I tried ?
1. 'adb devices' does not see the phone.
2. 'fastboot devices' sees the phone and returns with the serial number.
3. Fastboot :
C:\android\tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (1832 KB)... OKAY [ 0.276s]
writing 'recovery'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 0.482s
C:\android\tools>fastboot flash boot boot.img
sending 'boot' (1602 KB)... OKAY [ 0.243s]
writing 'boot'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 0.424s
OK - so I really messed this up - lets try to recover:
4. Downloaded RUU
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
---- It sees the phone, and requests to update the ROM from image 1.21.405.2 to image 1.21.405.2 - click next and it tries to send the image to the phone up to a point - vibrates 7 times - loads up 39% and then hangs.
OK - so on the RUU screen it says in red that I should not remove the usb cable - the devices is not working so what can go wrong ? deep breath - "ba... of steel?" - yes - remove the usb cable
RUU returns with ERROR[155]: UNKNOWN ERROR - and a recover button
Click recover - yes my android screen shows exclamation marks in four corners - it means the update has failed - follow the steps and it returns with "Error recovery is successful. The update process is ready to resume."
So we try again - run the RUU tool - oh no - same result as above - yep my initial statement is still factual - I have messed up.
Can anyone help ?

When you get theblack screen with htc in the center and a triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle, you need to hold volume up and push power. This will take you into the recovery menu. My advice is put the fake flash update.zip on the root of your sd card and then flash it from this menu to get into proper recovery.

There you go
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...com/309939/usb-brick-rickrolled-b0rked-fixed/

Thank you for the reply, but that does not seem to work.
Also if I follow the instrcutions on the web site you referred to I am stuck with step 1, create a gold card - with the phone in this state I am unable to create a gold card.
It stays on the same screen ? Am I just unlucky ?

Can you not find your htc generic or operators official rom and run the ruu and that should put it back to how it came?

Hi Guys,
Thank you for your assistance - it is helping !
I have the same problem as described by another thread ("Killed my Desire") in which a gentleman by the name Ronaldo mentioned that he eventually got it working by using tiny Linux, however "after many tries"
I did try to download an RUU tool, but it fails with an error. (ERROR 155)
I could not find the official operators RUU as it was an unlocked phone - bought online - so I am not sure from which operator is it coming.
One question - it was working on all operator networks - therefore I assume it was unlocked but not rooted ? does this mean I do not need a goldcard ?

[Q] HTC desire Z stuck in booting after downgrade attempt

Hello,
I have a phone that is now stuck at white screen with green htc logo after an attempt to downgrade following this guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
However i had already downloaded a PC10IMG.zip with this tool :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521019
I first tried using the tool, but it always failed. It seemed to me the script failed on getting temproot. (I then manually downloaded the PC10IMG.zip in the .bat file just incase it was a problem with the wget it uses or something)
After that i followed the guide instead and gained temproot, changed version and gaining supercid through the goldcard method.
I then tried downgrading using the manual method using the PC10IMG.zip mentioned above (Its alot smaller than the ones mentioned in the guide. I have a suspicion it is for another phone perhaps). Bootloader recognized it and started "upgrade" process as expected. After it worked with that for a while it rebooted and since then I have been stuck on the white/green splash screen on normal boots.
I can still get into Hboot, but I cant do anything there. Nothing seems to work there. Neither volume +/-, trackpad nor powerbutton does anything.
I can also get into fastboot. This seems to work better, but when i try to flash the image then it just gives me :
D:\platform>fastboot-windows flash zip StockRom.zip
sending 'zip' (291447 KB)... FAILED (remote: 02 data length is too large)
HBOOT screen shows me the following:
VISION PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.82.0008
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.08.04.30_M3
I havent tried altering the contents of my SD card in fear of making things even worse.
Any tips/tricks/hint would be greatly appreciated!
Got some rather excellent help from #g2root to fix this today.
My main problem was that I had flashed the wrong img and that my Golden SD was not working correctly. Got that sorted out by using another SD and made it golden in another device.
Then proceeded to upgrade it to the newest g2 software (since that was what i had tried to do in the first place. Namely using the g2 img in a Desire Z device), downgrade it, rooted it and installed the necessary tools to get Andromadus running
Thanks to pierre_ja, skorgon, Uni_Ced and Catherall for the patience, moral support and excellent help! The amount of handholding from pierre_ja was astonishing
G2 img
Can i ask where you obtained the G2.img file, I am in a similar situation. Thanks
We used this one PC10IMG_Vision_TMOUS_2.15.531.3_Radio_12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3.zip

