Hi guys,
When I have roaming enabled and I'm not connect to 3G and only the GPRS I seem to miss alot of calls. Is there a way to only connect to APN if 3G is available?
Thanks

I have just tried this but I loose signal when WCDMA is only enabled?
Well that is 3G only, if you are losing signal it's because 3G isn't available where you are located, which is why your phone switches to GSM when given the chance.
I think you missed the OPs point!
What he means is that he only wants the phone to connect to the mobile network whilst in 3G coverage. i.e. he wants to keep the 2G/3G for voice and have the data only active when 3G is available.
Regards,
Dave

But this will stop data roaming all together? I still want it to sync auto
Thanks

That works on Three because Three doesn't have a 2G network. If you are on a network with both 2G and 3G networks (i.e. all the other UK carriers, not MVNOs), it won't do anything.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the feedback. I have actually found an application on the market place called "3G only" it runs in the background and only allows you to use 3G and ignores GPRS. Works a treat!
How are you getting on with this app?
How are you finding this app?
So basically, you can only get "data" type stuff when you are in a 3g area?
Do you find your battery life is better?
What network are you on?
Thanx

Not really done much testing on the battery (not really kept on an eye on it) but basically it will only allow data to connect when I'm in a 3G area! Very useful as I have found I sometimes loose calls when it uses GPRS.
I'm on o2 in UK, Lincolnshire
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the reply, Im also on O2. I have installed it but havent tried it..i will do when i get round to it

I have a U.S. Cellular TP2 working well with T-Mobile (Radio 2.32.00WU) except that the HTC Weather GPS Location doesn't update when it's connected with normal Data plan. It just updates when it's connected to a Wi-Fi connection. Google Maps works fine with either Data or Wi-Fi.Tried many tweaks and cabs on this forum and still nothing. Maybe it something trivial but I don't know what is it. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Set your connection correctly under all setting-connections My work network should but be selected.

What? My Work Network settings are empty. What does this have to do with GPS Data?
What do you mean I need to select My Work Network where? On Connections/ Advanced tab, Select Networks. Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using: My Work Network ? Like it was on default? That doesn't do anything.

It sounds like your data connection is not set up. The advanced tab should point to the data connection, not the Work connection.

The data setup works well enough. I was just asking the previous poster what did he meant by selecting My Work connection.
Anyone know if and how I could turn off 3G but leave data on in 1x only? I'd love to keep data always-on but heard 1x is much better for battery than 3G.

Thanks for that tip. Tried to install it from the market and got an unsucessful install error. Description says it's for CM6 only - I'm running fresh.
You can always unclick mobile network in wireless settings to turn off

True but it's my understanding that disables data all together. I'd like to keep data on but just disable 3G. Reckon it's not possible.
How can you set the Defy to WCDMA Preferred? It constantly reverts off of it.

You mean in the INFO menu? I don't believe you can. At least not with the stock ROM. I believe the choice is controlled by the firmware which varies from market to market, I presume.
That's the same as 3G only? Mine has the option under the mobile network settings. I get three choices (this is exactly how it reads): 2G only saves battery, 3G only better performance, and Automatic Default. Hm you should have the same thing.
In my handset, if you go into Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile networks, there is an option/drop-down box for Select network.
It gives you a choice between 2G only, 3G only and Automatic which is the default option and the only sensible one IMO.
edit: same as bobbyphoenix it seems.
Selecting 3G only means the phone will not use the 2G network ever, so if you were to end up in an area without 3G signal, you'd be disconnected.
Automatic means the phone will use 3G when available and 2G when it's not. As I said before, it's the only sensible choice.

That doesn't answer the question. There are two settings within the testing menu: wcdma preferred and gsm auto prl. The former tries to hang onto 3G whenever possible, where the latter uses an internal list of networks and it decides when to switch.

Yes it does.
Automatic means the handset will use 3G whenever possible - ie 3G preferred.
No - they are two different things, as I explained. The Defy is using GSM PRL, NOT WCDMA Preferred.

