Quick question to the community here – could someone post or direct me to some information on the architecture of the phone / hardware? What I’m referring to is:
There is a primary boot loader, secondary programming boot loader, the core OS image, the external storage, over the air updates etc…. Then looking into the software information section of the EVO, I see firmware version , baseband version, kernel version, build number, software number, browser version, PRI and PRL version.
Kernel, build, software number and browser version are self-explanatory. However, firmware and baseband are a bit unclear, also PRI / PRL – what exactly are those?
When OTA update is initiated, which elements can be updated?
I have rooted my phone by following the instructions, what I don’t fully understand is what exactly transpired while it was being rooted, and what will happen during the next (2.2) update.
Today I have 0.72 engineering build hboot (which acronym does it fit comparing to all of the text above?). So, if I were (yes, I know, I should not) update the phone over the air, would the very first bootloader be replaced with the newer version or would be out of scope and only the software/build number would change?
Along the way, I’m planning to try to write some code for the android platform and see where it takes me (good with C , fluent in .NET, can read java code, ok with linux [gentoo], fluent in networking and other IT R&D components) – any development pointers that anyone can offer?
this should probably be in q and a

Suggestions to google for something are always useful, I'm not sure why you 'd assume I didn't
for exampel , -- the primary and secondary boot/application loaders, -- most of the information available is about rooting phones, not too much ont he theory on how it works.
I'm still figuring out a lot of this, but I think it is more like boot loader with an os on top of it, like a pc. In a normal boot the white screen with no animation (just the htc logo) is kinda like bios, self test and stuff. Then once you see the animated sprint 4g screen, the bios is done and the loaded rom is running.
Booting into recovery isn't a separate boot loader, it is just another partition in the nand.
I wish there was a little more information about this out there. I kinda feel like there aren't good resources for this. The developers that know this kind of stuff don't hang out in q&a or general, but this kind of question isn't really appropriate for the development section.
I think one of the best things would be to grab the aosp source and build android, I just don't have much time right now.

The recovery image seems to be stored on SD card and not in non volatile memory. So between HBOOT, Primary loader and secondary loader, and (what indicated on the phone as) firmware: is HBOOT is the same as the primary loader and secondary loader loads up the firmware that pulls the image?
HBOOT seems to be similar to bios
SPL seems to be the thing that bootstraps the device (i.e. lilo, grub etc...)
What exactly is the firmware then? if SPL is a secondary software loader, is HBOOT = Primary Loader?

That's a really good way to discourage people trying to help, especially when they are actually helpful. This forum is getting a bad rap for comments like that (and "google it" being the default answer). I do tech support and understand how aggravating it is to deal with people who don't get it, but without people a forum is an empty place... and largely useless.

Actually the bad rap is from people that over analyze things and start going off the handle about it. It was a joke, obviously a joke. He/she pulled up a thread from exactly a year ago that I assume was misread as current. I don't think I barraged them with belittling comments or suggestions of selling their phone and pc and moving to a cave did I. If you care to hit my little name and then tap on that little post history you'll see I actually help. I think I have in ONE thread actually called someone an ass and they actually deserved it based on the other 100+ post doing so as well.

I wasn’t giving ****. I was simply stating that proper use of the search function (with multiple stickies in each sub forum, and agreements when you sign up stating to use it prior to posting) should be followed.
When I was green and first got my android device, I searched and searched and read anything and everything relevant before making any post. Too many people on these and other forums are lazy and don’t put in the time to really learn about their devices before beginning to mess with them. At least half of the people in here shouldn’t even be rooting their phones as they're technically inept from being able to recover from a blunder.
I've read so many posts which shouldn’t even exist if diligent information gathering and processing was actually executed, polluting the forums so much that finding a piece of useful information by simply browsing through all the bullarky, is next to impossible. I personally instead now strictly use the search function when looking for information that I may require.
Also, on page 3 or 4 of that thread, even though the op says "to 2.37.762.2 ONLY" there's been reports confirming it works with his version as well.
I've been experimenting on finding a way to downgrade 2.43.
Once receiving my phone back from repair after a true Brick (where only viable recovery is through jtaging) I found my device was updated to 2.43.661.1 which is part of the unrootable category at this time. So even after not being able to work on my rom for 3 weeks, due to the device being in repair, I still can’t work on my rom because I can’t push apk's and files into system area's to which root access is necessary.