Not with an HTC Vision, you can't... You need an PC to do this.
That's too bad. The G2 used to easy. Thanks for the reply!
Edit: So that goes for the G2 aswell correct?

I have tried to flash the provided earlier in the post (PC10IMG.zip).

This is your problem, adb can't see your phone. Was it up and running when you tried this ? If so it's your adb setup. Have you used adb before on this phone ? See my signature for a link to a guide to setting up adb.

For the G2 there is a new program called mr. root, wich makes everything a bit easier, but you still need an computer to do it. So that's correct indeed.
From memory that 99 error means you used htcdev.
You can find more info on that here

The cmd's seem to be working from the cmd prompt. for example the phone did go into boot loader.
The phone is in a state where it will not boot up. Fails on the htc logo.
However boot loader is not functioning, every time it directs me to clock work orange mod screen. Which does not function either
Same problem!!
Hi, im really new here, and i googled the 'symptoms' of my broken HTC desire Z and this thread came up. My phone is showing exactly the same writting as what you described, but i really really dont know why. i dont know what all these technical terms mean/do but i REALLY miss my phone and want it to work again!! I would really really REALLY appreciate any help anyone could offer me, because the warranty is up so i cant send it back!
Thank you so much!
So to get this straight, you've tried to root your phone and it went wrong. If so, can you still get into your recovery?
-Turn off phone, hold down the power and volume up button. Then ou should get your bootloader. Once that's loaded slelect recovery with your volume buttons and confirm (press "enter") by pressing your powerbutton. Then your phone should restart in recovery. If you haven't changed your recovery image, you should be able to get the stock ROM running again.-

Factory reset is impossible

In short, I'm trying to factory reset the phone to it's default settings, but every attempt is met with a failed attempt. Here's the specs
HTC Incredible
Android 2.2
Locked
S-ON
Hboot 1.02.000
Software: 3.26.605.1
Baseband: 2.15.00.07.28
Upgrading using the RUU file, PB3120000_Incredible_C_hboot_1.02.0000_4.08.605.2.exe, does nothing because even when it says it succeeds, the software version is the same. Tried the PB31IMG.zip method doesn't work because I get the error, "Main version is older". Going into recovery mode and resetting from there does nothing either because that fails.
The closest method I've seen which resembles mine is from this thread, but because the phone is deactivated I can't access the market to download and install rom manager to fix what could be a corrupted recovery? On top of that, I spent over an hour working with SDK, and came to the conclusion that I'm out of my depth. If anyone could point me in the right directions.
Edit: Figured out I had the wrong zip file so when I finally got it to update to 4.08.605.2 image, the boot screen is stuck at "HTC Incredible" splash screen, so I'm to assume I bricked it?

Yes, I can get to hboot, and unfortunately doing a factory reset from there didn't work either? What are my options now you think, since I ran out of ideas a while ago.

Try this ruu thru hboot http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip. If that dosent work i would unlock your bootloader with http://htcdev.com/bootloader. Then flash a custom recovery. Then from recovery try to do a full wipe and a flash of a rom.
How do I get access to the sim card from my computer and install the zip if the phone won't boat? Or is there a way I can still do this through hboot?

