update 18-may dualizer major update: full toolkit(beta)!

major update here, the dualizer has become a feature rich toolkit for dualbooting. this includes a modified version of amon ra's recovery image. you need it to use the dualizer toolkit, it is included and can be flashed with one command.
it is a beta version for now. i have tested each option, but i cannot foresee all conditions you might have on your phone... have a backup at all time! and don't forget to backup the stuff from your sdcard before installing dualboot, during the creation of this toolkit i accidently deleted everything on mine...
there is no logging at the moment, if you get any error messages please paste them here in full.
i haven't tried a nandroid backup at all yet, and wouldn't advice you to do it either. please use apps like titanium backup to backup your stuff. i will be looking into getting some kind of nandroid capability, but that is not a trivial topic. i can however imagine to have full pc-based backup capabilites, sometime in the future...
before you use any of the romX options make sure you have installed the dualboot environment, i have no idea what happens otherwise...
i have tried to include a full description, please let me know if something is unclear (i hope it is obvious that romX needs to be replaced with either rom1 or rom2):

usage: ./dualizer <option>
place the two roms you want to use for dualbooting in the
rom1 and rom2 subdirectories. make sure directories do
contain other files. you can use the temp/ subdir of the
two rom folders to store your roms while you want to flash
another update.zip
you need a modified version of Amon_Ra's custom recovery image.
it can be installed with this tool, see the options.
options are:
help show this information
vmsetup prepare ubuntu vm for usage
check-dev check if your device is properly attached and connected via adb
boot-rec reboot hero to currently flashed recovery
check-rec check if RA-hero-v1.6.2-DBmod is currently flashed
boot-dbmod put hero in fastboot mode (back+power) first!
fastboot hero with RA-hero-v1.6.2-DBmod
no permanent changes are done, works with unlocked spl only
NOTE: the trackball doesn't select, use green key instead
unlocked-spl copies update.zip for unlocked spl to sdcard, so you can flash it.
if this goes wrong it can brick your phone, make sure you do it right!
flash-dbmod flash RA-hero-v1.6.2-DBmod to recovery partition (permanently)
NOTE: the trackball doesn't select, use green key instead
install-db ALL your data will be lost, so you better have a backup!
install dualboot environment on htc hero
this includes partitioning of the sdcard
place roms in folders rom1 and rom2 first!
romX wipedata wipe data/factory reset romX
romX wipedalvik wipe dalvik-cache for romX
for the following options place update.zip file in folder romX first!
romX flash flashes update.zip from folder romX
romX makeboot create boot.img-update.zip files for romX
romX makeboot push create boot.img-update.zip files for romX and push it to /sdcard
i don't see any potential to brick your phone, even if it fails, as the critical parts (spl, radio) are not touched at all. worst that could happen is that you have to do a full wipe and flash a rom... be careful while flashing recovery and/or bootloader though!
as always: use at own risk!
note: first (and maybe second) boot maybe painfully slow. after that it gets better, see for yourself if it is too slow for you. i have been using villainrom and slidevillain in a dualboot for a few days now, i haven't noticed too much slowdown. then again i don't care too much about this.

- rightclick the zipfile you just downloaded and select "Extract Here"
- open a terminal window: goto Applications, Accessoires, Terminal

it will ask for your password once, then do some stuff and finally reboot the virtual machine.
once rebooted, connect your hero to your pc, rightclick on the usb sign in the lower right corner of the virtual machine window and select the "HTC Android Phone". some hardware installations from windows might pop up (happened to me), just click on next and let them do their stuff. if it doesn't work at first shut down ubuntu, then restart your pc and continue. "reboot tut gut", as the german likes to say
back to ubuntu, with your hero connected to pc and virtualbox, open a terminal and check if your hero is detected by adb with the following commands:

Holy... this is incredible. Great job on getting this out.

I use a virtual box and ubuntu 10.04 lts.The method seems to work but in step 3 on partition card my hero restarts and boots in recovery and i don't have time to mount the usb/htc device into virtual box so i get in step 5 an no device found error.The time is very short.I have to press USB-MS toggle on my hero and after that i have to mount it in virtual box.I've tried it over 20 times but i don't have time and in terminal get me the error.Is there a way to pause the process or a solution to my problem?

