Easiest root method for EVO? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I've rooted a few phones (Nexus One, HTC Fender, Sprint HTC Hero) so I'm not new to this. I am wondering what the best and easiest root method for the EVO. The main reason I want root is for the Wireless Tether application so hopefully that will work with the EVO.
Thanks

READ its pretty easy
i have used both toast and rom manager both are simple

This kind of post is made for the general forum, please take these kind of questions there. But to answer your question, I would say the unrevoked method is probably the easiest, that is just my opinion. I recommend toasts method however if you can follow the directions carefully.

I have tried the guides and I get no where. My software version is 1.32.651.6.

You're going to need to provide a lot more information than that or no one can help you.

Don't do the unrevoked method.
do the 3 click root method..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706411&highlight=click+root
its basically toasts method put into a script.

I had no knowledge on how to root before I came to android. The first method I tryed worked like a charm for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701152
And then if you want to unlock NAND (which there is really no reason not to)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705113
Unless you know how to use ADB, then toasts is just fine. The 3 step method I have yet to try, I don't want to because this way is fine for me.

The 3 click root is awesome

I got it going yesterday, it would not take the PC36IMG.zip file. I finally found that after formatting the memory card again it worked fine. I did format it through the phone but still got invalid image error. I formatted it to a FAT32 in windows and it worked fine. BTW I used the toast method and part 1 and 2 worked like a charm. I just put on a stock rooted ROM since this phone is for my wife and she doesn’t care what’s on it. I just wanted to be able to install wireless tether and ROM manager.

Droid Incredible- root and then unroot?

Hello-
Again, big thanks for the work done by unrevoked team. Awesome.
My phone is arriving today, and I'd like to root. However, I'd also like the ability to return the phone to factory spec in case of an emergency. Is that possible via the unrevoked3 tool? If not, where can I find a factory Droid Incredible ROM or recovery image to flash?
Lastly, are there any changes to the wifi tether methods with one click root vs previous methods?
Thanks!
please search for unroot, there are videos out there for this as well.
Not really- nothing addresses the new unrevoked3 tool. Don't leave an answer unless you bring something new to the table- I've done my basic homework.
EDIT: Can't post links yet, but there is a post called "[HOW 2] Downgrade software version (before OTA)" which has instructions on using the HTC Radio Update Utility. Can anyone confirm if this works with unrevoked3? outsid0r - is this the same method you are referring to?
yes thats the method and i have done it so i can confirm it does work

Thanks! That was very helpful, I appreciate it. The mods can mark this thread as closed, I think. I suppose I'll now be comfortable with rooting the phone!
rooting is quite easy, but and FYI for right now, using windows can get a communication error which is under investigation by the unrevoked team

So, could someone help me with rooting??

I've had my Evo for about 3 weeks now and am now wanting to root now that I see cyanogenmod is coming to Evo. I've rooted my Nexus and G1 with no problems but it seems the Evo is more difficult, what is the easiest way to root my Evo? And would someone be willing to help me with rooting it via IM or something similar?
There are tons of threads in the android development forum to show you how. Not to mention there was a one click root at some point if I am not mistaken, although I have no idea if it still works.

Yea, I've seen all of them and they all seem tedious compared to Nexus rooting. Which is the best method to go about rooting? I want to use Amon RA recovery if that helps. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me too.
Can anyone help?
Simple Root is 3 clicks & you're rooted & nand unlocked. Running win7 x64 & worked great for me.
I was reading up on it, do I need to uninstall HTC sync and the HTC drivers to get it to work??
I believe for unrevoked you need to remove those items ( the last time i checked at v2 ).
Versus Simple Root... I believe those are all required to get it to work.
What Version is your phone it would be much easier to know

Its 1.47.651.1 I'm going to try the 1 simple root method, but just have one question, am I supposed to have it on charge only or disk drive?
Charge-only
Awe crap, I forgot to put flash recovery, was I supposed to do that first or can I do that after step 1 or something???
Ok, so I got to part 4 and it just says starting part 2, thats it, it doesn't do anything more. Did I do something wrong, or....? Please help.
So could someone please help me???????
What method are u using? Try unrevoked 3, its very simple
*This was posted from my Evo 4G*
I had to do this after the using simple root method.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
Thanks for replying guys, but I got it to work finally late last night. Anyways, I can't get wireless tether to work. It keeps force closing. I know I have root and everything because I was able to make a nand backup and I flashed Damagecontrol.

HTC EVO - Can't root - Main Version is Older

I have tried multiple methods for rooting my EVO (Simpleroot, Simpleroot OTA, command line using evorecovery, several others) and always get the "Main Version is Older" message and cannot proceed.
I have seen snippets on these forums that refer to this problem but have yet to find an answer. Does anyone have a definitive answer that will allow me to get past this?
Thanks in advance.
This is what I always direct people to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
IMO it's the definitive guide on rooting. I spend DAYS trying simple root, unrevoked, and all of that other garbage (no offense), and I found this, it took 20 minutes, and voila! Full root and nand backup on my first shot.
I had this problem as well. I formatted my sd card in android and then reran simple root. Then it worked. Not sure exactly what the problem was but that fixed it.
Follow simpleroot and watch the video. Exactly what he does, exactly when he does it. I noticed that if I did anything too early/late it wouldn't work right.