Well to put the PB file on the sdcard you would need to remove it from the phone, and then use a pc to put the file on there. You would most likley need an adapter, as most card readers dont do micro sd. However you can use fastboot to flash a pb file. Place the PB file on your pc in the same folder as fastboot.exe. Then type the folowing one at a time.
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Code:
fastboot flash zip PB31IMG.zip
Also unlocking the bootloader, and flashing a recovery only requires the use of fastboot.
EDIT: I guess i should have asked first if you have fastboot adb and their drivers setup on your pc? And if you know how to use them?
Sorry bout not mentioning I'm still a noob at this but for the most part I'm pretty tech savvy (just with iphones shhhh), I was in the middle of updating my progress, and I just finished installing SDK and recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-vivo.img, so now after installing the PB zip udate I got this message, "Failed (remote: 99 unknown fail)". What version of PB is this anyways?

The latest 4.08.605.15. Wait that is not a correct recovery for this phone. So you are unlocked now? If so that is why the fastboot ruu failed, the bootloader must be locked.
Yea I googled it not too long ago and figured that out. So what's the right version then?

OK, I think I just made things worse. First off, I didn't know I shouldn't of unlocked it because now I instead of getting that error 99 when trying to mount the PB, I get the message saying, "bootloader err command error !!!" after I enter "fastboot oem rebootruu". And trying to mount it while it's unlocked I get the message, "FAILED (remote: not allowed)". Sad face all around. Also, those 2 links you gave me are broken or just aren't working for me, so I'll try to find other links in the mean time. But as far as re-locking the phone, I still get the same messages as above.

You can relock by typing in fastboot
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Or your saying you already tried that and it have an error?
The links should be working again.

Well you could try thay ruu in the post above, or go to recovery, do a wipe, and flash a rom.
EDIT: To flash a rom thru recovery you would need to unlock again with the bin file.

Lol we kind of have two different things going here, and they kind of conflict. So either stay locked and try that othet ruu, or unlock again and wipe and flash a rom with cwm.

Hi there,
I have just tried to root my HTC one, and I am now stuck in the boot loader screen and it is showing *Tampered* at the top.
Can someone please advise me, or point in the direction of what I need to do now?

Once you have unlocked your bootloader then it will show you tampered.
Download a custom recovery (I prefer TWRP) and flash it via fastboot.
Then download @Chainfire Supersu flashable zip from his site and flash it in recovery.
You have rooted your phone.
Ater placing my device into fastboot mode, I have tried flashing my downloaded TWRP file to my HTC One in Terminal using these instructions:
Now let's flash your downloaded TWRP file to your HTC One. Type one of the following commands into your terminal window, depending on which file you downloaded above.
For the International editions, type:

However I get the following error:

hi,
plz try CWM, M8 got some issues with twrp.
philz_touch_6.26.6-m8.img is the stable version plz try that.
http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/m8
So I am starting to move forward :
I have followed the instructions to install philz_touch_6.25.5-m8.img by flashing it to my HTC where I get the setup screen for philz_touch_6.25.5-m8.img. I cleared the cache and I then installed the UPDATE-SuperSU-vx.xx.zip using the install zip from sdcard and then rebooted the HTC.
Unfortunately I have come back to the bootloader screen.
For what the instructions say it should be working now, but it does not seem to be?
Now it seems that whatever I try I cant seem to get past the bootloader....
And when I power down from the bootloader, It shuts down for a few minutes and then boots back into the bootloader.
Not sure what to do now?

May be you are using the wrong version. If you have international device you should try international version of philz/cwm recovery.I would suggest you to use TWRP since it is basically meant for htc devices.

