Hello all, I beg thee if you can help me, my friend "stole" my xda orbit while I was erm drunk and changed a load of settings, inc adding a password. When I was sober he told me what it was so I could use the phone again. But last night I accidently wanted to change the 4 digit number code that you do when the phone goes inactive for like 1 minute...Instead I think I accidently activated some password...everytime I go to restart the xda I get grilled for a password and if its wrong the time counter keeps going up and up...
Basically I really either need to crack or deactivate this password or some how backup my txts and phone...as I didn't before and theres a few sentimental texts I don't want to lose...
I hope you can help me
i think you might be stuck unless you can figure out the passcode!
i dont think it lets you sync your phone at all does it?
no sync
no asks for a password before sync-ing wondered if there was an alternative to activesync that would work??
was about bootloader mode, if you can go in you would be able to flash a (new) rom.....
errr right
you've lost me, last time I did rom flashing was on a very old XDA and ive forgtten..help!?!
You just have to go to WM6 artemis part of the forum, read the topics about "how to flash" and use the last wm6 rom B&B v3.7.
Before that, ensure bootloader mode is available.
Good luck
huh
1 I don't know how to know if bootloader mode is available
2 I think im on WM5!?
If it is a UK model then he can flash it back to the original ROM using the microSD card first if it will not connect by USB cable.
Yes its an 02 XDA Orbit and I live in the uk and it is a UK phone...so I guess I can but how the hell!? lol Thankyou by the way you may have saved me!
As it seems no backup was done, what about trying to ask a repair center if they can "unlock" the password. Of course you will have to show to purchase invoice ....
Thanks, that will be my alternative if the rom flash doesnt work...just need to be told how to do it via micro sd!!!!

I will PM you about the file you need as all references to it seem to have been removed from the site.
You then put the file onto an empty microSD card and put the card into the phone.
When you turn on the phone ho hold in the 'record' button (top left hand side viewed from the front of the phone) and the phone should go into boot-loader mode and recover the OS from the microSD card.
EDIT: NOT removed, just unpinned! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314866
Does it matter if anything else is on the SD card?
Do I need to update to a newer WM5 Rom after as I think i saw that 02 1 is a bit old??

Sorry, but doesnt a hard reset solves this problem?? (if the lock is on the phone) sipmle and quick solution.
If it is the sim that is locked, contact you provider.
Considering flashing the ROM is deffinately going to wipe any saved texts etc. Surely a simpler option is a hard reset?
Press and hold both soft-keys, press the stylus into the reset hole, release reset, wait for message on screen and release soft-keys.
This will return the phone to out-of the -factory state, so again you will loose all saved data in system memory and all installed applications in system memory.

Not quite. Flashing the ROM will erase your "sentimental" messages.

Yes, but it is looking like he is going to lose them no matter what happens.
Just Hard Reset it....Wont ask for the password...you will loose your data on the device though....and if your data is on the PC can sync again...no issue there...but the service centers will not remove the password...I had the same issue...and thats what i did.
cheers
yeah all you have to do is hard reset the pda and then the password will be erased, along with all your data ofc.
It would be interesting though to find a way to "crack" the password or somehow remove or bypass it.....
like some kind of PUK code?
Hey guys! I'm sorry if this has been answered already, but i have a T-mobile GS3. I got tired of waiting for the JB OTA update, so i decided to root my phone and try out CM10. I followed the instructions on how to do the one click method using MSkip's Toolkit. I made a full Nandroid backup thru ClockworkMod before and thought we'd be good. After trying CM10 I wanted to restore my backup. After doing so, I have NO DATA connectivity thru the phone. It worked fine on CM10 initially, but now, no matter what ROM I use or backup i restore to, it still wont connect. All i have is EDGE network.
All i want to do now is use TriangleAway, unroot, and OTA update to stock JB for now. Strangely enough my app's that are already on the phone WILL update using EDGE network, but wont allow me to access the PlayStore. I'm in over my head now, so I'm asking for help. It's been over a week now searching thru forums, but i cant find any solutions. Geez...I'm a NOOB...i know.
I dont have an EFS backup.
Can ANYBODY help me out, PLEASE?

I could keep finding more for you, but this should suffice. You should've backed up more then just the rom itself... hope you get it back.
Try switching Airplane mode on and off, doesn't work? Try going to settings mobile networks and Data connection, check and uncheck few times, it worked for me
Go To settings -> About Device -> Status
Do you have an "IMEI"? Is it 14 digits or so? or does it say "UNKNOWN?

IMEI restored...
Hey guys! good news/bad news. I got the IMEI restored to my phone!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29514187
the link above has all the resources on how i did it.
Now that the IMEI is restored i am still working on the EDGE only issue. I'm researching it now. i'll keep you posted.
any ideas/suggestions are always appreciated! thanks fellas
UPDATE:
I've been searching the forums for a few hours now and there are many links, but none seem very conclusive.
Does anybody have any solid directions/tips? Im glad to have my IMEI back, but want my DATA back, dangit.
This is driving me crazy!
Much thanks for any help!
did you go back through the hidden menu after all is done and set USB settings back to MTP + ADB?
I did change those settings back, mt3g. i did find one post that seems helpful...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997
however, it seems quite complicated and has alot of disclaimers...
im willing to try it out, but seeing as how im uneducated enough to have gotten myself into this problem in the FIRST place...im not so confident. haha.
are you familiar with this method? does it work?
Reflash your phone back to stock via ODIN. Confirm data is back and then go back to toying with your phone.
If data is not back, you're probably SOL.

