Guys, I'm looking to finally get a new phone but my big issue is that my eyesight is going bad. Really bad and I can't see what's on the screen without reading glasses and that's not something I want to wear all the time and therefore, I can't really see what's on the screen.
I had this issue a few years ago and bought the iPhone for the sole reason that I could see what was on the screen. Well, as a phone, it was a piece of $hit so I don't want it again. My eyesight is even worse and I've talked to a dealer that pretty much has ANY phone available but they cannot figure out how to make the fonts bigger.
I mean, how hard can it be to program this?
I don't care if it's Android or WIndows mobile, all I care about is GSM and then I can pick an OS after that. Yeah, I have some requirements but bottom line, if I can't see the damn info, I can't very well use it now can I.
So, HOW big can I make the fonts in windows (any windows mobile) or android and can someone perhaps post some pics with size samples, maybe even as a comparison to the iPhone but if not, I can figure that part out by resizing the pics of your phone to match that of the actual size of the iphone and then compare them side by side.
I don't care if it's a hack or if it's some software I have to buy.
Thanks for any help and hope I'm in the right place and if not, please direct me and I'll move this thread there.
Thanks
George
I went to the AT&T store last night for two reasons: 1. To play with WP7 on a live device so I could reject it with authority; and 2. to resign myself to replacing my iPhone 3G with an iPhone 4 and a package of prayers for an unbroken back.
What I found surprised me. Now mind you, I'd played with the emulator so I knew the basics of how the OS operated, but man...in person on a real device is a whole other ballgame. I was so surprised at how fast, responsive and intuitive the device was that I began to think I might actually buy one. "But the app store sucks, I hear!" so I took a look--and discovered that all but ONE of the apps I use on my iPhone were already there (minus a couple of specific games titles like awesome solitaire, but meh, it's solitaire, who effing cares?).
So I bought the phone. Today I found via techbargains.com that AT&T is offering $75 off any smartphone, with free activation (iPhone excluded,) so I called and got them to apply that, crediting me $93. Effectively I bought a new focus for $125, which seemed pretty damn good to me.
So far, I really think the device is fantastic, and side by side with iOS...it really makes Apple's mobile OS seem rather antiquated.
So basically that's it: I've switched back to Windows Mobile, and I'm not looking back
kudos for the actually going to the store to play before making a judgment and double kudos for buying one over an iphone 4. Did you get the Focus or the Surround?
I hear that the focus is a really great phone.

Got the focus, as I wanted the larger screen. Plus, truly, I wasn't impressed with the surround's speakers enough to warrant the extra bulk . I'd read that the focus "felt cheap," but to me it seems solidly built--just not heavy. But frankly, I like that--the device is incredibly comfortable to hold and operate.
I'm sure everyone here already knew about this, but I just found out about an hour ago: Voice command. It works REALLY well. I'm a Systems Engineer by trade, and my coworkers are all geeking out at the new phone. I think it may have caused spontaneous nerdgasms in half a dozen people so far today, LOL.
What is the battery life like... is it better than say a hd2? Will it go 2 days without charge?

Haven't had it long enough to comment intelligently on the battery life . I can tell you that with HEAVY usage today (read: 6 guys passing the thing around, loading apps, web surfing, downloading apps, trying out Xbox Live games, etc) it got down to 30% battery life as of 4:00PM; it's been off the charger since 7AM, and being played with extensively from 10AM onward. I've downloaded over 1GB worth of stuff just this afternoon.
Note, the battery life will get longer after a few charge/discharge cycles (and when its not played with as much)
I'm not sure how different the Omnia 7 is in hardware specs, but during a 'work day (8 hours)' i dropped to 3/4.
I have had it for a week, so I'm still fiddling often, but not as much.
My friend got his Omnia 7 2 days ago. yesterday he had the battery at critical over the same time period (so it does improve)