I have been fiddling with android 4-5 years ago, but that's it, so I consider my self a noob.
here it goes...
1) I have purchased an "international ver. HTC M8 brand new" from amazon third party seller for 200.00 USD
2) came with many evidence showing it's not brand new, but well disguised to look like new. See details:
1. I can tell it's a resealed package from experience; cable is a generic one that tries to mimic the original HTC cable, and it only charges (no data transfer). The charge brick has no film and has micro scratches.
2. Phone has no carrier logo, boot screen has no carrier logo, system has no carrier bloatware. The firmware seems to be unlocked/developer, but the CID(T-MOB010) and MID(0P6B13000) of the phone is T-Mobile!
3. As a brand new phone, it came rooted and S-Off.
4. OTA update fails indicating device has been modified.
3) Coming from a marshmallow phone, I decided to manual upgrade to Android 6. I downloaded the unlocked/developer & T-Mobile RUU from HTC, but both update fails at the black screen with silver HTC logo. (I forgot to mark down the error code, since I'm still a bit rusty from couple of years not digging this deep.)
4) I went ahead and unlocked the bootloader through HTC dev, then performed the same RUU. Same result.
5) I setup adb, then performed CID and MID change to make it the Dev ver. (BS_US002 + 0P6B12000). Ran the same RUU, same result.
6) Then I extracted the zip from the RUU and placed it in the ext sd to flash in hboot. Result was an error of file being too big.
7) I installed TWRP recovery, used it to flash the zip, received error of extraction fail. performed RUU, same result as above, noticed the error 155.
8) Next at fastboot usb, performed command <fastboot flash zip 0P6BIMG.zip> ends up with FAIL and Remote: not allowed message.
9) Finally, I tried RUU mode. Ended with the 32 header error:
Code:
C:\fastboot-win>adb reboot bootloader
C:\fastboot-win>fastboot oem rebootRUU
...
(bootloader) Start Verify: 0
OKAY [ 0.031s]
finished. total time: 0.031s
C:\fastboot-win>fastboot flash zip 0P6BIMG.zip
sending 'zip' (1537810 KB)...
OKAY [ 50.275s]
writing 'zip'...
(bootloader) zip header checking...
(bootloader) shift signature_size for header checking...
FAILED (remote: 32 header error)
finished. total time: 50.415s
C:\fastboot-win>
which according to Sneakyghost's post, he doesn't know what is the cause
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/progress-fuu-m8-t2813792
I have dug through many xda post and google, but had no luck.
I felt pretty helpless and frustrated now, makes me wonder what is going on with this phone.
This is gonna be my last resort, pls if someone knows what's going on and how to fix this, teach me, Please!
feel free to ask about more info, I will try to explain in further details.
I give you the basic idea as I'm away from my PC.
1. To install the official marshmallow RUU exe, you need to fastboot flash its firmware first.
You should be able to find the official firmware in my thread linked in my signature on post #5
2. To fastboot flash a rom.zip, you need to use htc_fastboot not the generic fastboot which gave you the error.
Read this for 3 options on how to install rom.zip - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67314040&postcount=1749

LG G5 (H850) after update to 14.1-20170822-nightly-h850 bricked after second reboot

Hi, i installed the latest LG G5 Update (lineage-14.1-20170822-nightly-h850-signed), the first regular reboot was fine.
The second reboot has "bricked" my phone.
Please check the attached Picture from the phone.
Anyon a idea how to get back the phone to "life"??? :crying:
Thank you in advance for any assistance
MoPhat
This advise comes "as is" and with no warranty and I will not be responsible for any damages of any kind.
That's a soft brick (I wouldn't even call it a brick) and should be easy to resolve.
Did you erase data and system before flashing the ZIP file? You should always do this before flashing a new OS or did you just flash over your original LG5's OS without erasing those partitions?
Try re-downloading lineage-14.1-20170822-nightly-h850-signed and run a crc32 check on both zip files (the one you downloaded originally and the one you downloaded the second time) to see if the crc32 values match. If they don't, that would explain why you ended up in this situation (assuming you flashed the file the correct way). If you are on Windows, you can download a utility called "hashmyfiles" by NirSoft to get the crc32 along with other checksum values. If you are on linux, you can use the "crc32 lineage-14.1-20170822-nightly-h850-signed.zip" command to see the crc32 value and if values do not match, try downloading it again and do the check one more time until the values match. You can also click on the "sha256" and "sha1" links below the link you downloaded the file from and then using "hashmyfiles" you can compare the values whether they match.
Anyway, the way I personally would go with this one is try to enter Recovery mode, erase system, data (and probably boot but not necessary as the OS zip file will over write it anyway) and try again. If your recovery asks you to install root / SuperUser, you should select "No" and use LOS's official SuperUser add-ons if that's what you are after.
Thank you marco-v
I can't check the crc from the file because i have updated the latest Version with the build in update function...
I have tryed to boot in the recovery menu by pressing the power und volume down button, realising when i see the lg logo an pressing again both to (normaly) enter the recovery mode. it appears the same message
http://androidflagship.com/20275-boot-lg-g5-recovery-mode
the only menu that Comes are the "factory data reset" menu, but this makes no difference...
any further ideas?