When my phone uses wifi calling with wifi preferred (in the wifi calling menu) the INFO (testing) menu shows "GSM only". This choice will not allow 3G connection (2G, yes). When I turn off wifi, the phone switches to "GSM auto (prl)" and I get 3G. I read on one forum where someone claims they switched to "WCDMA preferred" then did a battery pull and it stuck. Also read that the WCDMA selection depletes battery faster. Hey, don't always believe what you read.
Hello folks!
okay, the facts are: Im in very good 3g reception zone, MIUI 1.6.6 with default kernel, .08 radio, data on, wifi off.
Problem is poor battery life when 3G is enabled. Also, when using mobile data the H icon appears and data moves in and out, but sometimes the H icon just disappears and i get network error? I've tried numerous radio/kernel/rom combinations.
When i put airplanemode on, the battery consumption is constant 2mA (currentwidget). With 2G networks only, its 3-6mA. When 3G enabled, mostly the consumption is 20-40mA and sometimes like 10 times in day with minute interval of refreshing i get 8mA readigs. Any app to check if there is some syncing going on? I use only beautyful widgets weather widget, which updates itself hourly. And the normal contacts and calendar sync on. Fellow MIUI users have much lower consumption, a mate of mine gets 2-4mA when 3g enabled.
3g mobile network is one the battery killers. The h icon stands for hsdpa. This the fastest network but the network coverage is not that good yet (except for big cities). Switch network to 2g network (mobile off). If you really need mobile network, switch on 3g. Otherwise stay with 2g. There's imho no sense in using 3g without needing/using mobile network.

I tried using BatteryFu and APNdroid to get rid of my 3G while screen off. But that combination didnt work so well, sometimes it didnt disable my 3g and sometimes it wouldnt reconnect to 3G when unlocked. Any good programs to manage this?
I also wonder, I never cant download anything when 3G icon is appearing in statusbar. Its normally 3G but when I want to use the internet, it changes to H. Why cant I use the 3G network then? Im also having problems when the H goes to 3G the internet connection is lost. For example in market i get network error. The H wont stay there if there is no traffic for few secs.
Configured apn correctly? If you are not sure, do it again. Furthermore, you could try these settings for mobile network:
Uncheck data enabled and set network to 2g/gsm (depending on what you have). When you need mobile network, switch to "wcmda + gsm (automatically)" (name could be a litte different, translated it from germany) and check data enabled. I do it so and it's working fine.

Okay didnt understand very well what u ment by the last part of ur message
APN configured correctly? I have carrier default APN settings which have been working just fine for a year. If u ment APNdroid i didnt do much configuring with it. Gotta give it another try.
Last idea: flash latest radio.
No warranty for any damage.
The tmobile service in my area sucks and it will stay on 4g lte even when I have a very bad connection which drops calls and gives me really bad speeds. Is there an app that will automatically switch lte/gsm/wcdma when the signal is very low so I wont drop calls, waste battery and give me poor dl speeds? Or is there anything else that I can do? Maybe with tasker or a tweak. I would appreciate any type of solution. Thank you.
Is there any thing I can do about this?
On stock Rom go to settings>more networks>mobile networks>network mode.
Pick the one you want. Probably gsm/wcdma auto connect.

Thank you for your reply. I already know about that option. I still want to have access to lte when I have a decent connection. Is there an app or a tasker configuration that if the signal is below a certain level it will switch networks? Also, which network it used to make phone calls? I thought all of them but my friend said phone calls are made on 2g. Thank you!

Is there any solution for this? Also when you are connected to lte are you still making phone calls through 2g? Thanks.
Is this a problem near your home? Can you use wifi calling to help fix the dropped calls? Not sure about how to get the phone to switch from LTE to 4G when the connection is poor. I do it manually right now because my LTE has been acting a little wonky lately where it won't even connect to LTE and leaves my phone in network limbo unless I force it to use 4G. I'd like to see a solution to the LTE - 4G switching too.
Last i recall, there is no tasker or app capable of doing such a thing like switching network preferences. It goes against "policy" per say. But your friend is right about calls being made through 2g. That is how you are able to use data whilst on a phone call. The data is being used through 3G and up, while the call is being used on 2G. now i am not sure about T-Mobile's "HD Voice" calling, that is prolly LTE.
I myself have looked through every single API google has trying to write my own app to change the network preferences and could not find it. There may be an option through root though. Havent found it yet.
Correct.
Calls - 2G
Data - 3G+
TM HD - New LTE Network.