EDIT:SOLVED.Set the sleep from dualizer in step3 from 15 to 30.Wainting for setup to finish.Cross my fingers
EDIT2: Ok now this is getting awkward.Waiting on step 4 (push to sd) for 25 minutes now.I have checked the log.Last line says mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 on /sdcard failed: No such file or directory.Should I wait for it any longer?Or what should I do now?

that shouldn't happen, and the pushing shouldn't take longer than a few minutes. you should cancel it by pressing ctrl-c, if you fancy debugging then check why it wouldn't mount. otherwise you can partition your sdcard, do a full wipe and should be able to flash a regular rom.
i guess i underestimated the complexity of the virtual machine solution, gotta look deeper into this... *sigh*

Hi, regarding the Apps2SD issue... Would it ever be possible for the two ROMs that are dual booting to have the same apps sourced from one place... if that makes any sense...
Like in windows... you can "install for all users" so if you log off and someone else logs in with there account the very same apps are there...
Ok bad analogy since we are talking about dual booting different versions like (Vista & Windows 7) ... but the same data on hdd is accessible...
is this possible with the dual booting scenario?
If I had Slide Villain and Villain 5.5 .. both being 2.1 ROMs which would make app compatibility a non-issue...
If I booted up Villain 5.5 and made changes to an app / save data .. could this not be accessible with the slide rom.. I would hate having to install the very same apps on another partition..worst of all if you have save data (such as a game) and wanted to play it on one of the ROMs your game progress would be different?
you could just use Titanium to transfer over the data but agaqin it is a long procedure.
It would be fantastic if we could mirror image exactly what we have on our main Roms to our "secondary roms" ...

Yeah this is really amazing. I have read this on villainRom forum, and i was stupified .
But, if i want to flash another Rom as primary and need to wipe cache, i need to do this process again! Am i right?

for the shared apps:
a shared apps2sd directoy/partition is possible, although you'd have the problem that apps are installed to one market only, and idk what would happen when you update an app in one rom, would the update get market-linked in the other? you can solve this with titanium backup, but it isn't really comfortable at all. i'll think about this.
for shared data: in theory possible as well, but i don't think it would work out well. you cannot distinguish between system data and apps data that easily, and i don't think it would work to share system data (sense settings etc) between two different roms...
@masterxiter: easiest way to do this is to use the installer script again. you can wipe the cache manually, installing another rom would be really complicated (about as complicated as the installer script )...

Sweet. But is there any way i can run this in cygwin? every version of linux ive tried so far doesnt support my crap compaq wifi card or most things, or even wired for that matter, and running ubuntu in a virtual machine gives a reboot every time after step 1 (maybe cos i suck at terminal)

i'll try some time, but i have never used cygwin... so don't expect anything too soon.

if you install ubuntu in an virtual machine like VMware(paid) or virtualbox(free) you can just use linux, it will automatically grab all your internet settings and stuff from the windows installation(main computer) so your windows will be like some kind of router for your virtual machine with everyhing working.
Very nice tutorial, i'm not going to try it.. because my phone has to be resend to HTC for fixing some dead pixels, there just messers with screens
BTW. you can also try another linux version sounds crazy, maybe try backtrack?? the only thing you need is linux, backtrack is..

I have backtrack 4 (I could never get wifi on that either, but tbh i couldnt work out how to try (that distro is soo confusing imo). I got backtrack 3 to work a while back, so if i can find the disk im gnna try that.
Also virtualbox didnt put my internet settings at all (maybe co im on win7 ultimate?)

He means that you need to have Java, perl and zip installed and configured on your Linux system. If you dont have that installed and configured correctly than the install script wont be able to run.

oh noes.. .i do not have those in my ubuntu, does that mean i cant do a dual boot? btw, i saw post 2 and post 3 ... are they the same instruction ? or different? (one for windows user and one for linux?)

How to root and flash a new ROM the easy way?