So it looks like your Recovery mode is messed up too? Not sure how that might have happened unless you instructed LOS to "Update Recovery" .
Have you tried to see if you are able to enter fastboot mode and reflash your custom recovery image again and try to enter Recovery mode again? The one I use on my device (Oppo Find 7) is a TWRP image and I find it very reliable.
You can see if you can boot to Recovery by running the following command from fastboot mode (assuming you have a TWRP image)
fastboot boot twrp-x.x.x-x-h850.img
Replace x.x.x.x with the version of the file.
Tryed, result is:
Code:
C:\Temp\root_H850>fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-0-h850.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 0.430s]
booting...
FAILED (remote: unknown command)
finished. total time: 0.451s
With "adb.exe devices" are the phone not listed
Ok, my device is locked!?!?
Code:
C:\Temp\root_H850>fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-h850.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'recovery' (19076 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.428s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: device is locked. Cannot flash images)
finished. total time: 0.456s
So i have tryed to unlock the device again with the unlock key i get:
Code:
C:\Temp\root_H850>fastboot flash unlock unlock.bin
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'unlock' (1 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.037s]
writing 'unlock'...
FAILED (remote: oem unlock is not allowed)
finished. total time: 0.059s
How can i disable the " Enable OEM unlock" in the developer Settings without a gui???
Ok, fastboot works, that's good but it looks like your bootloader is locked again.
FAILED (remote: oem unlock is not allowed)

Try following these instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/development/recovery-team-win-recovery-project-lg-g5-t3363047 and see if you can get TWRP running and if you do, you can try flashing LOS again but format data + system (you will lose all data) and if you are not careful, you might lose data on internal storage + external storage so read carefully what's displayed on the screen before going ahead.
Also: http://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev?categoryTypeCode=ANRS and this will show you how to unlock your bootloader.

I just read your post, you can try:
fastboot oem unlock
and see if it works. May be it will because it was unlocked already once but can't tell for sure.
Sorry, nothing has worked.
I will try set "upgrade error" back in the lg update tool to flash the original firmware, but i need a SERIAL or the IMEI number, how can i find this out?
Normally, IMEI numbers are located right under the battery on phones that come with removable back covers and batteries. Yours however slides out, it might be somewhere there or perhaps you can check the box / packaging. So the following command didn't work?
fastboot oem unlock
What's the error you got? The official bootloader instructions on LG's website should have worked as it supports your model. To me the only issue you seem to be having is a restricted booloader and once you unlock it, everything should be fine. This is why you can't boot into TWRP using the boot command.
Not worked, the result is:
Code:
C:\Temp\root_H850>fastboot oem unlock
...
FAILED (remote: unknown command)
finished. total time: 0.025s
I see, thx, if the LG official unlock instructions did not or no longer work followed by the instructions here https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/development/recovery-team-win-recovery-project-lg-g5-t3363047, I am out of ideas. Perhaps someone else can help and provide further hints.
