Ahoy hoy.
Just a quickie, I'm using nprussell's lovely Villain 3.2 atm but I'm having an arse of a time pushing things over using adb because the system is always 99% full. Same goes with the other Eris-leak-based-ROMs.
Is this because the rom is based off of a system dump? And does anyone have any clues on how to free it up some...
I would be soooo grateful for any help.
you can try moving apps from /system/app to /data/app, for example google maps gives you 2.6 mb in /system... also check /system/bin and /system/xbin if you can get some stuff out there to /data/xbin. you can probably get ~10mb back easily. also check for stuff you don't need in /system/app (for me that would be twitter, stock, footprints, quickoffice). remember to delete the .odex aswell if there is one, not only the .apk.
Easier way?
Is there any easier way to remove stuff from system/app than remounting it like this?
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblk3 /system
other than changing it in the rom before you flash it?

Yes, I'm talking pre-flashed.
try my latest rom, i have 14mb free which is about 9%
tricky
I tried moving some apps from /system/sd on Villain 3.3 and it works for apps that are not related to the core system .. so if you move google maps it will work
it is also possible to remove twitter, flickr, facebook .. etc .. (unless you need it)
but when I moved some (many) HTC apps I got fc's and the stock lock screen and so on
I knew it was a stupid idea anyway but I have never tried it so I had to see
anyway: dont remove and/or move core htc apps, they seem to highly depend on each other
I have the files to install the app itself, but when I try it says that it's already installed and asks me to uninstall it. Is there something that I need to do in order to make this work? I really hate google voice and other alternatives to the stock app. This is literally the only thing that I don't really like about cyanogenmod, and it's probably not worth using a different rom just because of this, so if anyone knows a fix please let me know, thanks!

Same issue: no VZW VVM on CM 6.1 RC2 / Incredible
I agree, I would really like to have the stock visual voicemail app on my CM installation. Does anybody have any ideas about how to get this to work?
I tried copying the VVM.apk from the original system image and installing it, but I get a DEXOPT error, and I don't really know what that means. Is there anyway to recompile/repackage the APK to make it work on the CM ROM?
I'm familiar with basic Android software development and tools, I just need help finding what direction to go in.
Use file manager and go to "/system"
Mount the folder R/W(Read/Write
open build.prop in Text Editor
look for "ro.horizontalVvvm = True" and chenge it to False
look for "ro.horizontalBUA = True" and change it to False
save your edit, and back out to thr "/system" folder. Once again switch the directory back to R/O, exit your apps and reboot.
You shoulkd now be able to install your Vvm.apk without it telling you to uninstall it because one is already installed.
Note I am using Virtuous rom however it should work for most roms I would imagine.
If you do not have a Vvm.apk here is one from the Droid X but it works great on my incredible. Looks almost like the stock incredible version.
mc-pdfd-live.dyndns.org/droid/VIRTUOUS_ROM_3.2.0_ADDONS/Motorola_Virtual_Voicemail/virtual-voicemail.zip
Hope this helped.
I can't edit the file. It errors when I try to save.
Here are a couple of simple questions for BYUsinger84 to help me figure it out.
Is your phone rooted ? If not this will not work.
If thats not the problem are you making sure to mount the "/system" folder R/W(Read/Write) before modifying the "build.prop" file, and then back to R/O(Read/Only) once editing is done and saved.
You say it errors when you try to save. Sounds like you probably didnt mount the "/system" folder to be R/W not allowing the modified file to be written to the phone.
If you did do all of that corrrectly and it still dosen't work, try to write down or get a screen capture of the exact error as it is written on your screen.
Hope this helps.
Yes. this fix works on the Incredibly ReEngineered rom as well. Thanks for the ups.
THANKS!
I lost the visual voicemail app when I flash the OMGB V7 rom
Why not use Google voice? Sets up the same thing.

