not beening funny here but why is it,that every day someone comes out with a new rumour, fact unbranded desire will get there updates well before branded handsets, and iam looking at least a 3 week wait if iam lucky.

that was posted 18 hours ago so from the sounds of it we aint gonna get 2.2 officially for a while.
Yup, but it also sais
Indeed, he suggests that the updates are going quicker than could be expected: "I don’t think you’re going to see that really long six month, seven month lag, like you saw in the updates from 1.5 to 2.1, simply because it’s a less severe change.
"Switching from 2.1 to 2.2, they made a lot of tweaks, but they didn’t make any gigantic changes, so it should be a much swifter process".

Site's keep selectively quoting this interview it's annoying.
He specifically stated this as well:
"the updates are going quicker than could be expected: "I don’t think you’re going to see that really long six month, seven month lag, like you saw in the updates from 1.5 to 2.1, simply because it’s a less severe change."
EDIT// Ah you beat me.
he also said before christmas so could take them as long as November.
I was checking about 3g signal outage and asked the call centre person on the off chance.
Lady on the phone said I shall receive a text in the next 2 weeks.
So my source is an Official orange representative in the phone function department
I got her to confirm that I was talking about the 2.2 release for desire.
Still could be b/s but if that's the case I was out and out lied to.
I wasn't hassling her so it wasn't a lie to shut me up. I posed the question at the end of a pleasant conversation about signal outages.
olly you cant believe all that you hear from customer service folks, memory serves me well, dident one customer service say we will have it by the 23rd of june? that turned out to be b/s , ive not been a andriod owner that long but one thing ive learnt is always take what you read on here with a pinch of salt.
$5 says the cs rep thought you were talking about the 2.1 u1 update...
I am actually impressed with the total lack of interest many of the cs departments I´ve had contact with actually has for the products they support. Most of the cs departments actually know less than the average techsavvy customer.

I can see no reason for her to have lied
If I was gobbing off saying that orange a sh*t and that they take ages to release updated roms, then fair enough. Fob me off with a lie to make me go away.
but I wasn't and this was a zero stress call.
the 23rd june one said there is 'an' update coming this time I have been categorically told about a 2.2 update for desire.
The other bit of info I forgot to pass on was that I was told that this will be a two part update.
How could Orange possibly have a timeframe in place when HTC hasn't even finished the Generic ROM?

Well the only way we can find out if this is true or false is to wait 2 weeks
So if there's nothing by the 21st of July then she lied, but if there is then happy days
who would want a orange branded ROM anyways ha ha
Yeah is true no link no truth to the story.... orange need to put it on there site or something
Whether it's true or not, you'll get a Froyo + Sense rom whenever you get it. I guess it's fun to speculate, but meh
I can say 100% and dont doubt me, I have my sources, that this is very inacurate, as of yet Orange have no word on a froyo update, HTC has not published anything publically or on a coporate level.
Might text my mate who's a manager at one of the Orange call centers - see what he says...

Hi @ all
I know it wont be a 100% reliable news but I thought it would interest some of you.
A friend of mine ordered a HTC Desire at Sunrise (Swiss Operator). She was told that the delivery will be postponed to the beginning of August due to the fact that the device will be delivered with version 2.2 of Android aka Froyo.
That would mean that we could possibly get the official Froyo by the end of July for unbranded devices.
Hope the staff at Sunrise is reliable and the info is right!!!
We will know more in about one month.
Sorry if the news has already been posted before.

Interesting
Well, HTC Customer Service reps got the date wrong for this. So I doubt that a network service provider rep has that much information.
I have a feeling your friend couldn't get a Desire because of the same problem that the Droid Incredible is facing. HTC has a shortage of AMOLED screens.
See here. http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/veri...le-shortage-due-to-amoled-production-shortage
Also, see here for a (probably) more realistic time table direct from HTC PR guy. http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-says-expect-froyo-version-sense-ui-christmas

Thanks für your reply.
I am aware of the shortage of AMOLED displays and the recent PR statement of HTC. I dont pretend my info is right, only wanted to share what I heard. Nevertheless I think August could be possible. The PR guy said that all newer devices (Desire, Legend, etc.) will get Froyo by Christmas. The HTC Desire being their top end device at the moment in Europe I assume it will get the update first. And I am quite sure that they wont provide the update to all devices at the same time. So lets hope for it to be true .