First url points to a method that does NOT work.
psneuter does not work, therefore the goldcard downgrade will not work.
Second url is what I posted as the first response.
@ Babycover
Before attempting to root, take the next few days to learn about things like the goldcard, RUU's, the Android SDK's, and basic linux commands (since android is simply a version of linux). Look at various tutorials on how to do things (but dont actually do them, just take note on similarities, and reocurring commands so if you were to do them you'd be comfortable executing them). Familiarize yourself with everything before experimenting.... makes recovering from a problem a lot easier than reading replies of people who think they know what they're talking about.
Things to note: Any RUU can be used once your device has radio S-off and use them rather than a PD98IMG.zip from your sd card. Your spash screen can only be changed if your device has ENG[ineering] S-off ('ENG' will take the place of 'SHIP' in the bootloader). Do not partition your sd card using CWM recovery; even though it supposedly has been fixed, it still may brick your phone (I personally dont believe you should have to partition an SD card ever!).
If the 2.37 method of the rooting doesnt take, you're in my boat with an unrootable device. You might as well see if you can update to the latest 2.5X build if your phone isnt carrier specific (using an ruu, and the device's data that cannot be synced with a google account or sense will be gone, but atleast you'll have the latest build)
If you do manage to Downgrade, dont use the post-downgrade rooting method, rather, follow my steps to root, radio s-off and eng s-off
Its a collection of what works, simplified for use without extras.

I don't have the experience to know if this is possible, which is why I ask because I'm curious. I post here because I want devs to see it, and think "that could work" or "idiot"
As we know the defy bootloader will probably never be unlocked, now I was thinking would it not be possible to somehow isolate the bootloader from a rom, and run some kind of virtual one in a seperate partition to run a fully custom kernel? It's probably crazy but I'm dying to know what people think, don't be too hard on me I have no coding experience :/ however all opinions are welcome I think anything is possible
Sent from the real world by hacking into the matrix
I don't want that this will become another dead Bootloader-Hacking-Thread but I want to give you an answer with the facts:
1) There currently is no known way to execute code before booting the kernel because everything is well protected though signing code.
2) The only way to boot a kernel after kernel-boot are tools like kexec or 2ndboot. But a phone's RIL is a heavy stone on that way because it's not that easy to reinitialize this part of hardware and without RIL a phone is useless. The main-developers canceled this project due to this reason.
Other "non-phone"-devices with locked bootloader (like Sony's google-tv) are using this method without problems.
3) You can use kexec/2ndboot to load a full bootloader instead of an kernel only, too. But because we don't have the source we would have to reverse engineer it to disable the signature check of the kernel otherwise you would load another useless protected bootloader This was also an project but I don't think it's still alive...
Additional note: You can't directly flash a modified bootloader because our chipset has built-in OMAP3-security features. This means the CPU will only boot signed Code from NAND.
You can find many helpful information about this topic on this page:
http://and-developers.com/partitions:cdt#cdt_table_of_droid_x
Thanks that clarifies things quite a bit, however I mean loading not just a second kernel but a WHOLE bootloader that would handle the phones entire functions independently, or is it completely hardwired so its impossible for something to override it? (Sorry if you have already answered in the above). Another thing, has noone tried to compile custom fixed sbf? Maybe the bootloader could be replaced that way? In software almost anything done can be undone in some way, although perhaps this is the rare case where it isn't
Sent from the real world by hacking into the matrix
I edited my post to have everything at one place.
I hope this answers your questions.
The bootloader is like the bios in a pc (actually is part of the bios), it's what initializes the device and loads the rest of the code. to load it again or another one you had to reinitialize the device. the issue with the RIL is that when reset or restarted it "panics" and resets the whole device (I think, read it somewhere).
also the second unlocked bootloader that you want to load does not exist anyway.
it's better to just help the developers with bug reports and testing than daydream.
sorry mate!