FYI i know this is an older post, but maybe, like me, someone will search for how to make vvm work - this is for my tbolt, but looks like it works on andriods in general, just gotta have hookup to big red.
Im running synergy rc2 and these switches are already true. i used root explorer to browse to the system/build.prop file and viewed it (didnt have to edit, but if i did, root explorer already opens r/w defalut and if you select and hold, the menu that comes up has the 'edit in text editor' selection available)
the titanium backup of vvm.apk wouldnt install, but when i downloaded the one above (THANKS FOR IT), i installed it and my messages started coming in. i installed it right from the SD card - not sure if that will bite me in the butt later, but oh well.
for those who ask why vvm - i am new to android and never set up gvoice account before jumping into the root game. oops on my part, but its kinda nice cuz it makes me dig in and look at the way things work. to retreive my vms, both past (like my 4year old son calling and telling me that when we went through texas, thats where t-rexes lived long ago) and present/new. now that it is working again, NOW i can migrate to gvoice and drop the 2.99 fees!
i suspect there are others in a similar boat...
So, yeah. This is deodexed & zipaligned System. It will overwrite your /system partition so any changes you have made (theme, hosts file, etc...) will be lost. In addition to the deodexed /app and /framework folders this will add a transparent notification bar and ad blocking host file. Why? Cause, I made this for myself, so it's the way I like it. Flash this if you want, I'm not forcing you to. Nor will I be held responsible if it eats your first born or tries (succeeds) to commit suicide. You've been warned. If you just want the deodexed files, I'll leave the manual method below and you can do it the hard way. Maybe I'll get the update-script working at some point, but I don't know. If you're good with the new sytax for CWM's update script, hit me up in IRC, I'm stumped.
Note: As I said, this formats your /system partition. Not your /data partition, so all your apps and such will still be there.
So, Once More
What you get:
Deodexed & zipaligned (ready to theme) system
Transparent Notification Bar
Ad blocking host file
No warranty
No mobileprint apk. I couldn't get it deodexed no matter what I tried and can't be bothered to try anymore. Never used it. Never will.
Nandroid Recovery Method
YOU MUST HAVE CWM RECOVERY INSTALLED
use either the bootstrapper from the market or follow his instructions found HERE be careful and use this at your own risk, it is very beta. I recommend doing a backup from it before you flash this as well.
How To Flash
extract the folder to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
Boot in to CWM Recovery go to advanced restore, select restore /system only. Once that is complete clear the cache, reboot. you can then delete your dalvik cache (note: clearing the dalvik cache doesn't work via CWM currently). That's it.
If you have anything go wildly crazy, lemmie know. Also, I doubt it's success on any other carriers version of Tab, but if you feel like it, go ahead, I already gave you responsibility for your own actions. Do what you want with it. If it works though, let us know.
Oh yeah- Download if you feel like it.
ODIN Restore Method
Flash via Odin PDA PDA PDA PDA PDA PDA PDA
If you need any more instructions on how to flash via odin, search.
Download the tar HERE
OLD PITA BORING MANUAL METHOD
FIRST
So, Back up your system first. Wait, yeah, you can't in recovery yet, so seriously people- don't touch this yet unless you know what you're doing since you won't have a supersimplehappynice backup to revert to if you mess up. Only the cold, cold darkness that is Factory Reset.
I haven't been able to manually deodex these successfully yet. If anyone has, please, hook me up and I'll update the package (or I'll update it when I get around to deodexing them).
What are these for???
These files will allow you to theme your Tab, some say it speeds up your system and others say it allows you to get all the ladies and even others think it's a threat to democracy so PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
What do I do with these???
Okay, this isn't hard, but it's easy to get a negative result if you skip a step so keep reading, follow the directions and don't blame me if you are singled out for the 3D imaging system at the airport.
Basically you want to use ADB push or Root explorer to delete the apks/jars/odex/*.* in /system/app and /system/framework and then replace them with the files from the archive (the archive has an app and a framework folder for you, I think you know where each belongs).
Now if you use root explorer to delete everything from /framework, things will get sticky for a minute and you'll get some FC's and such, but I was able to copy all the files over, so just be patient.
Also, remember how I told you to read the directions? KEEP READING OR YOU'LL MISS IMPORTANT STUFFS. So, hi there. You shake the boredom out of between your ears and giving me your full attention again? Good. Now is important. You are really going to want to clear both your normal, and dalvik chache. Otherwise you're going to reboot and your phone is going to be slower than an Audi R8. You can do this with cache cleaner, recovery (if you're running noobln's script) or adb. I used recovery for standard cache and this adb command.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell rm -rf /system/sd/dalvik-cache
Then just reboot and start porting some themes over for me (revolution plzkthx).
A couple of notes:
All these are from a VZW Tab. Will they work on your T-mobile one? Well, find out, if you want, or not. I don't care. Just don't come crying to me if you screw up your phone. I did not put a gun to your head and force you to use these files.
Also, if you screw up your Tab, for the love of the gawds, it's not bricked, calm down.
I suppose you want the download link, huh.
Here you go for the manual files.
Finally, if you like my work, donate to me so I can donate money to devs that make my world easier (and therefore yours).