I just went through the same thing. Use qpst to backup qnc file (once you are sure your imei is back restored) to desktop. Then use qnc generator to open that backup and save it with a different name to desktop. Then open qpst and go to restore and choose the new qnc that was generated and restore it. Flash the modem of your choice and voila. Back in action. Working perfect now. 4G is around 7-9mb in the New Orleans area where I am.

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this in but haven't been unable to pinpoint my problem. I have a s3 on boost mobile rooted and running custom rom. My daily rom is dandroid. By the way, all these roms are for sprint. On dandroid (4.1 android), I have no data issues whatsoever. When I flash the collective (4.3 android) I have data when I first reboot and if I don't turn on wifi data will work fine until I turn on wifi. By the way, wifi works good too but when I turn wifi off, it somehow breaks the data connection. I have no data, nothing.Sometimes a reboot will turn data back on, other times no. I also get the error when it first reboots where it says something to the effect androidprocess.com has stopped. I go into settings-mobile network-network operator and comes up error while searching for networks. I'm thinking possibly that this error with not being able to find a network is somehow related to the issues I'm having. Once I turn wifi off, I cannot get data to work again. I have tried this on my home wifi and a open network at work and same issue. I have communicated with one of the rom developers and gave him a logcat of when this issue happens but he is unable to isolate the problem. I also flashed dirtyunicorns (after doing full wipe), another 4.3 rom and and I have the exact same issues with wifi breaking data when I turn it off. After this, I have gone back to my backup of dandroid (4.1 rom) and I have no data issues anymore. I can turn wifi on and off no problem and it doesn't affect my data connection. I beginning to think somehow its related to the 4.3 version but this is unconfirmed. If anyone has any suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are many threads out there about making a backup copy of the "/efs" folder. that folder contains all of your IMEI information that is NOT replaceable! There are several cases all over the web, about people who have lost that information causing them not to have service, leaving them with "generic" IMEI's and some with all "0's"
I am posting this to help prevent thoes who are unaware of the consequences that happen when the EFS information is lost!
Here I will post a few guides and informational threads here in XDA to help with this.
EFS Tool for Windows
Guide for the Galaxy S II
A Story From the Vibrant
From the Galaxy Note
I would also emphasize on making a nandroid backup of your complete system in recovery before starting to venture off onto any custom rom!
Here the folks at XDA have built a great community with a outstanding reputation to help one another advancing to the next level, also unlocking the extreme potential of our devices.
Be sure to "hit" the thanks button and when possible post a personal "Thanks" to the great devs and contributers we have here in XDA!
Feel free to add to this thread, any useful tips and such...
Thanks and God bless.
I have not yet confirmed this, but here are three links to what may be a way for those who have lost their EFS to repair it!
there are other guides on how to recreate the efs folder but these tools may enable us to insert the correct information!

Thanks to Pierreone, he has provided this link providing a individual from Poland that can repair your IMEI through TeamViewer for a small donation. This may be out only hope!!

Please if anyone tries these methods, report here to confirm success or failed!

That should be enough, but I would make backups in at least to other ways just to be safe, it's better to be safe than sorry. a single file can get corrupt without your knowledge! find a on-line file host like Google drive and that way if your pc was ever to go down it will always be there. Just don't loose your password!!!
to know that there is a problem, check the about phone section in status, the device will show your phone info, look for the IMEI! if it reads all 0's or a generic number starting with "04" and ending like "40000" you have problems! that is a unique serial number that identifies your individual phone!
I'm also not sure that if you were to use it to call an emergency hot line like "911" they would be able to locate you in time! that may not be true tho!

the serial number so far is not a problem! it's the IMEI that you need to worry about! some refurbished phones and others that have flashed a custom rom will display an all "0's" serial no.
this is simply a helpful warning to make a backup before doing any modding! and finding ways for others to repair what is lost! if your phone is ok, just make a backup and your good!
One day we will figure out how to completely restore a lost efs and edit what is needed to get back to the norm!
Thanks to Pierreone, I added a link to a thread that looks promising and has success reports!!
Whew, I got lucky. I don't have an EFS backup and have flashed several custom ROMs, but I referenced About Phone against the label under the battery and my IMEI is still intact!
Could someone post what the Generic IMEI is so people can know whether their device is intact?
This is a a bigger problem than it sounds, because in some countries, changing the IMEI may be crime and land you jail time! If the IMEI under About Phone doesn't match the under-battery label, you could be in deep ****.

About the efs folder ?
First of all Thank You for the heads up... I'm finding out a lot about backing up the efs folder but not a lot of detail about what exactly is contained in it other than imei and serial... probably because it shouldn't be fooled with but I like to know how things work in detail... is there any detailed post or site where I can get a complete explanation about it ? Complete file list/tree? What else does it control ? Can it be edited ?