Hello Everyone.
Good News for everyone. I have decided to maintain a help thread at HTC ONE M9 community in order to keep the threads for development/general section more clean and better organised. I have been noticing for a long time that whenever new users join, they still are not sure about the rules and thus mistakenly post in the wrong sections too often. If any senior member points it out to them, mostly it is either ignored or taken personally. Thus I have decided a combined help section would be very helpful to the community and the questions which are sometimes left unanswered and lost in question answer forums, that would not happen again for all of you.
I would be trying my best to personally answer all your questions and shall refer you to someone in case I feel someone else would be able to answer the same question in a more detailed way. Other users can feel free to answer as well if you think you can tackle the situation well and make sure while answering any question, you provide enough information to the users as well. You can easily link the users to posts if you think a question has been already answered.
REASONS I AM MAKING THIS
Lots of repetitive questions.
Same things told again and again
Threads remain clean
A simple reference to every important thread that you should visit in case you have a problem
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO
Read the rules here XDA RULES BEFORE YOU POST
Idea of this thread is to help and to be helped. So ask any question you have in mind related to S6, Android, or anything at all as long as it is related to your device directly or indirectly.
Make sure you are precise with your information
Be Detailed
Do not repeat the same thing again and again
Use search button to find if your question has been asked before. Do not repeat your question if it is answered before.
WHAT INFORMATION YOU MUST PROVIDE
1.Your bootloader status if applicable
2. Rom name with complete baseband/date/version
3. Kernel name
4. Any Mods you are using
5.If you are using Custom Rom, your flashing style i.e dirty/clean or you wiped anything else in specific
6. If you used any guide, link to the guide
7. Root status
8. Your exact problem
9. Any method you tried that failed
10.Any other detail you think would be necessary
Make sure you provide as much details as possible. Things like my phone won't turn on please help would not be of any help to you or to the person answering. So please make sure you provide as much detail so we know exactly what is your problem and thus guide you in the right direction.
A sample would be something like this
Device: HTC ONE M9
ROM name: CM 12 dated 10th May
ROM version and base: 3.99-RC2
Build number: CM_M9-userdebug 4.3 JLS36G
kernel version and its settings: 3.4.0-myspecial.kernel.plus [email protected] #193
Rooted
Sabertooth Mod
I can not use my WIFI. Although i tried flashing Wifi modules but it does not work.
I flashed CM over Stock firmware version X.X.X.X.Y.Z
ETC

Hey all, I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes. I'm running the HTC M9 with VZW. This is my first Android, so I haven't rooted/unlocked/anything yet. I'm not even sure if I want to for the time being, since I don't currently have the time to troubleshoot any problems that might arise. Anyway, on to my question:
From what I have read, it seems VZW made HTC disable the FM radio, or at least didn't ship with the FM radio app. 3rd party apps like NextRadio don't work. I went and found an .apk for what I thought was the current version, but it doesn't work (as soon as I open it it crashes).
Is there either a stock APK, or a 3rd party app that will allow me to use the FM radio tuner, without rooting it? If not, what steps would I need to take to be able to use said app?
Again, my apologies for my ignorance in such matters. I'm fairly good with computers and even have some knowledge of troubleshooting Android devices, but I know absolutely zero about rooting/flashing/etc.
Many thanks all!

Hello mate. You have chosen the correct forum.
I was comparing verizon HTC One M9 with International M9.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/vzw/...iceProdId=dev4120028&priceToggle=24#techspecs
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_m9-6891.php.
If you see the specs, you'd find that Verizon has not listed radio at all. If it is verizon that is blocking the radio, it can be used through a mod/ root or using another app However, if it has not got a radio antenna inside, I'm afraid no amount of apps or mods would work.
Try this app

I hope this is enough. If you still got question, quote me and I'd be happy to help you out.