any chance of a deodexed email.apk as it's not in there?
Any screenshots of what the themed versions can potentially look like? Need to weigh up the pro's / con's of being "experimental"
Thanks

Darn it, I'm sorry, I meant email.apk and not browser.apk. I haven't been able to deodex that apk yet. Sorry I should have it done soon but in the mean time you can use gmail or go back to an odexed FS. Original post updated.

They look exactly the same as on your Tab, just without being odexed. This is not a theme, nor does it change the appearance of any of these applications. It changes the way they function within the OS and allows for the ability to theme.
I mean absolutely zero offense by this, but if you're weighing out the pros/cons of doing this, you probably shouldn't. Just wait a while longer for recovery to be functional, then people will start putting out easily flashable ROMs and themes.
Sorry i misunderstood.
I thought they had been edited / themed already from the initial description..
Its been a long day. Im a risk taker anyways but ill pass for time being.
Keep up the good work.

Actually, I just got email deodexed.
HERE YOU GO
I'll have the other remaining apks out soon.
very kind.
I want to try it on my dell streak but the odexed email.apk kept force closing.
Let me know if it works.
f.c. as soon as you launch it.
i'll see if it needs any framework stuff added to work tomorrow.
Hi Boushh,
After removing files in both folders it FCs many and froze. It won't reboot now. Let me know what I did wrong. No compliants like you mentioned. Any rescue?
Thanks
Like I said, you'll get that, I was able to copy them over with root explorer between the FC's. If you can not easily do that, plug it in and adb push it.
Added a flashable zip to the first post, happy holidays guys and gals!
I tried the flashable zip with CWM, but it aborts when install.
How can I clear cache & dalvik cache in CWM. There is only with the clear data/factory reset.
Can you tell me the exact error that recovery prints?
I'm almost positive *clear cache* is in the root of recoveries settings and then *clear dalvik cache* is under advanced.
Error is "Installation aborted"
I use the CW Bootstrap recovery, then reboot recovery that purchased from Market for "Bootstrap for Tab".
Select install zip in SD card. Wipe clear cache & in advance for clear dalvik cache. It's still installation aborted.
Okay, I need to change something in the install script, illtry and do it in the next couple hours.
If you ever get the other apk's integrated into the update.zip, I'd be happy to give a test run on my VZW tab.
I did the manual files delete and paste before, but froze the Tab and non bootable anymore. I'm on my second tab, definitely need the update zip for this.

Just an update- I got back from vacation last nightand need a day to recover but I plan in fixing the zip tomorrow.
Also, regarding the mobile print apk, I have tried using every resource possible to deodex it without success so I've given up on it. I blame bad coding, lol.
If any of you care about quadrant scores (which I don't) I was recently asked what I was getting, around 1150-1170. So a bit better I than stock I suppose bit I only deodex for themes really.
I love my Desire and the new update is working well for me. Finally got rid of that stupid facebook thingy.
Now for the rest, I bougt this Desire but still can't do what I want (or better don't want) to do with it.
I would like the new rom BUT without:
Stock
FM Radio
Footprints
Friendstream
News
News and weather
Peep
Youtube
I don't want them,
I don't need them
and sure ass hell don't use them.
There are better apps for those!!! and I can put them on my SD card
I read some threads in this forum but none of them seems to do what I want. Is there anyone here that can tell me how to remove the apps OR how to bake a GB rom without all of the crap I don't want to have. Last time before update I saw on Modace a ROM kitchen that could take away a lot of the pain but that would cost me to much in my opinion.
you could either remove them with adb or android commander so go ahead and flash away whatever you like and then remove the apps you don't want, or alternatively you can always open the zip and remove the apps you don't want to be installed in the first place they're in /system/app