There's no timetable there at all - it just says that they'll be finished with Froyo updates before Xmas. Well, August is before Xmas, as is September, October, November and most of December!
What we do know is that HTC have gone on record to say that they are expecting the first updates to roll out in Q3, but we don't know which devices will get it first.

Dave

Lets hope it's true and the Desire gets 2.2 in August before the other phones, but i must admit that 2.1 is great and i have no issues with it so am happy to wait whenever it comes out.
It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect. I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas.

It seems alot of the replies in this thread don't take into account the fact that a HTC 2.2 test rom with sense has already been leaked to certain people and was mostly working. So HTC are pretty far along in development already.

I think this is cos they want to prevent what happened with the 2.1 Update for the HTC Hero (more than a half year between announcement and shipment, at least in europe).
Better to make promises they can hold. So the Christmas announcement makes completly sense to me.

Roms that dont work
Not trying to offend anyone.. I m pretty new to the HTC Desire (3 days) but VERY happy I forgot I ever had a 3GS.
But as far as roms are concerned, I see it is not worth using them since simple stuff such as video recording do not work.
Man, hope this better be true.
Sorry to sound so retardly geeky but it's been such a deep sadness for not being able to use the sdcard for applications. I'm sure you dudes feel the same!

The only thing they have said is that they will be done BEFORE Christmas, that could be any time not precisely Christmas, it just gives them a window to allow for things to go wrong.
Another hint the update is not far of (statement from Eric Lin, global PR and online community Manager of HTC):

I really think some people need to step away from the internet and go out and have some fun. If it's here when you get back then you can install; if it's not then not.
Surely an update to your mobile phone can not be the most important thing in your lives...
Not in the least bothered really when it comes, today, tomorrow, next week.
I already have Froyo and its running sweet.
How many stupid Desire users does it take to screw in a lightbulb ?
The be honest I am more irritated by dumb-fu-ks who have more time than brain cells and have to whinge about everything including the firmware release of a completely functional mobile phone. Even worse is the fact that two mouse clicks away is another section of the forum where they could easily download and run about a dozen versions of Android 2.2 hacked/packed/delivered with all the bells and whistles.
So people put the fu-king phone down, chill out, go outside and take a breath of fresh air. You will live longer ....
THE UPDATE WILL COME WHEN IT COMES..... Jumping up and down about it, checking the OTA update on the phone every 2 microseconds and making another 1.4 billion new threads won't make it appear any faster...
Next instalment in the new pointless thread forum - "I fu-ked up my phone when updating the OTA ! Help !!!", "Why won't the HTC OTA work on my Orange/Virgin/crap branded Desire" and my favourite "What's an OTA", oh and another "Anyone got Froyo Update?" you do have a point here. but: why do you get so angry?
you accuse them of having nothing else to do than wait for the froyo release. yet, you fail to convey this in an appropriate manner: In order to make them realize that they are poor souls (whose sole purpose in life is a phone software update), you better tell them in a way they don't perceive as *****ing and hating.
however, the way you get all angry about them raises the suspicion that you yourself have little else to do in your free time. complaining about them doesn't help anyone!

AS the title states, is HTC slowly becoming a Samsung clone, as about software updates?
I even sent a message to them 5 days ago, asking about delivery of official 2.3 and no response yet. WTF?
I bought an HTC phone (actually 3 in a row, Magic-Desire-Desire HD) cause i thought that they were much better than Samsung in support. That is why all of us bought their flagship phone.
Maybe is time to go for Atrix or Optimus 2X when they appear.
The simple answer is no, they wont.
You'll get 2.3 on your DHD eventually, just be patient! Would you rather they rush it and it be full of bugs, or they take their time and it be have less bugs?
If you want fastest updates trade DHD for Nexus S
PS - You think Samsung are bad? LG are worse!
thanks. but if Ns was available in Greece i would. The that has made me mad is that the aren't even answering at all.

I don't think they should port sense overnight... but...its like nearly 2months now. What annoys me with HTC is you buy their latest flagship device, only to find you get gazzumped a couple of months later by a different device with a newer software..and makes you think is there any point in buying latest HTC handsets when this happens...or maybe its Googles fault, if they communicated better instead of saying at the end of the summer 'Gingerbread is on its way', and actually said when its arriving and on what etc ppl could make better choices.
Added to this is that by the time they do release an update, the phones a year old, theres newer ones...you get one...then its groundhog day again. No doubt HTC have another DHD coming out soon with a front facing camera bla bla bla anyway, and also i think the reason they take so long is that its not a priority to them, their priority is investing their resources in pushing out yet newer handsets just to snare new victims..
btw for anyone, i asked HTC about an update about 2 weeks ago, they told me they wont be releasing one and to contact my network carrier...network carrier pointed me back to HTC.
anyway , rant over

That's just how it works though.
You buy something and a few months later it's out of date.
It's the way of the tech world and has been for years.
There's no malice or trickery involved, it's just business.