I have a situation here ... I have quite massive battery drain from Google Play Services on my HTC One M9. I check with my gf Samsung Galaxy S6 and her G play services were about 1%. My were almost 50%... The only difference is I use LG G Watch R paired to my phone but I tried disconnecting it and still same... I use Google Fit and also tried disabling it but not much of a difference. There was about 10% less of drain when I put my location on battery save. But it is still over the ruff with that drain. My device is not rooted so I can't check battery wakes ... I kinda don't know what to do any more. Has any one had problem like this and how did you solve it?
I am thankful for any responses or ideas. (Sorry for bad English)

Go into Google play and uninstall updates. Do the same for google play services. Turn off google location services and keep location on low battery use (GPS only)
Read this guide as you'd be updating your apps manually. Make sure you note down version of google play services /google play. In case a new update comes, you can try and see if battery drain is fixed.

Actually it depends what you like to do with your phone. Do you root it as well or not.
I always like to root all my devices. Therefore, Titanium Backup is an app I can not live without.
SuperSu pro paid version is worth it for I like to support the developer who puts so much effort.
Mx Player Pro is also great for movies. BS Player is something I would recommend as well. I use both of them for videos
Next is Moon+Reader which is also great for reading books (PDF, EPUB, MOBI and lots of other files supported)
It is also wise to invest in OfficeSuite. It is also worth it.
CamScanner Pro is also worth it as you can scan documents from your phone!
I also like SD Maid Pro (root) to clear up cache / unused files.
Then , there are lots of games to play.
If you can tell me what kind of apps you are interested in, maybe I can shed some more light

Hey all, I got a few questions regarding installing a custom ROM
I just unlocked, flashed a custom recovery (TWRMP) and flash superuser.
1. Can't make a nandroid backup of the stock ROM, sais the backup size is 0 bytes, is this normal?
2. can't get into recovery the old fashion way (power + volume down), instead I use ADB. I fear when I try to flash and I get into bootloop for w/e reason, I can't get into recovery at all. How can I solve this?
3. is there a no sense ROM somewhere out there?
4. What is AROMA? is it a custom recovery?
thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum. Find all the guides in this forum in second post and I suggest you look at the first few posts as well.
1. No, 0 bytes is not normal at all
2. Sometimes, the normal keys do not work because a proper exploit has not been found till date and thus, they are using a work around for that. Give it time, a developer will soon come up with a proper fix.
3. yes, all roms based on AOSP and CM would be without HTC sense. Check in the development section of this device to see if there has been development. As for now, there have not been any but I am sure many would come up pretty soon. As a general rule, all roms based on stock usually come with Sense, while all custom roms based on CM/AOSP or themselves are Sense Free.
4. AROMA is basically a smart way to flash any recovery/kernel/ rom. Usually in Aroma, small details can be chosen to your likings (In case of kernel, you can select, its governors, mods, processor and GPU clockspeed, etc). So Aroma gives more choice over normal flash.

Here is a guide for all errors regarding Playstore. See if any of these help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2733038
Are you using some kind of add blocker or apps which hack playstore ?
Have you tried downloading via data /another wifi.
I also suggest if you are rooted, go to device/etc and delete "hosts file" if clearing cache and data is not helping.
Sometimes removing your account and clearing data/cache and relogging in helps.

Hi!
I searched well but didn't found any information about this.
I want to unlock bootloader and S-OFF, but WITHOUT using HTCDev at all. I don't want that any info goes to them. Is there a method to do it at home without searching for people with "programmators" or "javacards"?
Do you know where the location of the screen off animation is please?
I don't mean the boot / shut down animation, i mean the animation which occurs when we lock the device, it used to be the CRT animation but it's been removed, what we have now is a fade animation, on the S6 this has been modified, i'd like to do the same with our M9's but i'm not sure of the location.
Cheers,

Hi!
I searched well but didn't found any information about this.
I want to unlock bootloader and S-OFF, but WITHOUT using HTCDev at all. I don't want that any info goes to them. Is there a method to do it at home without searching for people with "programmators" or "javacards"?