In addition to this post, here is a nice guide about system apps one can delete and which should not be deleted:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barebones
Hey all,
Live Wallpapers have been pulled from XDAndroid builds for a while. They do slow the device down, but they are eye candy... and I know everyone loves a little eye candy now and then.
So follow these steps if you want to give Live Wallpapers a whirl. I've included two (Starfield and the Matrix) but there are many, many more you can download once they are enabled... No guarantees any of them work, and again - This will slow down your phone, you've been warned!
Onto the directions:
Two methods - on the phone directly, or thru adb. Either way, you need to grab the .zip file (attached) and extract the files to your SD card. In reality you only need LiveWallpapersPicker.apk to enable the feature, but if you don't have any Live Wallpapers in mind, grab the other two APK's and put them on your SD as well.
First method - adb
Press enter after each entry...
Code:
adb shell
Code:
su
Code:
mount -o,remount rw /system
Code:
mv /sdcard/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk /system/app
Repeat the last step for livewallpaper.starfield.apk and livewallpaper.matrix.apk if you wish. Obviously the commands are assuming the APK's are at the root of your SD card - change the path if you placed the APK's in a different location.
Finally,
Code:
mount -o,remount ro /system
Second method - on the phone.
You need Terminal Emulator or ConnectBot. Connect to a local (root) shell.
I was going to make a separate section for this, but in reality it's the same steps as above - minus the adb shell part. Again, if you place the APK's at the root of the SD card - no folders - the above directions verbatim will work on the phone itself. Enjoy!
Feel free to use this thread to share your experiences and favorite Live Wallpapers - especially if you find one that works better than others, etc.
PS - In case you're unsure, once you've done this (no need to reboot) you should be able to long press on the desktop and go to "Wallpapers". You should now have a new option, "Live wallpapers".
Figured I would add my experience to kick things off.
mgross029 inspired me to try Live Wallpapers again, because of Go Weather. Pretty cool weather app, with a nifty Live Wallpaper for sure!

Combine this with tweaks from arrrghhh's speed improvement thread and WOW! My TP2 is running better than it ever did in WM!
Your results may very!
Iv tried making this work, (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1256011) but i cant seem to get it to work at all.
Im using a RHOD300 (tilt 2)
i downloaded the
Attached Files
LiveWallpapers.zip - [Click for QR Code] (347.8 KB, 45 views)
extracted them to my desktop, then placed them into the root of my SD card, then I ran haret and booted into android, then without going into terminal emulator i decided to see if i had a livewallpapers option just for kicks, and there was! but it kept force closing. then i loaded up terminal emulator and followed the steps (noted that im doing the "on phone" method) and sure enough there was indeed a new "live wallpapers" selector. however, whenever i try to use a live wallpaper, it force closes. (i even tried using livewallpapers i downloaded from the market, but that didnt work either) after rebooting to see if that was the problem, the same instance occured.
Thinking of a workaround, i saw that they were .apk files, so i this time placed them into the android app folder (where all the other .apk files are) and hoped that would work. and it didnt. So im at a loss as to what im doing wrong.
Also, by on phone method i assume that meaning downloading from your pc to your phone. not going to this page and downloading it to your phone
Any help would be much appreciated!
Edit: i dont think this would make much of a difference, but im using GO launcher ex from the market.

Well if you can select Live Wallpapers, you've done the steps correctly. If it's just FC'ing, I guess try a new data.img. Rename the old one to data.bak so you can easily revert to it.
This is experimental, and really a complete waste of time and resources - on the phone as well as your own . But I figured I would put it out there because so many were asking how...

I think the only reason why i could was because i put it in android apps with the other .apk files one time and then deleted it. After i did that the phone seemed to remember it was there after i deleted it and continued to have a livewallpaper option even after i deleted it. so thats why it wont work on the other data.img.
