Roaming - Desire General

Off to France on Saturday and I'm dreading the automatic connection any tips of making sure my phone won't connect and cost me the earth currently on t mobile UK
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

Sure.
Go to settings - wireless and networks - mobile networks - untick the box that says data roaming and your phone will not use data whilst abroad.
Hope this helps.
Rik.

Or just hold down the power putton and choose the bottom option "Mobile Network" and this will completely disable the data connection.
Phil

I'm on t-mobile and have just had a great 2 weeks in France. Wherever I went I seemed to get a 'E' connection which was very good and fast enough for Google maps.
Cost me £10 for 50mb over 31 days but you can get 20mb for a fiver to use in 7 days
I use phone for work emails and found the French signal very good. I choose Orange sfr I think which had the best data signal.
Hope this helps

Only guaranteed method to avoid data charges is to call your carrier and ask them to DISABLE roaming on your sim, also to make a record of it on your account.
Even if you do somehow manage to enable data roaming on the phone the sim won't allow it.

3G possible with Three Mobile PAYG?

I'm using their PAYG sim which gives a free 150mb allowance for 90 days, but am only ever able to connect via GPRS (my phone says I am roaming as well for some reason). Is anybody else using this sim and able to receive 3G?
yes indeed.
Three don;t have the 3G coverage of the other networks, and so they use Orange as a backup network when you are in an area that does not have any of their own transmitters. Seems you might be in such an area, which is why it says you are roaming cos you're actually on Orange!
Make sure you are not stuck in 2G only mode of course.....
dial *#*#4636#*#*
select phone information
slide down to the bottom, abnd make sure the first menu box is set to WCDMA preferred, and not GSM only.
Thanks for the information, thought this might be the case but wasn't sure. The phone was already set to WCDMA Preferred so I guess GPRS is the best I'm going to get from Three Mobile for the time being.
Thanks also for letting me know how to access the testing screens, lots of good info there!
no probs, here to help.....when i'm in a good mood and not at work of course

Going abroad.

I'm going on holiday to the Netherlands for a week and don't want to get charged for data whilst roaming.
What are the things I need to disable on my phone and how do I do them? I thought it was just a simple case of switching it to aeroplane mode but I want to make calls back to the UK because its free with the flexible booster I have with T-Mobile.
Thanks in advance
You can put a widget to enable / disable data transfer (add widget -> Settings --> Mobile network ).
You can also disable data tranfer while roaming: menu -> settings -> Wireless & Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Data roaming (on top)

And your second suggestion is enough?
What about pressing the power button and turning off data, is that a more reliable method?

Since you are on T-Mobile UK and heading to Europe, you shouldn't actually need to do anything at all now.
See here.
The important section is here:
What happens when I want to use Internet on my phone or my laptop in an EU country?
When you try to connect to the Internet either from your phone or your Mobile Broadband enabled laptop, you will be prompted to purchase a Booster by either an SMS or by a landing page in your internet browser. You will not be able to use any Internet services until you have purchased a Booster.

I can confirm that when I recently went to Paris, I was unable to use the internet until I purchased a booster. My advice though is to buy a booster anyway, and use internet sparingly (emails, occasional browsing etc).

Dave
Thank Dave, that was a really useful link. I was really paranoid about the cost incurred about Facebook updates and emails notifications sent to me. in the background. I think this clears everything up.
It really is time the networks sorted this out, they are all across europe, so there is no need to charge exhorbitant rates once you leave your home country, unless they do it purely as a profit maker.............................

Which is pretty much the reason they do it.
To be honest, the T-Mobile UK euro boosters aren't too bad, but I think the £40 booster should have at least 1gb to be really useful.

data-only sim card
You can buy a data-only sim card for your device. When I was travelling to Europe (Netherlands, Spain, France, Germany), I used MTXConnect, quite simple, you can use it the whole day for fixed price or pay only for Mbs when you need it.

Disable/Enable 3G/2G traffic when on different networks?

