Removing Bing as default search engine and back to Google - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

You might notice that if we input wrong url in the default internet application, then it'll take us to Bing search.. Yess, its Bing, instead of Google
Do you have any idea how to change its default behaviour to use google as the default?
I'm using Desire bought in Germany.. Have made a search and all are directing to editing some sort of registry which I don't think that's apply for Android device...
Thanks in advance..

thats very strange, ive never heard of bing on an android phone as default as it should be google. If you have location enabled does ite ven change to bing.country or does it always default to bing.com not bing.it bing.co.uk etc?
I dont think there is a option anywhere in the settings to do this and if you wish to change it you will need to root.
If you root and install an unbranded non vodafone rom on i bet it will work.

Hi Alex, thanks for comment.
You can try this on u'r desire:
- Type wrong internet address on the url form
- It will bring you to Bing search (instead of google), which from there it will give lists of potentially correct url...
Mine is unbranded since I bought from amazon.de, so I'm very sure all Desire behaves like this..
Pity if its true that we can change it :-(
HTC Desire + XDA Inhouse App

Odd, if I do a URL wrong it just comes up with the Android "Web page not available" site.

It was baked into the ROM by your provider. The only way to remove it is to root your phone and install a generic ROM.

[Q] Contact address show - default action

Hi,
when clicking on the (street) address of a contact in the HTC Desire HD contact app, I'm not offered a choice anymore. The default action now is to open the address in the HTC locations application. I used to get a choice between HTC locations, Google Maps, and other navigation programs. I do not want to use HTC locations.
I can't find a way to get the choice back again. I downloaded DefaultApp Reset by T.Fujii from the market and it offered to delete the default actions of HTC Sense and the Browser. I did that, without success. Looking in other threads the advice was to use ClearDefault from the market. I couldn't find that one, but I guess DefaulApp Reset does the same.
I can go to settings > applications > manage applications, and delete default actions of programs. In fact, the DefaultApp Reset just takes you there too. None of the applications I associate with my problem have the possibility to hit "clear default actions", they're all greyed out. I have looked into the following applications:
Contacts
Contact widget
Friend stream and - widget
HTC Hub
HTC Likes
HTC location service
HTC Sense
HTC Sync
Settings
Settings wizard
Location
Locations
Locations launcher
Locations widget
Maps
Settings widget
Street View
Maybe the names are a bit wrong, I'm not using english on my device.
After clearing HTC Sense and Browser with the app, no more new applications show up anymore that can be undone from default actions.
What can I do?

I never had the choice. It always went to Google maps, but now goes to HTC Locations. This came up on another thread - it could have been over on Androidfourms - and there is nothing to change to fix it on a stock phone (that anyone has found - maybe if it's rooted). All I want is to be able to see the full postal address in writing and then, *if* I wanted, to then see it on a 'map'.
After checking a few apps out I went and installed Youlu and it does exactly what I want. Shows the address then launches Google maps if you tap it. It'd be good to be able to change the application that is launched but you can't have everything ....
Dave
Hmm, that would suck. I'm pretty sure I had the choice once....
I figured it out, all of a sudden. When you are in the contact list, you can click on the picture of a contact in stead of on the name. Then you get a small widget that has a Map option to the utmost right. That one opens a window where I can chose between Google Maps and Waze, where I was looking for.
That doesn't solve your problem but does solve mine. Happy again!

You're right. Sort of .... On mine (latest OTA update - the one that was pulled) I get that widget but choosing the map option gets me Google maps. No choices. very strange that touching the address gets you Locations but the map option on the contact picture is Google ..... Me thinks HTC's software engineers need some better QA testing!
Dave
Well the choice I get is between Maps and Waze. So, if you don't use Waze - which you should by the way - that might be the reason you don't have a choice.
Or, it could be that you have ticked the always use this action box. You might be able to undo that, using the method I described in my topic start. BTW, it seems that deleting to many apps' default actions broke up all Auto Sync on my device. Got it up and running now after some fiddling around.
Easy check: download Waze from the market and see if you get a choice.
I'm wondering what the requirements for an app are to show up in the choice list.
wanted to post the same...
... question...
my dhd stock newest OTA update also doesnt ask which maps application should be startet.
it just opens "locations" instead of asking.
thanks for the workaround over the contact list, works fine ;=) but isn't a solution...
best regards,
mike
Any update for this problem ?
searching as you are
sorry, just a few days ago i searched google again.
no solution found :=)

browser Google listings not linking to dialer

Hi i have searched and searched but cant come up with anything. I am runing skyraider 4.0. When i search for a businesses listing in the browser i can not click on the phone number link and have the dialer pop up automatically any more. Any one know why this may be or how i may be able to fix it?
also i should add that if i search with Bing the links work for the dialer. It is only google phone number links... do you think it is on googles end?