Well, actually unless a developer finds an exploit to S-OFF a device/ unlock bootloader without HTCDev, I do not think there is a way to do that. Currently I am not sure of any developer working on it and I am not much hopeful that someone would when it is already available officially.
In my experience, I have been using android for a long time now from 2009, unlocking a device does not make any difference . Every device I bought, I unlocked it using official tools provided by manufacturer and never regretted it.
Also, usually it is in terms that your warranty could be voided, however, usually first time you mess up your phone and take it for support, they warn you and reinstall the software for you. And mostly they do not give much damn about it. (That's how it happens in the UK)

Actually I am not sure where it is exactly either. However, it could be that they have integrated in SystemUI or made an apk for individual effect.
If you are rooted, install any app by which you can see system apps, and look for any app that shows animation/effect/fade etc.
See if that helps, however , if it does not, I will research for you and get back but make sure you quote me ! Or you can use xposed to manually find/change the effect.

Cheers mate, i've actually went and installed an xposed module which enables this, i was trying to avoid that as I think xposed is a little heavy and is still an alpha build.
Will keep looking as i'd like to mod this myself without xposed.
PS: Haven't got any thanks left but will get you tomorrow cheers.

Don't mention it mate. No trouble.
Glad I could be of help.
Ive see ROMs showing they need or require me to be on a certain firmware before using that ROM. How do I update the firmware? I thought that came with the ROM, as part of it. Some are requiring firmware I don't even see posted yet. If i were to install a firmware, will that change or wipe the current ROM? Also some require me to be s-off. I think, if read right, I need the $25 app to s-off? Correct? What is the reason to s-off? I've been running ROMs that don't require it, seem to work fine.

honestly I am not sure of the $25 price for an app which is claiming to S off device.
If it is sunshine S off, I approve, else it could be a scam or the real thing.
I succesffully download the sunshine app for free but i didnot run it on my android so I am not sure!
There are few links you must see, how to unlock S for your device.

As far as upgrading your STOCK ROM is concerned, Look at this guide. There are also some unofficial ways
http://www.htc.com/uk/support/htc-one-m9/howto/602178.html
S off is basically a lock on your device which prevents flashing custom Roms and modification to your device via scripts.
Quote me back if you still have a question

The Sunshine app is developed by a several XDA recognized developers. Read about it in the official thread. At the website they set up, they offer some information about themselves as well as some answers to frequently asked questions.
I haven't been around this device to speak knowledgeably about it's related hacks, but this seems legitimate.
Hi guys,
Got an M9 that updated to Nougat as soon as i laid hands on it. I have very few experience with the HTC world, and would like some information where should i head after here.
I'll definitely need root and am familiar with flashing through fastboot and unlocking through the HTC DEV Token.
I am also aware that a few flashing methods dont work with an unlocked bootloader, so currently i dont want to rush right there.
What is absolutely a myth to me, is S-OFF. Never managed to reach it in any device, and the way of getting it seems a bit unfair (sorry if it doesn't agree with anyone's views).
So this is what i have.
Status: LOCKED and S-ON
ROM: 7.0
Software: 4.16.166.1
Build: CL839204
CID: VODAP110
Baseband: 01.01_U114401011_117.00.61117G_2_F
Has Download mode available.
Thanks in advance.
Sad, sad to have found out that on XDA, barely any helper comes around the Help threads.
And even sadder to the fact that a certain feature to give control over the device have been monopolised in OEM fashion, adding a certain fee too.
The loop of options:
YOU CAN ONLY:
Unlock the device officially, temper with custom roms and recoveries.
The moment you want the benefits of a newer release (baseband, etc), one needs to relock back, that means backing up, go through wiping and locking and back.
YOU CANT:
Certain features that depend on S-OFF. From changing phones origin to updating without bothering locking or not.
Long story short, you cant do anything useful without reaching the pocket.
This concludes as my last HTC phone ever.

I can only speak for myself but I'm not online 24/7. I answer if and when I have time for answering. Then you need to be aware that the M9 forum never was that active and the user base is even decreasing since the phone is already older than two years. If you expect fast replies, then a not so active device forum is definetely the wrong place for asking a question.
Aside from that, there's the ReadMe thread that got pinned at the top of the General and the Q&A section. It contains all answers to your questions. After all the time that I'm maintaining that thread I still don't understand why people prefer creating a new Q&A thread instead of reading what already got written.