In Norway I live close to the border to Sweden. I have to roam in my area to a Norwegian Network, because my phone company only have their own network in the big cities here. Before I had an operator the had their own networks in my city.
So when I now roam with the other Norwegian network, I have to disable that "Disable network data when roaming". And sometimes I now get connected to the Swedish network and have to pay 20x times more pr MB.
Is there a way to disable 3G/2G on different networks of my choice?
Hope someone know of something that will help.
Sorry for my English.
Setting-wireless and network-mobile network-dataroming unchecked
Something like this cause mine is in dutch.
Like I said, I have to have it unched cous of my network today is not the default of my operator, so I'm romaing all the time when I use my phone. I want something that can read the operators name and then enable the 2G/3G data connection is it is one of the networks I've accepted. If it's not, then disable the connection.
Cant help you with your roamaing problem, Sorry. But maybe you should consider going back to your old network. If you have no signal at your home you may have the right to cancel your contract.
The clue is that I pay 20£(with use in Norway) until 1.1.2011 to use the phone(sms/mms, calls, MB) as much as I want for only 20£. After 1.1.2011 I'll pay 20£ for 500sms, 500 minutes and 500MB.
But that only works with the operator network and the one they rent(like I use). The one I rent belongs to Telenor, the biggest phone company, as they have the best signal too, I want to stick. But they suck at priceing, so I want to be with my new operator.
But why is it so hard to read the operator name with an app? Than then can enable/disable data connection?
My phone is Desire and it is rooted, running OpenDesire.
Sorry for misunderstanding the first time.
One option you could try is Tasker. I think it has the option to turn data off/on when connected to a certain cell tower. It's not the exact thing you asked for but i don't know any other options.
You have to program it yourself, but just download the app from there site (gives you a 7 day trial) and try it if you can make it work.
Cell Tower, is that the operators ID or the tower itselfe(a operator has many towers)?

Orange/ T-mobile roaming

Hi,
since the merger between Orange and T-mob, we are able to use each others network. Now, I have just signed up for this via their site https://kareena.orange.co.uk/share/
I does say you need to set network selection as auto rather than manual. I can't see this in settings - has anyone else sorted this?
Thanks
I haven't done anything with mine, just setup the share thing on the website and then followed the instructions. It works pretty well.
Does using the t mobile signal affect your bill in anyway?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
No,,they are the same company basically, so you can use for free
I had issues with T-Mobile (HSDPA) automatically switching to Orange (GPRS) whenever there was an Orange signal. Now I'm with Orange there is no such issue.
To set you DHD to find and select networks automatically follow ->
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Operators > Select Automatically
Remember to enable "Data Roaming" if you wish to use data, this is purely 2G (GPRS) at the moment. I believe they will be rolling out 3G roaming 2011 sometime.
Since I set it up aswel every like 5 to 10 minute my network changes over all the time T-Mobile then orange then back again i noticed also orange way better signal than T-Mobile as soon it gose back to T-Mobile i only like have 1 to 2 bars
HTC HERO - HTC HD2 - NOW HTC DESIRE HD & SAMSUNG GALAXY S Bring on the modding.

Orange uk with tmobile signal share

Hi I am in the uk and on the orange network, since I received a text from orange saying that I could share the tmobile signal about a week ago I have hardly ever got a signal anymore, I thought sharing the network was supposed to make it better not worse.
I set everything up as it said and I spoke to the customer service department to check it was set up as it should be and they said it was, but the problem is still there whatever I do.
So I wondered if there was other people on here that used orange in the uk and if so what's your signal like?
And
What radio do you guys use to get the best reception?
Thanks

Are you still picking up the Orange signal? Or the joint Orange T Mobile one?
I have the same setup and my phone stays on Orange most of the time and only flips to the Orange/Tmo one when the Orange signal is rubbish.

I was going to try and merge my t-mobile signal but i remember
my friend told me that android specifically has problems with it.
anyway this is taken from t-mobile site, dunno if u tried it :
HTC Desire : How to enable the sending and receiving of messages while using the Orange signal
To enable the sending and receiving of messages whilst using the Orange signal, choose the following path from the home screen of the device:
Menu >
Settings >
Wireless & networks >
Mobile networks (Set options for roaming, networks, APNs)>
Ensure the box labelled “Connect to data services when roaming” has been checked, in the section labelled Data roaming.
and this might help? :
Known issues with Android phones not set to enable 'data roaming'
Android phones are set not to enable ‘data roaming’, so when you’re using an Orange signal:
You won’t be able to send or receive picture messages or browse the internet
You might get a message that says, ‘You have lost data connectivity’
If you receive a picture message or activate an internet page, you might get a warning message, ‘Generic network failure’ or ‘Unknown error’
You might see the ‘roaming’ icon (a triangle) whenever you’re using an Orange signal
You might see a message ‘Allow data roaming? You may incur significant charges!’ each time your phone picks up an Orange signal
When you pick up an Orange signal your phone will ask you: ‘Allow data roaming?’
What to do: Enable ‘Data roaming’ on your phone, but remember to disable it if you leave the UK to avoid charges.
What to do: We’re working on a special fix for you to download to your phone. Keep an eye on our Help & Support section for when it’s available.