So check this out. Met with a buddy of mine for lunch, and mostly spent the hour with him playing around with my focus. He runs a small consulting firm with about 30 techs, mostly on a mix of iPhones and Blackberries. I just got a call from him:
"Hey, loved your phone today. I just got in touch with my AT&T rep, confirmed I can get the $75 off promotion. I'm moving the whole company to Windows Phone 7 effective when we take delivery of the new phones next week. Thanks for letting me get my hands on it!"
I'm shocked, but not *too* shocked. Personally I'd still wait awhile before moving over my business entirely (mostly for the first update and maybe the app store to mature a little more,) but he's a tech genius, so if it's good enough for him, I see no reason to argue

Good to hear, thanks . I'm now on the prowl for a decent class 6 32GB MicroSD for the sucker. I've never used more than 8 (even when I had a 16GB iPhone) but I think with the Xbox Live games, I'm likely going to!
Probably it is a good idea to wait a bit for WP7 certified memory cards. Microsoft says it is not all about the speed class.

Buying a Windows Phone 7 is *not* switching to "Windows Mobile."
WP != WM
But it's all good -- glad you're liking the phone! I like my HD7 too.

That's my sentiments too. That's why I made a thread about WP7 (on the HD7) being like a high-end Lexus or Infiniti...very, very sophisticated and elegant.

I hope you are aware that changing the MicroSD card will wipe the system. You basically are doing a hard reset to upgrade to a larger card.

This is a great thread. I agree with the original poster - the Focus is a fantastic phone. Once you start to actually use WP7, and get a feel for the UI and how it operates, it's like a whole new world, and the iOS/Android icon grid system seems archaic in comparison.
I also agree that at this early stage, I can still find a relevant app for almost everything I have previously needed on Android.
Really liking WP7 overall. I think if people give it a chance and start to use it, they will see the difference as well.
Arg, the Dell Venue Pro is becoming more tempting with each day. Damn you for this thread, my better half is going to leave me if I drop another $500 on an unnecessary toy

Where do you find that info? I have noticed that on each of the two days I've now had the phone, new apps have appeared. So far I'm only missing really two apps from iPhone: a turn by turn GPS and Wordpress. I'm sure both will be along before long
Well the time has finally come and unfortunately for HTC they didn't have the hardware I wanted at the time. I now have a Nokia N8
It's hardware and build far outweighed the hassle of moving service providers.
We'll see what the world has to offer in 2 years from now.
I have no doubt HTC will catch up with what I'm looking for in a phone by then.
What does this have to do with wp7????
Ok and you are saing that this crappy nokia n8 is better than the new HTCs ? The only thing is 12mpx camera and NOTHING else... it has a ****ty 600-and-something processor with 256mb of RAM and it is LAGGING all the time and symbian is stil a dinosaur. Tell me what IS better ?
and btw... what the hell does this have in common with windows phone 7 ?...
I guess what he is saying is that the current batch of WP7 hardware wasnt good enough for him so he went for a Nokia N8. I had the same dilemma but I eventually decided to get a Samsung Focus, Symbian S60 Touch really has a long way to go before it can be considered usable. Now only if Nokia started releasing some Meego based devices.
GTFO of the WP7 forums and go whine about it somewhere else. Silly trolls.
No need to be so rude, but seriously an N8 is better than an HD7 or Mozart? Hardware-wise may be but the OS is so outdated, they could very well load WM6.5. Who buys phones just based on h/w these days now that they all got 1GHz+ processors and killer GPUs that make the UI feel like buttery smooth (at least for WP7 and iOS)? These things are as powerful as mainstream computers a decade ago.
Woahh there..
Hey hang on a moment. I don't just rush into a buy like this. I carefully research my hardware before I get it. I got the N8 because it will see me into the next few years. The Mozart was going to be the phone I was going to get but The price of the contract was way too much for the hardware. I was being penalized by an OS.
I'm explaining why I went to this phone.
If you can suggest a Windows 7 phone that was no bigger than an N8
(This was a big factor too)
12MP camera where the zoom doesn't compromise the quality of the picture
Provides 720P out via HDMI and records that quality too.
Allows hot swappable Sim and micro sd (32 gig) cards. (Come on.. how much 720p video are you going to get on 8gb on a mozart not as much as an N8 with 16 Gb on board with 32 GB expandability.)
Head phones are also better than a Mozart.
Sound quality is better than a Mozart. Dual microphones, Now this was an eye opener for me. The sound is much richer on the Nokia N8 video than on a Mozart.
Oh and an Amoled screen too.
Oh and I can plug a usb keyboard into the phone. So it does act like a mini PC when you hook it up to the TV. I've been looking for something like this in a phone for a long time.
In a drop test wher the phone was left on a car roof the N8 was the only survivor. I'll have it wrapped in a silicone case but It's nite to know that the build quality hasn't been compromised.
Oh and it wasn't an IPhone
All this for 20 a month with unlimited dataon a 2yr contract... I couldn't get that on a windows 7 mozart at the time.
I've been a member of this forum for a long time. I've helped out in developing Roms for my HTC phones. I'll still be around. Might still keep the old Diamond as it's been an absolute gem.