Please, not that discussion, again. S-OFF is absolutely not needed for using this phone. It's optional.

Incorrect. If you had read the ReadMe thread you would know that relocking is absolutely not needed (and even not recommended). Not to forget that this phone is EOL. If you update to the latest version before starting to tinker you will never have to deal with this "problem" of getting back to stock. Aside from that, it was Google that introduced the block-based OTAs with android 5, not HTC. You'll face the same "problem" with every phone that gets shipped with android 5 or newer.

Not sure how you define useful but rooting and installing custom roms is working fine without S-OFF. Most M9 owners have never heard of xda, rooting or custom roms and the majority of the rest doesn't need more than what they already can achieve with S-ON. (The part with the locking already got corrected above.)

Obviously, i have the same experience on a few Samsung threads, very understandable, although rare does someone have such enthusiastic reply for something positive. But anyway, i'll throw a thanks as i am not here for cynicism or arrogance.

Very well noticed.
Regarding S-OFF, i "just" need it, and was very much disappointed with the solution.
So now that the Z2 is out and being worked over I have a question that'll apply specifically to those of us who are still running the first gen Z Force. Is flashing the firmware from the Z2 Force able to be done onto the first gen Z Force? I was talking with some friends about doing some phone mods and this actual question was raised. Due to there being some differences right off the bat is this a feasible thing to try and do. My phone already did another forced update and is now 8.0, but if it's possible to change the phones firmware to the newer version that can be rooted would be great. I'm still learning as I go and hope I posed this correctly.
You should never attempt to flash firmware for one device onto another type of device. You're asking for a one way ticket to brick city by doing so. There are major differences between the two devices that make the software for one incompatible for the other.

Firmware runs the hardware abstraction layer. I.E. let's the software know how to send information across the chips. We have different CPU/GPU/screen/etc. It won't work if it even does flash.
Short answer: no, sorry.
Long answer: There's some ambiguity to what you refer to when you say firmware, because it can apply to many things in the boot stack, but it doesn't matter. If you could get it to flash, it wouldn't run, and if you could get it to run, it almost certainly wouldn't help you root unlock.
If you're interested in the subject and the distinctions between the different things you can call firmware, here is an elevator ramble about their functions (for OP and anyone new to the scene):
Check out this graphic here for a non comprehensive overview of what's what, what's called what, where whats sit in the boot stack and most importantly, what is firmware. If we're being so so so so so technical, The Firmware is the ROM on your snapdragon's die, who's only real job that we care about right now is to start the SBL, which is where things really get going. This firmware is called the PBL (primary bootloader) and is - quite literally - set in stone, ingrained into the die on your SoC (cpu/gpu/modem) It's pretty lax on security and once it's done its job, it hands over the responsibilities of "being firmware" to other items in the stack. Often, people casually talk about firmware to refer to anything kernel level downward, but I find this vague and hard to understand when you're getting started. OEMs like to refer to the entire stack as the device's firmware. You could make a good argument that the android/application bootloader (aboot) is the firmware since it's verifying the integrity of your boot image, manages fastboot, and is generally responsible for booting android in the first place (when you go from major android versions, like 7 -> 8, aboot generally gets an update too, and usually makes old roms not boot anymore). It's what you unlock when you "bootloader unlock" your phone. Aboot is signed, and verified by the SBL.
You push the power button -> hardware turns on, PBL runs -> PBL loads the SBL -> SBL loads aboot -> aboot loads the boot.img or recovery.img -> the boot image contains a kernel and a method to load important things into ram (like, android).
This varies by manufacturer, but most of them are variations on this process (except devices with intel processors, which are hilarious).
Thank you for the information on the primary question I posted, and for the ancillary too. I'm learning more each day and the posters here, all of you, are helping me more than you may know.
I don't know how long it's going to take me to even be close enough in knowledge on these phones as any of you are, but I am enjoying the journey.
Thank you again for the info and the continued education.