Maybe my insinuation of malice and trickery is a little unfair..but having said that, I guarantee if Id contacted HTC before buying the DHD in October and asked wld it get Gingerbread update they would have said 'sure, course you will, everyone gets updates'..knowing full well it wld take months and months to get the updates.
And if I'd contacted Google and said I was thinking of buying an android handest when is latest software gona be incorporated, they would have said 'we arent sure' just so I would get the DHD another registered android device for them...even though they know full well the likely release, and handsets that will release with it way in advance...so in a sense it is trickery, but guess thats business for you...neither wants to jeopardise a potential sale for their stats
so the snare is recoiled ready for the next victim

I wonder how hard it can really be... they probably just dont have any friggen (unit/automation) tests. The API from 2.2 to 2.3 has barely changed. Imagine you had to wait for a new Ubuntu release just to get a kernel update...
Given they managed to screw up the 1.72 release and havent even uploaded the source code for that kernel, does not make me very enthusiastic about actually seeing 2.3 out anytime in the next 6-9 months.

The software updates all work on about a 6 month cycle (give or take). It's made very clear from the outset that new software is in the pipelines, they just don't set a concrete date, they just simply release it when it's ready.
The same can be ready for HTC. They're actually good with a lot of their updates in comparison to a lot of manufacturers. There are a few devices which never even got an update to 1.6.
HTC will release an update when it's ready.
If you don't want to wait, install a CyanogenMod ROM.
I think other manufacturers can only learn from HTC..
for example, OTA with Froyo came to Desire in August 2010, this is some 3 months after Google released it..
DHD is still HTC's flagship and I think we will get 2.3 in some 2-3 months
Bear in mind that apart from the Nexus S no one is running an official Gingerbread build yet, so it's not as if HTC are behind the curve here so please get some perspective
Guys, it has been mentioned already but I just want to add that I have also read a report saying that 2.3 will be available in 6 months aprox. after initial release. Best strategy IMO, don't bother checking or thinking about it as it won't help and it will become obsession.

To have to request the source, violates the GPL. The fact that it is not immediately available upon release also violates the GPL.
so HTC just answered to ma my email:

We re excited about our upcoming updates, as for the Android 2.3 update, certrainly some of our phones will be receiving this upgrade, however, for the time being, there’s no information regarding which phones will be receiving it nor the schedule of its release.

Gingerbread only runs on Nexus S at the moment... You won't expect it to be here, one DHD that soon. At least wait for SGS to have it first.
Plenty of people had been postulating that Nodo would be released today, but I do vaguely recall seeing an article on Monday saying it would be out "next week".
Anyone got any ideas?
I'm still waiting/looking for my first update. I guess I don't need it if the new one comes out considering all previous patches are supposed to be rolled into it.
The rumors have all been for today, with the exception of one that said yesterday was the day. The only official word from MS has been "first two weeks of March," which means we still have 6 more days to wait until they end up being made into liars.
No specific date set yet officially. My advice is don't get excited until Microsoft officially announces it or people start getting it. Whichever comes first. I just can't see it coming out without an officially announcement first.
Let us hope for the sanity of some that it comes out today. What ever happened to patience is a virtue?
The official word was "early March" so it could be anytime between today and next week. No one really knows, the March 8th date was a rumour.
Given that device-specific 7389 ROMs have started to appear (HTC Mozart and Trophy at least) I get the feeling that something is imminent. Just how imminent is, of course, another matter....
I got the update thing today, dunno if it pre NoDo or NoDo, don't have any data cables at school :/

Still nothing here with Focus on At&t as of 10:17am EST
Using the HTC Euro update in the dev forum, gold card installed to O2 HD7 in UK, and first impressions are there are slight improvements overall, few extra animations and email flagging (unless i messed that before), copy & paste works well, haven't noticed that apps load any quicker.
More an overall polish than anything revolutionary - that'll come october!
Microsoft, if they're smart, should be aware of the March 8 rumour, and should publicly address it. "not true", "sort of true", "we're not sure". Even a "we're not sure when" would satisfy people, like myself. It at least would show they've got their finger on the pulse and have half a clue of what's going on.
And just like above, I want it for performance upgrades, I couldn't care less about copy/paste.