perhaps, but he done his research, and he got the phone right for him.
@OP: good on you for that. i've never been a big fan of nokia smart phones cause i found them a bit sluggish, but in the end, if it does the job for you, then good. i also am a bit of an audio/video person, but not enough to put any faith into a phone for producing what i want.
again, great to see that you got a device you feel is right for you. hopefully when your contract is up, the line of windows phones will then be capable of what you desire and you return .
I'm with you on this, I am staying away from the current batch of WP7, to see what hardware they will come out with next year.

hey there, i´m looking for a new smartphone and since i don´t want spend like 450 euro for a phone (that i don´t like for a 100% - i´m very picky....). i tried the galaxy s2 (kinda HATE the big home button, very cheap battery cover) and the sensation (lousy internal memory, very low "loud"speaker, wifi issues, and so on), again unfortunately i´m VERY picky.......
anyway, i stumbled over the win 7 phones which are at a very low price at the moment and the Optimus 7 is the one with the lowest price.
so i´m asking you if this device is good enough to spend some time with until new flagships (new android or maybe the galaxy s2 wp7) come out or does it have BIG known issues???
and could you tell me your results with the camera since i read somewhere that it isn´t THAT good....
thx!
/e: just to put some numbers in
the LG optimus 7 is available for like 160 euro and the next step ahead would be the omnia 7 for 213 euro.
specially when i see THIS video, i´m not too sure anymore, which one to pick
no matter which one u pick u will love wp7 especially with the mango beta out. the Omnia has an AMOLED screen and people swear that it's the **** so if that matters to u than I would go for that otherwise go for the optimus 7
I came from Android to WP7 and love it. If you pick one up now, the specs might not look incredible, but everything just WORKS. I've been running the Mango beta, and I can't go back to NoDo now.
I love my HD7 & WP7. There are some design changes I'd like to see, but nothing deal breaking. What'd I suggest though, is to go to your local retailer & play with it in person & make your own choice/decision. everyone has their own tastes, so it's best to play with one yourself & make up your own mind rather then follow the opinion of others. For me, the biggest thing is that WP7 is very fast & smooth. The integration is also awesome. mango will only make things better. This being said, if you are big into hacking/customizing your device, WP7 is lacking in that area. Especially after Mango because of the INTEROPSERVICES block that has broken almost all homebrew apps (registry editor/etc.)