This utility works fine. Just wanted to mention 2 things that you need to set before running this successfully:
Settings -> developer options -> android debugging enabled
Settings ->Developer options-> Root access -> set to 'apps and adb'
I followed the guide from the Galaxy S2 forum, and after the first command:
busybox cp -a /efs /sdcard/efs/
Every line says "can't preserve ownership of..." and "operation not permitted"
Am I doing this right?
I did get an efs folder on my internal storage which is about 5mb in size after that command anyway
The rest of the guide, all of the other commands went through ok.
Holy crap, I wish I had listened to this warning! After flashing a great new rom and getting it 98% set up the way I like it I was deleting some junk apps the marketplace had auto installed, one of them (for wi-fi hotspots I think) was to blame and must have toasted my IMEI.
I thought, oh I'll just restore my CWM backup from an older setup - md5 error can't restore. DOH! After spending most of two days hunting for solutions (none of them linked in this thread worked, except I did get to where I could place calls with a generic IMEI but no data or text). I finally was able to recalculate the md5 manually and restore my old backup, which then got stuck at boot logo, then I flashed a new ROM and the IMEI still isn't back! After much reading I have come to understand NANDROID BACKUPS DO NOT TOUCH THE EFS. That is one thing that that I didn't understand, and the reason I thought I was safe. Please update the OP to state that so more people like me will listen to your advice.
Backup your EFS! Thanks for the warning

Victory!!!! :victory:
I was so close to just paying at http://sam.123unlock.nl/ and using their service to re-write my IMEI (because they show an unlock video using our phone and their software), but I kept digging in XDA and trying everything I could find. I tried the SIII IMEI editor, NV reader-writer, manually restoring the .nv_data.bin, mobiletech videos backup script...blah blah blah. I tried restoring CWM backups, flashing back to stock everything, using kies, I was trying everything! During all this I at times had no IMEI, all 000s, and a generic #, each of which provided different levels of services. I considered keeping the generic IMEI which AT&T didn't seem to mind but then I finally stumbled on a solution.
In reading the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914 post which is linked to in the "A Story From the Vibrant" in the OP I tried the abd EFS tar command and executed it on another Captivate Glide I have that had some water damage but is mostly still functional thinking I could overwrite the entire good EFS of that phone to my good phone with the hosed IMEI. I used AROMA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108 and deleted the EFS from CWM (I felt like adb and terminal weren't effective since the OS was still awake) and then restored from my working EFS tar, then wrote on top of that the first backup of the hosed EFS I had from before I started messing with it (thinking I'd try that before trying just the other phone's E)FS.
When I rebooted I had the correct serial and IMEI back for the phone! It is now working 100%
I flash alot from to rom, if i use the aroma file manager n save the entire efs folder on my external drive ,if i were to ever run into problems can i go bak to aroma file manager n just restore the efs folder and make everythinfunction again ?
Some guys say yes, others say use the tar command to preserve file permissions. I backed it up both ways. When I used aroma I deleted the files and replaced them rather than over-writing the corrupted ones and it worked fine for me.

So I just got my captivate glide bought it used and I followed thegreatones instructions to get CM 10.1 using the factory image to get it to 4.X then flashing the rom.. and after i flashed CM 10.1 my imei was gone. SIGH. I don't have a backup, which of the paid services works the best? who has tried them?
I managed to make EFS Pro work but the glide is not listed and I don't see any partition to backup. Am I missing something?

I haven't tried any but I would first give AT&T a call. They can probably assist you. And I believe there's a 14 day return date, I believe AT&T only checks the physical aspects of the phone.

The latest rom modifies the efs folder (where your imei is stored) so only some modems can read it. For unknown reason kies or ota updates don't modify the efs, so the new rom can't use the efs info. The solution is to flash back to an older rom other than dme4/dme6. Your sim will be recognized. I advise you to backup your esf folder and to awlays ve a copy of it

Awesome cheers mate will try this when i get back! would that mean i would not have the newest update? or could i just flash the newest rom after?
Dude first thing is check if your Imei is corrupt. Go to about device/status and if it starts with 0049, this means it's corrupt and without a backup Samsung are the only ones who can fix as they have to replace the motherboard. If it is corrupt you could try moving your efs to SD card and then rebooting and then moving it back.

I have network problems, i have the correct imei, serial number and baseband but in the phone status says "network unknown"i don't have an efs backup, and my actual efs folder doesn't have any of the nv files, another thing is that the phone has signal bars even without the sim card, i have done a lot of factory resets, flashes thru odin but nothing works, can anybody help me to solve my issue please? Sorry if my english isn't good since is not my native language...thanks in advance
Wrong modem.
Thanks for your reply but I don't think that is a modem problem because I've flashed all the possible modems and still the same way, another thing is that I entered to the secret menu and did a erase of efs 1 2 3 or something, is there a way to recover or fix that problem? Please help me I am desperate
if you erased your "efs", your phone is toast

So there isn't any way to restore it?
well, I assume you made a back up of everything before you started flashing and installing all sorts of files on your phone...