LMAO about your statement about them lieing
again
the red prt in the quote
Okay now tell me if this is a lie:
"I will be home by 5." You leave work at the same time you normally do but there is an accident on your regular route. You get home at 5:27. Do you consider yourself a liar? Probably not.
Let us not get on Holy. A big problem I have with humanity on the net is we are all overly critical towards others because we are just a screen name.
Apple claimed there was no Death Grip and in order to throw smoke and mirrors at the loyal customers they announced at the beginning of July 2010 that they would be shipping white iPhone 4s at the end of July. Now that is a bold-faced lie. And even bolder since it happened during a damage-control P.R. spectacle.
So they said they would have an update in February and it is March. Your phone is not unuseable no matter what picture you try to paint. We sometimes get places late. We sometimes finish our work late.
STS (stop the stupidity)

Oh gosh...did MS have a road accident?
So Vodafone and 3 have released a branded 1.28 update...T-mobile refuse to even acknowledge it exists (even though 1.29 is out now for unbranded). I have asked everywhere and met a total wall of silence regarding updates from t-mobile.
So my plan now is to ask every branded t-mobile uk customer to tweet t-mobile's support asking for ANY information regarding updates to our bug ridden HOX. The standard reply is 'we don't get told until it is released'. That is not good enough we wont need to ask when it is released, I don't believe in this day and age someone internally can't at least let us know if anything is in test...
There are people who haven't had updates for their phones that were released months ago. I don't want to let t-mobile off the hook and do the same to us..
Tweet and let them know your feelings on this...
@TMobileUKhelp

Susan: Hi there, my name is Susan. I am part of the dedicated T-Mobile Online Sales Team. How can I help you with your new order?
Mark: Hello do you know if T-Mobile plan to release the 1.28 software update for the HTC One X?
Susan: Hi Mark
Susan: Please bear with me while I check that information for you
Mark: ok thank you
Susan: At the moment we haven't planned yet for the same.
Susan: However I'll forward your request on my behalf.
Mark: ok onto who?
Facebook reply
Hi, I posted on t-mobile uk Facebook first about the 1.28 update and this was the reply I got "Hello Gary. I have heard nothing about the 1.28; nothing at all. If we get any information on this, it will be getting posted out. Thank you. David, T-Mobile Facebook Team"
Then asked about the 1.29 about an hour later and this was the reply I got "Hello Gary. At present, we do not know and there are occasions where we don't receive details regarding some updates until they have been released on the network. Thank you. David, T-Mobile Facebook Team."
So not helpful information from the Facebook side of things and I just sent HTC a message asking if they know, so far no reply but will let you know if anything comes of it.

All HTC will say is it depends on the networks testing policies.
I do think HTC should make all networks carrying there phone upgrade within x amount of weeks.
Okay well I also tweeted t-mobile as you suggested will see if what I get as a reply, more than like nothing of any help.

Thing to do it email them, use the contact us section and just say you wish they could give more news.
Cheers guys. they have chosen to totally ignore my tweet first thing this morning. Like you say even a 'no we are not testing it' would at least be something..
I will keep going with this until they cut me off

Will be doing that (over and over) as well. lol
Guys. I work for T-Mobile and can tell you that updates are low priority with all that's going on. People are not talking to each other. Even our mce toolbox is way behind on updates. All focus seems to be on 4g and stream lining staff in all departments. The same goes for orange

If true, that's poor. Business must go on as usual despite "changes" to an organisation.
O2 just rumoured to be releasing update in about a week. so that will just leave orange and t-mobile customers with bug ridden handsets....
Think there is a lesson here...I hope you still have some customers when you get round to releasing 4G (capped speeds anybody)...
Looks like rooting the way to go...

Rooting has and will always be the way to go when you get a handset from a network. If the phone works as in calls text and web, well all services that we pay for then things like battery life ect are not a priority. Not to the networks anyway.

Hey, i dont know if youve still got this problem but ive recently (10days ago) purchased the HTC one X on a Tmobile UK contract and i have the 1.28 update. all i done was turned phone on, put my wifi on and a meesage popped up for the update. If you havent already, maybe you should try that. best of luck anyways, just bumped into this post whilst looking for the 1.29 update.