Is there any guide or instructions how to root and flash the Desire with a new custom ROM?
Im so confused right now, rooted my Hero and flashed it dozen times but now its different with Desire. Plz someone help?

I think you have to.
I've done it with a goldcard, have also a unclocked device.

Unbranded devices generally don't need gold cards.

Yep totally correct! If the handset was unbranded when new then no goldcard is needed. I didn't need one on mine.

So practicly what i have to do is this:
if you have a bootloader version 0.80.xxxx or below AND a current ROM of 1.21.xxx.x or below -
Part 1
Part 2
*- Copy the 'rooted update' you downloaded above to the root of your SD card, before replacing it into your device
*- Turn off your HTC desire, then turn it back on with the 'back' button held down. You'll see 'FASTBOOT' written on the screen in a red box.
*- Connect the phone to your computer, then run the 'test ruu' that you downloaded above (it may take a short while to start). Let the update complete and turn your device off as soon as it reaches the configuration wizard. If you need USB drivers, you can find them as part of the HTC Sync install.
*- Your device should now be off. Unplug the device from your computer. Turn it on again while holding down the 'volume down' button this time. The screen will look similar to before, but will say 'HBOOT' instead of 'FASTBOOT'. Use the volume buttons and the power button to select the 'RECOVERY' option. You should then see a screen with a red triangle - at this point, plug it into your Linux or OSX computer.
*- Now you need to unzip the 'push files' zip that you downloaded above. When you have done so, you'll see a file called 'recovery-linux.sh' or 'recovery-mac.sh'. Run the one appropriate to your operating system and the screen of your device should change to display the green recovery image menu.
*- In the recovery image (moving around using the optical trackball), select 'Wipe -> Wipe data /factory reset' then 'Flash zip from sdcard' and choose the rooted update. Confirm with the trackball and the update process will begin. It'll take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea.

All you need to do with this one is download the appropriate file, burn it to disc and type 4 commands in linux.

Or just use r5. The scripts are good and shouldn't cause any trouble. If you are on linux/mac you might need to change permissions on some files though.

Without a doubt that seems easy, i just wonder if i can do it the same way with Ubuntu 9.10 ? Its because i have a livecd with Ubuntu but no empty cd to burn on

That is the guide i read first, but now it seems there is a better solution with linux.

I'm not sure what newer method you mean?
At the end of the day, any of the methods posted here will work for you. The first one I pointed to with tiny core linux was for me the easiest.
Just give one of them a try and post back if you encounter any problems, if the worst happens and you make a mistake and cause the usb to be bricked, it can now be easilly fixed.
As far as I am aware there are no other issued you can run into if you follow the guides.

I know Ive had a Hero for about a year now

you dont need to use linux anymore there is a windows method
all you need is to download the pushfiles and extract them in the desire root files click on recovery windows.bat when you get to the triangle on the desire it will take you to the recovery options
also ur device has to be connected with usb and dont remove the usb when you updating the rom

That is the method to go to recovery after rooting. You still need to root first. Also, the windows method may be easier, but a lot of people are commenting on driver problems. The linux method is by far the least problematic.
Just my opinon of course!

i did not have any issue while rooting go to the hero section and use those drivers they worked fine for me

How to Flash Your Vogue - Linux Users

I take no responsibility if you brick your Vogue
Right now I thought that I should put something like this up so that my fellow Linux users can flash their Vogues without having to try and resort to using WINE or installing Windows, like I tried and failed
For this guide I am using Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat 10.10 so if things differ from your setup then I apologise.
Right on to the guide at hand.
1) Go to the following link and download HTCFlasher: Link
Now the it is a .deb file type so if you aren't using a Debain based Linux Distro then you can get the source code here and compile it from there
2) Now you also need the following file to get HTCFlasher to work properly: Link. Again this is a .deb file and I don't know if you can get the source for it or not but oh well.
3) Right, now that you have those two files you can now install them so to do this you need to go and launch the Terminal and do the following

cd Downloads (I'm assuming here that this is your default download directory)
sudo dpkg -i htcflasher_20080806-1_i386.deb
once you've done that enter your root password - you won't have to do it again
now for the gtkdialog - again do the same as above but with the gtkdialog

