Believe it or not those ugly arrow keys that come with our stock evo's keyboard could finally come in handy!!
As some of you may know, adobe's mobile flash only works with games with touch input, and not keyboard input (i believe).
I'm trying to find an efficient and non-obtrusive way to fix that!
Here's what I figured. We managed to chop the arrows out of the original keyboard, leaving us with a stock keyboard minus the arrows.
So what if we did the reverse and then added a couple keys for extra functionality such as enter/return and maybe a few customizable keys such as AB & XY.
See the image below for a thrown-together-in-few-minutes example (imagine without the purple hue and obviously better fitting)

Optimally it would also be transparent (to a degree set in the keyboard preferences).
Though 85-90% opacity oughta do just fine.
A button to quickly switch from arrow keys to WASD would also be nice.
I was thinking a long-press on the keyboard retraction button would be nice and not space-consuming.
I know this is possible, but I hardly have the time or resources to make it a reality.
Thoughts? Flames?
Let's hear em!

I don't get it. How would a soft keyboard with just the arrow keys solve that problem?
Incidentally, AIR for Android (the "Flash as .apk" solution) does allow soft keyboard input, so presumably keyboard support will be added to a future Flash Player release or patch.
In that case, this would be a great idea for phones like the EVO without a D-pad to interact with flash games. Hell, why stop with the SENSE UI hack? Make it look like an SNES controller while you're at it!
great idea
We need this. But I want it for a different reason.
I want it for those small links on web pages. I know its a big screen but sometimes I can't touch where I want.
So if it could have the arrows and maybe an enter button too that would also work on the web pages like a virtual trackball

It solves the problem because most games use the arrow keys or WASD as the controls.
Try playing this game on your phone.

But wait, I can't move anywhere!
It's possible to use the controls to move, for example on the original droid you can use the hardware keys.
For some reason the sense keyboard doesn't work, but it can be made to work if the browser believes the input is coming from hardware keys.
The point is, I highly doubt adobe is gonna make us a specialized soft keyboard that only has what's needed for gameplay and nothing more.
Our current keyboards are too big and would cover the screen, which is why we need something that isn't obtrusive and is transparent so we can see everything behind it.

I have a few onscreen keyboard problems. I was trying to find a better onscreen keyboard. I tried 2 different types of HTC Touch keyboards, one was a "20" key and the other a "12" key. I didn't like either one of them, because they messed up my hardware keyboard on my Hermes/8525. The "XT9" and "abc" would keep running, and would affect any key presses on my hardware KB.
I eventually found PCMKeyboardEN and love it. I uninstalled the 2 Touch KB's and they were completely removed from my PC except for the KB choices popup. So here are my 3 questions.
1. How can I remove the "Touch Keyboard" & "Touch Keypad" from the keyboard choice options popup at the bottom of the screen?
2. While I'm at it, how can i remove the "Block Recognizer" and/or "Letter Recognizer" (I want to keep one, but havent decided which one.
3. Where can I get a "Black Normal Keyboard"? I tried about 5 different ROMs this week. I believe Schaps 4.31 had this Black Keyboard, that was way nicer then the plain white one. Where can I get that black keyboard? I searched all over but couldn't find it.

Thanks so much, both CABs are very useful and I will keep them for the future. I did try some serious searching and found some other "black keyboards" but not this one. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any info about removing keyboards easily. Thanks for taking the time to post a reply.
I am trying to search, but I'm a newcomer here and it's very hard to find some answers...
1) Is it safe to use pockettweak on Polaris? (WM6, original ROM)
2) Will this remove selected SIPs form memory after reboot?
I would like to use PhonePad and PCMkeyboard, but as I have some quite complex SPB stuff in the Today screen, I am not able to use both of those SIPs - only one can be selected and working, but if I select the other one, the default keyboard appears instead. I will NEVER use the the block and letter recognizers, so I would like to uninstall them and free the RAM, but because they are parts of original ROM, they are not in the Remove Programs control panel and I dont know other way to get rid of them.
Thank you very mach for answers!
First off I appologize if this is in the wrong section but I didn't know where to start this thread as both the Topaz and Rhodium have a similar zoom bar above the hard keys, there may be other devices too so it would be great if we could develop such an application to work on all these devices which feature a pretty useless zoombar.
I used to own a Touch Pro (Raphael) and evolved to a new Touch Pro2 (Rhodium), the one thing I miss the most (besides the camera LED) is the D-Pad and Enter button.... when the phone is in portrait mode.
I think this image describes my idea pretty well:

I have no programming skills so I am seeking the great help of all the developers here on XDA. I hope some of you like my idea and post comments and hopefully someone will try and develop this for us to use.
It should have 5 main functions, slide Left, slide Right, tap Up, tap Down, & tap Enter.
What do you think?
im in the same boat, id love to see this come to life.
for the HTC Diamond its possible so it must be possible on this to !!
i'm all for it! i still cant understand the idea that htc had to remove the dpad! :S
anyone working on this?
while i get a touch diamond 2 for chrismas and my father owning a rhodium, we both would be amazed by this mod!

i moved from the ppc 6700 apache witht ehexcelent joystick my wife had the mogul and now the touch pro with the dpad. I have the tp2 rhodium and that and the flash are the things i miss most. i actuaqlly did not want to upgrade from the apache to the tp2because the lack of the joystick. for a while itried everything and have given up and just got used to it the way it is. I still miss the one handed contro for reading articles on the web and making phone calls as well moving the cursor to where i wanted it. I sometimes am forced to open the keyboard and use the arrow keys. I used the rhodium keyboard control to assign the up down volume control and the power button as well as the mute button on the back but did not end up using it. i had tap double tap triple tap and press and hold. i tried the actual dpad on the screen but that didnt work for me. the other one that use the zoom control i didnt like becasue you had to slide this one looks much better and looks like it might work. i would be willing to donate to a developer who can make it happen
I don't know is it an issue only I have, or maybe it's a well-know problem that Touch Pro2 users have to deal with but whenever I hit the lowest, middle part of the screen, the Keyboard's Options pop-up, although there's no icon to click. The on-screen keyboard on the other hand never pop's-up by itself, so the issue only regards the Option's box.

I find this highly irritating, 'cause it happens EVERYWHERE: when I try to hit OK in G-Alarm; when I'm not too precise with the Sense slider or - and this is extremely irritating - when I play games designed for Portrait mode (the upper screen was taken while playing "The Simpsons Arcade"). Portrait mode games are just unplayable (hence the controls are often in the lower screen parts).
I don't really use the options box. If I ever use the on-screen keyboard (which isn't often) I have it always set to Phone Keyboard when in Portrait, and to Full Qwerty in Landscape. I never change those options so if it's possible to disable the Option's box all together that'll be just fine.
I'm not sure is it relevant, but I use an official ROM upgrade to Sense 2.1
Oh come on! I'm sure someone can help. Please? This is a truly irritating bug.
dude, i've never had this happen unless the keyboard icon was present in the middle. sure, if i hit a little weird (which technically I think is to the right of the icon (?)) that screen pops up..
I have no idea why its happening, but since no one has replied, I wonder if it is a glitch or bug w/ just what you got..? have you tried any other roms or resetting to factory default?
Not yet - I'd hate to reinstall all my applications, set them all over again and tweak the phone from scratch (I know I can do a backup but if I would decide to install a new ROM I would switch from the official upgrade (Sense 2.1 with WM6.5) to a cooked 2.5 and the backup wouldn't work).
I don't really fell like doing that just to fix one minor problem.
It's like with bugs on Windows PC - people usually let you to format your disc and install the OS again, but I'm always able to fix any issues I have without formating the device (I haven't done that in a year).
But I'm not that good with Windows Mobile, so I'm asking for your help, oh mighty ones
I'm sure it's something that could be fixed within the registry of with Total Commander - I just don't know how to find the bug myself.
Maybe someone could post his/hers setting from the registry (from directions that have something to do with the on-screen keyboard) so I could compare them with my reg keys?
I am planning to get a Bluetooth keyboard to go with my SGS2, and I found this rather little thing on eBay:

Does anyone of you guys have any experience with it, and whether it will work with the SGS2?
Thank you,
//Steria
Works on the S II but it's absolutely horrible. Rubber buttons that are way worse to type on than the touchscreen
But does it work well? Like, can you type fast on it like a physical computer keyboard?
Do you have any other recommendations when it comes to Bluetooth keyboards?
Thank you.
As I said, it's absolutely horrible. You'll type faster on the screen keyboard
I got the same one. Absolutely couldn't get it to work with my SGS2 on any Gingerbread ROM. The bluetooth stack on GB just doesn't work with it, and I tried all the apps on the market.
Works fine with ICS, but as Cptnodegard says, it is pretty difficult to type on as the keys have to squished in hard. I think it would drive you bonkers.
Might be good for gaming...
WS
I've used a similar mini keyboard on my SGS2 (GB 2.3.5 on KI3 ROM); it seemed to work OK. It's not an especially good keyboard, but it gets the job done. I've also used the Freedom Universal Keyboard (folding laptop-sized keyboard); it works pretty well.
apart from the look&feel (you like it or hate it, but it seldom leaves you unfazed), I've tried to use it under various flavors of GB roms : no go (unless you invest 10€ in a third-party app which I won't advertise here)... Exception : CM7-based roms, because they pack a real BT stack instead of this 'crippleware' stack found on stock rooms...
Under ICS/CM9 and derivatives : works like a charm, except that I have to remap the QWERTY layout that's default for Android to a AZERTY one which is the layout of the keyboard. A few keys won't work, but it's probably a matter of time until I find how to remap those.
Is it fast to type on it ? Not really... a lot of times I find that I'm twice as fast using the regular Android keyboard.
I mostly use it as a remote for, the phone (once you know the location and key combo to use as directional pad and the Escape key, navigating thru the menus is way faster.. It's especially nifty when you have a huge applist on the market like me (850+), scrolling down the applist is a breeze, it's like 3-5 times faster than scrolling by swiping (or even with firecrackers)
While I haven't tried one myself, I hear that the Sony PS3 sixaxis controller add-on keyboard is pretty nice to type on. Nice, solid buttons instead of that rubber garbage. A bit of a weird shape but still
I am looking to get a keyboard to type fast on (on a table, w/ my fingers - not just thumbs)) like in a meeting room setting or a lecture setting. If this keyboard does not meet these requirements, what other low-cost, handy-sized keyboards do?

Definitely better than the rubber keyboard this thread was started for
I was wondering if anyone could recommend to me a better keyboard replacement for the G4? Things I would like it to have;
Theme-able (Not really a big deal, just nice to have options)
Arrow Keys (My #1 Feature)
Dedicated Number Keys (would be nice, but not a deal breaker)
...That is pretty much it, just really want to have the arrow keys for easier text corrections.
SwiftKey ... No matter what other keyboards I try I always come back to SwiftKey. (and it has everything on your list (and then some) )
Few screen shots for ya

For me, nothing beats Kii. Unfortunately it's no longer available through the app store.
It's all about fleksy!!!! Fastest keyboard in the world, Guinness world record breaker and as well very simple and straightforward
I swear by SwiftKey. No keyboard is perfect, but all of SwiftKey's pros far outweigh any con.
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
SwiftKey for sure!
I like the Google keyboard. Used to be an avid Swiftkey user as well. There are so many you have a ton of options
Just downloaded Fleksy. I was in the bets trial but it seems to have improved a bit. The auto suggest is kinda funky. I am an IT network engineer and throw around lots of acronyms that it doesn't catch. I like the stock android/LG keyboard style where a backspace will revert the autocorrect. Most keyboard apps do not do this (thumbs plus does but I get lots of double letters).
I'll give it a week and see how I like it. The smart punctuation is driving me crazy though.
SwiftKey best keyboard alternative ever!
..Sent from an impeccable LG G4 on Verizon..
100% SwiftKey
Yeah. Has to be SwiftKey for me too. Tried a few others but always come back to it. Very customisable.
Cheers.
Eoin.
Let's throw Swype in here as well My fave keyboard by far :good:
The one thing about Kii that I really can't live without is the customizable auto-change feature in the dictionary, where you can set it to change whatever to whatever. For example, mine is programmed to change "y" to "why", "c" to "see", "r" to "are", "brb" to "be right back", "addr" to my full address, etc. etc. etc. I must have 50-60 shortcuts programmed, easily. Makes for wicked fast typing when you can use all those shortcuts
Well after all the votes for Swiftkey I opted to grab it (and much to my surprise I had already had it before, lol. Must've been on one of my old school HTC devices). Needless to say I am very happy with it as it offers everything I was looking for and then a little bit extra on top.
Thanks for the info guys/gals, I do REALLY appreciate it.
For years I used Smart Keyboard Pro: themeable, shortcuts (as per above), customizable, etc. One of the best features I liked the most is being able to slide/swipe/flick your finger left or right to move the cursor. Not sure how that is not cooked into the stock keyboard as it is such a useful feature.
Is there a way to add the numeric keys to the google keyboard?
