Noob here to sprint and the whole android phone experience. Im still within the 30 day trial period so ive been basically toying with the phone all day for the last couple of days. I got it to where i can tether using PDaNet and the USB cable but its extremely slow so what im loooking to do with it unlock the wifi feature. Ive been at it all day and this is what ive done so far.
I tried rooting the phone using SimpleRoot 1.47.651.1 and went through it all but wasnt not able to get the wifi tethering to work. So i unrooted the phone using the steps on another site and everything worked fine also went through the downloads to have the most current OTC installed. I then did some more reading and was thinking about trying the steps on "IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide! NAND Unlock and ADB Update!!" found on this site but when i opened the phones SD card i noticed that it already has a PC36IMG file in it, is this the same one i need to root it or was this installed from when used the SimpleRoot program? Im not looking to do too much with the phone as far as rooting my main thing is wanting to unlock the wifi tethering then after that if i decide to keep the phone ill see about venturing further. Ive been at this all day and its getting on my last nerve any help would be greatly appreciated, Im on yahoo msngr as well LS954, thanks!

The only way i know of to brick a phone is to flash a GSM Radio and there should be none on this forums
hey whats up. i live in tampa. theres really nothing to the root though, if you can follow the simple steps you should be fine.
I upgraded my evo to .6 update and then ran the unrevoked app and am sticking to that root as of right now for homebrew and wifi tether. There's not much incentive to flash a rom since not much is out there yet. Give it a little time but for now the unrevoked is as simple as can get. Install the app, run the program and it will "root" your phone every time you boot up as long as the app is installed. Uninstall the app, reboot and your phone should go back to stock (i think)
Keep in mind that the nand is still locked so you wont be able to flash custom roms with the unrevoked method but its fine for wifi tether and the sort...lemme know if you got any more questions

Sound easy enough, does that unrevoked app install whatever is needed to run the wifi or do i have to find additional info for that?

Just follow the step-by-step instructions. Figuring out how to do it on your own will help a lot when you have other problems.

My Evo is doing fine, but I was trying to help a friend root his yesterday and the Unrevoked 1-click apk didn't appear to be doing the trick. The only difference I can think of between our two phones is that I haven't downloaded the update that came this week. Has Sprint defeated this root method in the most recent patch?
Yes...they are up to UnrEVOked 3.

Right, this method requires you to use a PC though, right? I'm wondering if its still possible to root it using the unrevoked on-phone application, or has this been defeated? And if so, was the defeat in the most recent patch?
bump. I'm afraid the answer given is still a bit unclear to me. Can someone please clarify?
Make sure you are going to 'unrevoked.com/m' if you want to use it on your phone and avoid having to use the pc method. I forgot the /m when I first tried it and got pretty confused as well.

Yes, this is exactly what I did. The apk downloaded and installed, but didn't appear to gain root when I ran it. I ran it several times, but every time I attempted to run wifi tether, it would say that I wasn't root.
You can try downloading the Simple Root app from the development forum, Its only 4 clicks and its a legitimate full root. It does require the PC, but you seem to know how to use one of those as you got to this website.
Don't take shortcuts because your not sure what you're doing, learn

Thank you for the reply. I'll probably end up Simple Root for myself, but this is for a somewhat elderly friend of mine. He only needs root for wifi tether, since he can't get broadband where he lives (3g is okay). I figured the apk root method would be suitable for him since he would know how to uninstall it if he needed to claim is warranty or something. I won't be around to support his phone for him.
Anyway, thanks again. I'm still learning myself and appreciate the advice.
Ahh ok, he can always hit the wipe button and it will go back to a state good enough for the average sprint rep.
I Installed unrevoked 3by usb because i got last version 147.651.1. Its anyway to unroot and get back to stock rom. I tried different ways and nothing for example i wiped data, hard reset . etc.
Right now i dont have wifi is unable and that why i would like get back to stock. Also i use the method with htc sync and the ruu 132.651.1 andgive me error 171 then reintall the ruu give me error 140 and boot to the main screen/
Please any solution to get back to stock .
thanks in advanced,
title says it all. running stock rooted. turns out, it has gone out of date. i am not running an alternate rom bcuz i need to return my evo in a few days (little bro cracked the screen). i just tried to unroot today, and got the main version older fail. i am on a mac, so any help would be much appreciated.
i have simular prob shipped roms .co has them as exe file run them in order full unroot i sadly have toasted usb which is needed to do this and right now can get fixed for like 30n bucks but cant figure how to get them on fone need flashable ,,,, ithink hope helps
pretty noobish just read alot recently with my prob
I know about these exe files. They are the sprint ruu files, and are common knowledge. The problem is, I don't have a pc. It would be great if I got a Mac fix.

Dont know if this is what you wanted but i've unrooted fine using this file just put in sd card and enter bootloader. I got it from the how to unroot thread in the dev forum the name of the guy i got it from escapes my mind at the moment.

Do you know ...did it wipe recovery and all ffrom what ive heard they havent been looking real close but i dont believe in luck but i dont seem to get away with much these days this phone was from fist day releaseits beat up, but i did the 60 step toast method about 20 trimes getting it rooted too work but i hate idea of parting with it thamks for info though much appreciation
Ever since I first rooted my Evo back in June or so, I havn't paid much attention to the instructions for rooting. Back then, I went through it using adb and a different RUU, etc. Now, with programs like Unrevoked, it seems like a much easier and faster process.
I'm thinking about taking my phone back to Sprint to get the speaker replaced. I know how to fully UN-root, but just wondering if when I get the phone back home, can I get full root again with nand unlocked just by using something like Unrevoked?
Like I said, I hadn't been paying much attention to rooting, and the last issue I really read about was when (froyo?) first came out and you had to root by using some Adobe program, which seemed like a bit of a hassle.
Unrevoked does it all.

Yea, you can. It couldn't be easier.
Unrevoked is so simple!!
Alright, thank you guys very much!
The reason I had asked was, I knew on the Moment, apps like the 1-click root method didnt fully root the phone, so some roms couldn't be flashed properly. Just wondering if that was the case for the Evo also.

Only thing with unrevoked:
1. download hboot drivers
2. install then uninstall htc sync
3. enable usb debugging on your phone
4. all set to go
I promise, I tried to do it myself by looking at some guides on here, but all the links are broken, there are mod addendums and warnings on some of the threads, and htcdev won't even let me log in! I reset my password and immediately entered the one they sent to me and it said incorrect login! Also powershell isn't working with adb services(term 'adb' is not recognized) and the HTC sync software is no longer available for download... not sure what to do!
I currently have a Pixel 3, but my last two phones were HTC phones. The M8(t-mobile) and the 10(sprint/unlocked). I used guides on this forum to root them both. However, I ended up giving the M8 to my sister when I got the 10. I relocked the bootloader so it could be stock again.
The status is "relocked." I want to use the old phones to tether wifi to two old computers that have no wifi connectivity. My HTC 10 does it perfectly, but it is an unlocked model and is still rooted. Back when I got the M8, carriers were very stingy about that kind of stuff, so it is not possible by default. I have seen a few ways to allow the phone to tether from wifi to usb, but they require root.
And now I am here... a couple hours trying to do something that I did once years ago pretty easily, but with a bunch of broken links and services.
Any help is greatly appreciated, I really don't want to pay and then wait for a wifi adapter.
Thanks