sudo dpkg -i gtkdialog_0.7.20-4_i386.deb
Right now after all that is all installed HTCFlasher will be able to be used properly now. Now on to the fun part, flashing your chosen ROM.
For this part I used NFSFAN's WM6.5 Custom ROM although you can use whatever ROM you want.
1) so once you have your ROM all nicely downloaded and un-RAR'd you need to to into Applications -> Accessories -> HTCFlasher
2) click on the little circle next to the option that says "Get Device Info", plug your Vogue in and click ok. Once it's done it's thing a new window will popup, close out of it and next to the Get Device info line will be soomething similar to this

3) Put your phone into bootloader mode by pressing and holding the power+camera button while pushing in the soft reset button with your stylus. This can be awkward to hold but just find your own way to get it done.
4) Now click on the "Flash NBH file" little circle and click ok. Navigate your way to where you extracted your rom, double click it and a little message will pop up saying flash file '/home/user name/Downloads/RUU_signed.nbh'?
Click ok and let it rip. Should only take a couple of minutes. Once the ROM has been flashed click ok on the popup and then you are back to the main HTCFlasher menu do the next step BUT MAKE SURE YOUR VOGUE IS STILL PLUGGED IN!
5) Right so you are back to the main menu, click on the little circle next to Bootloader cmd prompt and click ok. MAKE SURE YOUR VOGUE IS STILL PLUGGED IN OR THIS WILL NOT WORK!
6) Once the Cmd Prompt has opened which is basically instantly type the following code. Please note that when I write {enter} you press the enter key.

Now soft reset your phone and VIOLA!! You have just flashed your Vogue on Linux Give yourself a pat on the back and enjoy your shiney new ROM!
A big thanks goes to mrkite38 who gave me that last bit of code. Without his help my Vogue would still be in bootloader mode

But after using your gtkdialog link, everything worked out fine.

Yeah I had heaps of problems trying to kind the gtkdiag files needed as well until I used the magic that is Google haha, took about 30 mins of searching until I found that particular version that worked though.

[GUIDE] [HOW-TO] Root Your Droid Incredible 2 VIA HTC Bootloader Unlock

My other thread got screwed up. So, I just thought it would be easier to re-write it all over.
Some warnings:
-This is not a FULL unlock (S-OFF or to unlock your SIM card slot.)
-This WILL VOID your warranty.
-This will work with ANY version of HBOOT. Unless something has changed and I never update.........
-This is a how to for WINDOWS ONLY. Sorry Mac, Linux, and Unix. If someone knows how to do it VIA those ways, I'll add it in here.
-If you are logged out of HTC Dev at any time during the identifier period (1 - 5), just sign back in and don't click anything. It will automatically redirect you to the last page you were on.
-I am not responsible if you didn't follow a step correctly and your phone lights on fire, cracks into two, wants to destroy you, etc...

What you are going to need:
-A computer
-Fastboot and ADB [API] - [link] <-- These are applications I use to flash ROM's. They are in a .zip from me.
-HTC Drivers - [link] <-- Drivers HTC gives, couldn't find them on HTC's site.
-Android SDK - [link]
-microUSB cable, phone, and some time
STEPS TO ROOT: finally...
1.) You are going to want to head over to the HTC Dev[eloper] site ([link]) and make an account or sign in. Once you have done one of the two, you are going to want to click 'Unlock Bootloader,' then 'Get Started.' It will next ask you what device you are trying to unlock, click 'Droid Incredible 2 (Verizon)' then 'Begin Unlock Bootloader.' Then a pop up window will ask you if you are sure, just click 'Yes.' Then, another pop up window will appear, just tick the two boxes and press 'Proceed to Unlock Instructions.'
2.) Go to your phone. Take off the [back] battery door and remove the battery (don't hold the power button and make it a proper shut off, just rip the battery out. Then, put the battery back in. Once you have replaced the battery, hold the volume down button and the power button at the same time until a white screen shows up. You can use the volume rocker to highlight your selection, and the power button to select the highlighted selection. Right now, we want to highlight 'BOOTLOADER' and use the power button to select it. Next, grab your miniUSB cable and plug it into your computer to your phone.
3.) Next, make a folder on your computer in the C:\ Drive. In Windows Vista & 7, you can just go to Computer from the Start Menu and it will be labeled Local Disk (C:\). You can name the folder whatever you want, I am just going to name it Android. Next, you are going to want to download my ADB, Fastboot, and ADBAPI .zip file and place all three files into the Android folder. After you unzip the ADB/Fastboot folder, you are going to want to (if you have not already) download and install the Android SDK manager. You will need to install SDK tools [and I believe a version of Android?] After you have installed everything, you can go to the Start Menu again and type in 'cmd' in the search bar and press enter. Then type in the following: (Or you could take the easy way of going to your C:\ drive and shift-clicking the folder and press 'Open Command Window Here...)

4.) After you have got into Command Prompt and are in the \Android folder, type in the following:

fastboot oem get_identifier_token
You will then see a great big brick of random characters. Right click in the bottom right-hand corner of '<<<<< Identifier Token End >>>>>' and click 'Mark...' Hold down the left-mouse-button and select the great brick of text up until '<<<< Identifier Token Start >>>>' (don't highlight any of the 'INFO' things.) Then, right-click again and you will have the identifier token copied to your clipboard. Back on the HTC Dev site, it will ask you for your identifier; just paste the identifier in the box and it will send you an email with a .bin file (Unlock_code.bin) and just throw that into the folder with ADB and Fastboot.
5.) You are going to want to click the continue link that HTC Dev sent you as well to downloading the file. After you have finished downloading and put it in the folder, type in the following:

Once you have done that and pressed Enter, your phone will change screens. It will ask you if you are SURE you want to do this. Just press the volume rocker up and press the power button. Your phone will reboot and take you back to Android. It's normal and it doesn't mean it failed... Your phone is fine and it should have went OK if you followed the steps. We are done with HTC Dev now, so you can close it.
6.) Next thing we are going to want to do is flash ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery onto your phone. You are going to want to download the .iso for CWMR and flash it to your phone (download link [link].) After you are done downloading the .iso, place it into your ADB and Fastboot folder. Once your phone has finished starting up, take the battery out again and put it back into HBOOT mode (step 2.) You are going to want to go back into FASTBOOT (step 2, again) and flash the recovery by doing the following:

Once you press enter and fastboot says it has completed, it will just have the Fastboot screen. Just highlight 'Bootloader' and press the power button. Next, to make sure it worked... Scroll down to 'Recovery' (which is right under Fastboot) and select it. The HTC screen should show and then CWMR should come to life.
7.) This is where the real magic happens. We are going to install SuperUser on to your phone now. Reboot your phone into regular Android. Now, you can plug it into the computer and make it a disk drive or pop out the miniSD card and put it into a converter. Now, you are going to want to download SuperUser ([link] - make sure your scroll down to the .zip dowload) and put it onto the miniSD (I recommend not putting it in any folders so it is easy to find.) Now, put your phone back into CWMR (step 6.) Now, use the volume rocker to scroll down to 'install .zip from sd card' and press the power button. Now, find the SuperUser.zip (or whatever it is named) and press the power button. The 'yes' to install it is in the middle of all the 'no' options, use the volume rocker to select 'yes' and press the power button. Wait for CWMR to finish, and in the meantime... Just stare at your phone. After you have finished installing SuperUser, restart your handset into Android. Once it has finished restarting, go into the app drawer and find the SuperUser app. Press the 'menu' button and tap 'Settings.' Scroll down to 'Su Binary x.x.xx' and tap it. On the bottom it will say 'Update Binary,' just tap that and it will do its 'magic.' Once SU has finished updating Binary, you have a rooted DINC2.

thanks for your guide - I'm needing to get something fresh on my wife's DI2...and I'm not as savvy with the HTCs as I am with my GNex.
The problem I have initially run into is the JDK - I have it installed....but whenever I try to install the Android SDK, the installer tells me that it does not recognize an installed JDK...
Also, I did notice that your Fastbook & ADB link is not active - is it obsolete now?