Use that link and start at step 5. It worked for me after HOURS of trying every method (I couldn't even downgrade to a stock RUU!)
Another thing, which I'm not sure helped, but as soon as I replaced the microSD card that came with the phone with a new one, step 5 worked like a charm even though I tried it previously without a new card multiple times with it failing. Good luck... I'm not sure if starting with a new microSD card did the trick, but I can't see what else I did differently to get it working.

Thanks for the tip. I had the same problem. formatted my SD card and ran simple root and it worked like a charm!
will this still work if your phone wont boot with the "Main version is older!" message?????
What version is your hboot and firmware and android OS version?
More info.
sent from 2yr old Evo on ICS
Also, the fast rx8 root tut is the best and easiest on the forum IMO, it's what I used right after buying my Evo. Was my first foray into android and went flawlessly. For 2yrs I have thanked this man every day in the back of my mind

It would be helpful to know the Hboot and radio versions you have on your phone, since the root method that you use will depend on it.

[Q] Experienced Opinion Needed for ROOT..

Im trying to root my wifes mt3gs, shes finally sick of espresso amd ready for cm!
I noticed theres about 3 differrent methods to root it..
If anyone has used these methods and can tell me which was more user friendly I would eternaly greatful, of course i prefer a "1-click-root" method but i dont think that exsists does it?
thanx in advance..
i have tried two methods, exploid was the most straight forward and easiest. cm6 does not yet support bluetooth.

One click method? Never seen that for the slide. I used Eugenes method to root which is in the slide Rom bible and so far I've been able to root all 3 slides Ive ended up with very easily. You will have to use command prompt on ur computer but if u watch the video its really not hard at all. This is my.first android phone and it was simple for me so try it out an let us know.

go with exploid
I agree with whgarner, I used the exploid method and that was fast and efficient
I used this method and strongly recommend it: HTC Slide root guide from cyanogenmod
The guide assumes that you have already setup Android SDK on your computer and that you have installed the correct drivers for your phone so if you have'nt done that already you will need to, as all the methods I have seen so far for the Slide require ADB. Lemme know if you got any questions.

EVO software 3.70.651.1 Any 1 click root methods?

I have never rooted my phones (HTC Hero now HTC EVO) but after I the update on my phone, it added Blockbuster and Nova to my phone and I can't delete either. And Nova is not even the full game, its a limited version and asks me to buy the full one.
So I would like to root my phone if possible to remove this bloatware crap.
Do I have any options via a one click method that will allow me to root and do this with a permanent root effect?
Thanks,
Whiteice
no one clicks. look in the dev forum for the fly like a kite method though. easy enough.
UnrEVOked is releasing their new version for hboot 2.02 versions very soon.
heh and we just got the new 2.10 hboot. are they compatible? probably not. if htc is going to take the time to update, it is going to have some new features.
Ack! I didn't know that updated the HBOOT too.... *grumbles about accepting update*
Unrevoked 3.21 is not working for the evo's latest release. Gotta hold tight untill some one can root this build
Looks like unrevoked has version 3.22 out. Any word on that?

3.22 has been out for a few weeks. It only fixed things for the incredible, not the evo.

^Seriously...I've been trying to find a quick root guide, but the quick root guides are not so quick lol. In order to know what you are doing, you have to do so much research to know what the heck they are talking about. I used to do customer ROMs and crap all the time with my Touch Pro 2 Windows mobile phone, it was SOOO much easier. And this is coming from a Sprint Service Tech, I've been messing with phones for quite awhile...
Personally, i just started all this root & mod stuff recently. Its interesting but very time consuming. Like you said the method may be quick but we have to do an hr's worth of reaseach to make it make sense 1st....
**Headache.....i know**
Again, i am offering a step by step walkthrough. Macs too in case those pc methods have you stumped. People deserve root! Heh. No but seriously, I will help...
Hi i have a mac with HTC evo 3.70 need root please help
I need some help in how to root HTC EVO please someone that did it , i dont want to brick my phone is the first time i am doing this. I have search in the internet but almost everything is in PC and not on a mac
i second that also i need to know how to root android 3.70 there has to be an easier way to do it than doing it the old fashion long way, help! thanks in advance!
I HAVE A THEORY THAT REQUIRES NO ADB WHATSOEVER AND I NEED TESTERS! pm or email me and i will tell you what i plan. it is as simple as using rom manager to pull a fast one on z4root then using unrevoked forever. PLEASE HELP MY CAUSE...
Have no fear guys...the new Unrevoked should be out soon. The developers have been updating their twitter page daily...and their updates look promising
www.twitter.com/unrevoked
This new update is said to work with software version 3.30 as well as the new OTA 3.70.
I'm also too chicken to try the multi-step method so I'm just patiently waiting for the new Unrevoked to be released
I'm right up there with you. Successfully rooted my hero (adb) although I'm still not sure what I was doing. I'm still trying to get all the clockwork, RA recovery stuff clear in my head, and now I'm trying to root my new evo with 3.70 ota. The new headache begins!