[Q] Facebook touch?

Heyhey,
Has anyone notice the "touch.facebook.com" page has recently changed? It seems to be redirecting to "m.facebook.com".
According to this source (http://www.redmondpie.com/facebook-launches-new-unified-mobile-website/) Facebook have done it to make it easier for themselves, and it should automatically adjust based on your device.
Now, AFAIK, the Desire Z can do roughly everything. So does anyone know why I'm getting a fairly basic "m.facebook.com"? It misses out features such as being able to check in to places - something which the touch site did well.
I am aware there are apps - but I am generally not in good reception areas, Opera still operates quickly, whereas the apps just sit there.
So, is there a way to force my phone into tricking Facebook into providing me the decent version?
Regards,
Chris

is there a way to do this for opera? kinda miss the touch site too
On Opera, I have found that I have to go to "opera:config" and there is an option in there to change the useragent.
I've managed to get a site which looked similar to the touch.facebook.com. I suppose I just need to find the correct useragent to use to enable places again now.
Hey thanks for the heads up!

After a bit of trial and error, I still can't get back to the functionality I once had. I'll just have to use one of the many crippled FB apps out there instead.

The "Places" functionality, and probably everything else you were looking for, is in the "More" dropdown. I use the new m.facebook.com to check in and do basically everything. It's a decent clone of the iPhone app.
Thanks for the reply.
I wish I had a "more" dropdown menu at the moment!
I did manage to get into the Places with one of the useragents I tried, but it didn't have the check-in option anywhere.
I really don't mind using the Facebook app, it is just a little slower, and misses out features such as event walls.
It's because Facebook plans on deprecating the touch site.

[Q] Contacts Adresses opening HTC localisations instead of maps

Hey,
I've been wondering how to make google map to open instead of HTC localisations when I clic on one of my contacts' adress.
Any idea ?
You can't as far as I know. HTC changed it so "their" app would open rather than Googles. Not surprising really. Instead of changing the mapping app, change the contacts app. I use aTakePhone and that opens Google maps still.
Dave
Go contact is also really good and also has a speed dialer which functions much like the sense one.

Google Now Doesn't Speak

Please forgive me, I have searched but 'Google Now' isn't a great search term...
Basically, I get no voice feedback when using voice search or the Google Now app on my 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update. Initially I was underwhelmed by Google Now and wondered what the fuss was, until I discovered it should be talking back to me in a Siri-like fashion.
I had the leaked 4.1 I/O release previously and same issue. Language is English and I have voice prompts turned on in the search settings.
Any ideas? It's a Google stock ROM and it never worked, so I really don't know what it could be.
Edit: Nevermind, same discussion here. Too bad there's no time-limited delete functionality here, feel free to delete.
Try this
There is my solution:
- Set your locale to whatever you want
- Set the Google Now Voice Language to English US
- Voice Output to Always
- Remove the tick(untick the box) on Hide Offensive Words
I spent hours of tinkering with this and tried all kinds of options, but in the end that solved it for me. This is because recently there was an update to Google Search, which is the application designation for Google Now and it introduced this bug.
I have my locale to my native one English UK en-GB and everything works like a charm as it should be and as it used to work before the update.

Make sure that you have downloaded the offline speech recognition in English US and maybe try asking something like "What's the time?". It will not talk back to all questions. Only the ones that were specifically pre-programmed. If it still doesn't work, try putting your system locale to English US and restarting your phone. And most importantly update your Talkback, Google Search and Google Voice search apps to their latest through the Play Store.
What I did now officially works on my O2 HTC One S and 3UK HTC One X, so it works for sure on those two.
I hope this helps