Android SDK includes fastboot and adb, so it isn't necessary. Are you sure you have the JDK installed? What version? I know OpenJDK was giving me trouble so I had to switch to the official JDK.

Yep, just tried to reinstall 7u7 from the oracle site....no dice with SDK. Weird. I'll try with another PC to see if my laptop just licks

I added the ADB and Fastboot link, I thought it was already added... So, that is my fault. And like prototype said, Android SDK also includes ADB and Fastboot. Hope the best to your wife and the phone.

This isn't for a SIM CARD tray unlock. It's just to root you phone and get ROMS and SU apps on it. Look around for a SIM unlock.

1.) Yes, an .iso file is a disk image.
2.) I personally like to place it in the C:\ Drive, but people put it where ever they want to.
3.) Yes, just put that in the folder with Fastboot and ADB[API.]

Please fadtboot install as administrator in pc?

English equivalent: "fastboot" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
That's happening since you're still in the Administrator's directory - C:\Documents and Settings\Administrador\.
You need to use the "cd" command to change to the directory where you downloaded fastboot. Then you'll be able to use that command.

[Q] Can't get Revolutionary to run on Linux Mint on Virtualbox on Mac

HTC Desire running 4.1.2 CyanogenMod CM10 4.1.2 VJ
I've spent hours searching threads and waited for days just to get the chance to download a linux OS to install on my Virtualbox as I have a Mac that won't run Revolutionary. (I have no download allowance left on my broadband and now I'm stuck with the first Linux OS I got, which is Mint Cinnamon 14) + I have no access to Windows or a copy of.
I need to repartition my SD card as my phone started going into boot loops over the course of a few days and I had to keep popping the battery, but then the SD ext got totally corrupted after flashing Jellybean 4.1 and my trying to get a2sd to work.
I can still turn the phone on and use jellybean as my phone has the superuser app and was partically rooted with unrevoked, it's just the phone is not S OFF and I need that to be done in order to run the program I bought called Ext4 Recovered, as I'm stick of Gparted messing up my Mac's startup drive and auto booting as Gparted, and I liked the touch scren features of Ext 4 Recovered.
Ok so that's background.
I finally got Linux Mint to install and downloaded Revolutionary to its desktop. But it wouldn't unzip, so I right clicked, extracted the file and saw the program.exe but that won't open ethier. Followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192806 but that doesn't work i.e going in terminal.
It said following:

you did cd (change directory) to the path of where you extracted revolutionary right? Also, it shouldnt be an .exe so make sure that you downloaded the one for linux not windows.
Btw i just tried it using using Mint 14 and it opened fine.
Try downloading it again. heres the linux version: http://revolutionary.io/revolutionary-0.4pre4.tgz
Put it into your downloads folder, then right click and extract here
Open terminal and run: cd ~/Downloads
Then run: sudo ./revolutionary

Can't Run Revolutionary on Linux

So I charge in, all fired up with your advice thinking 'Yeah I can do this!' Download the link you pasted, extracted file to downloads folder, it is the same file as I had. Then Linux messes it all up!
I can't see any applications menu on my version. The bottom status bar has nothing. All I can do is navigate folders like desktop, pictures, I could get on Firefox but then the screen keeps going small and showing multiple desktops and I have to click the window I was working in again. RIght clicking on the Rev file and selecting terminal does not open terminal, I can't find a list of programs separately to open Terminal either. Then the whole thing stopped responding to be and crashed.
And to make it all the worse. I have to go horse riding with my other half's young nephew when it's snowing and I am am not a horse person who likes horse riding! I just want to stay in and fix my stupid phone!!! RANT RANT sorry btw.

You don't have any windows computer, or a friend with one?

loool. If your overall goal is to just make the sd-ext partition why not just use gparted?

Well I know I could and have before but I never have any luck with getting SD ext to accept my app's via A2SD and I am wondering if it's cos I'm not S OFF + as I say, I like the touch screen recovery UI of Ext4 Recovered and how easy it is to try ROM's out.
My goal is to have JellyBean running with app's moved to SD and enough memory to download all the app's I want. I haven't even got facebook or Google Maps at the mo and I'm missing them!

I may be able to get Windows actually. I'll see. Just can't upgrade my broadband allowance to try different Linux's as provider wants a new 18month contract to do so and I'm off to out the country for a few months soon so no point.
Meanwhile though if any uses Linux Mint 14 and knows how to get it to show the programs installed like Windows has in its start menu, I'd appreciate it.

in the bottom left corner there should be button labelled "menu" (similar to the windows start button)
Click on it>go to accessories>then click on terminal

Windows didn't work with the legit serial I had so I finally figured out Linus Mint 14 and could run the Revolutionary program but guess what??? I got the old

What do you mean by which ROM works with revolutionary?
Revolutionary doesn't install ROMs...it gives you s-off and a custom recovery.
What are you trying to do?
What have you done so far?

OK so I managed to find an old copy of Gingervillian 2.3 (F1-GB-V3-(ENG-A2SD)-Signed 2) and flashed that because Jellybean wasn't having it, with previous error.
Gingervillian runs fine. Checked I had USB debugging on and did a NAND backup. Downloaded the Superuser app from the rev.io website and put that on my root of my sd card ready.
Ran Rev.io on LINUX Mint in terminal, so don't need the fastboot drivers, as says is self contained and it just gets stuck at Zerging Root, may take a minute. Takes 10min and nothing, I just saw my hardward keys light up for a bit and go out. So I unplugged phone and pulled battery and restarted phone, which started fine.

I don't know what to do to get it to run right through. Been searching web but everyone uses Windows not Linux! I must be still missing something but I swear I get through one stage and I find another door!!

It could be your ROM. Maybe try flashing an ruu or something stock, then run revolutionary.

Thanks but the prob is I don't know what the RUU ROM's are and all the old one's I used to use when I first rooted my Desire in 2010 have had their links disabled. I only have Leedroid, Gingervillian and maybe Oxygen somewhere on my backups.
Does anyone know which ROM will work with Revoluntionary and of a link where I can still download the ROM? All the server sites I go on are full of pop up's and dead end's.
I really want to use my EXT4 touch Recovered app. But can't til I get S OFF.

Put it on the root of your SD card and don't rename it.
Then boot into hboot and wait a couple seconds, it will ask if u want to install so click yes.
That will completely restore the phone to official stock 2.3
Also i believe you must have stock hboot before you do this.

I can't make any gold cards or whatever. I wouldn't have a clue where to start and I don't have windows.

I deleted the corrupted ext 3 or 4 partition and recreated it, leaving the FAT 32 portion untouched. Am just flashing JellyBean back on to see if the script for a2sd can use the Ext4 now.

Have you ever flashed an hboot before? If not you have stock.
U should really try to s-off, its definitely worth it and it will be helpful in the long run.
Just flash the ruu I linked, and try revolutionary again. I'm pretty sure it will work.

Thanks for your continued help!
I've now made some progress and got Jellybean reinstalled and ran the terminal script to enable a2sd which worked this time! No corrupted SD ext and when I rebooted I got 118mb internal memory or more. It's gone down to 28mb now though after restoring most of my 141 app's from Titanium plus but I can see the SD ext shows 512mb used out of the 1GB I allocated so that is working!
I also got my last Nandroid backup to work which previously just bootlooped due to the corrupt sd ext and retrieved a few important text messages I'd saved to my SMS backup app, which is nice! I've got 3 years of text messages stored so am quite precious about them!
Once I complete my restore, I'll do a new Nandroid backup and copy it to my Mac and then maybe start exploring S Off again.
The thing though that worries me about S OFF is that even if I do succeed in doing it, there seem to be more hoops to jump through even then! E.g. re-rooting and then there are peeps who have changed their Desire Bravo's internal memory partition, which sounds pretty serious.
As I say, I'd like to be able to use EXT4 recovered but I do have 2 weeks to get a refund if I don't S OFF.
I'll see how I go and report back if I get S OFF.