I would not recommend WP7 alltogether because of limitations it gives.
But if you're into it, and yes WP7 can be very saisfying in many areas,
I can say - having still my LG Optimus 7 - that it's a very very good phone itself.
I would never trust LG but this phone is really robust and well designed and was a complete surprise to me.
It has hardware keys which I find very comfortable, not allowing any accidental press,
back cover is top noch metal and the whole phone looks 100 times better than on any photo, quite classy but not too much. All the hardware keys are great too. The screen is sweet, audio quality very good.
But the Camera:
In daylight it's great. You can make great photos and videos.
The whole problem is in the night & dark... Well the colours are OK but basically in those conditions pics are complete ****. Just blurry and not sharp, as well as videos. TBH not many modern phone cameras work in these conditions anyway.

uhh yea stop spreading FUD naco he's looking for someone to help him purchase a wp7 device not for someone to deter him from purchasing a wp7!
If you're "VERY picky" then I wouldn't buy a Windows 7 phone.
Basically it's a *good* system, but it's clear from the lack of apps and the number of small niggles that it's an OS that is still maturing. I imagine Microsoft see this WP7 the same as the original Xbox; a way to get developers, phone carriers and hardware manufacturers on board, as well as iron out most technical issues, before the real battle; the launch of Windows Phone 8.
If you're the sort of person where just one little thing could ruin your enjoyment of the phone, then I'd probably recommend iOS (where everything pretty much just works as intended).
Oh and to answer your original question, yes I'm happy with my HTC Mozart, though there are a few frustrations with the system, and many apps that I miss.
extremely happy
If you find yourself only using 10-20 apps on other OS, odds are you will be perfectly happy with wp7. I think I have a total of 8 third party apps right now, I just don't need much that isn't already built into wp7.

exactly, and after mango there're gonna be much more built-in apps even if you'd like to use many apps, go right ahead, it won't slow down the OS (unlike android)

i have a HTC 7 Pro, and a Samsung Omnia 7.
Best Phones i've ever had.
Even Android Phones like Galaxy S (S II wasnt out back then), Nexus etc were simply bad after i used a WinPho7
Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion, and this is mine.
I left android for a huge reason (one of the same reasons why I left winmo as well)
no matter how much a custom rom improved the experience, at little things, both OSes sucked at. I didn't want to buy apple because they are POS when you jailbreak them. That said, windows phone intrigued me after playing with it for a good 10 days. And when I had to go back to android or windows mobile, life was grim. I was bored with the constant rom flashing to get the device to work. even though miui was good for android and dutty was good for windows mobile, the experience overall was mediocre.
I am definitely enjoying windows phone and it gives me so much options
With Mango around the corner I can now recommend WP7 without hesitation as I know things like push notifications will be fixed soon. That's the only thing I don't like about WP7 along with some very poor Xbox Live games.

thats a thing that bothers me, too....i already had a optimus speed for a couple of time and all i did was flashing a new rom again and again....
i already thought of an iphone too but since i already got a contract and have to buy the phone at the normal price, the iphone would be around 580 euro ;(
the perfect device would be a good out-of-the-box phone at a "normal" price where i don´t have to tweak everything myself
but thx for your answers

sounds like wp7 may be just for you, its the best out of the box experience and there's no cluttered UI like ios or tiny (though admittedly clear) screen. wP7 never stops amazing me with all of its functionality.

WP7Forum.ru are pretty reliable when it comes to Windows Phone leaks.
They have received the above table listing the features of Windows Phone 7.8 vs Windows Phone 8.
The table reveals that IE10 will not be coming to Windows Phone 7.8, but does suggests a Datasmart app will be made available, allowing users to monitor their data usage, and also a RCS-e app, which allows carriers to plug in new data services for their phones.
The table also reveals a new, not previously rumored, Windows Phone 8 feature – the ability to recognize TV programs also.
im not going to hold my breath on that lot
Someones fishing me thinks.
But in saying that, The Skype app is terrible atm and is the only reason I don't use it, pretty much everything else on the list is already here so it would be most disappointing if that were the case,
Still, I bought a WP7.x device, no point loosing sleep over it it all, I have exactly what I wanted, the next time I buy a phone ill make sure that too is what I want
Only a fool would buy a device "expecting" it do be something different later on
even if the homescreen was the only improvement, it'll keep me going till I upgrade to a suitable wp8 phone...
I'am looking forward to get the new home screen. And I hope that developers will get a better and extended API to build their own live tiles.
The new Homescreen ist so fantastic i can't wait for Windows Phone 7.8 Update :good:
